103-year-old woman is Facebook's oldest user

London: Briton Lillian Lowe still logs on to Facebook at the grand old age of 103 - making her the oldest person in the world to have an account on the social networking website.

The centenarian from Tenby, Pembrokeshire, 300 km from London, uses her iPad to check her Facebook account and keep in touch with her seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, The Sun reported on Thursday.

'I love it - it's very exciting. It's a wonderful way of finding out about things. I recommend it for any grandparents to keep in touch with family,' Lillian said.

The former hotelier, who can remember the Titanic sinking in 1912, has 34 Facebook pals.

She also chats often with great-granddaughter Kaylee, 10, and loves seeing her photos.

Lillian was first shown the website by grandson Steve, 47, a mechanic who also lent her his iPad.

'She's very keen to know what young people are doing. She might raise an eyebrow at a few of the teenage antics she sees on Facebook, but she takes it all in her stride,' Steve said.

Ivy Bean, of Bradford, who died aged 104 in July, was thought to be the previous record-holder for the oldest Facebook user.

A Facebook spokesman said: 'We can't confirm if this lady is the oldest, but Lillian shows you can never be too old to join Facebook.'

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has become the second-youngest person to be named Time magazine's Person of the Year

Facebook's Zuckerberg named Time's Person of the Year

The social media website founder is the second-youngest person to be so recognized by the magazine.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has become the second-youngest person to be named Time magazine's Person of the Year.

Zuckerberg announced the news Wednesday on — where else? — Facebook, the juggernaut social media website that has more than 500 million users worldwide.

"Being named as Time Person of the Year is a real honor and recognition of how our little team is building something that hundreds of millions of people want to use to make the world more open and connected," Zuckerberg said on his Facebook fan page. "I'm happy to be a part of that."

At 26 years old, Zuckerberg is the youngest person to be named Time's Person of the Year since aviator Charles Lindbergh, who was 25 when he was the magazine's Man of the Year in 1927.

Time said Zuckerberg was chosen "for connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives."

The magazine also noted that "The Zuck" donated $100 million to schools in Newark, N.J., this year and "weathered the potential backlash of that not-so-little movie," a reference to "The Social Network," which portrayed him as having turned friends into enemies as Facebook rose to prominence.

Facebook Founder Zuckerberg Named Time Person of Year

December 15, 2010, 10:03 AM EST
More From Businessweek

Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook Inc., was named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” today for “creating a new system of exchanging information” and “changing how we all live our lives.”

Zuckerberg, 26, began the world’s largest social-networking site in 2004. The service, with more than 500 million users, has helped people connect with each other and changed definitions of privacy, Time Managing Editor Richard Stengel said in a letter on the magazine’s website.

Mark Zuckerberg’s live with Pricsilla Chan
Zuckerberg created Facebook for college students when he was a sophomore at Harvard University. After opening the site up to people outside of higher education, the company surpassed News Corp.’s MySpace as the No. 1 social network two years ago. Facebook users now post a billion pieces of content, such as photos and messages, every day, Time said.

“There is an erosion of trust in authority, a decentralizing of power and at the same time, perhaps, a greater faith in one another,” Stengel said. “More than anyone else on the world stage, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is at the center of those changes.”

Zuckerberg is tied for No. 35 on the 2010 list of the 400 wealthiest Americans, according to Forbes magazine. His wealth jumped 245 percent to $6.9 billion, the largest percentage increase on its annual list, the magazine said.

Facebook, based in Palo Alto, California, lets users share information about themselves and communicate with “friends.” About 70 percent of the site’s users are outside of the U.S.

Indonesian fishermen find old sunken ship

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP): A sunken ship that may be several centuries old and containing green and gray ceramics has been found off remote Indonesian islands recently hit by a tsunami, officials said Thursday.

Fishermen who found the vessel believe the Oct. 26 wave off the Mentawai islands - which killed more than 500 people - lifted the 20-foot- (7-metre-) long ship from the ocean floor and pushed it closer to shore, said Yosmeri, who heads West Sumatra's Maritime and Fishery Department.

Wooden ships laden with ceramic pots, golden necklaces and valuable spices for centuries navigated Indonesian waters, a key trade route linking Asia with Europe and the Middle East. Hundreds are said to litter the seabed off West Sumatra province.

The pots, jugs and bowls found last week still need to be tested to determine their origin and age, Yosmeri said, but he added that they are similar to 14th century artifacts found inside sunken Chinese vessels.

Local fisherman say they found the wooden ship after spotting its mast 4 miles (6 kilometres) from the beach off Pagai Island, hardest hit by the tsunami.

They dove into the water and emerged with several well-preserved jugs and pots found in the hull, which they said was laden with more treasures.

Pictures of the artifacts have been sent to the capital, Jakarta, and teams will be sent to the area soon to carry out a more extensive search, Yosmeri said.

2010/12/16

PEMAIN negara sambil disokong ribuan penonton merai kemenangan ke atas Vietnam di Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil, malam tadi.

Tugas kami belum selesai, pemain begitu gembira: Rajagobal

Sejarah jadi subjek tambahan SPMU mulai 2014

2010/12/16

Strange-looking creature has angler puzzled

KOTA BARU: Avid angler Nordin Ahmad is stumped by his latest catch – a strange-looking prawn that has crab-like pincers and legs.

“I was fishing at a river in Tok Sadang in Pengkalan Chepa with my nephew when I caught this strange creature.

Unique species: Nordin holding his latest catch.

“At first I thought it was a prawn but after looking at it closer I thought it looked like a crab.

“I have shown it to everybody and maybe someone could identify it,” Nordin said at his home at Taman Tengku Anis here.

Watermelon is good for you - Nutrition in watermelon & Varieties - There are more than 1200 varieties of watermelon ranging in size from...

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.), family Cucurbitaceae) can be both the fruit and the plant of a vine-like (scrambler and trailer) plant originally from southern Africa, and is one of the most common types of melon. This flowering plant produces a special type of fruit known by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp); pepos are derived from an inferior ovary, and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon (although not in the genus Cucumis), has a smooth exterior rind (green, yellow and sometimes white) and a juicy, sweet interior flesh (usually pink, but sometimes orange, yellow, red and sometimes green if not ripe). It is also commonly used to make a variety of salads, most notably fruit salad.

A basket of watermelons displayed in a Singapore supermarket.

A watermelon contains about 6% sugar and 92% water by weight. As with many other fruits, it is a source of vitamin C.

Notable is the inner rind of the watermelon, which is usually a light green or white color. This area is edible and contains many hidden nutrients that most people avoid eating due to its unappealing flavor.

The amino acid citrulline was first extracted from watermelon and analysed. Watermelons contain a significant amount of citrulline and after consumption of several kg, an elevated concentration is measured in the blood plasma; this could be mistaken for citrullinaemia or other urea cycle disorders.

Watermelon rinds are also edible, and sometimes used as a vegetable. In China, they are stir-fried, stewed or more often pickled. When stir-fried, the de-skinned and de-fruited rind is cooked with olive oil, garlic, chili peppers, scallions, sugar and rum. Pickled watermelon rind is also commonly consumed in the Southern US. Watermelon juice can also be made into wine.

Watermelon is also mildly diuretic.

Watermelons contain large amounts of beta carotene.

Watermelon with red flesh is a significant source of lycopene.

Varieties

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev testing a watermelon on a farm in the Volga region

There are more than 1200 varieties of watermelon ranging in size from less than a pound, to more than two hundred pounds, with flesh that is red, orange, yellow or white. Several notable varieties are included here.

* Carolina Cross: This variety of watermelon produced the current world record watermelon weighing 262 pounds (119 kg). It has green skin, red flesh and commonly produces fruit between 65 and 150 pounds (29 and 68 kg). It takes about 90 days from planting to harvest.

* Yellow Crimson Watermelon: variety of watermelon that has a yellow colored flesh. This particular type of watermelon has been described as "sweeter" and more "honey" flavored than the more popular red flesh watermelon.

* Orangeglo: This variety has a very sweet orange pulp, and is a large oblong fruit weighing 9–14 kg (20–30 pounds). It has a light green rind with jagged dark green stripes. It takes about 90–100 days from planting to harvest.

* The Moon and Stars variety of watermelon has been around since 1926. The rind is purple/black and has many small yellow circles (stars) and one or two large yellow circles (moon). The melon weighs 9–23 kg (20–50 pounds).[20] The flesh is pink or red and has brown seeds. The foliage is also spotted. The time from planting to harvest is about 90 days.

* Cream of Saskatchewan: This variety consists of small round fruits, around 25 cm (10 inches) in diameter. It has a quite thin, light green with dark green striped rind, with sweet white flesh and black seeds. It can grow well in cool climates. It was originally brought to Saskatchewan, Canada by Russian immigrants. These melons take 80–85 days from planting to harvest.

Watermelon output in 2005

* Melitopolski: This variety has small round fruits roughly 28–30 cm (11–12 inches) in diameter. It is an early ripening variety that originated from the Volga River region of Russia, an area known for cultivation of watermelons. The Melitopolski watermelons are seen piled high by vendors in Moscow in summer. This variety takes around 95 days from planting to harvest.[23]
* Densuke Watermelon: This variety has round fruit up to 25 lb (11 kg). The rind is black with no stripes or spots. It is only grown on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, where up to 10 000 watermelons are produced every year. In June 2008, one of the first harvested watermelons was sold at an auction for 650 000 yen (6300 USD), making the most expensive watermelon ever sold. The average selling price is generally around 25 000 yen (250 USD)

Child found starving next to mother’s body - Police rescued the four-year-old girl, who was weak and believed to have been starving for three days...

Child found starving next to mother’s body

IT was a heart-wrenching scene when police found a starving child beside the decomposing body of her mother after they stormed into a house in Sibu, Sarawak, reported Harian Metro.

Police rescued the four-year-old girl, who was weak and believed to have been starving for three days after her mother was killed.

Quoting deputy OCPD Supt Zamani Hamdan, the paper said police believe the 34-year-old single mother had been murdered as there were injuries on her body, which was found inside a bedroom in a terrace house in Jalan Hua Kee.

“We went to the house after the landlord, who had come to collect rent, complained of a stench.

“When we entered the bedroom, we saw the girl looking extremely weak and sitting next to her mother’s body.

“Based on the condition of the woman’s body, we believe she had been murdered three days ago.

“That means the child has been without food or water since then,” he said.

The daily also reported that a 59-year-old man hanged himself with his belt at the gate of a woman’s house in Setapak Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday night after she rejected his advances.

The man was believed to have taken his own life at 11.40pm due to frustration that the 51-year-old woman would not return his feelings although they had known each other for a long time.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Zakaria Pagan said the woman, who was at home then, was unaware of the incident and was shocked to find the man’s body dangling from her front gate later.

Joseph Kosinski makes his feature film directorial debut with Tron: Legacy, while the previous film director, Steven Lisberger, returns as a producer. Jeff Bridges reprises his roles as Kevin Flynn and Clu, while Bruce Boxleitner reprises his roles as Alan Bradley and Tron. Garrett Hedlund portrays Flynn's now-adult son, Sam.The other cast members include Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett, and Michael Sheen

Plot

For twenty years, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) has been haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father Kevin (Jeff Bridges), an innovative software programmer and former CEO of ENCOM International. One night, an executive consultant for ENCOM and friend of Kevin, Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner), sends Sam to investigate a mysterious page originating from the long abandoned Flynn's Arcade. While searching for clues, Sam is suddenly transported to the digital world of The Grid. Aided by the digital warrior Quorra (Olivia Wilde), Sam is reunited with his father and together set out on a journey to return home. Encountering vehicles, weapons, and landscapes that have become far more advanced than before, father, son, and Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) must evade Clu 2, an updated version of Flynn's original hacking program, which will stop at nothing to prevent their escape.

Cast
  • Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, the former CEO of ENCOM International and creator of the popular arcade game TRON. He disappeared in 1989 while developing "a digital frontier that will reshape the human condition." Bridges also portrays Clu 2, the film's primary antagonist. A more advanced incarnation of his original hacking program, Clu 2 was designed by Flynn in 1983 to act as an "exact duplicate of himself" within the TRON world.
  • Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn, the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn who, while looking into his father's disappearance, is transported into the computer world himself.
  • Bruce Boxleitner as Alan Bradley, an executive consultant for ENCOM International and close friend of Kevin Flynn. After receiving a cryptic page from the office at Flynn's old arcade, he encourages Sam to investigate its origin. Boxleitner also portrays Tron, a security program created by Bradley for which Flynn's arcade game is named.
  • Michael Sheen as Castor/Zeus , a vivacious and renowned program in the Grid who runs the End of Line Club at the top of a tower in the TRON city.
  • Olivia Wilde as Quorra, a program, adept warrior and confidante of Kevin Flynn in the TRON system.
  • James Frain as Jarvis, CLU 2's right-hand program and chief intelligence officer.
  • Daft Punk as two MP3 programs (the equivalent of disc jockeys) at the End of Line Club.[13]
  • Beau Garrett as Jem, one of four programs known as Sirens. The Sirens operate the Grid Game armory, equipping combatants with the armor needed to compete in the games.
  • Yaya DaCosta, Serinda Swan, and Elizabeth Mathis as the other three Sirens.

The original character of Yori does not appear in the sequel. According to online media Sci Fi Wire: "Fans have been lobbying for actress Cindy Morgan to be in the movie". There are active campaigns online, such as "Yori Lives" on Facebook, which is independent of Morgan herself. "All I know is what I'm seeing online," Morgan said. "I am so thrilled and touched and excited about the fan reaction and about people talking about the first one and how it relates to the second one. I can't tell you how warm a feeling I get from that. It just means so much." No one from Tron: Legacy had contacted Morgan, and she did not directly speak with anyone from the Joe Kosinski-directed sequel.

As Dr. Lora Baines, Cindy Morgan appeared with Bruce Boxleitner (as Alan Bradley) at the Encom Press Conference in San Francisco, April 2, 2010. - source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

'Go shopping' card syndicate busted - A cloned credit card syndicate which sends its members on shopping sprees overseas to buy branded goods...

'Go shopping' card syndicate busted
By TAN SIN CHOW
sctan@thestar.com.my

GEORGE TOWN: A cloned credit card syndicate which sends its members on shopping sprees overseas to buy branded goods and then sells them at discounted prices has been busted.

Ten syndicate members, who were believed to be planning their next foreign trip with more than 170 credit cards, were arrested in two hotel rooms here.

The nine Malaysian men and a Vietnamese woman, aged between 21 and 51, were picked up at 11pm on Monday following a tip-off.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said 171 cloned foreign-issued credit cards with a total spending limit of close to RM2.7mil were seized.

He said police also seized four Hong Kong passports and a Singaporean passport, which are believed to be fake, as well as a laptop.

He said it was the biggest such seizure by Penang police this year, adding that the syndicate was believed to have been in operation for more than two years.

DCP Ayub said investigations showed that the suspects had previously travelled to Thailand to buy luxury and branded items using cloned cards.

The suspects, who are given several cloned cards each, could have been eyeing Hong Kong and Singapore for their next shopping spree.

“Our investigation found that each card has US$$5,000 (RM15,675) in credit limit,” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters here yesterday.

DCP Ayub said the modus operandi of the syndicate members was to bring back the items they bought overseas to Malaysia where they are sold at a cheaper rate.

He said the Vietnamese woman had been in the country for just about a month while the male suspects were from Penang, Kedah, Perak and Selangor.

It is learnt that eight of the seized cloned cards had embedded microchips while the rest only had security magnetic strips.

The suspects are currently under remand until tomorrow.
