Shoppers on edge as woman tries to jump

KOTA BARU: Shoppers were shocked to see a 20-year-old woman try to kill herself by jumping from a three-storey shopping complex.

She was saved by the quick action of the mall’s management as well as Fire and Rescue Department personnel.

The woman, who works at the shopping complex in Wakaf Che Yeh, is said to be disturbed by family issues.

The drama unfolded at 3pm when the woman from Kampung Gaung, armed with a knife, perched on the ledge of the third floor of the building in Jalan Hamzah here.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel took more than an hour trying to coax her down from the ledge, but she refused to talk to them.

District Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Shahrin Yusman Mat Yusof said rescue efforts were made difficult after the woman threatened to stab herself whenever the firemen approached.

“One of our personnel, Mohd Zaki Ismail, managed to grab the woman but she resisted and fell.

“She was lucky to fall on a cushion put up by the mall management and department personnel,” Shahrin told reporters at the scene here yesterday.

He added that the woman only suffered bruises on her face when she grazed the building during the fall.

The woman’s uncle said she had personal problems with her mother.

Baby sister left alone in a bag

JOHOR BARU: A six-year-old boy, who was left alone to take care of three other siblings, decided to put his three-month-old baby sister in a travelling bag before leaving her at the void deck of an apartment block in Larkin.

The baby girl was left alone for more than half an hour before one of the residents saw her trying to crawl out of the bag.

The man immediately contacted police and rescued the baby.

Police brought the mother and her four children to the police station, located just a few metres away from the apartment block.

“Initial investigations revealed that the children were left under the care of their grandmmother while the mother was job hunting,’’ Johor Baru (South) OCPD ACP Zainuddin Yaakob said.

However he added, the grandmother had left the children aged between three months and six years at home as she had an appointment with a doctor at a nearby clinic.

ACP Zainuddin said the woman informed the police that her husband was away working in a resort at Pulau Sibu in Mersing, and she needed a job badly.

Two weddings for Rachel Tan - Actress-model Rachel Tan Weng Kim is set for two weddings

Two weddings for Rachel Tan
By Fiona Ho

Actress-model Rachel Tan Weng Kim is set for two weddings.

The Seremban-born beauty will say her ‘I dos’ at Malibu in Los Angeles this September and again in Kuala Lumpur sometime between December and next January.

Tan, 29, met her American-born Chinese fiancé Dan Mark, 30, at a church gathering in Hong Kong while he was on a mission trip.

Sparks flew immediately and the long-distance relationship that ensued was kept alive with phone calls, SMSes, e-mails, Facebook and Skype, Tan told The Star.

“The LA wedding will be held for Dan’s side of the family while the KL wedding will be held for mine,” she explained.

Mark, an entertainment lawyer for Warner Brothers’ in Los Angeles, proposed last week after just seven months into their relationship.

“It was a Romeo & Juliet themed proposal. He left a trail of roses that led all the way from the entrance to the balcony at his bachelor pad in LA. When I got there, it was lit with candles and flowers and he proposed with a ring on one bended knee.”

“I was in tears by then and of course, I said yes. We went to our favourite French restaurant afterwards and celebrated with champagne.”

The couple will celebrate their honeymoon in Rome and the Vatican City after their wedding ceremonies.

“Dan is everything I’ve asked God for. On top of that, he is also my emotional and spiritual guide and my best friend. Plus, I find him so good looking!”

Tan, who holds a masters degree in law from Cambridge University, currently works at a law firm in Hong Kong but will be moving to LA to live with Mark.

Tan first gained fame when she won the Miss Chinese International pageant in Hong Kong in 2003.

She also starred in the popular local Chinese sitcom Homecoming on Astro in 2003 and landed a two-year contract with Jackie Chan International artiste management in 2007.

Rabbits stamped to death

Rabbits stamped to death

A dozen rabbits were stamped to death at a breeder’s compound in the United Kingdom.

The rabbit cages were opened up and were stamped to death as they ran out, reported The Sun.

George Lanelly, 75, who bred the New Zealand whites and French Lops, said, "The people who did this must have chased some of them around as well because we found the bodies scattered all over the allotment."

Lanelly said, “After this I want to pack it (breeding) in. My son says I shouldn't, I still don't know what to do.

S'pore detects radioactivity in Japanese vegetables

S'pore detects radioactivity in Japanese vegetables

Four shipments of Japanese vegetables which arrived in Singapore will be destroyed after traces of radioactive contaminants were found in them.

The produce arrived on Wednesday from Tochigi, Ibaraki, Chiba and Ehime prefectures, said the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) at a press conference on Thursday night.

The vegetables affected were mitsuba (Japanese wild parsley), nanohana (rape seed plant), mizuna (Japanese mustard) and perilla leaf. They contained higher than usual levels of iodine-131, cesium-134 and cesium-137.

All the vegetables, totalling 144kg, were recalled successfully, except for 200g which had gone to a restaurant.

The AVA declined to identify the eatery, but said that the latter had disposed of the produce.

It said it will destroy the rest of the recalled stocks in an appropriate manner.

Web designer mocks mother in need

Web designer mocks mother in need

A Chinese woman, who desperately needs money to cure her sick daughter, has been made fun of by a web page designer.

Xie Sanxiu of Guangzhou, posted her plea – Good Samaritans Please Save My Eye-Cancer Baby – on a social networking site, Tianya, pleading for donations.

A netizen, nicknamed "Guangzhou Fu Gongzi" (Guangzhou Rich Man), promised to donate 20,000 yuan (RM9,230) with one condition.

"There are so many people in the world that need help, why must I help you? You say you are willing to exchange your life with your child's health, who believes you?

"If you can kneel and crawl on the road for 1,000 metres, I will immediately give you 20,000 yuan," he told Xie, 34.

On Tuesday, the desperate mother decided to crawl at Guangzhou Dadao Zhong, holding her six-month-old daughter Shanshan, in her arms.

A Guangzhou Daily reporter, who was notified of the incident, found Xie on the road crawling towards the Tianhe Sports Centre.

Around 5.30pm, a man who is a webpage designer with Tianya and nicknamed "Jinquan Shao Xia" (Jin Quan Young Knight), showed up and asked Xie to stop, saying "Guangzhou Fu Gongzi" already knew of her act.

Later he told the reporter: "I have some bad news. I have contacted 'Guangzhou Fu Gongzi' but he said he would not donate any money."

A Tianya official later revealed that "Guangzhou Fu Gongzi" and "Jinquan Shao Xia" is the same person.

It has since sacked the webpage designer, saying the website would not tolerate such irresponsible acts.

Its representatives also visited Shanshan at the hospital and said it would contact charity organisations to find ways to help the girl.
