Sabah floods: 2,084 evacuated in Kota Marudu; more rain ahead
By MUGUNTAN VANAR
KOTA KINABALU: Six days of non-stop storms and rain in northern Sabah has flooded a number of town rain, with the worst hit being Kota Marudu.
The situation there has become critical with 2,084 people from 19 low-lying villages evacuated to 10 relief centres by Monday with no signs of the weather letting up any time soon.
Kota Marudu MP Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili, whop visited victims at evacuation centres, said that all necessary assistance was being provided to the victims and advised people not to take any unnecessary risk during the floods.
Flash floods were reported in Lahad Datu, Beluran and certain areas of Pitas while many rural roads, including those from plantations have been cut off by floods making it difficult for vegetable farmers to send their produce to the main towns.
On Saturday two people Lo Phang, 59, and Santi Muktar, 16, were in killed in landslips at Bandar Ramai in east coast Sandakan while bad weather was also blamed for the deaths of four people who drowned when their boat capsized on Friday near Tabangka island off Sandakan.
Weathermen are forecasting more rain, especially in the northern districts of Kota Marudu, Pitas, Sandakan and Beluran.
Meteorological Department director Abdul Malik Tussin said the bad weather from Jan 25 was due to strong easterly winds hitting Sabah’s north and east coast areas.
The rain and floods are expected to further worsen the soaring prices of seafood and vegetables ahead of Chinese New Year.

Ex-Anne Klein designer Charles Nolan dies in NY
Ex-Anne Klein designer Charles Nolan dies in NY
NEW YORK (AP): Fashion designer Charles Nolan, known to have a passion for American classics but skew them with a modern edge and personal touch, died Sunday at age 53.
Nolan, who also was noted for his political interest, had battled cancer several years ago, and it came back this past fall and moved aggressively, said Maggie Savage, the vintage buyer for the Charles Nolan store in Manhattan's Meatpacking neighborhood.
The store was open Sunday, said Savage, who added that its future was unclear but that she hoped it would continue.
Women's Wear Daily, which first reported Nolan's death on its website, said he died of liver cancer.
Nolan took a hiatus from the fashion industry in 2003 and worked on former Democratic Vermont Gov. Howard Dean's presidential campaign.
"He was a wonderful, very matter-of-fact person," Dean told WWD. "For someone who had a tall record in the world of fashion, he was surprisingly unimpressed with his own success."
Nolan returned to the fashion world in 2004 with his own label. This time, however, the former designer for corporate fashion houses Anne Klein and Ellen Tracy scaled back and put his own spin on everything, down to the furniture in his store and his off-the-beaten-path runway shows. In one recent season, he featured Olympian Dara Torres on the catwalk; the year before that, dancers from the American Ballet Theater were his models.
A review of the spring 2008 collection on Style.com said Nolan seemed inspired by American sportswear pioneer Claire McCardell.
"The collection, accordingly, had an innocent, Kennedy-era Camelot mood," the review said. "It featured many sweet dresses and smart Jackie O. coats and ended with a very traditional bride."
Nolan graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and apprenticed under Bill Blass and Christian Dior before moving to Ellen Tracy. In 2001, Anne Klein hired him to revive its image as a hipper, more fashion-forward brand.
Nolan, a native New Yorker, was a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
His partner was Andrew Tobias, a financial writer and treasurer for the Democratic National Committee.

Johnny Depp buys RM42.5mil home in Venice
Johnny Depp has splashed out on an £8.5mil (RM42.5mil) home in Venice after falling in love with the city during filming last year.
The 47-year-old actor spent several months in the Italian city with his family while shooting The Tourist with Angelina Jolie and he was reportedly so besotted with the stunning location, he has bought the 17th century Palazzo Dona Sangiantoffetti.
According to local newspaper La Nuova Venezia, the Hollywood star outbid an Arab prince for the empty building which is one of the only available homes overlooking the famous Grand Canal.
Johnny - who has two children Lily-Rose, 11, and eight-year-old Jack with his French partner Vanessa Paradis - has previously spoken of his love for the city and revealed he loved to explore late at night when the streets were quiet.
He said: "My experience of Venice really happened between 10pm and 2am when the streets closed and I was able to walk around and experience the poetry of Venice, the ghosts of Venice, all those wonderful dark alleys.
"For an actor being able to film within the confines of that magical city certainly helps... The city's magic shone through completely."
While the actor and his family spent most of their time at their estate in France, he also owns a home in Hollywood and a 45 acre island in the Bahamas.

Mum kills 2 teen kids for 'talking back'
A woman in Tampa, Florida, in the US, was sick of her teenage children talking back to her, so she bought a .38-caliber pistol and planned their murder and her suicide.
Julie Schenecker, 50, shot her 13-year-old son Beau Thursday evening after driving him home from football practice.

Then she walked upstairs and shot her 16-year-old daughter Calyx in the back of the head as she did homework.
With their blood on her clothing, the woman remained at the Tampa Palms house all night.
Police didn't arrive until the next morning, after Schenecker's mother called them from Texas, worried because she couldn't reach her daughter, whom she believed was depressed.
Schenecker admitted to killing her children and showed no remorse.
Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said no explanation could help people truly understand why it happened.
"She did tell us that they talked back and they were mouthy," she said.
The children's father, Col. Parker Schenecker, 48, was informed Friday that his wife killed their children, McElroy said.
He was in Qatar when the shootings happened.

Neighbours and school officials described the children as bright, polite and athletic.
"Calyx was a very sweet girl, always soft spoken, always quiet - a real sweetheart," neighbour Seema Jain was quoted as saying by the St Petersburg Times.
"I just can't comprehend why this has happened to them."

Woman gang-raped in car - A 25-year-old woman in India was gang-raped in a moving car by four men who promised her a job
A 25-year-old woman in India was gang-raped in a moving car by four men who promised her a job.
One of the four-men accused is the kin of an Uttar Pradesh minister, according to the Times Of India.
The four men took turns at raping her in a moving car between 2pm and 4.30pm recently.
One of the men intimidated the married woman with a pistol.
After raping the woman, they dropped her off and warned her against telling anyone about the ordeal.
The minister's relative and the son of a well-known Modinagar doctor have been arrested.
All those involved in the alleged gang rape are affluent real estate agents and colonizers.
According to a police officer, the woman, went into the car after a woman friend introduced her to the four men.
She said that these influential men could help her get a job in a boutique.
The drive turned out to be a nightmare.

Elderly killed by neglect
More than 600 care-home residents in the United Kingdomhave died of thirst in the past five years, The Daily Mail revealed.
Shocking figures also show that scores of vulnerable pensioners were effectively left to starve to death.
The true toll may be even higher because victims of care home neglect who die in hospital are not included in the totals.
During Labour’s period in power the number of deaths linked to dehydration doubled while those involving superbugs rose sevenfold.
The Daily Mail asked the Office for National Statistics to analyse the death certificates of care home residents in England and Wales between 2005 and 2009.
Their experts uncovered 667 victims of dehydration and 157 of malnutrition.
These numbers are likely to be a massive underestimate because few people in care homes are tested for the infections.
Neil Duncan-Jordan of the National Pensioners Convention said, "The fact that people are dying from these sorts of causes is absolutely shocking in the 21st century."
"What it shows is that a significant number of older people in our care homes are getting substandard, third-rate attention. Yet the cost of staying in a care home is huge – the average is between £600 (RM3,000) and £800 (RM4,000) a week."
“And yet for that, no one helps you eat your meals, no one ensures you are properly turned in bed, and no one makes sure you have had enough to drink," he said.

WiFi gets wide welcome - Most restaurant owners have described WiFi as a necessary service and welcomed the plan...
PETALING JAYA: Most restaurant owners have described WiFi as a necessary service and welcomed the plan to make it compulsory for them to offer the service.
However, there were also those who felt that making it compulsory would eat into their profits and result in more “seat warmers.”
Palate Palette proprietor Su Ann Wong said free WiFi services for customers was a must in the current IT era. She said Internet services had brought in more customers to her restaurant.
“It will be hard to survive without it. There were times where customers left when the WiFi service was down,” said the 33-year-old, who relies on the social networking site Facebook to draw in more customers.
On Friday, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail announced that all restaurants in the city would have to provide WiFi services by next year.
Presently, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) only encourages restaurants to provide the service but the condition will be implemented as part of the business licence for 2012.
Wong urged the Government to provide fast and reliable WiFi services to restaurants in order to encourage more operators to provide the service.
“This would encourage more restaurant owners to provide the service for their customers,” she added.
Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) president Noorul Hassan Saul Hameed said the Government should provide incentives to encourage more restaurant operators to provide the service but did not want it made compulsory.
“Customers wants to be connected via the Internet everywhere they go. But some restaurant owners may not be able to bear the extra costs involved,” he said.
Sri Nirvana Maju owner Amutha Devi disagreed that WiFi services would help attract more patrons to a restaurant, saying more patrons would sit for hours with just a drink.
“There are customers who use their own broadband modem with their laptops and order only a drink, while others queue up for seats,” said the 43-year-old, adding that her workers had to resort to asking them to vacate their seats at times.
“It is not right but we have no choice. There are just too many customers and too little space,” said Amutha.

The director was responding to recent reports in The Sun tabloid of London which highlighted the case where a Malaysian student was gang-raped by seven Russian men, including an intelligence officer.
The report alleged that the girl was drugged before she was sexually assaulted and the entire ordeal was filmed.

Facebook founder faces Facebook actor
Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his "The Social Network" doppelganger Jesse Eisenberg made friends on "Saturday Night Live."
Zuckerberg joined host Eisenberg for the opening monologue of the show Saturday. The two said they had never met, despite Eisenberg playing Zuckerberg in the widely hailed, Oscar-nominated film.
Cast member Andy Samberg tried his own impression of the Facebook CEO but quickly left - exclaiming "Awkward!" once Zuckerberg took the stage.
Eisenberg told Zuckerberg that he liked him on "60 Minutes" and then asked if he had seen "The Social Network." Zuckerberg, who has called the film inaccurate, responded that he had seen the film and that it was "interesting."
Eisenberg accepted that answer and the two high-fived. - AP

Man locks wife in cellar for 16 years
A man has been arrested on suspicion of keeping his wife locked in their cellar for 16 years while he lived with another woman.
Sebastiana Aparecida Groppo, 64, was found in the filthy basement of the house in Sorocaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, by police acting on a tip-off.
They arrested her husband Joao Batista Groppo, also 64, and the woman who had been living with him on charges of illegal imprisonment on Wednesday, The Sun of UK reported.
Sorocaba Police Inspector Ana Luiza Salomone said: "She was found without clothes, wrapped up in a blanket.
"The windows had been shuttered and were covered in mould.
"Groppo had apparently kept his wife imprisoned for two periods totalling 16 years, the second coming after 2003 when their son died in an accident."
He told police that he had locked up his wife of 42 years because she was mentally ill and aggressive.
But Inspector Ana Luiza Salomone said while she had showed some signs of mental problems, they could have been caused by the cruelty she suffered.
She added: "Groppo and his companion could face up to eight years in prison.
"His wife showed no signs of being aggressive and had no serious health problems."

Mum wants Bi-Anne with her - After being separated from her daughter Low Bi-Anne for eight years, London-based restaurant manager Tan Siew Siew...
Mum wants Bi-Anne with her
By HARIATI AZIZAN
sunday@thestar.com.my
PETALING JAYA: After being separated from her daughter Low Bi-Anne for eight years, London-based restaurant manager Tan Siew Siew is hoping to be reunited with her soon.
“I love Bi-Anne most dearly and can’t wait to begin a new life with her,” Tan told Sunday Star in an e-mail interview.
Since she won custody of Bi-Anne in 2008, Tan, 38, has been checking out the primary schools near her flat in London.
“I want to provide her with all motherly love and care that she has not had previously,” said Tan, breaking her silence over the tussle with her ex-husband Low Swee Siong, 41, for custody of Bi-Anne.
On Friday, the Court of Appeal ordered for a full hearing of an appeal in the custody battle of the 11-year-old next month after a closed-door video conferencing mediation between Bi-Anne, her real-estate negotiator father Low and Tan reached a deadlock.
Happier times: Tan hugging her daughter Bi-Anne (then seven years old) in a picture taken in 2006. Tan has been checking out primary schools near her flat in London since winning custody of her child in 2008. Tan expressed hope that the dispute could be settled quickly.
She added that the custody case had left her emotionally anguished.
The couple was married in 1999 but in 2002, Tan returned to London alone, leaving her husband and daughter in Malaysia after he accused her of having an affair with another man.
“I was forced to separate from my husband because of his unreasonable behaviour. I left Malaysia when Bi-Anne was still a baby because that’s the only way I could leave the man I had wrongly chosen,” she said.
In 2006, both parties filed for divorce and custody of Bi-Anne was given to the father.
Tan subsequently won custody and Low was given reasonable access.
However, Bi-Anne insisted that she wanted to live with her father.
According to R. Pushpa Ratnam, one of the lawyers representing Bi-Anne’s father, mediation failed because Tan wanted Bi-Anne to live in London for six months and the child to be with her father for another six months – which was not beneficial for the child.
However, Tan said: “I never proposed six months in London and six months in Kuala Lumpur. I said I wanted Bi-Anne to come to live with me in London. I also said that I would bring her back to Malaysia every summer during her school holidays to see her father.
“My ex-husband would be welcome to visit Bi-Anne in London at anytime that is convenient to her and myself.”
On her refusal to return to Malaysia, Tan said she had already built her career in London.

Bi-Anne custody case: Mediation fails
By NURBAITI HAMDAN
PUTRAJAYA: The mediation process in the case of 11-year-old Low Bi-Anne, who is caught in a custody battle, has failed to reach a settlement.
The 90-minute mediation took place at the Court of Appeal here on Friday via video conferencing between real estate negotiator Low Swee Siong and his ex-wife Tan Siew Siew who is a London-based restaurant manager.
Justice Low Hop Bing, who was present in the mediation, fixed Feb 16 for all appeals in the case to be heard before a three-man panel after both parties could not come to an agreement.
Bi-Anne appeared in good spirits and was seen chatting with her relatives and friends before she went into the courtroom.
She, however, emerged from the 90-minute mediation at 6.15pm teary-eyed and glum.
Co-counsel Pushpa Ratnam, for Swee Siong, told reporters that Tan had suggested that Bi-Anne spend six months with her in Britain and six months with her father in Malaysia.
Pushpa said Bi-Anne disagreed as she refuses to leave the country.
"The child has made her wishes clear that she wants to stay with her father. If the mother comes back to the country, Bi-Anne agrees to spend time with her," she said.
Asked by reporters, Bi-Anne said she was upset that the mediation could not reach a favourable agreement.

A woman with a mission

She has been labelled the Terminator by human traffickers. For her untiring efforts in fighting sex slavery and exploitation of women and children, Anuradha Koirala was chosen CNN Hero 2010. Sunday Star catches up with this feisty woman.
WITH a twinkle in her eyes and her hands clasped, Anuradha Koirala greets everybody she meets with the customary Namaste greeting. “Call me Dijuu (elder sister in Nepalese),” says the motherly figure with a warm smile that instantly draws you to her. But if you’re a human trafficker, you had better watch out because Koirala is out to get you!
The founder and executive director of Maiti (Mother’s Home) Nepal personally raids brothels in India to rescue trafficked Nepalese girls and brings them back home. And she even patrols the India-Nepali border to keep a lookout for vans and buses crossing the border that may be used to traffick women and children.
Maiti has saved more than 12,000 girls from sex slavery and prevented 45,000 children and women from being trafficked at the border.
For her untiring efforts, Koirala was named CNN Hero 2010, chosen in an online poll of more than two million people.
She has also won about 30 other awards in addition to being made an honorary minister in Nepal. Because of her efforts, Sept 5 is designated anti-trafficking day in Nepal.
Koirala does not see the CNN award as an individual recognition, saying it is more a recognition for the seriousness of human trafficking.
“For me, it means that globally, people have recognised the issue of trafficking. All these people consider it a heinous crime and want to fight it together,” she says during a press interview at the Asia Pacific Rule of Law Conference organised by the World Justice Project in Kuala Lumpur.
She relates the story where a young girl who was sexually exploited and contracted AIDS died in her arms a few years ago.
Workers at the crematorium, which normally charged 850 Nepali rupees, demanded 8,000 rupees for the funeral costs because they were scared of contracting AIDS from the dead girl. They eventually settled for 7,000 rupees.
“People talk about human and child rights but even after her death, people were bargaining over her body,” says Koirala.
More recently, she had to deal with two horrific cases of domestic workers being abused in the Middle East. One of the girls returned from Lebanon with broken legs and could no longer speak after her employer threw her down from the fifth floor of a building.
“I feel heartbroken. I feel all of us are inhuman because we have not taken these children as our sisters, our daughters, our child. If we start taking them as our own children, we will feel the pain,” she says.
She also tells of the struggles of young girls who are given hormone injections, raped up to 20 times a day, not given food, locked up and burned with irons.
“It hurts me a lot but it also keeps me going. I never regret that I do this work.”
She is so angry with traffickers that she wants the death penalty imposed on them, even though she knows capital punishment is a violation of human rights.
Maiti conducts awareness campaigns in villages and brings along journalists, doctors, nurses, the police and lawyers to spread the message.
At functions, the police vans play songs to spread the message against trafficking while the lawyers talk about the consequences of a trafficker being caught. Girls who have been victims relate their stories. The message is for everybody – the girls, parents and possible traffickers in the crowd.
“They (traffickers) give false promises and assurances to the parents.”
A typical day for Koirala starts at 5.30am and ends at 11pm. She is usually based in Maiti’s centre in Kathmandu, which is home to about 500 rescued girls.
In fact, Koirala prefers to be at home with her girls rather than attending meetings and talking abroad, which she believes do not achieve much.
“The time I spend back home is more fruitful,” she adds. An English teacher for 20 years, Koirala began her crusade after reading about trafficking in the papers in the 1990s. She also used to see many women begging around the temples.
“They were victims of domestic violence and polygamy. I was asking myself where are these women’s rights,” she relates.
Motherly figure: Koirala prefers to be at home with her girls rather than attending meetings or talking abroad. She left her job and together with a group of friends, formed Maiti in 1993 to combat domestic violence, girl trafficking, child prostitution, child labour and various forms of female exploitation.
Today the organisation runs three prevention homes, 10 transit homes, two rehabilitation homes and a hospice.
Maiti’s programmes have helped sexually abused girls, abandoned children, potential victims of trafficking, destitute women, prisoner’s children, returnees from Indian brothels as well as girls and children infected with HIV and Hepatitis B. The toughest part of Koirala’s job is reintegrating the girls into society in view of the social stigma. The best way to do this is to empower them economically, she says.
At the homes, they are taught skills such as sewing, hairdressing and baking. They are also given job placements or help to start their own business.
Maiti also seeks justic for victims by initiating criminal investigation and waging legal battles against the criminals.
Koirala herself was a victim of domestic violence as her husband was an alcoholic who used to beat and scold her. But back then, she kept things to herself and never told anyone because of family honour.
“I always tell the girls that in my time, I had nobody. But now they have me,” she says.
Because of her brazeness, she often receives death threats, but is undaunted.
Once, she received a phone call from a Nepali prisoner who said that he had sent someone with a gun. He also threatened to kill her only son who has followed in her footsteps.
Koirala, however, remained unfazed by the threat.
“You will never work if you always feel scared,” she asserts.
And there is a reason why traffickers call her Terminator. A total of 688 offenders have been sentenced to jail so far through the joint effort of Maiti and the police. Bishwo Kadhka, the CEO of Maiti, says Koirala inspired him to join the organisation 16 years ago.
“Even criminals have respect for what she does. These people bow their heads to Koirala even though she might be their enemy. They know what she is fighting for,” he says.
Koirala gets inspiration from her grandfather, mother and Mother Theresa.
Because her father was an army colonel stationed in India, Koirala studied in a convent school in West Bengal.
She used to follow her mother to Mother Theresa’s shelter when she was eight years old.
“I met her just before she died (in Sept 1997) and she told me to keep on with my work,” says Koirala who defines religion as serving people.
So does she ever feel tired after pushing for so much but still seeing the same crimes happening?
“I’m not tired at all.”
