Loyal dog refuses to leave injured mate
A video of a shivering dog staying loyally by the side of a fellow canine amid the devastation in northern Japan has emerged as the country faces nuclear crisis and thousands of people left homeless.
The brown-and-white spaniel was found dirty and shivering as it approached reporters in Ibaraki prefecture.
It was filmed barking at them before returning to another lighter-coloured dog that was lying motionless amidst a tsunami-ravaged landscape.
The dog was filmed guarding its apparently injured companion before placing a protective paw over it
The spaniel, wearing a silver collar, was filmed guarding its prone and apparently injured companion before placing a protective paw over it as the reporters discussed what to do.
Moments later, the injured dog lifted its head and shortly afterwards sat up.
The reporters can be heard in the clip discussing the fate of the dogs.
"It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all."
Both dogs have reportedly been rescued since the video was filmed. The injured dog has been treated by a vet in Mito while the spaniel is at a shelter in the same town.

Crazed man killed wife over affair with teen - A crazed husband in the UK murdered his wife after discovering she was having an affair with a teenager
Crazed man killed wife over affair with teen
A crazed husband in the UK murdered his wife after discovering she was having an affair with a teenager before killing himself, an inquest heard Friday.
Barry Harrison, 47, and his wife Amanda, 34, were found dead inside their home with their children nearby on August 9 last year.
Amanda suffered neck injuries and is believed to have been strangled with a piece of washing line found by her body and Barry was found hanging.
Their two sons, Owen, aged three, and Aiden, five, were found by Pat Cannon, who works as a manager for the block of flats and who had been asked by her sister, Maureen Cannon, to visit the apartment.
Murder-suicide...Barry Harrison (right) killed his wife after finding out about her affair with a 19-year old and then committed suicide
The boys told her that "Mummy and Daddy are asleep".
The inquest heard that the children had been in the flat in Regal Court, High Street, Shanklin, Isle of Wight, with their dead parents for at least 24 hours.
The hearing at Newport Coroner’s Court was told that the couple, who met while working at the Peugeot car plant in Coventry, Warwickshire, had moved to the Isle of Wight after they were made redundant and had their home in Bedworth repossessed.
They both suffered from depression brought on by their financial difficulties, the inquest heard.
The hearing was told they had both found work on the Island, Barry as a fruit picker on a tomato farm and his wife as a sales supervisor at a Co-op store in Bembridge.
Maureen Cannon, who had known the couple from when she lived in Coventry but who had lived on the Island since 2003, said that Amanda had told her that she had started an affair with a 19-year-old customer at her shop called Alex Harmer-Wood.

Michael Gough, the beloved British character actor whom many will remember from the pre-Chris Nolan Batman movies, has passed away aged 94.
Born in Kuala Lumpur, Gough made his film debut in 1947 in Blanche Fury and went on to achieve fame in British television.
He made two memorable appearances as villains in Doctor Who - first as the titular villain of the second Doctor serial The Celestial Toymaker in 1966, then as a Time Lord councillor in league with Omega in the fifth Doctor serial Arc of Infinity in 1983.
He also married Anneke Wills, an actress who played one of the Doctor's companions on the show.
His big screen credits are even more impressive with key roles in Harold Pinter's The Go-Between, Laurence Olivier's Richard III, Sydney Pollack's Out of Africa, John Huston's A Walk With Love and Death, Franklin J. Schaffner's The Boys from Brazil, Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow, Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow and Corpse Bride, and the film adaptation of Frederick Forsyth's The Fourth Protocol.

Electric cars to hit the roads by June
Electric cars to hit the roads by June
By SYED AZHAR
newsdesk@thestar.com.my
KOTA BARU: Electric cars will be hitting the roads by June after legal standardisation of the vehicles is completed.
Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said the Transport Min-istry was drawing up laws to enable 10 appointed companies to start producing the cars.
“We are now in the final stage of formulating the laws on the use of such cars on Malaysian roads according to the United Nations Economic Commissions for Africa standards pertaining to electric cars.
“We first have to get down to basics, where car manufacturers must meet specifications formulated like the type of battery, maximum speed and the braking system,” he said yesterday after opening the Malaysian Driving Institute Association annual general meeting and dialogue session.
Solah also said Parliament passed an amendment to the Road Transport Act 1987 last year to accommodate the electric cars in the Act, whereby only the chassis numbers of the electric cars need to be registered at JPJ.
He also said the ministry was working out other details on how to convert electric power to horsepower and the amount of road tax.
Earlier in his speech, Solah said the department needed the cooperation of driving institutes to self-regulate when handling new driving students.
He said the move will help create competition among the institutes to produce competent new drivers.

72-year-old woman loses life savings to scam
72-year-old woman loses life savings to scam
KUALA LUMPUR: A 72-year-old retired civil servant, who thought she was close to becoming a millionaire, instead lost her life savings to a 4-digit scam.
The woman, who only wanted to be identified as Ng, said she received a flyer in her letterbox in Klang last November with the photo of a monk, who provided help to those with financial, family and matchmaking problems.
“I was devastated and even thought about killing myself when I realised there was no more money in my bank account,” she said at a press conference yesterday organised by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong.
She lost RM136,292 intended for her retirement to a tok guru (master), who claimed to have the power to bestow good fortune.
Ng said she called up the handphone number provided on the flyer and was told by a man known as Mr Lee that she had won RM1.5mil in the lottery that was bought and claimed on her behalf.
“He sent me a laminated copy as proof. However, to get the money, I had to send money for prayers to protect the winning ticket,” she added.
Ng said she transferred all her savings in 15 transactions to a man’s account between last November and January this year.
She added she did not tell anyone about the matter until she received another call asking for RM52,000, which was government tax for the money that she had won.
She said she only realised what she had done when she wanted to borrow money from her niece, who scolded her and took her to the police station.
Chong said he had received reports of 16 similar cases and had exposed such scams through the media at least 10 times since 2008.
Chong added that he would lodge a complaint with Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong about such predators placing advertisement on flyers or magazines to con the public.
He said most of the victims were senior citizens who lost their life savings, while some add on to their problems by borrowing money from illegal moneylenders.

Weatherman: Don’t fear today’s ‘supermoon’
PETALING JAYA: The public need not fear today’s “supermoon” as it will not cause any tsunami or earthquake, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said.
The moon would be closest to the earth today for the first time in 20 years, making it look larger and brighter.
It is set to brighten the sky from just 356,577km away.
The department’s Geophysics & Tsunami Division director Dr Rosaidi Che Abas said there was no relation between the “supermoon” and natural disasters.
“The earthquake is caused by the earth’s internal (crust) movements and the tsunami occurs when the sea floor moves,” he said.
“The public is advised not to be worried about any earthquake, tsunami or unusual weather on that day. It won’t affect the local climate,” said Dr Rosaidi.
The larger moon, however, might cause a rise in sea levels given the stronger gravity pull, especially in areas facing the moon, he added.
Dr Rosaidi said that the Department of Survey and Map-ping Malaysia (Jupem) could gauge this.
According to Jupem’s Tide Table Prediction book for this year, tide levels were expected to be in the normal category for this month.
However, Kukup in Johor, was expected to experience low tide.
Jupem has 12 tide gauge stations in the peninsula, six in Sabah and three in Sarawak.

Harder to get credit cards - The minimum annual income requirement for credit card eligibility has been raised to RM24,000 from RM18,000
Harder to get credit cards
By LEONG HUNG YEE and ISABELLE LAI
hungyee@thestar.com.my
KUALA LUMPUR: The minimum annual income requirement for credit card eligibility has been raised to RM24,000 from RM18,000 in a move to keep household debt at manageable levels.
For cardholders earning RM36,000 per an-num and less, they can only hold credit cards from a maximum of two issuers.
The maximum credit limit for those earning less than RM36,000 per year has also been capped to double the monthly income of the card holder from each issuing bank.
For example, if a credit card holder earns RM3,000 a month, his credit limit is RM6,000 from one bank.
The same card holder will also be able to get another RM6,000 combined credit limit with another issuing bank.
Thus the maximum credit limit a person earning RM3,000 a month will get is a total of RM12,000 from two issuing banks regardless of the number of cards.
In a briefing yesterday, Bank Negara deputy governor Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus said it was a pre-emptive move although credit card debt in Malaysia remained at a “manageable level”.
As at end-2010, outstanding credit card debt totalled RM30.8bil or 5% of total household debt.
“Although credit card usage continues to increase, the non-performing loan ratio rem-ains low.
“As at end 2010, credit card non-performing loans were only 1.7% of total credit card loans and 2% of the total banking system’s non-performing loans,” Nor Shamsiah said.
She also said that 50% of the 3.2 million card holders in the country earn below RM36,000 while less than 30% of the cardholders own cards from more than two issuers.
Credit card issuers are also required to ad-opt a fair, transparent and responsible practices under the guidelines.
Issuers are not allowed to increase card holders’ credit limit without consent nor are they allowed to offer credit advance in the form of cheques unless requested.
In an effort to further enhance credit card security and to promote public confidence in the usage of credit cards as a safe payment ins-trument, effective Jan 1 next year, transaction alerts via SMS to card holders will be implemented after transactions are performed followed by personal identification number (PIN) verification for all card transactions from Jan 1, 2015.
The Association of Banks in Malaysia said individual financial circumstances would be taken into account in implementing the rev-ised credit card guidelines.
Its executive director Chuah Mei Lin said commercial bank issuers might consider restructuring the credit card facility and/or repayments on a case-to-case basis.
