Man dies after saving ex-girlfriend

GEORGE TOWN: A wireman persuaded his former girlfriend not to jump from the eighth floor of an apartment block but fell to his death shortly after.

Fong Wei Shen, 22, was said to have been in a heated argument with his former girlfriend, who is believed to be in her 20s, at the apartment in Bandar Baru Air Itam.

A neighbour known only as Lim, 45, said he heard a commotion at about 6am yesterday.

Lim, who stays on the seventh floor, had gone upstairs to take a look. He said he saw a woman rushing out from the unit and threatening to jump.

“One of her legs was over the concrete barrier but Fong managed to hug her and bring her to safety.

“Shortly after pulling the woman into the unit, the victim suddenly came out and jumped,” he claimed.

Fong’s body was found in a pool of blood at an open space of the apartment. The unit belongs to his aunt.

His father Fong Kum Wai, 57, said he was shocked that his son had taken his own life as he had behaved normally before the incident.

He said Fong had broken up with his girlfriend about two weeks ago after dating her for more than a year.

“He was his usual self a day before and told me he was okay despite the break-up, as both he and his girlfriend were constantly in touch over the phone.

“He did not show any signs of depression. There was nothing on his Facebook,” he said.

Kum Wai, a manager of an engineering firm, said he would not blame his son’s former girlfriend over the incident.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the case had been classified as sudden death.

He said they were investigating whether there was any foul play

How to Calculate a Dog's Age in Dog Years

A popular misconception is that dogs age 7 years for each calendar year. In fact, canine aging is much more rapid during the first 2 years of a dog's life. After the first 2 years the ratio settles down to 5 to 1 for small and medium breeds. For large breeds the rate is 6 to 1, and for giant breeds the rate is 7 to 1. Thus, at 10 years of age a Great Dane would be 80 years old while a pug would only be 64.

How to Tell a Dog's Age

If you've taken in a dog whose age is unknown, there are some ways to determine his age. Here are some things vets check to get a general sense of how old a dog is:

The Teeth: Dogs usually have a set of permanent teeth by their seventh month, so if you've come across a dog with clean pearly whites, he is likely a year old or thereabouts. Yellowing on a dog's back teeth may put the dog between one and two years of age, while tartar build-up at a minimal level could mean you have a dog between 3 and 5. Missing teeth or severe wear usually means the dog is a senior and could use some special dental care.

Muscle Tone: Younger dogs are more likely to have some muscle definition from their higher activity level. Older dogs are usually either a tad bonier or a little fatter from decreased activity.

The Coat: A younger dog usually has a soft, fine coat, whereas an older dog tends to have thicker, coarser (and sometimes oilier) fur. A senior dog may display grays or patches of white, particularly around the snout.

The Eyes: Bright, clear eyes without tearing or discharge are common in younger dogs. Cloudy or opaque eyes may mean an older dog.

Old Age in Dogs

The age at which a dog can be considered elderly varies widely among models. In general, the larger the dog, the more quickly it declines. For instance, a Great Dane could be considered "senior" at age 5, while a smaller toy poodle would still be spry at twice that age. Remember, however, that just because a dog is chronologically old doesn't mean that an endless series of malfunctions is in store. In many cases an elderly dog can enjoy many healthy, active, pain-free years.

One of the best ways to prolong the life and improve the functions of an elderly dog is to carefully regulate its fuel intake. Older dogs exercise less and thus need fewer calories. And since age reduces their ability to digest and absorb nutrients, high-quality food specifically formulated for their needs is a necessity. Excessive amounts of protein, phosphorus, and sodium can aggravate kidney and heart problems, so most such foods contain smaller amounts of higher-quality protein, along with reduced quantities of other elements. Levels of vitamins, zinc, fatty acids, and fiber, however, are increased.

Dominic Cooper in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter


Dominic Cooper is in final negotiations for a leading role in 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter'.

The British actor has replaced Joaquin Phoenix in the role of Henry Sturgess - a friendly vampire who helps a young Abraham in a fight, leading to a life-long bond between the pair.

Later he mentors an older Abraham in the techniques of fighting vampirism.

Benjamin Walker is confirmed as playing Lincoln in the Timur Bekmambetov-directed project, while 'The Hurt Locker' star Anthony Mackie is close to completing discussions to play Abraham's best friend Will.

Pre-production has already begun on the movie, which is based on the book of the same name by Seth Graham-Smith.

It is not the only one of his projects to be made into a movie - 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' is also in the works.

Dominic, 32, has a number of movies coming up including the role of Howard Stark in 'Captain America: The First Avenger', due for release later this year, and a part in 'My Week with Marilyn' about blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe.

RM123mil for a Picasso painting

A Pablo Picasso painting depicting his young lover Marie-Therese Walter has sold for £25.2mil (RM123.42mil) at a London auction.

Sotheby's said the painting was bought by an anonymous buyer over the phone after some six-minute of heated contest among bidders on Tuesday.

The 1932 painting, called La Lecture, was expected to fetch up to £18mil (RM88.17mil).

The picture's selling price Tuesday included a premium of £2.7mil (RM13.22mil).

It shows Walter, Picasso's mistress and model for several paintings, asleep in an armchair.

Walter was 17 when she met Picasso. She had a daughter – Maya - with the artist.

Teen kills stranger after row with GF

A teenager kicked a girl stranger to death because he wanted to hurt someone after a row with his girlfriend.

Ryan Backhouse downed seven cans of beer and a three-litre bottle of cider before savagely attacking Toni Rudman on an industrial estate.

A security guard raised the alarm and Backhouse, 19, was arrested nearby, covered in his 24-year-old victim’s blood.

She was alive when officers found her but died soon after from massive head, face and neck injuries.

Teenage girl dies after kiss

A teenage girl in the United Kingdom received her first...and last kiss from her boyfriend.

The Daily Mail reported that Jemma Benjamin, 18, collapsed and died minutes after her boyfriend kissed her.

Benjamin was kissed by fellow university student Daniel Ross, 21, at his home after a night out together.

But superfit hockey player Benjamin suddenly slumped onto the sofa - and died in front of Ross' eyes.

Jemma died from the rare cardiac condition SADS - Sudden Arrhythmic Death syndrome - which kills 500 people in the United Kingdom each year.

Ross, who had known Benjamin for three months, tried desperately to save her before paramedics arrived on the scene.

But nothing could have been done for Benjamin.
