Cinta Akim & Stacy

Guillermo plans 3D Pinocchio film
Get ready for Pinocchio – in 3D.

Guillermo del Toro, who brought us dark but delightful fantasy fares like Pan’s Labyrinth, is working with The Jim Henson Company to come up with a 3D stop-motion film on the Carlo Collodi classic.

This is not the only Pinocchio film in the works, as Warner Bros., along with Dan Jinks and Bryan Fuller, expressed their interest in taking "a fresh approach that’s going to be very entertaining" on the well-known tale last year.

For del Toro’s version, it will be produced by the director, while Mark Gustafson, who served as animation director on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox, will co-direct the film with Gris Grimly, using the latter’s 2002 illustrated book on the classic - which captivated both adults and children - as a general guide.

With del Toro’s and Grimly’s involvement in mind, one can expect this to be dark and intriguing compared to the previous portrayals on the beloved character.

This was confirmed by del Toro.

"There has to be darkness in any fairy tale or children’s narrative work, something the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson and Walt Disney understood."

"We tend to call something Disney-fied, but a lot of people forget how powerfully disturbing the best animated Disney movies are, including those kids being turned into donkeys in Pinocchio.

"What we’re trying to do is present a Pinocchio that is more faithful to the take that (Collodi) wrote. That is more surreal and slightly darker than what we’ve seen before,” he explained.

Man survives with knife in head for 4 yrs

A 37-year-old man is recovering at the People's Hospital of Yuxi, Yunnan Province in China, after a surgery last Saturday to remove a blade that had been stuck in his head for four years.

The strange discovery shocked doctors of Yuanjiang County Hospital, as well as patient Li Fu's family members, after an X-ray examination on January 24.

Li had apparently gone to the hospital for examination after being puzzled by his continous bad breath and splitting headaches.

"A miracle of miracles: A knife pierced his skull and stayed in the nerve and vascular intensive area," said neurosurgeon Luo Zhiwei of the People's Hospital.

The blade entered through his right lower jaw, went past his tongue, nasopharynx and muscles with the tip almost touching his brain.

Doctors carried out a four-hour operation from 8.30am to take out the 10-cm long, 1.8-cm wide and 0.24-cm thick blade.

And the cause? Li Fu's younger brother remembered a robbery case four years ago, when Li was stabbed in his right lower jaw.

At the local hospital, doctors sutured his wound and injected anti-inflammatory needles. Police later caught the robber but found only a shank
without a blade.

"The wound healed well, so he did not accept further examinations. We never thought the blade was left in his head."

Dead rat found floating in cooking oil - EIGHT food premises in Klang were ordered to close after they failed to meet hygiene standards

Dead rat found floating in cooking oil

EIGHT food premises in Klang were ordered to close after they failed to meet hygiene standards.

One even had a dead rat in its frying pan.

Sinar Harian reported that the carcass was seen floating in a pan of used cooking oil, discovered in the kitchen of an outlet near Jalan Tengku Kelana.

Health officers also found cockroaches and animal droppings in the eight food premises that were investigated under Operasi Bersepadu Bersih 3 on Thursday.

“A check on the first outlet found that food containers were placed on the floor.

“Many cockroaches were also seen,” said Klang Municipal Council Health Department acting deputy director Amran Jali.

He said that the premises had been ordered to close immediately after the checks.

Owners of the premises were given two weeks to clean their food outlets.

“We will return in a few days to check on these outlets.

“They will only be allowed to resume operations if they abide by directives,” Amran said.

The daily also reported that 23 students from a school in Shah Alam were rushed to the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah after they complained of stomach-ache and diarrhoea on Thursday.

The students were believed to have bought and ate food sold at the school canteen during recess.

The students were given outpatient treatment after being diagnosed with food poisoning.

They were allowed to return home after receiving treatment.

Selangor Education Department assistant director Rohaya Hussin said the school canteen had stopped operations temporarily, pending instructions from the state Health Department.

“The canteen will open again when the department gives the green light,” Rohaya said.

Year Three pupil Mohd Arif Najmi received five stitches to his forehead when a piece of his school’s roof flew off and hit him during a storm

Dislodged roof hits pupil during storm

PETALING JAYA: Year Three pupil Mohd Arif Najmi received five stitches to his forehead when a piece of his school’s roof flew off and hit him during a storm on Thursday.

The student of SK Methodist on Jalan 5/37 here was waiting for the bus after school when rain and strong winds caused five trees to be uprooted and some parts of the school roof to fly off.

His father Mohd Nasran Abd Halim said he received a call from a teacher saying that his son was injured and would be sent to the hospital.

“He is feeling better now and resting at home,” said Nasran.

Pupils of the school were given the day off yesterday but teachers were seen cleaning the mess caused by the storm.

Two goal posts were also flung across the school field due to the strong winds.

A security guard at the school said the storm which began at about 6pm only lasted for half an hour but caused massive damage.

“Luckily it happened when school was already over and pupils were leaving,” he said.

Tenor’s death silences local music industry

KUALA LUMPUR: He, perhaps, needs no introduction in the music circle, at home or abroad.

Tenor Armando Chin Yong had won several international awards in the 1980s but most of his performances in the past one decade were at private functions, charity shows and church events.

He last performed at a church concert on Jan 15. Chin, 52, died of a massive heart attack on Feb 2 – Chinese New Year’s eve – after walking his dog in his neighbourhood in Cheras.

He left behind wife Zhu Shu Wan, 50, and 12-year-old son Chin Yi.

Toh Puan Ena Ling, wife of former MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, roped Chin into her Caring and Sharing Choir after she saw Chin performing at a play – Marriage of Figaro – at the Petaling Jaya Civic Hall in 1999.

“His voice and expression were so good. He was a good man and a staunch Christian,” she recalled at Chin’s wake.

Fellow choir member, tenor Lim Cheng Hock, said he first saw Chin performing with an orchestra in Taiwan in the 1980s.

He said the Chinese-educated Chin, who grew up in Bahau, Negri Sembilan, sang in Chinese, Italian and German.

Chin graduated from the Malaysia Institute of Arts here in 1983 and spent several years studying and performing in Italy, Austria and Germany.

Lim described Chin’s passing as a great loss to the music circle.

A concert will be held at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here on Feb 25 in his memory and also to raise funds for Chin Yi’s education.

The Caring and Sharing Choir will sing two of Chin’s favourite songs, Man Jiang Hung (The River is Red) and Amazing Grace.

The concert will also feature the Yin Qi Music Centre, Ren Jing Choir, Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, Angela Cheok, Chow Kam Leong, Lim Cheng Hock and David Ngim.
