Foreigners rush to leave Japan as radiation threat grows

Foreigners rush to leave Japan as radiation threat grows

TOKYO: Even as the Japanese authorities continued with attempts to contain the risk of leaks from a quake-hit nuclear plant, fears of radiation exposure have spread, prompting an exodus of foreign nationals from the country following warnings by several countries for their nationals to leave unsafe zones, including Tokyo.

There was panic buying of salt in China, where many believe the iodine in the commodity can help ward off the effects of radiation exposure.

About 25 air passengers from Japan were also observed with slightly higher levels of exposure to radiation upon arrival in Taiwan, and authorities in South Korea reported unusually high radiation levels on three passengers who had arrived.

KAJANG: Screen and TV celebrity Janet Khoo, listed by a men’s magazine as one of the 100 sexiest women in the country, is fearing for her life following the gory death of her brother early this month.

Businessman Khoo Kim Leong, 47, was reportedly beaten up and strangled before his body was thrown into a ravine at Lembah Pangsun, near here.

A passer-by found the decomposed body while walking in the area at about 11.40pm on March 6.

Kim Leong was found dead with his legs tied and his body wrapped in a mattress.

It is believed that he was involved in a heated argument before his tragic death.

Trying hard to hold back her tears, a distraught Janet, 39, said it was painful to talk about her brother’s brutal murder.

“His death was so tragic. It’s a police case now. I’m sorry I can’t reveal the details because my life and my family’s life are in danger right now,” she told the Daily Chilli, the news portal of The Star.

“It’s so painful to see my brother’s body which was beyond recognition.

“I am still shocked over what had happened and hope the public will give me and my family some time to calm down.”

Janet had appeared in award-winning TV dramas and films, including a lead role in the 2003 blockbuster Paloh about the confrontation between the Japanese occupation forces and the local people in the 1940s and the self-produced Haryati for Astro Ria in 2005.

Janet said she and her family had been advised by the police to take precautions because revenge was believed to be the motive behind her brother’s murder.

“I’m not even allowed to discuss his funeral details. I hope my fans and my media friends can understand my situation.

“I appreciate everyone’s concern. But at present, I need to protect my family and myself,” she said.

Meanwhile, police said they had detained two suspects in their 30s for questioning.

Surrounded by hot male models, ntv7 executives, including (second and third from left in the back row) Lai Cheah Yee and ntv7 & 8TV Group General Manager Airin Zainul, unveiled The Perfect Gentleman, Malaysia's first beauty contest for Chinese men. (image source: China Press)

By Chew Wan Ying

It is touted as the first beauty and talent pageant for Malaysian Chinese men.

No, it's not the Malaysian version of TVB’s Mr. Hong Kong.

ntv7 Brand Management Group manager Lai Cheah Yee says The Perfect Gentleman 2011 aims to find a good looking hunk with talents to boot.

In other words, the show will serve as a platform to unearth new talents for the TV station.

"We are not just interested in discovering someone who looks good on the runway," she said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

One’s personality, stamina as well as determination to succeed would weigh as much as one's physical appearance and style.

Also, different from usual pageants, The Perfect Gentleman 2011 would see the top 16 contestants being groomed, styled and coached by a panel of judges consisting of local and international designers and celebrities.

What’s more, throughout the 12 episodes, they will be assigned various fun-filled tasks and challenges, à la reality game shows.

Watch out for four auditions that are set to tale place in Johor, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, with the first one at Grand Paragon Hotel in Johor on April 17.

Only 30 would be selected from the auditions and only six finalists would have the chance to vie for the title at the grand finale on Oct 9.

*The Perfect Gentleman 2011 will air every Sunday at 6pm, starting from July 17 on ntv7. For more info, log on to the official website at www.ntv7.com.my/theperfectgentleman or official Facebook page (ntv7.perfectgentleman).

The 31-year-old model has announced that she is pregnant with her first child with her rugby player boyfriend Thom Evans and revealed that she already knows the sex of the baby.

She wrote on her twitter page: "Thom and I are happy to announce we are expecting a baby girl. We are delighted XXXX."

The brunette beauty - who has dated Billy Zane and Jason Statham - recently admitted that she makes more effort with her appearance when in London because her she thinks people have a more relaxed style in Los Angeles.

She said: "When I'm in London I like dressing up. I'll wear lots of 50s-style prom dresses, pencil skirts, and blouses because they really flatter my hourglass figure. But right now I'm living in LA so I'm living in jeans and t-shirts."

Katie Price to host US reality show - Katie Price has reportedly landed a £1 million (RM4.92million) deal to present a US reality TV show

Katie Price to host US reality show

Katie Price has reportedly landed a £1 million (RM4.92million) deal to present a US reality TV show.

The 32-year-old former glamour model - who travelled to Los Angeles last month for screen tests - will front the eight-part series 'Make Me A Hunk', where she will help transform a geeky guy in each episode.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "It is a huge deal for Kate and she is thrilled. It is the biggest gig of her career to date and the first time she will have fronted a TV show."

Katie - who recently filed for divorce from cage-fighter Alex Reid after 11 months of marriage - is said to have won over producers with her acerbic wit and British charm and now the show is the focus of a bidding war between three big US networks, ABC, E! and CW.

The insider added: "Contrary to other reports, this deal was the reason she was in the States. American networks love all things British at the moment."

"They feel viewers will warm to Kate's-larger-than life personality and blunt put-downs - although producers were startled at how sarcastic and rude she was to the guy in the pilot episode."

" But it worked, she toughened him up and worked her magic."

US dog's life changes after rising from 'dead'

OKLAHOMA CITY - A STRAY dog who survived an attempt to put him to sleep at an animal shelter has become a canine celebrity, with thousands seeking to adopt him, an appearance on a national television show and growing concerns about his safety as his fan base increases.

Wall-E was among several dogs abandoned by the Sulphur Animal Shelter less than a month ago. A local veterinarian tried to euthanise the puppy due to overcrowding, but he somehow survived.

Now, about 3,000 people have expressed interest in adopting him and US$1,200 (S$1,535) has been donated for his care. He was flown to New York City to appear on Good Morning America. Concerns about his safety have arisen as some people have said they want to breed him to make money.

Veterinarian technician Amanda Kloski, who works at Arbuckle Veterinarian Clinic, has been surprised by some of the phone calls and e-mails the clinic has received. She said one man travelled from Arkansas to the clinic in Sulphur, south of Oklahoma City, offering to take Wall-E off her hands and breed him.

'It's been crazy,' Ms Kloski said on Wednesday.

Since that incident, Wall-E has been going home with a designated individual each night, rather than staying at the clinic. Also, plans are to have Wall-E neutered before he is sent to a new home. -- AP
