Hailee Steinfeld to play Sleeping Beauty

Hailee Steinfeld is set to star in Sleeping Beauty.

The True Grit actress is attached to the fairytale movie which is currently being persued by potential buyers.

In the new version - written by Lindsay Devlin - Hailee's princess would be transported into a dream world which she tries to escape after being banished to slumber by a witch's curse.

The 14-year-old star impressed film bosses with her Oscar-nominated role in True Grit so much it is thought it won't take long for her reps at ICM to secure a deal.

Sleeping Beauty will be one of many fairytales being produced in Hollywood after Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland grossed over US$1 (RM3.02) billion worldwide last year.

The kooky director is now working on Maleficent - another version of Sleeping Beauty which focuses on the tale's evil queen - which has Angelina Jolie lined up the lead role.

Last year the brunette beauty revealed she would love to be involved in the project because she loved the character as a child.

She said: "It's all new and being discussed, but I loved her when I was a little girl. She was my favourite."

Girl,12, gives birth on school trip

A 12-year-old Dutch girl gave birth while on a school trip.

The girl, from Groningen, 183 km northeast of Amsterdam, complained of stomach pains March 22, during a day out with classmates.

Teachers realised the girl was in labor and called an ambulance. Medics rushed to the scene, and the 12 year old delivered a healthy baby girl in a nearby building.

The young mother was then taken to the hospital but has refused to name the father.

Family members said that the schoolgirl's father previously sexually abused another older daughter and served two years in jail for the sex crime, according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

The girl was living with her father and brother after he won custody following a divorce from their mother, who was originally from Suriname, a former Dutch colony in South America.

The girl's stepsister, 30, told the newspaper, "I warned him. I am shocked about what happened."

Dutch police said in a statement on Wednesday, "The girl got pregnant when she was 11, which in itself means there has been a criminal offense."

"Under Article 244 of the Penal Code, sex with a minor under 12, is punishable. In addition, there are now (circumstances) reported by the Child Protection Board. Taking these two into consideration, police are now investigating who the father (of this baby) is."

The girl was due to go into foster care once she was released from the hospital.

Obese dies after being fused to chair

A morbidly obese man is dead after he was found fused to a chair that he had been stuck on for two years.

The 43-year-old man from Bellaire, Ohio, in the US, was discovered unconscious on Sunday by his girlfriend.

Emergency crews had to pry him free, as his skin was stuck to the recliner with urine, feces and maggots.

Local reports say one officer threw away his uniform because the conditions were so putrid.

"The living room where the man lived in his chair was very filthy, very deplorable. It's unbelievable that somebody lives in conditions like that," Jim Chase, a code enforcer, told local news station WTRF.

A hole was cut in the wall of the home to remove the heavy man.

Officials said his girlfriend, who lived with him along with another roommate, told investigators she fed the man in his chair, as he complained of leg pain.

The unidentified man was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Smokey - the cat with the thunderous purr

No need to bell this cat: A gray-and-white tabby by the name of Smokey has cat-apulted to fame with purring so loud it has been recorded at a potentially record-setting 73 decibels.

The British community college that measured the sound said it peaked at 16 times louder than that of the average cat. By some estimates, that is about as noisy as busy traffic, a hair dryer or a vacuum cleaner.

The 12-year-old, ordinary-size feline first came to national attention last month when her owner, Ruth Adams, decided to run a local competition for the most powerful purr.

That led to a local radio show appearance, and from there, media coverage snowballed, with the tabloids full of headlines like "Thundercat" and "Rumpuss."

"Sometimes she purrs so loudly it makes her cough and splutter," Adams said on a website devoted to the cat, which was rescued from a shelter about three years ago. Smokey "even manages to purr while she eats."

Hoping to see Smokey recognized as top cat, Adams asked Northampton College in central England to provide the equipment needed to submit a world-record application.

Last week, the college dispatched a team with specialized sound equipment to record Smokey purring in the comfort of the family home in the village of Pitsford, about 110 km northwest of London.

The recording has been submitted to Guinness World Records, the college said.

Seventy-three decibels is louder than ordinary conversation, which is generally around 60 to 70 dB. On a video posted on the website, the purring sounded like the cooing of an angry dove.

Guinness World Records spokeswoman Amarilis Whitty said she is eagerly awaiting the recording.

While Smokey may have gotten used to the attention, the Adams household seems to be getting a little sick of it all.

"Oh, God, you're not the only caller," said a man who answered the phone at the home Wednesday. He then hung up.

Cats purr by moving the muscles in their throats and diaphragm. But precisely why they do it is a matter of debate. Cats can purr when they are pleased - for example, when they are stroked - but they also purr under stress.

Some scientists believe that purring has a social or even a healing function.

"She is LOUD, VERY LOUD and keeps going," Adams said on the website, adding: "She is one very happy pussycat and wants to tell the whole world how happy she is."

Five-year-old shot by teens

A five-year-old girl in the United Kingdom was shot by bicycle riding teens.

She was an unfortunate victim of a squabble by two rival teen gangs.

The gang was in pursuit of a rival gang who ran into the store for cover, where the five-year-old was at.

Thusa Kamaleswaran was shot in the chest as one of the gang members fired a shot through the door of the food and wine store, reported The Sun.

Another innocent bystander, 35-year-old Roshan Selvakumar, was shot in the face.

The pair was taken to hospital for life-saving surgery.

Thusa had two operations and underwent a third.

Both victims were in a "critical but stable" condition.

The girl's uncle Vicknes Mahadevan said: "I was at the back of the shop, then heard something. I rushed out and could see the shooting.

"Thusa was hit on the right side of her chest. There was blood everywhere. She was flat on the floor. It was horrible."

A local businessman named Das said: "I went inside the shop and saw a little girl lying face down like she was asleep.

"There was a hole on the right side of her chest, up near her heart. The mum was crying and screaming."

The gun thugs fled on their bikes after the shootings in Stockwell, South London - chased by their intended victims.

A local man who gave his name as George said: "They looked like schoolkids and were only aged around 13 to 15."

A FOUR-MONTH pregnant woman was punched and kicked by her husband after she asked him to look for two types of “rare” food in the middle of the night.

Harian Metro reported that the woman, aged 28, had developed a craving for various types of delicacies and fruits which were difficult to find.

Previously, the husband, in his 30s, had obliged her requests but this time his emotions got the better of him and he lost his temper.

In the latest incident on Tuesday, the woman again pestered her husband to look for buah kelur and lempuk durian when he returned to their house in Bandar Baru Sentul from work at 11pm.

“The husband blew his top and scolded his wife.

“The couple argued for a good 20 minutes before he lost control of his anger and started punching and kicking his wife,” a source said.

The wife contacted a friend to send her to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a check-up before lodging a police report.

Hairstylist gets death for kidnap and murder of teen girl

KUALA LUMPUR: A hairstylist has been sentenced to death for the kidnap and murder of teenager Lai Ying Xin, whose body was burnt and dumped at a remote area in Kulai more than two years ago.

His two underage friends were ordered to be detained in a prison at the pleasure of the Johor Sultan for kidnapping and murdering their schoolmate.

Hairstylist Teh Kim Hong, 25, who knew Ying Xin, did not show any emotion when the verdict was delivered in a packed courtroom yesterday.

Ying Xin's mother Chia Siew Phen said she was pleased with the verdict.

Johor Baru High Court judge Justice Mohd Zawawi Salleh said the three accused did not show any mercy towards the victim.

“Although ransom was paid, the victim was brutally murdered.

“After she was killed, the victim's body was burnt and dumped in a remote area,” he said.

Justice Mohd Zawawi said the court took into account the torment suffered by Ying Xin and her family.

Ying Xin, 16, was kidnapped in front of a hypermarket in Jalan Kulai-Air Hitam, Johor, at 9.45pm on Sept 11, 2008. Teh and his two friends had wanted to get a ransom of RM60,000 from her family.

The three were charged with murdering Ying Xin in Jalan Alor Bukit Kulai between 9.45pm on Sept 11, 2008 and midnight the next day.

Justice Mohd Zawawi ordered the remaining RM22,800 ransom money, recovered during their arrest, to be returned to the victim's mother.

Ying Xin scored 7As in her PMR in 2007 and was described by friends as a good person.
