KLANG: Lai Yok Shan has only one arm but that did not stop the four-year-old from having fun with her fellow classmates in pre- kindergarten class.
Her father, mechanic Lai Kian Khee, 26, said Yok Shan lost her left arm due to medical negligence at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) in 2007.
Four-year-old Lai Yok Shan is all smiles to be sent for pre-kindergarten classes in Klang. The child lost her left arm due to medical negligence in 2007. Sending her off are father Lai Kien Kee and mother Nut Tuemthong. Her arm turned gangrenous and dropped off after a houseman at HTAR inserted an intravenous needle into a muscle instead of a blood vessel when the newborn was placed in an incubator.
The Government accepted responsibility and offered an ex-gratia payment to Yok Shan’s parents, who initially turned it down.
However, Yok Shan’s family reached a settlement with the Government two years ago and received a generous sum in addition to a lump-sum payment for her prosthesis which will need to be replaced every few years.
Lai, who refused to disclose the amount he received, said he had yet to get Yok Shan a mechanical arm.
However, he said Yok Shan’s condition had not stopped other children from playing with her.
“I thought they would avoid her but that has not happened.
“She does not show any frustration anymore and is really happy despite knowing other children have two arms,” Lai said.
He added that Yok Shan did throw tantrums when she could not play with some of her toys when she was younger.
She, however, improvised her movements and had managed to do well despite only having one arm, he said.
Eager student: Yok Shan learning origami with the help of a teacher at a kindergarten in Klang yesterday. Lai added that he and his wife Nut Tuemthong are grateful that Yok Shan is alive and doing well.
“I am glad that Yok Shan is around to put a smile on our faces,” he said.

By TAN SIN CHOW
sctan@thestar.com.my
GEORGE TOWN: Tuition teacher Lim Chee Hwa, who fell to his death from a five-storey block of shoplots in Perak Road here, was believed to be involved in a love triangle.
A colleague, who declined to be named, claimed Lim, 21, who had a girlfriend in the Klang Valley, had revealed to him that he was very “close” to one of his Form Two students and had gone out with her several times.
“Lim looked troubled and got restless easily over the past few days, probably because he was having problems with his girlfriend.
“I had also advised him to tread with caution over his relationship with the student,” he claimed when met at the Penang Hospital mortuary on Monday night.
On Sunday, Lim, who had just celebrated his 21st birthday, was found sprawled at 9.50pm in the car park area.
Lim started as a teacher at the centre’s branch in Johor three years ago before coming here a year ago.
The colleague, in his 20s, said he and Lim were preparing for the new school term and syllabus at the tuition centre, located on the fifth floor.
“He rushed out immediately after receiving a call. I chased after him and reached for his hand but it was too late,” he said.
Lim’s mother Phang Kwee Chin, 45, however, said she had never heard of her son facing such problems.
“Chee Hwa never told us of any girlfriends. I don’t believe it,” Phang said before claiming her son’s body at the mortuary here.
Also present were Lim’s brother Chee Chin, 26, and other family members.
Phang said her son told her that he was interested in a woman who rejected his advances years ago.
“I have never heard him having any relationship. He was always busy with tuition work,” she said.
Meanwhile, Chee Chin pleaded for the return of his brother’s handphone which went missing after the incident.
“There could be important numbers or details saved inside the phone.
“We need to know who was the last person my brother had spoken to before his death,” he said.
Chee Chin can be reached at 016-7108611.
Lim’s body will be cremated tomorrow at his hometown in Pekas Nenas, Johor.

By KANG SOON CHEN
educate@thestar.com.my
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 160 students were barred from entering their classrooms at an international school in Jalan Ampang on Monday because their parents had apparently failed to pay the school fees on time.
The students – over 100 primary school pupils and 60 secondary school students – were “detained” at the library and the arts room, respectively, from 8am till lunchtime on the first day of school.
A parent alerted The Star about the students’ predicament.
But the school stood its ground and maintained that it had little choice but to keep the students who had failed to pay their fees on time out of class.
The principal said it was a policy that students paid the fees of the next term before the current term ended.
Showing a letter dated Nov 18, she said, the school administration had sent four letters informing parents about the due date and the consequences of late payment.
“We have no choice but to stop the students from entering the classrooms when their parents did not pay the school fees,” she said.
Parents expressed unhappiness over their children’s detention.
“Imagine the distress the students were put under when they were singled out in front of their friends and not allowed to attend lessons on the first day of school,” said one parent.
She claimed that parents were never informed about the due date to pay the fees.
“We were only told that we would get a 20% discount if we pay before Nov 30,” she said.
After paying the school fees of her children, aged 12 and 14, the parent was shocked when she was asked to pay an additional 20% as penalty for late payment.
School fees for a student in the international school cost up to RM3,500 per semester.

Jerry gets emotional over his ex, Lin Chi-Ling
Who knew? Taiwanese actor Jerry Yan has a soft side too.
On Dec 20 last year, Jerry attended the recording of Hunan TV's Happy Camp. He grew quiet when he saw the video clip of Lin Chi-Ling tearing when talking about him.
The host asked if he would embrace love bravely. Jerry, who had admitted to being rather childish, replied he "didn't know".
After the programme was aired on Jan 1, netizens left messages like "It's a different him, a more emotional Jerry Yan" on microblogging site Weibo.
Chi-Ling and Jerry appeared as guests on Happy Camp consecutively. In October last year, Chi-ling cried on the show. The model was touched by a paragraph regarding her in Jerry's book 9314 Man and Boy. She also talked about her relationship with Jerry for the first time.
"I am a simple girl after all. I longed for love, and I longed to be loved. I'm different now, I'll embrace love," said Chi-Ling, who seemed to treasure this past relationship.
When Jerry saw the video clip, he became quiet. When asked if he would embrace love courageously, he choked and said, "I am very childish at times, I want to be loved and cared for. However, for a girl, she would feel insecure. I still need to grow up."
The actor expressed that he talked about Chi-Ling in his book because she is really a good girl.
"When she told the public that I'm the only person in the world who treats her best, I know I have to become a better man. I let her go, because I really loved her; I know she would meet a better person," said Jerry.
He added he was childish in the past. He would love and care for a girl in his own ways, but did not consider if the other party liked it or not. After Jerry showed this softer side on television, fans praised him for "being different".
On the programme, Jerry was tested on how he would spend a monthly income of RMB$10,000 (RM4600). The actor revealed that apart from his handphone bills, he did not have any expenses.
Jerry explained that his colleagues usually organise his schedules, and thus he did not have any expenses. That would leave at least RMB$8,000 (RM3,700) for him to splurge on his girlfriend.
"I like buying things for my girlfriend. If the things I buy for her fills her room, she would be reminded of me each time she returns home," said Jerry.

Carina doesn't mind working with 'rival' Maggie
Contrary to popular belief, Carina Lau and Maggie Cheung are not enemies.
In fact, Lau, an established actress in Hong Kong, said that she does not mind collaborating with Cheung, who is now one of the most celebrated actresses in the international film scene.
For decades, the pair has been painted as rivals in love, as Lau’s husband, Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, was romantically linked to his frequent co-star Cheung, before he tied the knot with Lau in Bhutan.
(From left) Carina Lau and Tony Leung are a loving couple.
Speaking to Leung’s ex-girlfriend Margie Tsang on a talk show recently, Lau, 45, showed no signs of feeling insecure over the close friendship her husband shares with Cheung, 46.
“I don’t know whether we will have the chance and the right script, but if we can star in a movie together, the poster alone will look great… Have you seen the poster of Infernal Affairs starring Tony Leung and Andy Lau? You don’t have to say anything and the audience would be eager to watch the film.
“If one day a director gets a script that is right for Maggie and I, I think that’d be one heck of a movie,” she said.

Handout photo dated 01 January 2011 and released 04 January 2011 by the Dagsa family shows relatives (faces pixelated to protect identities) of killed local village councilman Reynaldo Dagsa (not in photo) posing for a picture taken by Dagsa, as a gunman (L) pointing a pistol and suspected accomplice (R) are seen in the background in Coloocan City, east of Manila, Philippines.
Victim snaps picture of gunman who killed him
Handout photo dated 01 January 2011 and released 04 January 2011 by the Dagsa family shows relatives (faces pixelated to protect identities) of killed local village councilman Reynaldo Dagsa (not in photo) posing for a picture taken by Dagsa, as a gunman (L) pointing a pistol and suspected accomplice (R) are seen in the background in Coloocan City, east of Manila, Philippines.
Philippine police investigating the New Year's Eve shooting death of a local councilman did not have to look further than the last photograph the victim took. That photo led to the arrest of two suspects.
The picture, taken outside the councilman's house in metropolitan Manila, clearly shows a man aiming his gun from behind the victim's smiling three-member family, seconds before he was shot.
The relatives - Councilman Reynaldo Dagsa's wife, daughter and mother-in-law - are seen standing beside the family's car, which has lights on, and the gunman, wearing a baseball cap, is bracing himself against the vehicle and pointing his gun at Dagsa. His face is slightly obscured by the gun.
The car was parked along an alley outside the Dagsas' house. Also in the right corner of the photograph is a man police identified as the assassin's lookout.
Police said Tuesday that Dagsa was shot seconds later and died of wounds by the time he reached a hospital. His family gave police the photo, which ran on the Philippine Daily Inquirer's front page Tuesday.
Caloocan city police chief Jude Santos said a man identified as the gunman in the picture was arrested Monday. His accomplice also was arrested in a separate raid in Manila the same day, Santos said.
He said the main suspect was a car thief who was out on bail and likely sought revenge against Dagsa for ordering his arrest last year.
Dagsa's wife and daughter, speaking to reporters at their home Tuesday, said the victim had asked them to wake him up before the stroke of midnight so he could join in the usually noisy New Year's street revelry that comes with lots of firecrackers.
The family members said they did not hear a gunshot because the firecrackers were exploding all around them. They only saw Dagsa falling to the ground after he was hit.
They said they rushed him to the hospital but it was too late. - AP

Cheng, 71, is a Hong Kong resident who now lives in China with eight dogs, which he said could help him withstand his loneliness.
When his father passed away in 2000, Cheng inherited some HK$2mil (RM788,800).
"Since then, I lived a wild life and had many mistresses in China. My wife jumped off a building five years later and my daughter left me.
"In just seven years, I finished spending all my inheritance."
Asked why he didn't go back to Hong Kong and live on the government's allowance, Cheng said he was too ashamed to return home.
Besides, he could not leave his dogs, which have become his 'family'.
Cheng said he starting by rearing a female dog – Lili – that he found roaming on the streets two years ago.
Then, a friend gave him three others – Lachang, Xishi and Niuniu.
The other four – Ah Fu, Ah Xing, Ah Gao and Ah Zhao - are babies of Lili, whose 'husband' has gone missing.
Cheng said he picked up leftovers from fast-food restaurants to feed the dogs.
Miss Zhou, a friend who has known Cheng for more than 10 years, has been sending food to him regularly.
Cheng now lives in a house he bought many years ago in which are many photographs of him posing with several pretty women.

Proud mother Ashley Fansler with daughter Madisen Carin and son Aiden Everette.
Twins born in different years
A set of fraternal twins was born in Rockford, Illinois, USA. However, the twins don't share the same birthdate and birth year.
Ashley Fansler first gave birth to her daughter, Madisen Carin at 11:59pm on Dec 31, 2010. Then a minute later, Jan 1, 2011 at 12am, her twin brother, Aiden Everette, was born.
The proud father, Brandon Lewis, was beside his partner while giving birth. "When they first came out, I was sitting there next to her, holding her hand. I got really numb, my arms were numb all over, and I was sweating," he said.
The twins were delivered at Rockford Memorial Hospital via caesarean section. It was a choice offered by their doctor to have distinctive birthday for each baby because of the unique timing, so the parents decided to take this rare opportunity.
"It was definitely worth the wait," said Fansler.
And for the proud new dad, it was the best New Year countdown ever. - www.allvoices.com

Dead fetus found in airplane bathroom
A dead fetus has been found in the bathroom of a plane that arrived in Manila.
The gruesome discovery comes months after a woman gave birth on another flight to Manila and dumped the live infant in an airplane trash bag.
Aviation police investigator Marcelino Peninoy says a cleaner discovered the remains of the 5- to 6-month-old male fetus Monday on the Etihad Airways aircraft after it arrived from Abu Dhabi.
The identity of the mother was unclear, though millions of Filipinos work abroad.
Abortion is illegal in the Philippines and the mother could face charges if she terminated the pregnancy.
Last September, a returning Filipino worker who abandoned her baby after giving birth on a plane claimed she was raped by her employer.

The boy in leg irons when he appeared in court.
10-yr-old boy charged with shooting mother
A 10-year-old American boy was charged as a juvenile with murder in the fatal shooting of his mother after authorities said he told a neighbour about the killing.
The boy appeared Monday in a Holmes County courtroom with his attorney, who entered the juvenile equivalent of a not guilty plea. A judge ordered that the boy remain in Richland County Juvenile Detention as authorities investigate the shooting.
Deborah McVay, 46, was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head Sunday night in Big Prairie, located about midway between Cleveland and Columbus, Holmes County Sheriff Tim Zimmerly said. Paramedics found McVay lying facedown on her living room floor, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, Zimmerly said.
Authorities went to the house, in rolling farmland, after a neighbor called a sheriff's dispatcher to say McVay's son had come to her home and said he had just shot his mother.
"I'm her neighbor. I'm over here. She's bleeding from her head," the neighbor tells a dispatcher. When the dispatcher asks "Is she breathing?" the neighbor answers, "No, she's bleeding."
"The neighbors came over and got me and said the mom got shot in the head," the neighbor says.
Another neighbor who knew the boy said Monday that the allegations were shocking. Ron Martin, 43, said the boy occasionally visited Martin's family to swim in their pool.
"He wasn't a bad kid, but he has had some problems in the school," Martin said, though, "never anything that you would have dreamed that he would go out and shoot his mother."
County Prosecutor Steve Knowling said authorities do not plan to prosecute the boy as an adult. Defense attorney Andrew Hyde said he plans to argue for the boy's release so he can stay with a family member.
Hyde said he did not have the facts of the case, including any information on whether the shooting may have been accidental, and that he couldn't comment further.
Outside McVay's home on Monday, another son, 21-year-old Josh Mike, described her as "a very loving lady" who ran her own home health care business and served the mentally disabled. Mike would not comment on the allegations against his brother.
The sheriff said McVay has a 15-year-old daughter who is staying with relatives. It is unclear whether she witnessed the shooting. It's also unclear whether McVay is married.
Knowling said that in more than two decades working in the legal system in the county, he has not seen a similar case.
"We don't have homicides here, period," he said. "I've got nothing to compare it to."
McVay's body was transported to the Stark County Coroner's office for an autopsy. Results were expected on Tuesday. - AP

Secret Garden concert doubles as finale shoot
by javabeans |
With its popularity soaring, weekend drama Secret Garden is planning an OST concert to be held next weekend, just in time for the drama’s finale. It will be held at the Children’s Park Dome Art Hall on January 15, and will feature performances by artists Baek Ji-young and 4Men, who are both on the soundtrack, as well as actors Yoon Sang-hyun and even Hyun Bin.
The drama’s soundtrack has been selling briskly online as well as offline; the first CD (OST parts 1 and 2) has sold out of its 30,000 copies. The second CD (parts 3 and 4) recorded nearly 30,000 pre-orders as soon as its release date, January 3, was announced. A part 5 is planned, which will feature Hyun Bin’s version of the song “That Man,” which already has two versions in circulation (one being “That Woman”).
My first thought was that it was odd timing to schedule the concert for broadcast night — great way to keep fans from watching, right? — but it appears they’ve got that covered. The concert runs from 8 to 10 pm, after which the roughly 2,000 attendees will be able to watch the 10 pm broadcast live.
The concert will be pulling double-duty, because footage from the Saturday night show will then be used in Sunday night’s finale broadcast. Talk about cutting it close with the live-shoot. (I know it’s common for a drama’s final episode to be shot a day or two before it airs, but I’ll never get over thinking that isn’t CRAZY.)
The pricing has drawn some disgruntled complaints, however, as many feel the 99,000 won price tag is too steep (close to $90 USD). Concert organizers countered by saying the quality of the show will be greater than ordinary pop concerts. (O rly?) But in the end, I suspect enough fans will be happy to pay up to get to see Yoon Sang-hyun and Hyun Bin in person.
