Japan quake: Helicopters dump water on stricken nuke plant

TOKYO: Japanese military helicopters have started dumping water onto reactors three and four of the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant to douse exposed fuel rods.

According to NHK, three military helicopters emptied more than seven tonnes of water onto the reactors in a bid to prevent a meltdown.

Friday's earthquake and tsunami have knocked out cooling systems at the Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant 250 kilometres northeast of Tokyo, sending temperatures soaring in the reactors and sparking four explosions and two fires.

The lack of power has sent temperatures soaring in reactors with fuel rods being exposed as the cooling water evaporated and emitting hydrogen gas and possibly radioactive material, triggering fears of a meltdown.

A Japanese army helicopter Wednesday aborted its mission to dump water onto the fuel rods due to the high level of radiation above the reactors.

Justin Bieber in wax - Justin Bieber met his wax likeness at Madame Tussauds in London, Britain, recently

Justin Bieber in wax

Justin Bieber met his wax likeness at Madame Tussauds in London, Britain, recently.

The teenage pop star could barely hide his excitement as he snapped a picture of himself with the figure, posted it on his Twitter and tweeted: "TWINS! Lol."

He joked in his next tweet: "knew [my mom] had more kids!"

It’s up to fans to decide on whether the figure looks exactly like the Canadian singer, but one apparent difference lies in the hairstyle, as the figure was created before Bieber cut his signature locks and went for a shorter hairdo last month.

That’s not going to be the only wax statue of the wonder boy, as more will be displayed in Madame Tussauds museums in New York, the U.S. and Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Brute rapes virgin in public - A 210 pound-thug raped a virgin on a town centre pavement in the United Kingdom as motorists drove by, without stopping

Brute rapes virgin in public

A 210 pound-thug raped a virgin on a town centre pavement in the United Kingdom as motorists drove by, without stopping.

The thug, Gary Gunstone, followed the woman through the streets of North Devon, just after midnight, reported The Daily Mail.

She was walking to her parent’s home after visiting her boyfriend.

The thug threatened her with a knife.

She tried to resist, hitting and kicking him but he was too strong and heavy and overpowered her.

The brute dragged her to the ground and raped her in full view of passing drivers.

He later bragged to police that she had agreed to sex there and then.

Judge Jeremy Griggs said, "She was a 30-year-old virgin who had a regular boyfriend for eight years and wished to remain with that status until her wedding night."

The judge said Gunstone had raped the woman just two weeks after his jail licence had expired for a previous sex attack, which had "spine chilling" similarities to this attack.

Gunstone was jailed at Exeter crown court for a minimum of four years and three months as a judge said the parole board would decide if and when he can be released.

Sleep with the Terracotta warriors - A hotel apartment designed wholly with Terracotta warrior figurines is a hit in Xi'an, China

Sleep with the Terracotta warriors

A hotel apartment designed wholly with Terracotta warrior figurines is a hit in Xi'an, China.

Besides the real Terracotta warrior, tourists have stormed the apartment in the city centre since it started operation in 2008.

Its owner Guo Zhihua said the Terracotta warrior figurines are present at every corner of the apartment - the kitchen, the bedrooms and even the bathrooms.

"A lot of people have come to tour the place, but only a handful of them, mostly foreigners, decided to spend their nights here.

"Many are scare of the place," he laughed, adding a baby started crying the moment he entered the premises.

Guo said the apartment has three units that are adorned with 55 human-size Terracotta warriors and numerous figurine replicas.

The Terracotta Army is a form of funerary art buried with the First Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, in 210 - 209 B.C.

They were only discovered in 1974 by a group of farmers digging a water well.

A red Tibetan mastiff has become the world's most expensive dog after it was sold for 10 million Chinese yuan, or 945,000 pounds

Red Tibetan mastiff becomes world's most expensive dog at 945K pounds
China National News
Wednesday 16th March, 2011
(ANI)

A red Tibetan mastiff has become the world's most expensive dog after it was sold for 10 million Chinese yuan, or 945,000 pounds.

The dog, named Big Splash, or Hong Dong in Chinese, was bought by a coal baron from the north of China.

And the hefty price tag does not include Big Splash's food, which comprises of enough chicken and beef to fill a growing 180lb dog, along with Chinese delicacies such as sea cucumber and abalone.

According to breeder Lu Liang, Big Splash is a "perfect specimen" and the extravagant price for the 11-month-old is completely justified.

"We have spent a lot of money raising this dog, and we have the salaries of plenty of staff to pay," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

He added that the new owner could charge almost 10,000 pounds a time for Big Splash to breed with a female.

His owner will need a big house too, as adult Tibetan mastiffs have been known to weigh as much as 286lb - the same as a sizeable rugby player.

The high price paid for the dog is a sign that the red Tibetan mastiff has become a status symbol in China, as the animal is thought not only to be holy, but also a blessing to their owners' health and security.

Tibetans believe the dogs have the souls of monks and nuns who were not good enough to be reincarnated as humans or into Shambhala, the heavenly realm.

These days there are only around 300 Tibetan mastiffs in the UK, and puppies sell for a more reasonable 850 pounds to 1,000 pounds.

"They are very smart and they think for themselves and can sense danger very acutely," James Pally, a Tibetan mastiff breeder from Pantymwyn near Mold in Flintshire, North Wales, said.

"Tibetan mastiffs were originally used to guard the livestock and they are very good with other animals and they love children.

"I have six of them and if you don't give them enough attention they sit in front of the TV," he added. (ANI)
