A total of 149 babies were dumped by their parents from 2009 to August this year...

149 babies dumped since 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 149 babies were dumped by their parents from 2009 to August this year, Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Heng Seai Kie said.

She told Parliament of the total, 83 died while 66 survived.

“Fifty-nine babies were boys while 54 were girls. The other 36 babies couldn’t be identified as their bodies were decomposed when they were found,” she said in reply to Datuk Mohd Jidin Shafee (BN - Setiu).

To a supplementary question, Heng said the race and nationality of the babies could not be determined as the skin colour of the babies were similar.

She said to counter the issue of baby-dumping, the ministry had adopted a concept where it tried to assist troubled young mothers instead of bringing them to book.

When Chong Eng (DAP - Bukit Mertajam) asked whether the ministry planned to trace the fathers of the abandoned babies and charge them for abandonment, she said the police were studying the matter.

Earlier, Heng said the ministry provided shelters for teenagers and women who were pregnant out of wedlock to give birth safely as a measure to curb the baby-dumping problem.

She added that these shelters were provided through grants from the Social Welfare Department.

Heng said the department and the National Population and Family Development Board also organised programmes such as counselling, interactive workshops, awareness programmes and activities to strengthen family values.

“The ministry’s four Taman Seri Puteri institutions also provide shelter and rehabilitation for girls below 18 years old who were pregnant out of wedlock. Two Sinar Kasih centres were set up for those above 18 who require immediate protection,” she said.

“The cooperation from the Islamic Affairs Department, the Health Ministry and non-government organisations is important to curb this problem,” she added.

BOLLYWOOD, take note — here comes Ady Putra!

The amazingly talented local actor is to star alongside Shah Rukh Khan in a big-budget flick entitled Don 2.

“When my agent called me up last month and said I got the part as Shah Rukh’s lawyer, my first reaction was ‘Are you sure they’ve got the right Ady?’ Wow, it was truly unexpected,” the hunky actor tells The Daily Chilli.

Ady Putra: Has to beef up his body for the big-budget flick entitled ‘Don 2’

The 29-year-old, known for his bad boy roles in hit Malay movies like Anak Halal and Histeria, auditioned for the role in Kuala Lumpur in the middle of the year.He was informed that he was “the chosen one” last month.

“I went for a casting call handled by one of the production houses in KL,” Ady recollects.

“I’m thankful to Allah for the opportunity and the happiness that comes with it.”

He may be a Singaporean by birth, but Ady, who is married to a Malaysian, calls KL his home these days. “I’m in the process of getting my Malaysian PR soon,” he said.

Don 2, an action thriller, is the sequel to the 2006 blockbuster hit Don. It also stars Bollywood hotties Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta.

According to Ady, his part will be shot on Feb 15 and 16 in Sungai Udang, Malacca.

As part of his preparation for Don 2, the actor says he’s got to beef up his body. “You have to be in physically good shape if you want to be in a Bollywood film,” he said. “It’s a prerequisite.”

The 50% discount offer for traffic offenders to settle their fines within two weeks has put a smile on many motorists...

Mixed reaction from motorists to rebate on summonses

PETALING JAYA: The 50% discount offer for traffic offenders to settle their fines within two weeks has put a smile on many motorists while some are fuming over being short-changed.

Those who ‘ayed’ the move felt that it was a way to increase the Government’s revenue, besides clearing the backlog of summonses.

Traffic offenders who have yet to pay are clearly the ones most delighted with the discount.

But for those who settled their fines promptly prior to the discount offer, there was huge disappointment as they felt it did not pay to be law-abiding.

In other developments:

> Bus Operators Association president Datuk Ashfar Ali, who is on the summons committee headed by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Sidek Hassan, stressed that this was just a one-off discount.

> Motorists crowded police stations in most cities nationwide to take advantage of the discount.

SBS’s Giant continues to perform extremely well in the ratings on Mondays and Tuesdays, particularly as it heads to its finish next week

Nearing its finish, Giant hits ratings high
by javabeans

SBS’s Giant continues to perform extremely well in the ratings on Mondays and Tuesdays, particularly as it heads to its finish next week. The Tuesday (November 30) episode recorded its highest numbers yet with a 32.7% rating.

Giant has performed solidly through its entire run, although for most of the time it had to contend with another strong competitor in the form of MBC’s historical series Dong Yi, with KBS struggling to claim some ground with series like My Country Calls, Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child, and Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Once Dong Yi moved out of the way, Giant has been able to increase upon its low-twenties ratings and surpass 30%.

Giant, which stars Lee Beom-soo, Park Jin-hee, Joo Sang-wook, and Hwang Jung-eum, will wrap up with its last two episodes next week.

Meanwhile, MBC’s Queen of Reversals pulled up a bit to double digits with a 10.8%. KBS’s Mary Stayed Out All Night, on the other hand, has been dropping viewers and recorded a 6.7% — and although I’m watching for the cute romantic bits, I’m not surprised, since the plot is seriously lacking. It’s a bummer, when you consider its potential-to-performance ratio.

We haven’t talked a whole lot about Giant on this site, but not because it’s a bad drama; from what I hear, it’s a pretty solid show, but at 60 episodes, eek!, I just don’t have the time for that kind of commitment. But here, have a few pretty pics:

Kim Myung-min plays Joseon’s Great (mustachioed) Detective - The first poster is out for Kim Myung-min‘s upcoming mystery historical movie...

Kim Myung-min plays Joseon’s Great (mustachioed) Detective - by javabeans

The first poster is out for Kim Myung-min‘s upcoming mystery historical movie, which has undergone a slight title change to Joseon’s Great Detective: Secret of the Wolfsbane. And while I’m not a fan of the mustache on my leading men — or its tawdry cousin, the pornstache — you’ve gotta give them credit for going for the comic factor. Lulz.

This project isn’t described as a comedy (it’s a suspense mystery), but this gives me hope that we can expect a dash of humor, which is an idea I can get fully behind. Although Kim is known for his powerful, commanding roles — whether playing a cold, ambitious doctor in White Tower, a sneering orchestra conductor in Beethoven’s Virus, or a man dying of ALS in My Love By My Side — he also has a wonderful sense of humor and comic timing. (If you haven’t seen him playing a hilarious, dense, brawns-before-brains type of ex-gangster in Bad Family, I highly recommend it.)

The movie takes place in the 17th year of Joseon’s King Jeong-jo, and brings in Kim, playing the top detective of the day, to investigate a series of murders. Although his character had initially been a version of Jung Yak-yong, a real-life historical figure who was the subject of a mystery-sageuk cable drama two years ago, the description has been changed and he now plays a character named simply Kim Jin.

The film, which is based on a historical novel titled Secret of the Gate of Virtue, is set for a January 27 release. It co-stars Han Ji-min (Cain and Abel) and Oh Dal-soo (The Good, The Bad, The Weird).
