Azra Akin, winner of ‘Dancing with the Stars’

Bulgarian Nikolay Manolov and former Miss World Azra Akin have won the first season of Dancing with The Stars in Turkey.

The Bulgarian, a professional Latin dancer, and his celebrity partner have been judged the maximum amount of points at the show’s finale, the Bulgarian dir.bg online agency reports. Thirteen other couples participated in the competition.

Azra Akin is a popular Turkish model and actress, crowned Miss World in 2002.

The Turkish version of the popular show started on October 30 2010 and was broadcast by the Turkish “Show TV” channel under the name ” Yok Boyle Dans “. Another professional Bulgarian dancer, Pavlina Valcheva, also took part in the show.

Mayat mangsa ditemui terikat di dalam bilik tidur

KUALA LUMPUR: Pegawai promosi sebuah stesen televisyen swasta ditemui mati dipercayai lemas akibat ditekup dengan bantal di rumah sewanya di sebuah flet di Jalan Api, Sri Sentosa, Jalan Klang Lama di sini, lewat malam kelmarin.

Mayat mangsa ditemui jam 12 tengah malam dalam keadaan hanya memakai seluar dalam dan tertiarap di bilik tidurnya, manakala tangan, kaki dan lehernya diikat dengan wayar telefon. Ketua Polis Daerah Brickfields, Asisten Komisioner Wan Abdul Bari Khalid, berkata rakan mangsa yang pulang selepas kerja jam 12 tengah malam terkejut apabila pintu jeriji rumah dan televisyen terbuka, namun tiada sesiapa yang menontonnya.

Wan Abdul Bari bagaimanapun mengesahkan tiada kesan pecah masuk ke dalam rumah dan tidak menolak kemungkinan mangsa dibunuh oleh orang dikenalinya berdasarkan keadaan rumah itu.

Katanya, pasukan polis yang bergegas ke lokasi kejadian sejurus selepas dimaklumkan oleh rakan serumah mangsa mendapati mangsa mati akibat lemas selepas mukanya ditekup dengan bantal.

“Kita juga percaya terdapat lebih daripada seorang suspek yang melakukan pembunuhan itu berdasarkan pada keadaan mangsa yang ditemui diikat, agak sukar untuk seorang melakukannya,” katanya.
Sehingga kini siasatan lanjut sedang dijalankan bagi mengenal pasti motif pembunuhan.

Selain itu, polis juga sedang meneliti satu laporan polis yang pernah dibuat mangsa bulan lalu kerana diugut supaya mengahwini seorang wanita.

Wan Abdul Bari berkata, kes itu disiasat mengikut Seksyen 302 Kanun Keseksaan iaitu bunuh.

STPM results out on Monday

PETALING JAYA: The results for the 2010 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) will be announced on Monday.

The Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) said in a statement yesterday that candidates could obtain their results at their respective schools from noon that day, while private candidates would get their’s by post.

Candidates can also check their results through short messaging service (SMS) by typing STPM (space) followed by their identity card number and sending to 36363. Another alternative number is 15888.

They can also check their results on the MEC website at www.mpm.edu.my from noon on Monday.

A total of 53,674 candidates sat for the STPM last year.

Toll at PJS2 plaza reduced to RM1

PETALING JAYA: The toll rate at the Petaling Jaya Selatan 2 (PJS2) toll plaza along the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) near Kampung Medan here will be lowered from RM1.60 to RM1 effective today.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who announced this, said the reduction was a Chinese New Year gift to the residents in the area.

“This is another example of how we will do the best for the people of Selangor and Malaysia,” he said to applause from about 2,500 people at the Chap Goh Mei festival gathering organised by Selangor Barisan Nasional at Padang Taman Datuk Hormat PJS 10 yesterday.

The toll fee change takes effect from 12.01am today.

The RM1.2bil NPE, stretching 19.5km and opened on April 30, 2004, is managed by the concessionaire New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd.

This is the third toll rate cut Najib has announced since he tabled Budget 2011 last year.

On Jan 28, Najib announced there would be no toll increase for the next five years for the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway and East Coast Expressway Phase One.

He said the toll for the Salak to Taman Connaught stretch of the East-West Link Expressway would be abolished by May.

In the 2011 Budget tabled in October last year, Najib announced a five-year freeze on toll rates on four highways owned by Plus Expressway.

At the event yesterday, Najib handed 650 envelopes of RM200 cash each to the disabled, single mothers and senior citizens.

He said RM1.2bil had been given to the needy in the country but some people were not appreciative.

“The Opposition gave RM100 a year to each person (senior citizen) and there was much applause but we give more than the Opposition.

“This is because we run the country efficiently, we do not fight unnecessarily, we don’t leave the party, we don’t have special state assembly sittings which we know would not benefit the people,” he said.

A MAN failed to turn up for his wedding in Sungai Siput, Perak, leaving the bride waiting in vain at the marriage dais.

Relatives and friends who were invited to the wedding at a temple last Sunday were saddened to see the dejected bride waiting for the man to appear, Tamil Nesan said.

However, all was not lost.

The parents of the bride, upon realising that the marriage of their eldest daughter was not going to proceed decided to do something.

So they conducted the marriage of their second daughter with her boyfriend who was present at the ceremony.

Chap Goh Meh singles party

GEORGE TOWN: Thousands took part in joyous Chap Goh Meh celebrations in several states, with the orange-throwing tradition being the highlight of the night.

The event which marked the end of the 15-day Chinese New Year celebration, saw maidens, including foreign tourists, throwing oranges into the sea with the hope of getting good life partners.

At the Esplanade here, single women wrote their names and telephone numbers on the oranges, while some even scribbled their Facebook addresses on the fruits.

Julie Olson, 22, from the United States who threw two oranges, said it was a fun way to find a suitor.

“I don’t have a boyfriend, so why not give it a try? I’ll never know who may call or chat with me on Facebook,” she added.

Two of her friends Stephanie Loo, 23, and Kathy Houng, 22, from the United States, threw three oranges each with witty messages, date of birth and heart symbols drawn on them.

Houng said she put down her passport number on the oranges “to be different from the others.”

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who attended the event, threw tangerine oranges into two waste paper baskets that were placed on a buoy.

The event culminated with a 10-minute fireworks display sponsored by the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce at about 10.30pm.

Some 1,500 oranges were thrown into the sea during a similar celebration at Straits Quay in Tanjung Tokong.

Even children and men threw oranges, wishing for good fortune, health and success.

In Ipoh, thousands thronged the Kuan Yin Tong temple to pray for a good year.

Many youths also took to fastening padlocks and hurling oranges onto the branches of a “wishing tree” in the hope of finding true love.

Sales promoter Candy Tan, 25, said she hoped to find a boyfriend this year.

“All my friends have managed to find partners, so I think it’s about time I have one too,” she added.

Temple secretary Ho You Meng said 500 people took part in this year’s event.

In Shah Alam, hundreds who converged at i-City waited until midnight to witness a display of fireworks, while single men and women threw oranges into a man-made river nearby.

Tan Siew Lin, 25, said it was exciting for her to participate in the festival although she didn’t believe that she would find her Mr Right by throwing oranges.

World's 1st robot marathon

A technology company is organising the world's first marathon for robots in Japan, a country known for its love of gizmos.

So far, five robots have entered the event, expected to last four days next week.

Organiser Vstone Co said it will demonstrate the machines' durability and manoeuvrability.

The "Robo Mara Full" race begins on February 24 and is open only to androids with two legs.

The robots must complete 422 laps around a 100-metre indoor racetrack to cover 42 kilometres.

Survivors of the nonstop race - except for battery changes and repairs - are expected to hit the finish line on February 27, when their human counterparts run in the popular Tokyo marathon.

Jessica Alba pregnant with second child

Jessica Alba is pregnant.

The Machette actress announced she and husband Cash Warren were "thrilled" to be expecting their second child, who would be a younger brother or sister to two-year-old daughter Honor.

Writing on Facebook, the 29-year-old beauty said: "It's been a while since I've been on FB & I thought I'd drop by to let you all in on some exciting news.Honor is going to be a Big Sister!

"Cash and I are thrilled and wanted to share the news directly with you so you didn't hear about it somewhere else. I appreciated all of the love and support you all gave me during my first pregnancy and will definitely appreciate it again this time around. Have a great day!(sic)"

Jessica - who married Cash in May 2008 - recently revealed becoming a mother had made her a "little more wild."

She said: "Oddly, I think I'm a little more wild and free since I had Honor because once she's in bed all my mum friends come over and we have dance parties at my house.

"It's really dorky and I probably wouldn't have done that before. But no, I don't go out. I hang out with my friends and I'm pretty chilled."

3 women die in 'honour killings'

Three women were killed by their relatives in separate "honour killing" sprees in a state in India within a week.

In the most recent incident, 19-year-old Malti was axed to death by her grandfather in the state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.

She was killed for having an affair with a man of another caste.

On Monday, 18-year-old Meena Devi was shot dead by her elder brother, The Times of India reported.

Police said the teenager had gone missing since Feb 10, and her family suspected that she ran away with her lover.

Meera returned home later and was reprimanded by the brother.

When she failed to come out with a satisfactory reason for running away, the brother pulled out a pistol and shot her.

Honour killings are common in northern India, with at least 1, 000 people killed each year for love affairs without approval of their families, Xinhua reported.

Last week, 24-year-old Muslim girl, Fauzia, was allegedly killed by her parents after they discovered that she was having an affair with a Hindu.

When Sonu learnt of her death, he was devastated and a day later, shot himself dead in the middle of a busy market.

The condition - Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGP) - was diagnosed just weeks before her first birthday.

Lively Ashanti has the mind of a typical primary school pupil.

She loves playing with her friends in the playground.

But she weighs just 1st 13lb and is dwarfed by her five-year-old sister Brandilouise.

And the disease has ravaged her limbs and joints so she finds walking long distances extremely painful.

Girl's face slashed 41 times ...for kicks

Thugs in the United Kingdom slashed a schoolgirl's face 41 times with a scalpel... for kicks, reported The Sun.

Rebecca Wills, 16, was walking her dog when the thugs launched the unprovoked attack.

One of the gang grabbed her and warned: "If you scream I'll stab the dog."

Another pinned her arms back before the third rapidly cut her with a double-edged blade, leaving her with multiple gashes across both cheeks, her nose and forehead.

Rebecca said she "closed her eyes and just shut down" as the savage assault happened.

Lelaki patah tulang terjun hotel elak dirompak

KUALA LUMPUR: Panik akibat takut dibelasah dan dirompak, seorang lelaki bertindak nekad terjun dari tingkap sebuah hotel menyebabkan dia patah tulang belakang dan tangan sejurus terhempas ke atas jalan.

Sumber polis berkata, kejadian terbabit disedari beberapa anggota polis yang membuat rondaan cegah jenayah selepas dimaklumkan seorang lelaki warga Myanmar berhubung penemuan seorang lelaki berusia 30-an terbaring berlumuran darah berhampiran Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang, di sini.

Dalam kejadian kira-kira jam 3.30 pagi semalam, anggota polis itu pergi ke lokasi kejadian sebelum menemui seorang lelaki terbaring tidak sedarkan diri dipercayai terjatuh dari tingkat atas hotel berhampiran.

Mangsa yang terjatuh dari tingkat dua hotel itu dihantar ke Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) untuk menerima rawatan kecemasan dengan menaiki ambulans.

Hasil siasatan mendapati suspek bukan cuba membunuh diri atau terjatuh dari tingkat dua hotel itu sebaliknya menyelamatkan diri daripada dirompak.


“Berdasarkan keterangan mangsa, dia mendakwa datang ke sebuah bilik hotel di lokasi kejadian kira-kira jam 3 pagi selepas dipelawa seorang lelaki.

“Mangsa mendakwa minum dan berbual dengan tiga lelaki yang baru dikenali di dalam bilik hotel berkenaan. Bagaimanapun, mangsa mendakwa tiba-tiba dipukul dari belakang oleh seorang daripada suspek sebelum cincin dan rantai emas dipakai dirampas,” katanya.
