Acid attack victim completes SPM and hopes operation next month goes well - “I will be going to Selangor to see my doctor on Dec 20, 2010... she said

Acid attack victim completes SPM and hopes operation next month goes well

GEORGE TOWN: Acid attack victim Tan Hui Linn walked out from the exam hall with a huge sigh of relief after completing her final Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) paper.

While others were celebrating their “freedom”, the 18-year-old girl is worried about the plastic surgery she will undergo at the Sungai Buloh Hospital next month.

“I will be going to Selangor to see my doctor on Dec 20 for consultation before my plastic surgery operation in January,” she said when met at SMK Convent Datuk Keramat yesterday.

Wearing a facemask and protective pad on her right eye, Tan’s hands and legs were also covered with bandages and plasters.

Hoping for the best: Hui Linn (centre) looking at her notes with her friends Priscilla Wong, Gan Vanessa Ching and Kok Mun Hong at SMK Convent Datuk Keramat yesterday.

Tan is hoping to do well in the SPM as she wants to continue her studies in Form Six and is keen to take up accountancy or psychology in university.

“The final paper on Chinese comprehension and literature was difficult. However, I hope to score in Mathematics and Science,” she said.

Tan said she faced some difficulties during the examination when her sight started to become blur.

The invigilators were kind enough to give her a time extension to complete the papers.

On Oct 24, Tan and her mother Chong Swee Lin, 50, were sleeping in their home at Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim when they were splashed with acid.

Chong, who was badly burnt, died about 10 hours later. Tan sustained 60% burns on her face and upper torso.

She had to undergo several operations to restore her sight.

Her father Tan Teik Swee, 53, has been charged with murdering Chong and causing grievous hurt to her.

A 37-year-old businessman survived despite being shot thrice by a gunman who ambushed him in Bukit Tambun

Businessman survives after being ambushed by gunman

NIBONG TEBAL: A 37-year-old businessman survived despite being shot thrice by a gunman who ambushed him in Bukit Tambun here.

The man from Parit Buntar, Perak, was walking to his car after dinner with a friend when they heard gunshots. Both of them panicked and ran to hide behind their car.

It was only after the gunman fled that the businessman realised that he had been shot, once on the thigh and twice on the arm, said OCPD Supt Shafien Mamat.

“His friend then rushed him to the Seberang Jaya Hospital where he underwent immediate surgery to remove the slugs after the 11.30pm incident on Monday. His condition is stable.

“Two spent bullet casings were found at the scene and we have not ruled the possibility that the gunman could be a hitman,” said Supt Shafien when contacted yesterday.

In an unrelated incident, an 11-year-old boy was hit on the arm by an unidentified object while travelling in a car with his parents along Jalan Permatang Nibong, Bukit Mertajam,

OCPD Asst Comm Azman Abd Lah said the family was on their way to Kubang Semang when the incident occurred at 11.45pm on Monday.

“The boy, who was sitting at the back, suddenly cried out in pain. His father, age 44, immediately stopped the car and saw his son bleeding from the arm.

“There was a hole on the rear left window. We are unable to confirm if the car was hit by a bullet or something else,” he said, adding that a police report had since been lodged.

Biggest Loser Raj wins RM312k

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Viveganandam Deveraj (Raj) was crowned the winner of The Biggest Loser Asia 2, a popular weight-loss reality TV series at the season finale recorded in Mediacorp Studios here.

The 24-year-old yesterday walked away with the prize money of US$100,000 (RM312,000) after losing 67kg from his starting weight of 144kg - making him the contestant with the highest percentage of weight loss (46.53%) over a six-month period.

“Being on the show has taught me that anything is possible and I want to inspire others who want to lose weight,” said Raj, who planned to set up a charity organisation to help combat the rising obesity rate in Singapore.

“Obesity is prevalent here, especially among young children due to their sedentary lifestyles. I believe I can help them with the knowledge I have now,” added Raj, dubbed “the snake” in the competition due to his scheming ways.

He emerged the season’s top three finalists after Hong Kong’s Lori Davis Granito, 43, was voted out.

Thailand’s Atikom Laksanapanai (Nai), 26, an insurance agent trainee came in a close second with an overall weight loss percentage of 45.99%, which is 63kg from his 137kg starting weight.

Genghis Enrique Khan, 34, an internet cafe owner from the Philippines, became the second runner-up with an overall weight loss percentage of 35.19%, or a weight loss of 57kg from his original 162kg.

The second season of the reality show started out with 16 contestants from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

The contestants, who have all suffered weight-related health problems, competed for the title of The Biggest Loser 2 in a mansion at IOI Resort City in Putrajaya for 13 weeks.

They were divided into two teams with their respective trainers – the red team under Kristy Curtis and the blue team under Dave Nuku. The show was aired over 13 weeks but the competition actually went on for six months. Finalists had about two months to train back home after leaving the mansion for the finale.
