KUALA LUMPUR: Pelik tapi benar.

Bi-Anne wants say in custody battle - Eleven-year-old Low Bi-Anne wants to have a say on matters concerning her custody before the Court of Appeal
Bi-Anne wants say in custody battle
PUTRAJAYA: Eleven-year-old Low Bi-Anne wants to have a say on matters concerning her custody before the Court of Appeal.
An application has been filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, seeking leave from the court to appoint social worker B. Vijayakumari G. A. Pillai, 60, as guardian ad litem to Bi-Anne.
(A guardian ad litem is a volunteer appointed by the court to protect the rights and advocate the best interests of a child involved in a court proceeding.)
The application is scheduled to be heard before a senior assistant registrar tomorrow.
Under the law, a guardian ad litem is required to be appointed for the child to enable her to get the locus standi to appear and participate in the court proceedings.
The application was filed under Rule 86 (1) and (2), Rules of the Proceedings Divorce and Matrimonial 1980 and Order 76 Rules of the High Court 1980 by lawyer Jagjit Singh on Nov 9 last year.
In the application, Jagjit said he was approached by Please Save the Child Association president B. Vijayakumari, who had read about Bi-Anne in local newspapers.
Yesterday, the Court of Appeal’s three-man panel led by Justice Low Hop Bing adjourned the hearing of the appeals to March 2 after lawyer K. Bowanes informed the court that she had received instructions from Bi-Anne’s mother Tan Siew Siew, 37, to stop acting on her behalf on the matters before the court.
Justice Low directed Tan, a restaurant manager in London, to engage a new counsel on or before the next hearing date to represent her in the six appeals.
On Sept 13, last year, the Kuala Lumpur High Court fined Bi-Anne’s father, Low Swee Siong, RM20,000 and a RM400 fine for each day of delay in handing over the girl to Tan for disobeying a court order.
Low and Tan were married in 1999 and divorced in 2006.
In 2008, Tan applied for and won custody of Bi-Anne. Low was given reasonable access.
However, Bi-Anne refused to be with her mother and insisted she wanted to live with her father.
On Jan 28 this year, Bi-Anne’s parents failed to settle her custody amicably via mediation. — Bernama

Teenager shot after attacking officers
TUMPAT: A teenager who attacked several Anti-Smuggling Unit officers in front of the district hospital here was seriously injured after he was shot twice.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the 19-year-old youth had attacked the officers because he held them responsible for the death of his uncle, a suspected smuggler.
He had come with several men in five cars and confronted the officers at 9.20am yesterday while they were having tea at a shop near the hospital.
Abdul Rahim said the drama unfolded after the officers tailed a 56-year-old man, who was driving a car at Kampung Tin here.
“The officers brought the suspect to the hospital as they found him unconscious right after they pulled him over.
“However, the suspect was pronounced dead at 7.45am after being brought to the hospital,’’ he said.
Police also found 20 packets of rice in the man’s car.
“Four of the officers who later went to have coffee at a nearby shop were attacked by a mob believed to be made up of the man’s relatives.
“In the scuffle, the teenager was shot twice by one of the officers after he refused to stop attacking them,” Abdul Rahim said.
He also said that the teenager was transferred to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baru from the district hospital here and his condition is reported to be stable.
Abdul Rahim added that the case was being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, Section 37 of the Firearms Act and Section 427 of the Penal Code.

Two NS trainees die of illnesses, another still in coma
KUALA LUMPUR: Two National Service trainees died in the past four days of different causes and at separate hospitals.
Mohamad Zulhaili Noraihan, 17, died of meningoencephalitis (bacterial infection of the brain) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Tuesday. The Kuala Lumpur boy had reported for training at the Wawasan Papar camp in Sabah on Jan 2.
A medical form prior to his entry to the camp had stated that he was being treated for nephrotic syndrome and that he suffered from gastric and kidney problems and had previously suffered from head injuries.
“He was treated initially at a clinic at the camp on Jan 24 for a pain in the ear and also on Feb 10 for fever and headache,” said NS Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil last night.
He said the boy was then referred to Papar district hospital when his headache did not ease off, adding that he was subsequently sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Apparently, he had developed fever after swimming with friends in a pond at the camp.
In another case, Fatini Aqilah Fadhil died of neutropenic sepsis (leukaemia) at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh last Sunday.
Fatini, 17, was based at the Chenderiang camp in Tapah starting Jan 2.
“She was given a Chinese New Year break like other trainees from Feb 2 to Feb 6,” Abdul Hadi said.
However, the girl was admitted to the intensive care unit at Taiping Hospital on Feb 7.
At the PDS Resort camp in Port Dickson, where NS trainee A. Tamilarasi fell into a coma due to high fever, spokesman Mej Mohd Rafee Zain said the authorities did not refer her to the hospital as her condition had not been serious.
“She was still able to attend all the programmes. Our medical staff examined her thoroughly to ensure she was able to undergo training,” he said, adding that the camp authorities were not negligent in not referring her to a government clinic or hospital.
“We always have medical officers who examine trainees showing signs of being ill. When she was here, her condition was not serious enough to warrant her being sent for treatment outside the camp,” he said.
Tamilarasi is fighting for her life at the Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital intensive care unit where she has been warded since Feb 8.
Mej Mohd Rafee said that when Tamilarasi did not return to the camp after the five-day break on Feb 7, the camp authorities called her father who said a private clinic had given her seven days’ medical leave. She slipped into a coma the next day.
Yesterday, Tamilarasi’s father K. Anandan, 39, said doctors had told him that the girl might require dialysis and minor surgeries.
“They (doctors) are almost certain that she must have contracted an illness during training,” he said.

Andy sends Sammi 999 roses
Andy sends Sammi 999 roses
How many stalks of roses does one need to patch things up with an ex? For Hong Kong singer-actor Andy Hui, it's 999 stalks.
Although it had been many years since singer Andy Hui and Cantopop diva Sammi Cheng split up, the couple has never quite untangled themselves from their past relationship.
Last year, Andy returned to being a bachelor after he was involved in a high-profile split from then-girlfriend Michelle Yu. At that time, many people expected him to patch things up with Sammi.
Although the pair has frequently denied news of a possible reunion, recent reports in Hong Kong media suggested otherwise.
According to Andy's close friend, the singer had requested the day off on Valentines' Day and ordered 999 stalks of roses during the Lunar New Year period. When asked by his friend if the flowers were for Sammi, Andy replied with a mysterious smile and neither acknowledged nor denied it.
On Feb 10, Sammi acknowledged that she had visited Andy's house during Lunar New Year when she and co-star Louis Koo attended the premiere of their latest movie.
The Cantopop diva also revealed that she had a date on Valentines' Day. When Sammi realised she had said too much, the singer quickly added that she was going for a dental check up.
When asked if she had received flowers from Andy, Sammi did not comment.

Clad in a feathery black C.D Greene gown, Hsiao was introduced to the audience by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx.
"This is Elva, she's from Taiwan. She is huge over there, sorta equivalent to Britney Spears," Foxx told the media.
Hsiao, who was reportedly on a very strict diet before the show, said she is very excited and hopes to attend the event as a nominee one day.
She met Foxx through friends last year and was invited to be part of Monday night's Grammy awards.
Foxx even introduced the Taiwanese star to some American producers and rapper Kanye West.
So fans, don't rule out the possibility of them collaborating in the future!

Daihatsu to launch budget car in SEA
Top Japanese automaker Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota, will begin manufacturing a low-priced compact car in Indonesia in 2013 for sale in South-east Asian nations.
Tapping its expertise in minicars, Daihatsu plans to develop a fuel-efficient vehicle in Indonesia and supply 70 per cent of the output to be sold under the Toyota brand, reports AFP, quoting the Nikkei business daily.
To sell for up to 900,000 yen (RM31,900) - the cheapest Toyota car in the global market, the new vehicle will be a little smaller than the Etios, a strategic small sedan that Toyota launched in India late last year, it said.
Daihatsu, which already has a factory in Jakarta capable of assembling 280,000 vehicles a year, plans to spend 20 billion yen to build a new plant, which will have an initial annual capacity of 100,000 units, the paper said.
Toyota and Daihatsu are the first and second best-selling automakers in Indonesia, controlling 53 per cent of the market between them.

Masaharu Fukuyama lends voice to Doraemon - Masaharu Fukuyama voices Fukuyama Masaaki, a role close to himself, in Doraemon
Masaharu Fukuyama lends voice to Doraemon
Be ready to get an earful of Japanese heartthrob Masaharu Fukuyama in an upcoming Doraemon animation.
The multi-talented singer-actor is set to make his voice-acting debut in Doraemon: Nobita and the New Steel Troops: ~Angel Wings~, a new animation film based on the well-loved robotic cat.
The 42-year-old boyish-looking star is voicing Fukuyama Masaaki, the idol of the show’s staple character Shizuka Minamoto.
The role, first appearing in an episode back in last Sept, was based on the popular singer.
Fukuyama could barely hide his excitement over landing a voicing gig in the film.
“I feel like showing off to everyone,” he gushed, adding that he channelled a lot of effort into his role.
“It’s a pity that I had so little screentime in the film. I thought my role would have more scenes with Shizuka.”
So which is his favourite Doraemon gadget?
“I would love to take the time machine and travel back to the Bakumatsu period and meet (movement leader) Sakamoto Ryōma,” he joked.

84-yr-old man survives five-day desert ordeal
Henry Morello began to lose hope after being stranded in his car in the Arizona desert for five long days in which the 84-year-old drank windshield wiper fluid, used car mats to stay warm and read a car manual from cover to cover to pass the time.
Then, he heard a knock on a window from a hiker, and suddenly his long, painful ordeal was over.
"I just kissed him," Morello said of the hiker. "He looked like an angel to me."
Morello described his ordeal at a hospital news conference Tuesday as he recalled making a wrong turn while driving home Feb. 7 from a restaurant and ending up stuck in the desert. His car and cell phone battery soon went dead as rescuers looked for him.
Morello said he became stranded when - realising he made a wrong turn - made a U-turn and ended up in a ditch.
He tried to crawl out of the car but did not get too far and returned. He ripped a chrome piece from his car and put it on the roof, hoping someone would see the reflection.
Overnight temperatures the week he was missing were in the upper 30s to the mid-40s Fahrenheit (4 to 7 Celsius), the National Weather Service said.
The hikers who found him Saturday morning weren't identified at the news conference, but Jim Sheehan, a search and rescue leader, said they knew of the missing man.
"Nobody ever gave up" in the search, said Sheehan, who was on a search plane when he got a call saying Morello had been found.
Morello is a patient at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, where doctors said he arrived in good condition considering what he'd been through. A diabetic, Morello, will stay in the hospital a few days while doctors treat him for kidney damage. It wasn't immediately clear if drinking the windshield wiper fluid had done him any harm.
Dr. Kevin Veale said initial reports were that Morello had consumed some antifreeze, which would have been much worse than wiper fluid.
Morello lives on his own but a caregiver visits daily. His family is in Chicago, but friends in Arizona kept them informed about the search.
About 100 volunteers passed out fliers and searched on the ground for Morello over four days, after authorities got word that he was missing.
The efforts began Wednesday.
Morello won't be driving by himself for a long time, said Sheehan, who has been friends with Morello for 15 years.
And Morello says he's learned a lesson the hard way: "I'll never drive without water," Morello said. - AP

Digitally-enhanced' toddler - Le Yati Min was born with 12 fingers and 14 toes
Digitally-enhanced' toddler
From almost the moment Le Yati Min was born, her mother knew the girl had a little something extra.
"I asked the nurses whether my kid was born complete with hands and legs," says her mother. "They replied that the baby even has more than she needs."
Born with 12 fingers and 14 toes, Le may be the most "digitally enhanced" person in the world. Now, the 16-month-old girl's family in impoverished Myanmar is seeking a Guinness World Record to prove it.
A neighbour is helping her mother apply to claim the record hearing that a boy from India currently hold bragging rights for the most digits, with 12 fingers and 13 toes.
Polydactylism - being born with an extra finger or toe - is fairly unusual, but it is even more rare for someone to have spare functional digits on both hands and feet, as Le does.
Le lives with her family in a small wooden house on the outskirts of the Southeast Asian country's former capital of Yangon, where she runs around with seven toes on each foot.
Proud mom Phyo Min Min Soe, 26, said Tuesday that she'd be happy to see Le gain a world record, but even without that, her daughter already has a happy life, and even some natural advantages.
"She seems to have a stronger grip on things - so she doesn't drop things much," she says, as Le plays nearby with a mobile phone.
According to the Guinness World Records website, the record for most fingers and toes for a living person is currently held by two people in India, who have 12 fingers and 13 toes each.
Dr. Craig Camasta, a surgeon in Atlanta, Georgia, said many parents of babies with polydactylism choose to have an operation to get rid of the extra fingers or toes to avoid social stigma, but that "It's not necessary that the extra digits be removed." - AP

Grandma has sex with pet dog
A British gran who was photographed having sex with her family's dog has been convicted of bestiality.
Paula Mangan, 42, was snapped by boyfriend Lee McCall, 41, with the rottweiler-chow cross.
Police found a CD of 33 vile images in a raid on their Liverpool home after McCall was suspected of arson and voyeurism. Officers also uncovered 61 indecent images of children.
Mangan, who has two teenage daughters and one grandchild, admitted sex with the animal at Liverpool Crown Court.
Judge Robert Warnock called her a "troubled and damaged individual" and imposed a two-year community order with supervision. McCall admitted making indecent images and faces sentence in April. The pair hid their faces as they fled court.
A neighbour said they still own the dog, adding: "It's disgusting. They seemed a normal family." - www.thesun.co.uk

Powerful solar flare detected - Solar flares appear to be caused by a sudden release of magnetic energy and emit light, ultraviolet waves and X-rays
The most powerful solar flare in years has erupted.
This scenario sent a blast of X-rays from a hotspot of activity that may still belch solar storms in the days to come.
The sun unleashed the flare at about 1.44am (Greenwich Mean Time) on Tuesday.
Since then the spot has grown to more than 100,000km across - nearly eight times the width of the Earth.

Solar flares appear to be caused by a sudden release of magnetic energy and emit light, ultraviolet waves and X-rays.
There is often a disruption of radio communications shortly after major flares.
When those electrified particles reach the Earth, they can create a geomagnetic storm that could influence the planet in several ways, including disrupting satellite communications and power grids.
Ideally, the associated stream of particles would reach the Earth 37 hours after the eruption, said Bao Xingming of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
"We expect some impact from the eruption, such as communication disruptions, in the coming 24 hours," he said.
"But there is no need to panic," the solar physic explained that the eruption was very strong but not that big.
Bao said the eruption showed that the sun has entered an active period of its 11-year solar weather cycle after a lull in activity.
"More such eruptions, even more intense - either from the same solar hotspot or from others - are expected in the coming year or two," Bao said.
