Penang Immigration Department without electricity for 5 hours due to an internal power failure

Five-hour blackout in Penang Immigration Dept
Published: Monday September 13, 2010 MYT 2:10:00 PM
By DERRICK VINESH

BUTTERWORTH: The state Immigration Department was hit by a five-hour blackout due to an internal power failure.

Department director Abdul Qadir Siddiq Ahmad said the blackout, which occurred at 7.30am, was restored by 12.30pm Monday.

He said initial investigations showed that the power failure affected only the department as the neighbouring buildings had electricity.

He also said there was no indication of any fire to the Tenaga Nasional sub-station unit within the premises. "We were unable to immediately switch to our generator set for back up power supply because the set was spoilt.

"So, we called our vendors and they repaired the set by 12.30pm," he said when met at the department Monday.

Abdul Qadir said Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) partially restored power supply to the building by 12.45pm, and later had it fully restored by 2pm.

He said the blackout had caused temporary disruption to the issuance of passports, visas and foreign worker permits at the department.

"Those who needed to get their documents urgently processed were directed to our Immigration offices in George Town, Kulim or Sungai Petani," he said.

Abdul Qadir, however, said the department's enforcement unit and other case investigation section, as well as those that involved in the issuance and submission of documents were not affected.

Penang TNB general manager (distribution) Abdul Aziz Jaafar, when contacted, confirmed the incident, but said the cause of the blackout was yet to be determined.

"We are still investigating the matter. Our men have done necessary work to restore power supply to the premises," he said.

He stressed that the incident had nothing to do with last Saturday’s power cable fire on the Penang Bridge.

Misteri Kehilangan Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya - 'Bawa mayat mak, tunjuk depan Rina... kata Erinawati Sofia Buhari, anak keempat Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya

Misteri Kehilangan Sosilawati: 'Bawa mayat mak, tunjuk depan Rina'

Anak desak bapa cari Sosilawati, tak percaya mati kena bunuh

Brothers are main suspects in murder of four

KUALA LANGAT: Two lawyer brothers are the prime suspects in the murder of cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three others whose bodies were burnt and their ashes strewn in a river near Ladang Gadong, in Tanjong Sepat, here.

Cops are probing if the brothers are also responsible for four more people reported missing.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said police were awaiting forensic confirmation on the remains, believed to be that of Sosilawati, the client of the main suspect – a Datuk – said to have been handling a land deal in Penang for the entrepreneur. He owned the farm where the bodies were allegedly burnt after they had been assaulted and stabbed to death.
Picture shows the man believed to be the mastermind being led away by police. — ART CHEN / The Star

From initial investigations, police found that the ashes were disposed of at the mouth of a river about 4.2km from the farm. Comm Bakri said the motive of the murder could be business rivalry, debt and a land business deal gone sour. It is learnt that the land in Penang was bought for RM25mil and was to have been re-sold for RM200mil.

Sosilawati was last seen leaving Kuala Lumpur for Banting on Aug 30, with her driver Kamaruddin Shamsuddin, 44, lawyer Ahmad Kamil Karim, 32, and bank officer Noorhisham Mohammad, 38. Their mysterious disappearance attracted much interest.

“Police believe the 41-year-old lawyer was the mastermind behind the disappearances and could have been involved in four other missing persons cases,” Comm Bakri told reporters at the Banting police headquarters yesterday.

The brothers were among eight people arrested in connection with the case. The other six, including two women, aged between 19 and 45, were farmhands.

Police managed to get fresh leads into the case that saw the arrest of the eight, following the co-operation from the public, media and suspects detained earlier.

“All the information we obtained from the suspects detained earlier gave our men more clues that pointed to the description of the four missing persons,” he said.

“We still need a DNA test to confirm the identity of the victims but there is only a slim chance that they are alive,” Comm Bakri said, adding that he did not rule out the possibility of more arrests.

“We will investigate the brothers in relation to their accumulation of properties, high-end cars and their business dealings that involve millions of ringgit,” he added.

Police are also investigating the whereabouts of the RM4mil which Sosilawati was said to have been carrying.

Comm Bakri said one of the four previous missing persons cases involved an Indian national who had opened a restaurant with the brothers as partners.

He said police would investigate these other cases as well.

Empat dipercayai hilang selepas urusan tanah dengan peguam

Misteri Kehilangan Sosilawati: Penahanan suspek bantu rungkai 4 lagi kes hilang

Pengarah Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah (JSJ) Bukit Aman, Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin, berkata empat individu itu, termasuk beberapa ahli perniagaan dikatakan hilang selepas berurus niaga tanah membabitkan suspek sama.

Hadir sama Pengarah Pasukan Petugas Khas (Operasi/Anti-Pengganas) Bukit Aman, Datuk Fuzi Md Harun; Timbalan Pengarah JSJ (Operasi/Risikan) Bukit Aman, Datuk Hadi Ho Abdullah dan Ketua Polis Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Wira Muhammad Sabtu Osman.

6 people died including shooter after a man was furious the way his wife cooked eggs

5 slayings, suicide rock rural Ky. trailer court
By BRETT BARROUQUERE, Associated Press Writers Brett Barrouquere, Associated Press Writers Sun Sep 12, 2:26 pm ET

JACKSON, Ky. – Nothing seemed amiss when Robert Collins first heard someone had fired gunshots in his trailer park in rural eastern Kentucky. After all, it wasn't uncommon for the neighbors to let a few rounds loose for stress relief or target practice.

When the 50-year-old heard six of his neighbors were dead, including the shooter, it gave the routine sound of gunfire new meaning.

"This is unbelievable, really," Collins said Sunday morning. "It's just got everybody scared around here. Just frightened that it happened."

Police say Collins' neighbor, 47-year-old Stanley Neace, went on a shooting spree Saturday morning, chasing down his wife and killing her and four other people. The man — who had been facing eviction and who a victim's relative said was furious with the way his wife cooked his breakfast — then turned the gun on himself at the trailer court in the Mount Carmel community 11 miles north of Jackson in Breathitt County.

A day after Neace's rampage, the trailer court was again quiet, surrounded by hills and farm fields. Laundry hung on clothes lines and front porches. Dogs barked, and cats wrestled in patches of overgrown grass not far from some discarded furniture.

Kids' bicycles were parked in front of Neace's home near the porch where Neace killed himself — his blood still marked a wall near the door. A large hole was visible on the outside of another trailer with holes from a shotgun's buckshot visible above it, all evidence of where Neace had fired.

Shades or blankets covered the windows of many homes where the shootings occurred. People could be heard talking and televisions and radios played, but no one answered the door when a reporter knocked Sunday.

Sherri Anne Robinson, a relative of two of the victims, said Neace was furious because his eggs were cold. But County Sheriff Ray Clemons and Kentucky State Police spokesman Tony Watts said detectives were still trying Sunday to nail down what prompted Neace's rampage.

The bodies of Neace and his five victims — 54-year-old Sandra J. Neace; 31-year-old Dennis J. Turner of Vancleave; 28-year-old Sandra J. Strong of Vancleve; 40-year-old Tammy R. Kilborn of Jackson; and 30-year-old Teresa G. Fugate of Jackson — were sent to the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies.

Collins said neighbors and a police officer told him Neace snapped over how his wife cooked eggs — but "that don't justify killing five people," he said.

"That's a big price to pay," said Collins, who lives at the front end of the trailer court.

Landlord Ray Rastegar said Neace received monthly disability checks from the Social Security Administration, though he didn't know what his disability was. Rastegar said he had begun the process of evicting Neace, who had lived in the trailer park for about seven years, because he had become more hostile toward neighbors in recent months.

"He was unpredictable," Rastegar said. "Little things would set him off."

The sheriff had known Neace for years and said he was not violent.

"He was a little hot sometimes, but we never had any major problems," Clemons said. "Nothing like this."

Collins said Neace was a good neighbor over the past few years, but he had suspected for a while that something had gone wrong in Neace's life.

"I thought maybe Stanley would have killed himself, maybe his wife," Collins said.

He also recalled Fugate, who lived directly behind him with her four children, as "a wonderful mother."

"I don't know what they'd do without her," Collins said.

Daughter of cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya’s driver fallen ill upon hearing news of her father

Daughter ill after news of dad’s death

SEREMBAN: The daughter of cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya’s driver has fallen ill upon hearing news of her father.

Noorfazilah Ab Sani said her daughter Balqis Dayana, 12, had been crying and not eaten anything since yesterday morning after learning that Kamaruddin Shamsuddin, 44, had died.

“She has developed a headache and fever,” said Noorfazilah, 33, who is divorced from Kamaruddin, adding that the girl was fond of her father.

“He had promised to fetch her to celebrate Hari Raya at his village near Kuantan.

“When her father was first reported missing, her thoughts were about his safety and she often asked what he would have for buka puasa,” she said.

She said Kamaruddin’s son Izran Akmal, nine, had at first insisted that it could not be his father who had gone missing but he had calmed down since.

Kamaruddin’s other son, Irfan Aiman, eight, lives in Kuantan with his aunt.

Noorfazilah married Kamaruddin when he was working at the King Studio recording outfit and she had just produced a dangdut album. The couple was close then with many singers, among them Nash or Nashrudin Elias, a former husband of Sosilawati.

In KUANTAN, Kamaruddin’s mother Zainab Ahmad said she hoped that the ashes found by the police in a farm near Tanjung Sepat, Selangor, were not those of her son.

However, Zainab, 73, said if DNA tests confirmed it, then she and her family would accept it as takdir (fate).

“We are still hoping for his return,” she said when met with Kamaruddin’s sister Ramlah, 49, nephew Khairul Izwan Ismail, 29, and brother-in-law Ismail Ibrahim, 59, at her home in Indera Mahkota 2.

Khairul Izwan said he was supposed to meet and spend the night at Kamaruddin’s house in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 30 but his uncle had told him he would be in Banting with Sosilawati.

Meanwhile, the family of financial adviser Noorhisham Mohammad, 38, said they would not accept his death until they received “black and white” confirmation.

Noorhisham’s father-in-law Radin Pangat Ishak, 66, said his daughter Suzana was depressed and had taken news of her husband’s disappearance hard.

“The family was supposed to celebrate Hari Raya in Muar,” he said.
