The story of 2 year-old Paul the Octopus

Paul the Octopus

Paul the Octopus is a two-year-old octopus with a history of correctly predicting the results of major German international football matches. Paul was born in England but currently resides at the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. Before German international football matches, Paul is presented with food in two identical containers; one container is marked with the flag of Germany and the other is marked with the flag of Germany's opponent. In each instance, Paul's choice of food is interpreted as his predicted victor. Paul is reported to have correctly chosen the winner in more than 80 percent of Germany's UEFA Euro 2008 matches, and he has correctly chosen the winner in each of Germany's first five matches in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

News on Octopus Paul on July 3, 2010 - Germany in Semi-Finals: Germany vs Spain on July 7, 2010 - Who will be in the Finals?

2010 FIFA World Cup – Germany Through To Semi Final Stage
yessir

Octopus Paul Spot On Again

Against great odds, Germany defeated Argentina to enter the semi-final stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup competition. The decisive win puts the spotlight on Octopus Paul who predicted that victory when most pundits believe that Argentina would win. Octopus Paul has a perfect 100% accuracy in predicting the result of Germany’s matches in this 2010 FIFA World Cup competition. Can it maintain that record for the semi final and the final (if Germany makes it to the final)? Now all eyes are on Octopus Paul as he attempts to predict the result of Germany’s semi final result.

The German Scoring Machine

Germany, it seems, loves the number 4. Germany’s youthful players put in 4 goals against Australia. They found the net 4 times against England. And now, against Argentina which was the favorite to reach the final, the German team shot 4 balls into the Argentina goal with no reply from their opponent.

This victory is a major upset, and it vindicates coach Joachim Loew’s strategy of relying on youthful players over the more experienced but older players. As a matter of fact, it is precisely because of the younger and less experienced players in the German team that pundits have predicted Germany would not get pass Argentina. But it did.

Octopus Paul

Octopus Paul took nearly an hour to decide that Germany would beat Argentina. Now we know why. Octopus Paul was too engrossed in “watching” this match, and wanted to “see” more. Perhaps Octopus Paul couldn’t believe that Argentina would collapse so easily?

Think About It

We know that Octopus Paul’s success rate in predicting the outcome of Germany’s games in the 2008 European Championship was 80%. Now in this 2010 FIFA World Cup competition, Germany has already played 5 games. It is 2 games away from the final game. If Octopus Paul maintains his 80% accuracy rate, then the next 2 games could be tricky – because Octopus Paul could statistically be wrong. What would pundits think of the next prediction by Octopus Paul? Place bets on Octopus Paul’s prediction? Or bet on the opposite result? And what would the German players think? Will the Germany team’s morale be affected?

News on Paul the octopus prediction on Germany will go through in the quarter finals of 2010 FIFA World Cup

Argentina vs. Germany – Octopus Prediction

The octopus that is prediction the World Cup games for Germany has become something of a worldwide celebrity. Apparently he was right in 80% of the games in the 2006 World Cup and so far he has picked the right winner in all of Germany’s matches in the 2010 World Cup.

In the quarter final between Argentina and Germany the octopus predicted that Germany will go through. I wouldn’t put too much confidence in this octopus being able to tell the future though and if you are looking for a “real” preview with predictions for this game we have written one that is posted here (human predictions and opinions only in this post).

If you are looking to do some World Cup betting on this match I would recommend ignoring the octopus prediction and trying to make up your own opinion.

World Cup pre-game: Uruguay vs. Netherlands
By Brandon Hicks, CBC Sports

Day 27

Uruguay vs. Netherlands, semifinals

Date and location

Tuesday, July 6, Green Point Stadium, Cape Town

Broadcast details

Live on CBC and CBCSports.ca (2 p.m. ET). Consult CBC's full broadcast schedule.

What's at stake

A berth in the World Cup final against the winner of Germany-Spain, to be contested in Soccer City in Johannesburg on July 11. Loser drops to the third-place game against the loser of Germany-Spain, to be contested in Port Elizabeth Stadium in Port Elizabeth on July 10.

Player to watch for Uruguay

Diego Forlan — Uruguay needed some magic to even its quarter-final tie against Ghana. Fittingly, it came from Forlan's boot on a free kick in the 55th minute, his third goal of the tournament. He also scored the opening penalty kick in the shootout to get La Celeste off and running. He will need to be better than ever against the Dutch, as Uruguay is missing its other top scoring threat, Luis Suarez, who picked up a red card against Ghana and is suspended.

Player to watch for Netherlands

Arjen Robben — He carried his club side, Bayern Munich, to the Champions League final this past season, and now he's doing the same for the Dutch in the World Cup. Robben shredded and infuriated Brazil's defence in the quarter-final, forcing a substitution from Brazil when Michel Bastos couldn't contain him, and inciting Felipe Melo to pick up a red card later, which salted away the win. It's a safe bet he will figure large in the biggest game of his life.

Key matchup

Robben and Wesley Sneijder vs. Mauricio Victorino and Diego Lugano — Can Uruguay do what Brazil's imposing defence couldn't, and contain two of the most dangerous attackers in the tournament? Centre backs Victorino and Lugano have a monumental task, which could be made more difficult if Lugano is still hampered by the injury that forced him out of the match against Ghana in the first half.

The Uruguayan perspective

"They play an excellent passing game and you can tell they are determined to win the trophy for the first time for the Netherlands. It's going to be really tough." — defender Diego Lugano

The Dutch perspective

"We already had that feeling before the tournament, that on our day, we can beat every country in the world." — midfielder Dirk Kuyt

World Cup head-to-head

The two sides have met once at the World Cup. In 1974, the Netherlands defeated Uruguay 2-0 in the group phase.
