20-year-old student ‘rescues’ her own baby

JITRA: Police saw through the ruse of a 20-year-old student who pretended that she found an infant behind her house when in reality, she had abandoned the baby girl after giving birth.

The student from a higher education institution in Selangor had initially claimed that she found the infant with her umbilical cord still attached behind her house at Taman Rasa Sayang here at about 5pm on Saturday.

She claimed that she heard the baby crying from behind her house when she was taking a bath.

She rescued the baby girl and her mother later lodged a police report.

Police went to her house to pick-up the 2.8kg baby at 8.30pm and record a statement from the student.

Investigators, who found the girl unusually tired, began to suspect something amiss when she was not consistent in her statement.

They sent her to Jitra Hospital for a check-up where the student confessed to police that she had given birth to the baby girl.

Kubang Pasu Deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Ibrahim Mohd Yusof said that the baby was healthy.

“We have remanded the woman for four days and are investigating the case under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a child,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Newly married couple killed in car crash - A teenage couple, married in January this year, were killed in an accident at Km2.2 of the Penang Bridge

Newly married couple killed in car crash

GEORGE TOWN: A teenage couple, married in January this year, were killed in an accident at Km2.2 of the Penang Bridge here on Sunday.

Car accessories salesman Teh Boh Yi, 19, and shop assistant Khor Lee Mui, 17, died of head injuries while their three friends, who were travelling with them in the car, have been warded at Penang Hospital.

One of the friends, contract worker Lee Choo Hoe, 17, was thrown out of the car and landed in the sea. Marine police rescued him two hours later.

Police said Teh, the driver of the Nissan Livina, tried to switch lanes when he lost control of the car which hit the railings at 11.30pm.

The car then swerved to the middle of the road and a lorry loaded with vegetables rammed into it from behind, Penang Traffic Operations chief Deputy Supt Abdul Rahim bin Md. Din said.

Lee said he could not remember what happened. "I was unconscious when I was thrown out of the car and woke up to find myself in the sea. I managed to cling onto the bridge pylon underneath,” he said.

The other injured are Chiam Chee Wei, 17, and Teh Bee Bee, 20.

Chiam is in the intensive care unit while Bee Bee suffered a broken right leg.
