Disfigured dog put to sleep after cancerous growth

Wander, the dog that made headlines in Singapore after it was severely abused with a metal chain - leaving its face disfigured, has been put down.

The female mongrel's condition had deteriorated drastically due to a "cancer growth which is derived from the inflammation of her injuries" according to Lyn Loh, a volunteer at Mdm Wong's Shelter.

Wander hasn't been eating and was down to her skin and bones. The growth on her face was so aggressive that her both eyes had been swollen shut.

"There is no quality of life left for her and we've had to make the painful decision to end her suffering," she added on Mdm Wong's Shelter's Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mdm-Wongs-Shelter/312804877843).

Wander had been housed at the shelter since early January after being rescued by good Samaritans.

The dog was allegedly abused by a China foreign worker according to a report on citizen journalism portal Stomp.

Baby strangled by own umbilical cord survives - A baby boy, who was starved of oxygen at birth, has survived with a new medical technique

Baby strangled by own umbilical cord survives

A baby boy, who was starved of oxygen at birth, has survived with a new medical technique.

Jamie Merricks was born with his umbilical cord wrapped around his throat.

This prevented him from breathing resulting in damage to his brain after it was starved of oxygen.

Doctors at a hospital in Birmingham, UK, utilised a new treatment where they cooled the baby down to well below normal body temperature, between 33 and 34 degrees Centigrade.

The treatment involved a machine called a Tecotherm Neo, which uses cooling fluid - similar to that used in a car - in a mat onto which the baby is placed.

The baby's temperature is monitored via a probe, allowing the machine to make continual temperature adjustments.

This treatment was inspired by the experiences of climbers who had been trapped, but had endured freezing conditions.

Jamie's doctor Vidya Garikapati said the idea was to "decrease the metabolism in the brain and thereby helping brain to recover and limit the damage which has already happened".

Garikapati believes the new treatment is the biggest breakthrough in the care of newborns in the last 20 years.

Toddler in oven dies from heat injuries

A toddler whose body was found inside the electric oven at his family's home died from heat injuries, according to preliminary results from medical examiners released Friday.

Washington County Coroner Methel Johnson said the pathologist was still trying to determine if 3-year-old Tristan Robinson was conscious when he was put inside the oven. He also appeared to have suffered trauma to his head.

Greenville Police found the boy's body at his mother's apartment Wednesday after responding to an emergency call just after midnight. The mother, 24-year-old Terrie A. Robinson, has been charged with murder. She is being held on a $5 million bond.

Police have declined to release many details because of the ongoing investigation.

Johnson said a little girl found in the home was placed in the care of the Mississippi Department of Human Services.

"I've seen a lot of things in my years doing this, but nothing like this," Johnson said. "I just thought about my grandchildren."

Terrie Robinson's twin sister, Sherrie Robinson, told WXVT-TV that people should not judge her sister before all the facts are known.

"She was a great parent, a good person. We don't know what's wrong. We don't know what happened. Do not sit there and call her a bad mom cause that's not what she is," Sherrie Robinson told the TV station. - AP

Well-preserved Ming Dynasty mummy found

Well-preserved Ming Dynasty mummy found

The well-preserved remains of a woman, believed to be from the Ming Dynasty, was excavated in China.

Road workers in Taizhou city of Jiangsu province made the discovery by accident.

A rough check on the body found the woman's features had hardly deteriorated. Even her eyebrows were intact.

The mummy, which is 1.5m-tall and in her 50s or 60s, was wearing traditional Ming costume and shoes made of cotton.

Also found were a blanket, a wooden pillow, some papers and other relics.

From the items in the coffin, archaeologists believed she was a commoner of the dynasty that had ruled China between 1368 and 1644.

World's first wizard school opens - Harry Potter is no longer a fantasy following the opening of the world's first wizard school

World's first wizard school opens

Harry Potter is no longer a fantasy following the opening of the world's first wizard school.

Oberon Zell-Ravenheart has dedicated his life to studying the Dark Arts and now, the "Dumbledore" wants to make Harry Potter a reality.

The 68-year-old has opened the world's only registered wizard academy - the Grey School of Wizardry - in US.

"If you've ever read Harry Potter and wondered if wizards really do walk among us, I can tell you that we are absolutely real," Oberon told The Daily Mail.

Like "Hogwarts", the Grey School teaches 16 departments including Alchemy, Beastmastery, Horse-whispering, wand-making and spell casting.

Pupils who attend the magic schools are split into four ancient houses - Winds, Undines, Gnomes and Salamanders.

And just like Potter, students study a defence against the deadly Dark Arts.

"It's a serious qualification," the wizard insisted.

"We teach advanced Mathemagicks, Quantum entanglement, Cosmology & Metaphysics, Lore, Wortcunning (herbal medicine) and all the ancient sciences."

"We hold regular conclave summer camps for young wizards, and we are soon hoping to achieve some graduates in our four-year Master’s degree in magic."

Oberon is also an author who has written many books believed by the wizard community to be the 'bibles of Wizardry'.

According to Wikipedia, he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Westminster College in Missouri. Two years later, he received a Doctor of Divinity from Life Science College in Illinois, then a teaching certificate from Harris Teacher's College in St. Louis.

Oberon met his wife, Morning Glory, at a pagan festival in 1973, where he was a keynote speaker.

They married less than a year later.

"She is my soulmate, we have everything in common," he said.

Together, the couple founded the mystical Ecosophical Research Association in 1977, before creating a unicorn Bedevere, using minor surgery to the horn buds of a goat.

The animal has long since died but Oberon keeps the remarkable skull as a prop in his bizarre home.

An odd-job worker fell to his death from the same apartment block where his mother had also suffered the same fate five years ago

Man falls to death like mum

GEORGE TOWN: An odd-job worker fell to his death from the same apartment block where his mother had also suffered the same fate five years ago.

The body of Chong Sin Hooi, 34, was found sprawled on the ground of the apartment block in Paya Terubong after falling from the 10th floor of the building yesterday.

A resident, who declined to be named, claimed that the body of Chong’s mother was also found there when she fell to her death five years ago. The resident said Chong’s mother had suffered from breast cancer.

Chong, who lived on the second floor with his family, was said to have been behaving strangely at home at about 11am yesterday.

It is learnt that his father had followed him when he left the apartment and went up to the 10th floor.

But by the time his father arrived on that floor, Chong had already fallen to his death.

It is believed that Chong was suffering from health problems. His family members who were at the scene were too distraught to speak to the press.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the case had been classified as sudden death.

Chong is the eighth person reported to have fallen to death in Penang since Jan 1.

The other victims include tuition teacher Lim Chee Hwa who fell to his death from a five-storey building on Perak Road on Jan 2 after celebrating his 21st birthday several days earlier. He was believed to be involved in a love triangle.

Another case involved wireman Fong Wei Shen, 22, who had persuaded his former girlfriend not to jump from the eighth floor of an apartment block but fell to his death later on Feb 11.

The most recent case was that of 17-year-old Lee Li Cheng who fell to her death from an apartment block in Jelutong on Feb 25.

Don’t drink liquid from ‘rain’ trees

Don’t drink liquid from ‘rain’ trees

KEPALA BATAS: The public have been advised against drinking the “holy water” showering down from a tree in Pinang Tunggal and another in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Consumers Association of Penang rural education officer N.V. Subbarow said it was foolish for anyone to wipe their bodies and faces with the water or to even drink it.

“People are merely exposing themselves to unknown risks as the authorities have yet to run tests on the water.

“They should be reminded that many diseases are spread by animals and insects, including leptospirosis which is spread through water,” he said yesterday.

Thousands of people from as far as Johor and Malacca have been flocking to see the two trees since Feb 26.

Witnesses claimed that they had felt showers from the trees – a 12m-high petai tree in Kampung Lembah Raja, Pinang Tunggal and an 18m-high wild tree in Taman Ria Jaya, Sungai Petani.

Former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia lecturer Prof Dr Zaidi Mat Isa had said the showers could be water discharge or urine from cicadas during mating season.

Subbarow said those people making a fast buck from selling the “holy water” at RM5 per glass were being “irresponsible”.

“Who is going to be responsible when the person who drinks the water falls sick?” he said.

“People should stop wasting their time and money travelling across borders merely to catch this so-called unusual phenomenon.”

State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the Forestry Department had taken samples of the water and cicadas from the petai tree in Kepala Batas for testing.

“We expect to get the results within a week or two,” he said.
