NZ quake: All M’sian students in Christchurch are safe

KUALA LUMPUR: All 390 Malaysian students in Christchurch are reported to be safe Tuesday after a strong earthquake hit the New Zealand city, toppling buildings, igniting fires and causing many deaths.

"Officers from our High Commission in Wellington went to Christchurch after the earthquake struck this morning and found the students safe," said Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay.

The earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, had cut off telecommunication links and disrupted power, making contacts with the students difficult.

Kohilan told Bernama that the High Commission had been directed to monitor the situation from Christchurch.

"At this end, Wisma Putra will open an operations room which will keep in touch with our people out there," he said.

The students are studying at the Canterbury, Otago and Lincoln universities. The Malaysian High Commission in New Zealand can be contacted at +64 421 868801 or +64 4385 2439 (contact person Datuk Dr Rosli Mohammed, Director and Counsellor of Education).

Canterbury Malaysian Students Association president Poh Eng Eu told Bernama through e-mail that his house was shaken but no visible structural damage occurred.

"The situation in the city is quite bad with 65 reported casualties so far. Telephone connection is not really good, it's hard to get hold of people so we just using send text messages most of the time," said the Petaling Jaya lad.

According to him, since the news of the earthquake broke out, he had been bombarded with calls and text messages from family members and relatives from not only Malaysia but other countries as well.

Poh said he had also contacted the Malaysian Students Department liaison officer in Wellington and told them about the situation.

This disaster follows the earthquake of Sept 4 in Christchurch which was the most destructive that New Zealand had suffered in 80 years when a 7.0 magnitude tremor damaged 100,000 homes.

There were no fatalities, but buildings were reported to have been damaged and weakened, and the city centre was cordoned off for weeks for fear that some would collapse. - Bernama

New Zealand quake kills at least 65, hundreds may be trapped
By Gyles Beckford

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A strong earthquake killed at least 65 people in New Zealand's second-biggest city of Christchurch with more casualties expected as desperate rescuers picked through rubble to find people trapped in toppled buildings.

A car crushed by rubble from collapsed buildings is pictured after an earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, in this February 22, 2011 image taken from video footage. (REUTERS/TV3 via Reuters TV)

It was the second quake to hit the city in five months, and New Zealand's most deadly natural disaster for 80 years.

"We may well be witnessing New Zealand's darkest day...The death toll I have at the moment is 65 and that may rise," New Zealand Prime Minister John Key told local TV.

"It's hard to describe. What was a vibrant city a few hours ago has been brought to its knees," added Key, who had flown to Christchurch.

The 6.3 magnitude quake struck at lunchtime, when the streets and shops thronged with people and offices were still occupied.

Christchurch's mayor described the city of almost 400,000 people as a war zone.

"There will be deaths, there will be a lot of injuries, there will be a lot of heart break in this city," Mayor Bob Parker told Australian TV by phone. He later told local radio up to 200 could be trapped in buildings.

The quake is country's worst natural disaster since a 1931 quake in the North Island city of Napier which killed 256.

Christchurch Hospital saw an influx of injured residents.

"We've had a lot of people at the emergency department...a significant number, a lot of major injuries," said David Meates, the chief executive of the Canterbury Health Board.

"They are largely crushes and cuts types of injuries and chest pain as well," he said, adding some of the more seriously injured could be evacuated to other cities, where hospitals have been put on alert and prepared to accept casualties.

All army medical staff have been mobilised, while several hundred troops were helping with the rescue, officials said.

A woman trapped in one of the buildings said she was terrified and waiting for rescuers to reach her six hours after the quake.

"I thought the best place was under the desk but the ceiling collapsed on top, I can't move and I'm just terrified," office worker Anne Voss told TV3 news.

Emergency shelters had also been set up in local schools and at a race course, as night approached.

Helicopters dumped giant buckets of water to try to douse a fire in one tall office building. A crane helped rescue workers trapped in another office block.

"I was in the square right outside the cathedral -- the whole front has fallen down and there were people running from there. There were people inside as well," said John Gurr, a camera technician who was in the city centre when the quake hit.

Authorities ordered major hospitals up and down the country to make room for quake victims. There were reports of a shortage of ambulances.

"A lady grabbed hold of me to stop falling over...We just got blown apart. Colombo Street, the main street, is just a mess...There's lots of water everywhere, pouring out of the ground," Gurr said.

Emergency crews picked through the rubble, including a multi-storey office building whose floors appeared to have pancaked on top of each other.

SILT, SAND AND GRAVEL

Christchurch is built on silt, sand and gravel, with a water table beneath. In an earthquake, the water rises, mixing with the sand and turning the ground into a swamp and swallowing up sections of road and entire cars.

TV footage showed sections of road that had collapsed into a milky, sand-coloured lake right beneath the surface. One witness described the footpaths as like "walking on sand".

Unlike last year's even stronger tremor, which struck early in the morning when streets were virtually empty, people were walking or driving along streets when the shallow tremor struck, sending awnings and the entire faces of buildings crashing down.

Police said debris had rained down on two buses, crushing them, but there was no word whether anyone had been killed or injured.

The power company Orion said it expected that as much as half of Christchurch area would be without power overnight.

The quake hit at 12:51 pm (2351 GMT Monday) at a depth of only 4 km (2.5 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

TALK OF POST-QUAKE RATE CUT

The quake helped knock the New Zealand dollar down to $0.75 , about 1.8 percent off late U.S. levels, on fears the damage could dent confidence in the already fragile economy.

Westpac Bank also raised the possibility that the central bank could cut interest rates over the next few weeks to shore up confidence after the quake, while other banks pushed out their expectations for the next rate hike. ANZ now expects the central bank to be on hold until the first quarter of 2012.

Shares in Australian banks and insurers, which typically have large operations in New Zealand, fell after the quake. But credit rating agency Fitch said the tremor would not itself trigger a downgrade of New Zealand sovereign rating.

The tremor was centred about 10 km (six miles) southwest of Christchurch, which had suffered widespread damage during last September's 7.1 magnitude quake but no deaths.

James Goff, of the University of New South Wales' Natural Hazards Research Laboratory in Australia, said some buildings that survived last year's quake had been weakened and unable to withstand the second one, especially such a shallow tremor.

"A lot of the infrastructure has still not fully recovered from the last earthquake so that would have still been feeling weak and susceptible to another big earthquake," he said.

The region has been struck by thousands of aftershocks since the original quake.

New Zealand, which sits between the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates, records on average more than 14,000 earthquakes a year, of which about 20 would normally top magnitude 5.0.

Program Melodi masih mengekalkan waktu siarannya iaitu setiap hari Ahad, jam 12.30 tengahari.

Borneo Pygmy elephant Rocco suddenly sickens and dies
By MUGUNTHAN VANAR

KOTA KINABALU: An endangered Borneo Pygmy elephant, Rocco, has died in captivity at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park here.

Rocco, reportedly about 27 years old, died at 3.30am on Monday, hardly 24-hours after it showed signs of weakness that was treated with emergency intravenous and subcutaneous fluid therapy.

Sabah Wildlife Department senior veterinarian Dr Sen Nathan said Tuesday that the cause of death was due to prolonged lying in a reclined position (recumbence) that put pressure on the internal organs and triggered respiratory and circulatory failure in the Rocco’s body.

He said blood samples had been sent to the Veterinary Services Department’s Animal Disease Research Centre for bacteriological investigations to ascertain the possible cause for its sickness.

Rocco had given birth to three calves over the years in captivity - two females named Sumandak and Amoi and a male named Ganesh.

The Borneo Pygmy elephant has an estimated life span of about 60 years in the wild.

Sabah Wildlife department director Dr Laurentius Ambu said Rocco was healthy and eating well before it suddenly became weak.

Boy, 13, had knife stuck in his face

Ren Hanzhi, 13, from the city of Zhumadian in China’s Henan province, cheated death last month after accidentally stabbing himself in the face with a knife.

A X-Ray image showing the 23.3cm knife imbbeded deep in Ren's left cheek just below his eye

The x-ray image above is worth a lot more than a thousand words as it clearly reveals the knife stuck nearly 7.62cm into the boy’s face.

He was peeling an apple when he tripped and fell, jamming a nearly 23.3cm knife deep into his left cheek just below his eye.

It is a miracle that the knife missed his brain, which would have killed him instantly.

"He was walking to the sofa while peeling the apple. Suddenly he slipped down and his face hit onto the sharp knife."

"I dared not pull out the knife as my son was screaming. It was horrifying to see your child with a knife jammed into his face," his father told the media.

With blood pouring from the deep wound, the boy was rushed to the hospital, but it was unable to deal the emergency and transferred him to a larger facility.

Doctors were shocked at the severity of the injury, but were able to remove the knife.

Ren has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery within a month’s time.

Ren is one lucky boy even though that’s probably not a word he would use to describe his near death experience.

Mum gets 29yrs jail for child rape

Mum gets 29yrs jail for child rape

Hollie Beston pleaded guilty to child rape, child molestation, sexual exploitation of a minor and dealing in child pornography

Hollie Beston pleaded guilty to child rape, child molestation, sexual exploitation of a minor and dealing in child pornography

A woman in US who filmed herself and her husband raping their 4-year-old daughter and sent videos of the sexual abuse over the internet has been sentenced to 29 years to life in prison.

Hollie Beston, 32, pleading guilty in December to first-degree child rape, first-degree child molestation, sexual exploitation of a minor and dealing in child pornography.

Her estranged husband, Brian Beston, 36, had pleaded guilty to the same charges and was sentenced to a minimum of 26 years and maximum of life in prison last June.

After they each serve their prison terms, the Bestons would still be confined until state authorities decide whether they should be released.

Washington's King County Superior Court Judge Mariane Spearman sentenced Hollie on Friday, according to the county prosecutor's website.

The couple was arrested in October 2009 after the FBI found out about what they had done - from a man who is facing 42 years in prison for years of abusing a boy he was mentoring.

Richard Hockaday, reported the Bestons' alleged abuse "as part of his therapy," according to documents tendered in court.

He told investigators that he met the couple on Craigslist.

He said he had advertised himself as a single mother looking for parents in Seattle and San Diego with whom to carry out some sort of "fantasy".

He said he started talking to the couple about traveling to Seattle to have sex with the girl and soon watched Beston - who is 1.8m tall and 163.2kg - have sex with the child over a webcam.

At one point, Hockaday said he emailed the couple saying he didn't believe they were actually raping the child.

So to prove him wrong, Brian held up a sheet of paper with a current date on it to show that he was committing the rape in real time.

Hockaday said he received 40 to 50 pornographic images from the Bestons during the three months they were in contact.

Hollie was also accused of operating the camera and sending the images via a cellphone and the Internet. On her MySpace page, she described herself as "a mommy" and a "proud parent."

The child was taken into custody by Washington's State Child Protective Services.

Earth 'unrecognisable' by 2050 - "By 2050 we will not have a planet left that is recognisable if the global population continues to increase

Earth 'unrecognisable' by 2050

The earth could become "unrecognisable" by 2050, researchers have warned.

"By 2050 we will not have a planet left that is recognisable if the global population continues to increase," said Jason Clay of the World Wildlife Fund.

He made the statement at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on Sunday.

The United Nations has projected that the global population will reach seven billion this year, and climb to nine billion by 2050.

Meanwhile, as income is expected to rise over the next 40 years, people tend to consume more meat, eggs or dairy products.

This would cost more grains to produce, adding more strain to global food supplies.

Population experts has called for more funding for family planning programs to help control the growth in the number of humans, especially in developing nations.

Pelakon Azizah Mahzan bertekad meninggalkan dunia lakonan selepas kecewa dengan drama terakhirnya Spa Qistina...

Rasa Diperbodohkan, Azizah Mahzan Berhenti Berlakon

Jimmy Shanley Dan Isteri Ke Mahkamah 8 Mac 2011

Jimmy Shanley Dan Isteri Ke Mahkamah 8 Mac

Malaysian singer Penny Tai was 'cheated' of NTD$300,000 (RM31,000) by a 'friend'

Penny Tai 'cheated' of RM31,000 by a friend

Penny Tai kept her friends a little too close.

Malaysian singer Penny Tai was 'cheated' of NTD$300,000 (RM31,000) by a 'friend'.

Tai had lodged a police report in Taiwan after she discovered that the sum was withdrawn from her bank account.

Interesting, Tai did not lose her ATM card.

Later, police managed to track down where her card was last used as well as recover footage from the surveillance camera at the site.

She went on the post the footage on her Facebook, asking her fans to identify the man in the video.

Just one day later, she received a phone call from a male friend who admitted to the crime.

He had allegedly stolen the card from her bag but returned it after he withdrew the money.

The man, who claimed he needed the money, said he tried passwords that Tai often used for her online accounts.

They went to the police the next day, where he returned the money.

Although Tai was reportedly upset, she did not press any charges as he was a close friend.

Some people believe that the incident was Tai's way of gaining publicity but the singer denied the allegation on her Facebook, saying she is not releasing an album now and has no need to promote herself.

Meanwhile, police found that the 'friend' looks different from the suspect captured by the CCTV.

Police said they would continue investigating the case.

Iranian film wins big at Berlin Film Festival

An Iranian film about the troubled marriage of a middle-class couple has nabbed the top honour at the Berlin Film Festival.

Titled Nader and Simin: A Separation, it picked up the Golden Bear award at the festival. The cast of the film was also honoured in the acting department, with its male ensemble, led by Peyman Moaadi, winning the best actor award, while the best actress award went to its female ensemble, led by Leila Hatami.

The film, directed by Asghar Farhadi, looks at the gap between the middle-class and the lower-class societies, by telling a story about a separated Iranian couple that hires a lower-class caretaker for their father.

"I never would have thought that I would win this prize," said Farhadi, adding that the win provides "a very good opportunity to think of the people of my country, the country I grew up in, the country where I learned my stories - a great people".

Though he lost the best director award to Ulrich Kohler, he won the same award at the festival for his work on About Elly two years ago.

Kohler, a German director, beat Farhadi with his film Sleeping Sickness, while Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr won the Silver Bear for Best Film with The Turin Horse.

Luhrman to remake The Great Gatsby in 3D - Leonardo DiCaprio will be filling in Robert Redford's shoes in Baz Luhrmann's remake of The Great Gatsby

Luhrman to remake The Great Gatsby in 3D

Leonardo DiCaprio will be filling in Robert Redford's shoes in Baz Luhrmann's remake of The Great Gatsby.

Here comes one of the most exciting news in the 2011 Hollywood film scene.

Baz Luhrmann, responsible for blockbuster hits like Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!, is set to do a 3D remake of The Great Gatsby in Sydney, Australia.

The location is selected over the obvious choice of New York, where the original story, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is set against.

For this ambitious remake, the auteur handpicked Leonardo DiCaprio, whom he worked with in Romeo + Juliet back in 1996, as well as British darling Carey Mulligan and DiCaprio’s bestie Tobey Maguire to be part of the cast.

DiCaprio’s and Mulligan’s roles were originally portrayed by Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in the original 1974 classic.

All eyes are now on Luhrmann, whose last film Australia, starring Australian stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, tanked at the box-office.

This latest take on the classic will also mark the first live-action 3D movie to be made in New South Wales, Australia.

Shooting will commence in August, with Luhrmann and his wife Catherine Martin recreating the 1920s' New York and Long Island in the city.

Man wears 1,000 amulets to ward off ghosts

A Thai man, who is extremely afraid of ghosts, wears about 1,000 amulets daily.

The 40-year-old supervisor of an electronic appliances company in Chiangmai said the amulets weigh about 30kg.

"I have been very afraid of ghosts since I was young and have always dreamt that I'm possessed by spirits.

"I started wearing a few amulets 20 years ago and now, I have almost 1,000," he said.

The man said the amulets are worth between 10 Bath (RM1) and 200,000 Bath (RM19,866).

"I'm not so frightened anymore, but wearing the amulets has become a habit," he said, adding that he is now more worried about being robbed.

Does red meat cause cancer? - Experts are recommending lower consumption of red meat

Experts are recommending lower consumption of red meat.

Does red meat cause cancer?

The confusion about how much red meat is safe to eat has intensified as Britons were warned they should cut down to reduce the risk of cancer.

Adults will be advised to eat no more than 500g a week – the equivalent of just three rashers of bacon a day.

The new guidelines drawn up by the Department of Health will confuse millions of households over how much red meat is harmful.

Only last week a British Nutrition Foundation study claimed that the majority of adults ate "healthy amounts" of red meat and there was an "inconclusive" link to cancer. But the latest research is expected to warn that although red meat is a valuable source of iron – an essential component of our diets – eating too much can lead to heart disease and cancer.

The guidelines, compiled by the Department of Health’s scientific advisory committee on nutrition, will recommend that adults eat no more than 70g day of red or processed meat a day.

Over a week, this amounts to three sausages, one small steak, one quarter-pounder and three slices of lamb.

Research has shown that red meat significantly increases the risk of bowel cancer. It is the second most common form of cancer and affects 36,500 Britons every year.

It has also been linked to heart disease because of its high saturated fat content, type 2 diabetes and other forms of cancer including breast, lung and prostate.

Current guidelines recommend that Britons should eat 90g a day and need to consider cutting back only if they exceed 140g a day.

But the 17 scientists who have drawn up the new research believe these limits are too lenient. Figures show that a third of adults eat more than 100g a day and the researchers fear they are putting themselves at unnecessary risk.

Processed meat can also push up the dangers and research last year showed that just two slices of bacon a day or one sausage can increase the risk of heart disease by half.

But the guidelines will also warn that while some people consume too much red meat, those who eat very little may be at risk of iron deficiency.

Last week, a 77-page review by the British Nutrition Foundation claimed there was "no conclusive link" between cardiovascular disease and red meat, which contains some fatty acids that may protect the heart.

The case against red meat by Dr Martin Scurr

It is wonderful to see the Government’s scientific advisory committee on nutrition finally coming out in support of the evidence linking cancer to eating red meat.

For more than ten years, we in the medical profession have suspected that red meat is linked to colon cancer.

But this has never been proven, because it is a difficult area to research. There are many variables which might affect cancer rates.

Leafy green vegetables, salad and fruit all protect against cancer. Could it be that it is not the eating of red meat that is the problem – but that those who eat more meat consume fewer of these protective foods?

Whatever the case, it now seems clear that red meat consumption IS linked to higher cancer rates. Why is this?

Well, we know that transit time through the human gut is predictable. If you eat a diet high in protein, with lots of red meat, food will pass through you in around 24 hours. Whereas if you eat a vegetarian diet, it will be around six hours.

This means that cancer-causing substances spend far more time sitting in a meat-eater’s gut than in a vegetarian’s.

Furthermore, red meat is full of fat, which is bad for your health. We know that obesity is linked to lots of cancers.

Many of my patients are surprised to learn that even ‘healthy’ cuts of meat are very high in fat.

A lean red meat fillet steak contains 25 per cent fat – as does the meat from a lamb chop, even when the fatty edges have been trimmed.

Widening the picture, it seems red meat also plays a role in the surge in cases of breast cancer. Thirty years ago, one in 12 British women suffered breast cancer – the figure is now one in eight.

We think this correlates with the number of menstrual cycles – a woman who has never had babies is more likely to get breast cancer than a mother of six. Critically, it seems that young girls who eat a meat-heavy diet begin their periods earlier – leaving them at higher risk of breast cancer.

In Japan, girls start menstruating at 15 or 16 – as did British women in the 1940s.

Now, girls in Britain generally start menstruating at ten or 11.

I tell my patients: If you want to live a long life, eat like a hunter-gatherer.

Our ancestors evolved to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, fibre and unrefined sugars.

We have moved a long way from that diet, and that is coming home to roost now. - www.dailymail.co.uk

KUALA LUMPUR: Twins Charlotte Teong Chuin Yi and Aimee Teong Chuin Ai are delighted to be among the STPM students who scored 5As.

“I almost can’t believe it! I’m so glad that I can share this achievement with my sister, as we helped each other to prepare for the examinations,” said Charlotte.

The twins kept squealing in delight and thanking their parents and teachers for motivating them to study hard. But the pair has different plans for the future. Charlotte said she had set her mind on reading law while her older twin is opting for medicine.

Both siblings studied at the SMJK Katholik, Petaling Jaya.

Other scorers who won awards were Syivero Patrick (Rural Category - 4As and 1B+), Hazwani Ibarahim (Speech Impediment Category - 1A, 1B and 2B-), Low Hong Ping (Spastic Category - 2A and 2A-), Ahmad Syakirin Johari (Low Vision Category - 3As, 1A- and 1B-), Mohd Rifaat Hussin (Blind Category - 2As, 2A- and 1B-) and Chong Kai Zhen (Deaf Category - 1A, 1A-, 1B+, 1B and 1B-). Each of them received RM1,000 cash, a plaque and a certificate.

A persistent high fever cost Mohd Rifaat, 21, his vision and crushed his self-confidence when he was 15. His mother Rusni Ahmad said he would cry himself to sleep after he realised he had lost his vision.

Mohd Rifaat said his SMK St John classmates would read notes to him which he would put through a Brailler.

“I want to pursue an education degree so I can help other blind students succeed in life,” he said.

Syivero said his older brother had often inspired him to study hard.

“I come from a family of farmers, and I want to make my parents proud, like my brother did,” said the Arts student from SMK Kota Marudu, Sabah.

Low, 21, a former student of SMK St John, Kuala Lumpur, who came out tops in the spastics category, said he believed in studying consistently.

Low, who suffers from muscular atrophy, said his biggest challenge was to maintain his strength.

“Not having enough physical strength is always an issue, because my condition makes me tire easily,” he said.

‘Love banners’ fail to impress ex-girlfriend

BANNERS featuring a woman’s photograph and the words “Li Wei, marry me!” have been spotted on the streets of Sungai Petani in Kedah.

They were put up by a businessman who is yearning to win back his former girlfriend.

China Press found the banners hanging on lampposts from the town centre leading to several housing estates.

Apparently, the businessman from Kuala Lumpur had split up with the 21-year-woman before Valentine’s Day.

“He wanted to reconcile with her but she refused,” a source said.

A very gory end for snatch thief

A very gory end for snatch thief
By RASHITHA A. HAMID
rashitha@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a gory end for a snatch thief who died with his private parts severed in a collision at Ampang Jaya here between his getaway motorcycle and the victim’s car.

The police and passers-by found the body of the 35-year-old suspect in a drain, with his penis almost crushed and detached from his body. His pants had been ripped from his body in the accident.

His accomplice, who was riding pillion, suffered body injuries.

The incident happened soon after the 28-year-old victim was locking the gate to leave her home in Taman Mega Jaya in Ampang at around 8.30am yesterday. She had left the bag in her Toyota Vios, while the car engine was on.

A man suddenly appeared, opened the car door and snatched the bag. The woman tried to fight back but was kicked in the abdomen.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Amirruddin Jamaluddin said the woman then got into her car and gave chase before blocking them.

The two men were caught off-guard and rammed right into the victim’s car resulting in both of them being flung from the machine. The accident occurred about 200m from the woman’s house.

The snatch theft victim was not hurt in the incident.

ACP Amiruddin also said both men had valid driving licences but the motorcycle they were using was reported stolen.

Police are investigating if the suspects were involved in other criminal activities in the district.

Lizard smuggler nabbed at checkpoint
By AUSTIN CAMOENS

JOHOR BARU: A 40-year-old man’s attempt to smuggle five Tucktoo lizards (tokek) worth an estimated RM85,000 was thwarted by authorities here.

The man, an Indonesian national, was detained at the Customs and Immigration checkpoint here at the Stulang Laut Ferry terminal at about 6.30pm on Sunday.

State Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) deputy director Siti Nur Ahmad said initial investigations had found that the lizards were brought in through Batam, Indonesia and were hidden in five bottles that were stored inside a box.

Lizard in the bottle: Siti Nur showing one of the five Tucktoo lizards seized by officials at the Stulang Laut ferry terminal on Sunday.

“The suspect came into the country via a ferry on a visitor’s pass. An X-ray scanner spotted the smuggled reptiles when the man brought his luggage through the checkpoint,” she told a press conference yesterday.

She said further investigations revealed that the lizards were meant for sale here. A single lizard could be sold for as much as RM35,000 due to its supposedly medicinal properties.

“The lizards had to be seized as one needs to have permits to bring animals into the country,” Siti Nur said, adding that this was the first time someone had attempted to smuggle animals through the checkpoint here.

She said the man had since been released, and the lizards would be handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in accordance with the Wildlife Conservation Act.
