Whales die in mass stranding
The pod of beached whales at Stewart Island
More than 100 pilot whales died in a mass stranding at a remote New Zealand beach, conservation officials said Monday.
Hikers reported finding 107 whales beached on Stewart Island, off the South Island's southwest coast on Sunday.
According to the Department of Conservation's (DoC) spokesman many of the whales were already dead when rangers arrived.
A decision was made to euthanise the remaining 48 whales as there was no prospect of refloating them.
"We were quickly aware that it would be at least 10 to 12 hours before we could attempt to refloat them and that given the hot, dry conditions many more would soon perish," he said.
The spokesman said a storm was also bearing down on the beach near Mason Bay where the whales were stranded, making it too dangerous to try to get them back into the sea.
"We were worried we would be endangering the lives of staff and volunteers," he said.
Pilot whales up to six metres are the most common species of whales seen in New Zealand waters.
Mass strandings are common on the country's rugged coast.
Earlier this month, 14 died after beaching near the South Island tourist city of Nelson and 24 perished last month near Cape Reinga in the country's far north.
Scientists are unsure why pilot whales beach themselves, although they speculate it may occur when their sonar becomes scrambled in shallow water or when a sick member of the pod heads for shore and others follow.

Shot dead - for eating popcorn too loudly
A man was shot dead in a cinema in Latvia, after eating his popcorn too loudly during a screen of Black Swan.
The shooting occurred on Saturday evening in the central multiplex cinema in the Latvian capital, Riga as the credits rolled during a screen of the Oscar-nominated film "Black Swan".
The movie is a psychological thriller about a ballet dancer who loses her mind succumbing to pressure to perform.
Latvia's police spokeswoman Sigita Pildava said the 42-year old victim died shortly after the shooting.
She said police arrested the the suspected shooter, a 27-year-old man, believed to be a graduate of the Latvian police academy.
Witnesses told Latvian news agency Leta that the shooting was triggered over how loudly the deceased man, who was accompanied by his daughter, was eating his popcorn.
One eyewitness was quoted as saying that the victim had been disturbing other viewers all the time by rustling his pack of popcorn and crunching loudly.
Gun-crime is relatively rare in Latvia, a European Union nation of 2.2 million.

Man with world's biggest family

The head of the family and leader of the "Chana" religious sect - which allows polygamy - is 66-year-old Ziona Chana who lives with his family in a 100-room, four-storey house named Chhuanthar Run (House of the New Generation).
Though all of Ziona's family members live in different rooms in the building, they all share the kitchen where they cook for the entire family.
Ziona Channa posing with his 39 wives
The family is organised with almost military discipline, with the oldest wife Zathiangi organising her fellow partners to perform household chores such as cleaning, washing and preparing meals.
An evening meal can see them pluck 30 chickens, peel 59.8kg of potatoes and boil up to 99.7kg of rice.
Ziona even married ten women in one year, when he was at his most prolific, and enjoys his own double bed while his wives have to do with communal dormitories.
He keeps the youngest women near to his bedroom with the older members of the family sleeping further away and there is a rotation system for who visits Ziona’s bedroom.
Under one roof...Ziona Channa's family mansion
He said he felt blessed to have so many of his brood living with him. "Today I feel like God's special child. He's given me so many people to look after."
"I consider myself a lucky man to be the husband of 39 women and head of the largest family."
All the men of the family work as carpenters and Ziona says proudly: "We don't want any help from the government."
Rinkmini, one of Ziona’s wives, said, "We stay around him as he is the most important person in the house. He is the most handsome person in the village."
Meet the family....Ziona with his 39 wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren
She said Ziona noticed her on a morning walk in the village 18 years ago and wrote her a letter asking for her hand in marriage.
Another of his wives, Huntharnghanki, said the entire family gets along well. The family system is reportedly based on "mutual love and respect".
Ziona, whose sect has 4,00 members, says he has not stopped looking for new wives.
"To expand my sect, I am willing to go even to the US to marry," he said.
One of his sons insisted that Ziona, whose grandfather also had many wives, married the poor women from the village so he could look after them.

Three nabbed in connection with case of woman thrown out of vehicle
PORT DICKSON: Police recently detained three men in the vicinity of Port Dickson town in connection with the case of a woman, who was believed to have been injured after being thrown out of a vehicle at a traffic light junction in Lukut, earlier this month.
According to Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Osman Salleh, the suspects were aged between 20 and 30 and the case involved a broken promise, but did not elaborate.
"The woman, believed to be from China, was not raped, but there were indications that she had just had sex before she was flung out of the car," he told Bernama.
The victim, who had been in a coma for several days, is now able to speak and is being treated at the Seremban Hospital.
In another case, where a woman was stabbed to death by her son in Kuala Pilah last Saturday, Osman said the suspect is being held in the mental ward.
"The suspect has been treated for mental disorder in the past so his action could have been due to his failure to take his medication. A normal human being would not do such a thing," he said.
He urged the public to ensure that family members with a history of mental disorder took their medication on time to avoid untoward incidents.
In the incident, Jemelah Muhamad, 53, died after being stabbed by her 28-year-old son in their house at Felda Kepis, about 25km from Kuala Pilah. - Bernama

Australian to chronicle family’s ghostly encounter
By SYED AZHAR
newsdesk@thestar.com.my
KOTA BARU: An Australian writer intrigued by the paranormal happenings at the home of Zainab Sulaiman, which included unexplained mysterious fires, has flown down to investigate and chronicle it for an upcoming book on the matter.
Paul Cropper, 47, from Sydney arrived here on Friday to meet 75-year-old Zainab in Kampung Penambang Bunga after reading about her ordeal in The Star online.
“Zainab’s experience is similar to the work of a poltergeist or djinn as the locals call it.
“I have personally experienced such entities in Australia where things mysteriously fly. I want to compare Zainab’s experience with the paranormal activities in Australia,” Cropper said.
Poltergeist was here: Zainab showing Cropper the mattress that caught fire, when he paid her a visit yesterday. — SAZUKI EMBONG / The Star “I expect the book would be completed in six months and I will prominently highlight Zainab’s experience in my book,” said the manager with a major Australian Telecommunications company who has been writing on strange phenomena for over 20 years.
He has co-authored two books on Australian wildlife myths and legends.
More than five paranormal experts had exorcised Zainab’s house, from Chinese sifus to bomohs and she has not experienced any strange phenomena since then.
A delighted Zainab said she was happy with Paul’s visit.
“At least now people believe my story because before this many had thought that I was an insane old woman trying to get attention from the public or trying to cash in on my predicament,” she said to Paul.
She gave him a half-burnt floor mat to bring back to Australia as a momento.
Zainab, who lives in the wooden house with her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, was plagued with mysterious fires since early December last year.

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has declared a dividend of 5.8% for 2010, up from 5.65% declared the year before
PETALING JAYA: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has declared a dividend of 5.8% for 2010, up from 5.65% declared the year before.
It will pay out a total of RM21.61bil to members, an increase from the 2009 dividend payout of RM19.37bil.
EPF declared that the rate, which was approved by the Finance Minister, was the “highest dividend payout amount ever”.
EPF’s total investment assets stood at RM440.52bil as at Dec 31 last year while its gross investment income was RM24.06bil.
“The dividend rate underscores an impressive year in which gross investment income reached a historical high of RM24.06bil, reflecting a 39.76% increase over the RM17.22bil recorded in 2009,” EPF chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said in a statement yesterday.
Samsudin said last year’s investment income was especially driven by the performance of equity investments boosted by improved financial and economic conditions.
“The dividend amount paid out is derived after deducting net impairment allowance on financial assets, investment expenses, operating expenditure and statutory charges as well as dividend on withdrawals,” he said.
Equities, the statement said, was EPF’s largest investment income contributor at 45.45% or RM10.94bil, followed by loans and bonds, Malaysian Government Securities, money market instruments and property and miscellaneous income.
According to the statement, two-thirds of EPF’s total investment assets last year remained in low risk fixed-income instruments with stable streams of income.
“As a retirement fund, our primary objective is the preservation of capital while adding value to members’ retirement savings.
Members may check their EPF account statement for the crediting of the 2010 dividend via EPF Kiosks, counters or i-Akaun, from today.

Dog saves Italian girl from rape
ROME - A DOG saved a teenage Italian girl from being raped by its master as the canine began barking, eventually leading to the man's arrest, Ansa news agency said on Saturday.
The 14-year-old girl from Milan was playing with the dog and met its 40-year-old owner, a father of a six-year-old, in a park in the northern city after skipping class on September 20 last year, the agency reported.
The girl accepted an invitation for coffee but on leaving the cafe the man grabbed her neck and tried to undress her. At that moment the dog began barking distracting his owner.
The girl managed to flee after hitting him in the groin.
A medical examination confirmed the assault after she reported the incident to the police.

Siti Sarah & Shuib Sepah Nikah 26 Februari Ini!

Co-producer of Narnia films dies - Perry Moore, a co-producer of "The Chronicles of Narnia" film series and the author of an award-winning novel...

Co-producer of Narnia films dies
Perry Moore, a co-producer of "The Chronicles of Narnia" film series and the author of an award-winning novel about a gay teenager with superpowers, was found unconscious in his bathroom and died later at a hospital, police said. He was 39.
His father, Bill Moore, told The New York Daily News newspaper in Saturday editions that an initial autopsy was inconclusive. "I have no clue what happened. The examiner said he was in good condition," Bill Moore said. His father and friends said he suffered from chronic back pain.
Moore was found unconscious in the bathroom of his Manhattan home Thursday, and doctors couldn't save his life, police said. The cause of death will be determined by the city's medical examiner, but no foul play was suspected.
Moore had a varied career in television and in film, as producer, screenwriter and director. His 2007 novel, "Hero," won the Lambda Literary Award for best novel for young gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender children or adults.
Moore, who was gay, said in an interview on his website that in writing the novel, he had wanted to tell the story of his father, a Vietnam veteran, "and his son."
"Like most young people, I grew up feeling alienated and different - for very specific reasons in my case - in a place that didn't value differences," he said. "I also have this borderline-crazy belief in the power of literature to change the universe. So I'd always wanted to tell this story."
Moore was an executive producer on all three hugely successful "Narnia" films, and authored a best-selling illustrated book for the first film, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." He directed a 2008 drama with Sissy Spacek called "Lake City" and co-directed a documentary about children's book author Maurice Sendak with Hunter Hill and Spike Jonze. He scored a "Sexy Man of the Week" rating by People Magazine in 2007.
But it was his novel about a super-powered teenager that seemed to focus his passions. With "Hero," he said he hoped to create a gay superhero who was not, he said, a supporting character, victim or token. "I decided I would write the definitive coming-of-age story of the world's first gay teen superhero," he said.
It was the death of one of the first prominent gay heroes in the Marvel Comics universe, Northstar, at the hands of X-Men's Wolverine, that spurred him to finish the book. "He slaughtered the X-Men's token gay hero," Moore said. "I found this story be disturbing, to say the least."
He compiled a list of gay characters in comics to show how most were "minor characters, and victims who are tortured, maimed and killed."
Moore was born in Virginia and majored in English at the University of Virginia, according to his website. He started his career in television at MTV and VH1, then worked for "The Rosie O'Donnell Show." He later joined Walden Media, the company that produced the films based on C.S. Lewis' "Narnia" books. - AP
