Dead woman in suitcase: Man charged

A man from New York's East Harlem was arrested on Monday and charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase left on East 114th Street in Manhattan, the police said.

On Dec. 22, a pedestrian found a large black suitcase on the sidewalk just outside a residential building at 435 East 114th Street, according to the police.

When the pedestrian opened the bag, he found a woman’s body and called 911, the police said; the woman was dead when the police arrived.

The police identified the victim as Betty Williams, 28, of the Bronx. After an autopsy, the medical examiner’s office said Williams had been strangled.

The police released two surveillance videos during their investigation. One video showed a large man rolling a suitcase down the street.

Another video showed the same man paying for items at a convenience store.

After receiving a tip, the police narrowed their focus to Hassan Malik, 55.

Police said they found him in Tarrytown, NY, brought him back to the 23rd Precinct in Harlem and charged him with second-degree murder.

He was being held without bail on Tuesday.

Peranakan fever has gripped China, with fast-food chain KFC being the latest to ride the wave by launching 'Nyonya chicken wings' earlier this month

Peranakan is the new black in China.

Nonya fever sweeps China

Peranakan fever has gripped China, with fast-food chain KFC being the latest to ride the wave by launching 'Nonya chicken wings' earlier this month.

The curry-flavoured dish, advertised along with a photo of a sarong kebaya-clad woman, comes at the end of a year when Straits Chinese culture has enthralled mainlanders.

Since the Singapore drama serial The Little Nonya was shown from January in various Chinese provinces to strong reviews, interest about Peranakans has been piqued.

'Nonya (or better known as Nyonya here) is now a hip word in China,' said Shanghai-based Jacquie Tan, chief executive officer of Singapore catering company Kriston Food & Beverage Group.

Online bulletin boards buzz with discussion of the KFC product, although most posts have criticised the chicken's curry and coconut flavours as odd.

Curious Chinese netizens have posted numerous queries on Baidu asking for facts and history of the Straits Chinese.

A boy of 11 was savaged by a dog just days after his father had taken the stray in off the street...

Boy savaged by dog

A boy of 11 was savaged by a dog just days after his father had taken the stray in off the street, according to The Daily Mail.

Finn O'Mahoney's cheek was ripped open by the five-stone Chinese Shar-Pei dog, which attacked him while he was watching television on Christmas Day.

The terrified boy was only spared worse injury when his dad wrestled the dog to the floor.

Finn is recovering after hours of surgery and 18 stitches, while the dog was put down.

His father Michael, 42, along with mother Carol, 38 and sister Lily, nine, had taken pity on the dog after seeing it shivering near their home in Wolverhampton.

But as the family watched the Coronation Street Christmas special, the animal 'launched itself through the air' with no warning to attack Finn.

Michael, 42, said, "No one had shouted or made any sudden movements to frighten the dog - it just launched itself through the air without any warning at all and clamped itself on to Finn's face.

The dog just went berserk for no reason. I've never seen such ferocity from an animal.

He added, "I tried punching it to stop it but it kept snarling and biting, it was vicious. My wife just ran into the next room, she was terrified and there was a lot of blood.

We'd even been playing with the dog all day until then. We'd started calling him "the gentleman" because he was so obedient and had such a lovely posture.

I dread to think what could have happened if I hadn't been there as it could have been much worse."

Finn sustained puncture wounds to his mouth and throat, as well as a two-inch gash from his eye to his nose.

He needed two and a half hours of surgery to repair his face which had been 'hanging off' after the attack, and has been told by doctors he may need cosmetic surgery in later life.

The attack came just days after Barbara Williams, 52, was thought to have been mauled to death by a Belgian mastiff in Wallington, south London.

Jaclyn is psyched about new album

By Fiona Ho

Super-singer Jaclyn Victor is all psyched up about her new album with pop diva Ning Baizura and Shila, a finalist in the popular singing reality show, One in a Million.

“It’s not just me featuring them or them featuring me in one or two tracks. All three of us will sing in every song. That’s why the album is called Tiga Suara (Three voices),” Victor reveals.

Victor, who shot to fame after winning the inaugural Malaysian Idol competition in 2004, describes the album as “contemporary and pop-based. It’s quite a happy album.”

“There’ll be a mix of Malay and English songs,” she adds.

“One of the tracks, Mengenangmu (Remembering you), is dedicated to the late Yasmin Ahmad (famed local filmmaker) and everyone in the music world who we’ve lost.”

“One of my favourite tracks on the album besides Mengenangmu is Beribu Sesalan (A thousand regrets),” the spunky 32-year-old shares. “But I have no regrets.”

“We also have Noraniza Idris on the album. She’s known for ethnic beats. I like to experiment,” says Victor.

Tiga Suara is set for a January 6 release next year.

An African woman strangled her newborn with its own umbilical cord at Dubai Airport - The baby had turned blue but was still breathing when found in..

Mother strangles her newborn

An African woman strangled her newborn with its own umbilical cord at Dubai Airport.

The baby had turned blue but was still breathing when found in the bin, according to emirates247.com.

However, paramedics could not save his life.

According to the police, the woman gave birth to the child in the toilet at Dubai International Airport early Thursday and proceeded to strangle the baby so the child wouldn’t cry, then dumped the body in a trash bin and left the country.

A spokesperson at Dubai Police said: “We succeeded in figuring out the identity of the woman through surveillance cameras.”

The spokesperson declined to speculate on when and whether the authorities of the woman’s home country will hand her over to UAE authorities, saying it was too early to talk about this.

The woman left the country minutes after committing the alleged crime.

An official said he believes the baby might be the result of an illegal relationship, and the mother probably decided to get rid of the baby to avoid trouble.

Later, when another passenger discovered blood on the floor of the toilet at Terminal I, she called the cleaner, who discovered the newborn child in a plastic bag tied with the umbilical cord.

Police are investigating the case in cooperation with Interpol, while the dead body of the baby has been sent to Dubai Police Morgue.

Woman sees Christ in X-ray - Christians will tell you that Jesus Christ lives within all of us - but one woman from Elwood, Indiana claims to have...

X-ray of hope: Indiana woman Karen Sigler with the chest x-ray she claims shows an image of Jesus Christ.

Woman sees Christ in X-ray

Christians will tell you that Jesus Christ lives within all of us - but one woman from Elwood, Indiana, claims to have photographic evidence, according to The Daily Mail.

Karen Sigler was in hospital on Dec 12 with pneumonia when she made a truly divine discovery while looking at one of her chest x-rays.

She claims there is a clear image of Jesus Christ just above her heart - just where she hoped he might be during her health scare.

Sigler, who also recently underwent surgery for breast cancer, says the Christ-like image was not the only encouragement she received from God.

Just before her operation, she says she was shopping at the local general store down the street from her house.

She said: "I was just really scared I was going to die."

Suddenly a stranger approached her and said: 'Jesus said you're going to be healed.'

While she said the random conversation didn't calm her fears or restore her faith, she was left with undoubtable proof during her second hospital visit.

She said, "My faith just got a little stronger since I saw that Jesus was sitting on my heart and that he's there. You can see him. He's there."

Now, Sigler is hopeful. She is waiting to find out if her cancer is gone and will start chemotherapy in January.

She says she has no doubt anymore that she is going to be okay, adding: "He's gonna show himself one way or another... even if it takes an x-ray."

Misha Omar calls the role

Misha to play Dr M's wife in musical

Local singer Misha Omar will play a teenage Tun Siti Hasmah in the upcoming musical, Tun Mahathir.

The show, which will be staged in Istana Budaya from Jan 21 - 30 next year, follows the life and times of Malaysia’s fourth prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Misha will play his wife, who is currently the chancellor of a local university.

The singer, who starred as Datuk Rosnah Majid, a veteran journalist in the previous instalment of the same musical, calls the new offer "a dream come true."

"I feel like I’ve been promoted from a constable to an inspector," she says.

However, Misha admits she was quite daunted when she first landed the role.

"I didn’t think I was good enough to play Tun Dr Siti Hasmah. But I saw the role as an opportunity for me to learn, so I accepted the challenge."

"We also have less time to practice this time around," the Bunga-bunga cinta (Flowers of love) singer reveals.

"Though luckily, most of us work well under stress."

Misha adds that she hopes to meet Tun Siti Hasmah in person in order to understand the character better.

"I’m not too hopeful about it, though. I understand that Tun Siti Hasmah is very busy."

Tun Mahathir the musical was first staged in September 2010.

DUNGUN: A fishing trip for two brothers and their father nearly turned into a tragedy when their boat capsized in rough seas here.

Yaacub Osman, 54, and his sons Norafzanizam Yaacub, 26, Norhasrol Yaacub, 23, were thrown into the sea with Yaacub trapped under the deck.

His sons managed to free him before he swam to shore to get help. The two brothers, however, hung on for dear life until they were rescued.

They had left the Kuala Dungun jetty on Monday for their trip but decided to turn back when they saw the weather turning bad at about 2pm.

They were about to reach the shore when their boat was caught by huge waves, causing the vessel to capsize.

Norafzanizam and Norhasrol had to hold on to a floating oil barrel until they were spotted and picked up by a passing fishing vessel at 7.35pm.

Dungun OCPD Supt Dahlan Mohd Noor said the three men were rushed to the Dungun Hospital after they complained of breathing difficulties.

However, all of them were allowed to return home after their condition improved at about 9pm.

Tensions remained high in the Indonesian capital as football fans awaited the much-anticipated Asean Federation Football (AFF) Suzuki Cup final...

M'sian team trains at hotel as tensions remain high in Jakarta
By ERIC SAMUEL and AMY CHEW
newsdesk@thestar.com.my

JAKARTA: Tensions remained high in the Indonesian capital as football fans awaited the much-anticipated Asean Federation Football (AFF) Suzuki Cup final second-leg match tonight.

Indonesian fans are upset with the Malaysians, alleging that laser light beams had been shone on the faces of the republic’s players to distract them in the first-leg match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. Malaysia won that match 3-0.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police are serious about keeping the peace and are deploying 10,000 policemen at the Bung Karno Stadium. Police have also banned sharp weapons and the use of lasers or firecrackers by spectators. Some 85,000 fans are expected at the match.

The training session for the Malaysian team – originally scheduled to be held at the stadium amid tight security – was moved to the hotel where they are staying, for safety reasons.

Even Malaysian journalists were advised not to wear the national colours for security reasons. Many turned up in red, pretending to be Indonesian newsmen.

A trip to a shopping centre turned sour for a woman, who claimed she was punched in front of her children following an accident last Monday...

Housewife claims man punched her after accident

KUALA LUMPUR: A trip to a shopping centre turned sour for a woman, who claimed she was punched in front of her children following an accident last Monday.

Housewife Wong Lai Yee said she was in her car, turning into Ampang Point, when her vehicle knocked against a car coming from the opposite direction.

She claimed that when she got out to check the damage, the other driver started shouting at her.

“He was yelling at me, claiming that I’m being kurang ajar (rude),” said Wong during a press conference at the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department here yesterday.

Wong, 43, said she was ready to pay compensation for damage on the other car as it was her fault, adding that the paintwork was only “a little chipped off”.

“I was upset when he started yelling so I replied – ‘who is the one being kurang ajar now?’,” she said, adding that the man then punched her on her right arm.

Wong said when she told her son, who saw the incident with her younger daughter, to quickly take a photograph, the man threatened him.

“He threatened to beat my son up and demanded that he get back in the car,” she said, adding that the man then kicked her Hyundai Sonata car before driving off.

She claimed that the kick caused a dent to her car.

Wong subsequently lodged a report at the Ampang police station.

Department head Datuk Michael Chong said although road bullying was a serious matter, the number of incidences in the country was still under control.

“This is too much. There is no need to hit people or vehicles. All road bullies have to be stopped,” said Chong, adding that he would refer the case to the Ampang OCPD for investigation and action.

Beggar falls into drain – with RM4,600 in his pocket - Rescuers found the money on him during the Christmas Day incident in Penang

Beggar falls into drain – with RM4,600 in his pocket

A BEGGAR fell into a drain while sleeping by the roadside and – to the surprise of his rescuers – he had RM4,643 on him, Sin Chew Daily reported.

Rescuers found the money on him during the Christmas Day incident in Penang.

The 64-year-old man was saved by firemen and sent to a hospital. The money was in a plastic bag stuffed in his pocket.

The money was returned to the beggar when he was discharged.

A member of the public said the beggar had been around for the last three years.

“He always asks passers-by for money, saying that he needs to buy a bus ticket to go back to Taiping.”

The daily also reported about a website in Singapore that is giving tips to netizens on how to save time. The site – www.timesavers.sg – has listed 11 ways to reduce the time spent on daily chores.

Among them was a suggestion to buy seven shirts of the same pattern and colour – to save 35 minutes deciding on which shirt to wear for the day.

It also advised the people not to remove a tie knot so that it can be easily worn again and this will help save five minutes; have lunch with fewer people and driving behind an ambulance will save 45 minutes.

Stop bargaining to save 25 minutes and stop lining up in a long queue to save 45 minutes. And keep your head bald so you can save five minutes on combing.

> China Press reported that a “dog detective” team has been set up to help the public locate their missing canines.

The team, named ACC, was founded about a year ago, and is active in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

ACC’s spokesman Zhou Chen Yi said he used a beagle to help search for the missing canines.

“Beagles are born hunters,” he said.

A man who used his new car chassis number to buy a Magnum 4D Jackpot game ticket became an instant multi-millionaire when he won more than RM11mil...

RM11mil surprise for second jackpot winner
By RACHEL LAW
newsdesk@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: A man who used his new car chassis number to buy a Magnum 4D Jackpot game ticket became an instant multi-millionaire when he won more than RM11mil in prize money.

The businessman from Selangor was elated when he thought that he had won the second jackpot of RM600,000 when the results came out on Sunday.

However, when he went to the Magnum office here, he was shocked when told that he had actually won RM11,070,547.

The man didn’t realise that the 4D Jackpot game had a cascading feature which kicks in when no one wins the first prize.

During Sunday’s results, there was no winner for the RM30mil Jackpot first jackpot, while the second jackpot was more than RM600,000.

The cascading feature meant that one-third of the first prize amount cascaded down into the second jackpot, giving the second jackpot winner an additional sum in winnings.

The man, who is in his fifties, bought 8341 and 1922 as his Jackpot combination numbers, both of which were drawn as second prize and special prize respectively.

When interviewed yesterday, the man said he will use the money to expand his own business and help his son’s own business. He will also invest in a shop for his wife.

The man said he will donate a portion of his winnings to charity.

More than 200 people were made homeless when fire destroyed 58 houses in Bukit Malut, Langkawi

200 left homeless in Langkawi fire

ALOR SETAR: More than 200 people were made homeless when fire destroyed 58 houses in Bukit Malut, Langkawi.

The fire started at about 11.30pm on Monday when most of the residents in the fishing village were at home.

Langkawi Fire Station chief Yaakob Hassan said 40 personnel took more than an hour to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to another 243 houses and properties nearby.

He said the department was assisted by some 30 policemen, the Civil Defence Department and Rela.

Yaakob said the fire was put out at about 1.30am yesterday with losses estimated at about RM1mil. He said that the department was still investigating the cause of the incident.

The fire was the third that had occurred in the area since 2005 when more than 200 houses were gutted.

One of the victims Ismail Musa, 67, said that he was drinking coffee with several committee members after a village development and security meeting when a relative told him that his house was on fire.

“I could not take anything out as my house was already in flames when I got there,” he said adding that he was relieved that his family members managed to escape.

Ismail estimated the losses to be more than RM10,000.

He said that since the houses were located very close to each other, the villagers had a difficult time trying to salvage their belongings.

Newly-appointed Kedah Umno chairman Datuk Paduka Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah announced RM1,000 in aid to each of the families whose houses were destroyed in the fire.

He said that half of the aid was from the Federal Government while the rest from the state Umno.

Ahmad Bashah said that the aid would be handed out on Dec 31. “We will also provide school uniforms to children from the affected families,” he said.
