Lee Jung-jae reunites with Jeon Ji-hyun in caper film

Lee Jung-jae reunites with Jeon Ji-hyun in caper film
by javabeans

When the “Korean Ocean’s Eleven” was first announced a couple months ago, we knew we could expect a big-name cast, from the attachment of A-lister Lee Jung-jae (The Housemaid) and based on the pattern established by the Hollywood franchise. And yup, the project has now brought onboard a whole slew of famous faces, starting with Jeon Ji-hyun (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan), who re-teams with Lee after first starring with him in the lovely romantic film Il Mare back in 2000. (I LOVE the subtle, understated Il Mare; it still pains me what Hollywood did to it with The Lake House.)

The movie is titled Thieves and centers around a heist in a Macau casino; the prize is a multimillion-dollar diamond called “The Sun’s Tear.” Heading the “once-in-a-lifetime cast” is Lee Jung-jae playing the mastermind, with Jeon playing a loud-mouthed, curse-up-a-storm type of thief (my kinda girl!) who specializes in jewelry and art. Then there’s Korea’s veteran glamourpuss Kim Hye-soo (Home Sweet Home, Tazza) playing a familiar role, the femme fatale, though this one also is a master safecracker.

“National actor” Kim Yoon-seok (The Chaser, Jeon Woo Chi) also stars, as well as other famous veterans like Oh Dal-soo (The Fixer, Bang-ja Chronicle) and “Korea’s Mom” Kim Hae-sook (Life Is Beautiful, Thirst).

Thieves is helmed by a man who knows how to mix crime, action, and comedy; Choi Dong-hoon directed Tazza, The Big Swindle, and Jeon Woo Chi. It’ll begin shooting in May.

Search is on for next Miss Universe M'sia

The Miss Universe Malaysia organisation is looking for qualified Malaysian women to compete in its 2012 national pageant and to star in a new reality TV show.

This marks the first time a reality TV show is used as part of the pageant.

The twist is part of the pageant’s new format, which will now allow the nation to identify with the next candidate to represent Malaysia as they go through the grooming and training process onscreen.

The casting call will kick off at Sunway Pyramid (Blue Concourse) at the Ground Floor on March 19 and 20 from 11.00am – 7.00pm.

Other confirmed casting-call venues include Sarawak Spring Mall in Kuching on March 26 and 27, and Mahkota Parade in Malacca on April 2 and 3.

Here’s how it works: aspiring beauty queens will get to nominate themselves for the pageant. All they have to do is get their pictures taken at the selected venues.

Early birds at the venues also stand a chance to receive a free make-over, courtesy of Xpression Master, Rimmel London and A Cut Above stylists.

Fifty shortlisted candidates will be invited to meet the judges in Kuala Lumpur next.

The girls will then be placed within a sealed and secured “secret location” where they will undergo training, grooming and everyday challenges ala America’s Next Top Model.

The final 10 to emerge from the show will go on to compete at the Gala Night finale, where the winner will be crowned.

Meanwhile, the top five girls will receive internships, jobs and other opportunities in the entertainment industry with over RM200,000 cash and prizes up for grabs.

All contestants of the pageant must be between the ages of 18 and 27 as of February 1 2012, non-married and non-Muslim.

She must not be divorced; must never have been married or had a marriage annulled; and must not have had children.

She must also be a Malaysian or is a Malaysian passport holder and have a minimum height of 163cm.

“We’re crowning Miss Universe Malaysia a year in advance from now on, to allow for more time to make her shine before she competes at Miss Universe,” said Andrea Fonseka, national director of the Miss Universe Malaysia organisation.

Fonseka herself took home the Miss Universe Malaysia title in 2004.

Model and television personality Deborah Henry is the reigning Miss Universe Malaysia and will compete at the Miss Universe 2011 pageant in Sao Paolo, Brazil in September.

Miss Universe Malaysia 2012 will be crowned in November this year.

'Miracle baby' rescued after 3 days - Back in safe arms...the four-month-old baby who found alive in the tsunami rubble after three days

'Miracle baby' rescued after 3 days

The sound of a baby’s cry amid the rubble seemed so impossible that soldiers searching a tsunami-smashed village dismissed it as a mistake.

But it came again. And they realised they had not been hearing things.

They pulled away wood and slate, dug back thick oozing mud - and there was the child they were to describe as a 'tiny miracle'.

The four-month-old girl had been swept from her parents’ arms in the shattered village of Ishinomaki when the deadly wave crashed into the family home.

Back in safe arms...the four-month-old baby who found alive in the tsunami rubble after three days

For three days, the child’s frantic family had believed she was lost to them for ever.

But on Monday, for a brief moment, the horrors of the disaster were brightened by one helpless baby’s story of survival.

Soldiers from the Japanese Defence Force had been going from door to door pulling bodies from the devastated homes in Ishinomaki, a coastal town northeast of Sendai.

Most of the victims were elderly, unable to escape the destructive black tide.

But for this precious moment, at least, it was only the child who mattered to the team of civil defence troops who found her.
