China's population rises to 1.37 billion

China's population rises to 1.37 billion

China's population has increased to 1.37 billion, including 1.3397 billion in the mainland, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Thursday.

The population figure for the mainland was 73.9 million more than that of 2000, when China conducted its fifth national census, according to data from the sixth census released by the NBS.

The data show an annual average population growth of 0.57 percent over the past decade (2000-2010) on the Chinese mainland, compared with the growth rate of 1.07 percent from 1990 to 2000, indicating population growth is slowing, said Ma Jiantang, director of the NBS.

Of the total population in the mainland, men accounted for 51.27 percent, while women made up 48.73 percent.

The Chinese mainland's population living in urban areas totalled 665.57 million, representing 49.68 percent of the total, up by 13.46 percentage points on the 2000 figure, while the population classified as rural population stood at 674.15 million, said the bureau.

The falling birth rate and increasing migrating population led to a declining number of 3.1 persons for each core household on average in the mainland, compared with 3.44 persons in 2000, according to the census data.

Meanwhile, the proportion of Han Chinese residing in the mainland had dropped to 91.51 percent, or 0.08 percentage points lower than that in 2000 when China conducted its previous national census.

The census data showed the growth rate of aging population in the Chinese mainland had increased with people aged 60 or above accounting for 13.26 percent, while juniors aged below 14 made up 16.6 of the mainland's total population.

The census data also showed that the illiteracy ratio in the mainland declined to 4.08 percent in 2010 from 6.72 percent in 2000.

To break down the census data by regions, Guangdong, Shandong, Henan, Sichuan and Jiangsu provinces were the top five largest populated regions on the Chinese mainland.

As the world's most populous country, China launched its month-long sixth national population census in its mainland from Nov 1 last year, mobilizing more than six million census takers to go door to door and visit over 400 million households across the country.

The population in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory stood at 7.10 million, 552,300 and 23.16 million respectively, according to figures provided by authorities in these regions.

Man who tried to rape 99yr old woman

A 24-year old man has pleaded guilty to the violent assault and attempted rape of a 99-year-old woman in her home in Melbourne, Australia.

Christopher Valle, 24, pleaded guilty to six charges including attempted rape, indecent assault and aggravated burglary.

The Victorian County Court heard the man knocked on the door of a house last September, less than an hour after being fired from nearby Caulfield racecourse.

After telling the 99-year-old owner he needed to check her property, he threw her on the bed and violently assaulted her before fleeing with cash and a credit card.

He was later arrested in Brisbane.

The court heard the woman pleaded with him and repeatedly told him she was nearly 100 years old.

In her victim impact statement the woman said she thought he was a nice young man when she let him into her home, and she still cannot understand why he did what he did.

Valle sat in court red-faced as the victim's daughter described his crime as an atrocity.

The daughter told the court the attack has taken an emotional toll on her mother's life.

Valle will be sentenced at a later date.

Teenager gang-raped after meeting Facebook pal

A 14-year-old girl who met a friend she knew through Facebook ended up being gang-raped by nine people.

Tamil Nesan reported that the teenager, who lives in a flat in Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur, slipped out to see the friend without her parents' knowledge last Saturday.

After they met up, they decided to go to someone's house in Cheras with another guy who drove them there.

Three men were waiting for them at the house.

One of them hugged and kissed the girl as she entered the house but she pushed him away. However, he forced himself on her and raped her.

Freak storm causes massive jams

KUALA LUMPUR: A freak storm uprooted several trees and caused traffic congestion in some parts of the city yesterday.

In Jalan 29/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, a huge tree damaged two cars and fallen trees on Jalan Setiakasih and Jalan Beringin caused a massive jam.

Five City Hall emergency unit officers took about an hour to clear the debris and the situation returned to normal by 6.30pm.

No one was hurt in the 4pm incident.

In Petaling Jaya, flash floods were reported at SK(T) Vivekananda in Jalan Templer and at the Rothmans roundabout.

A couple of classrooms at the school, as well as its front gate and field were affected.

A parent said floods are a perennial problem at the school whenever there is heavy rain.

A tweet was posted on @kltraffic on the flood and jam at the Rothmans roundabout at 5pm but the flood had receded by the time The Star sent a photographer to check on it.

Royal Wedding buzz hits locals
By LEE YEN MUN
yenmun@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians will be joining millions around the world to watch one royal bachelor taken off the market when Prince William exchanges “I dos” with Kate Middleton.

The live telecast from Westminster Abbey this evening will see many glued to their TVs to watch the much-anticipated event.

Some have gone to the extent of taking time off work so they could catch the wedding live ... while others regret that they will have to settle for re-runs.

Electrical engineer Raja Fernaliza Raja Harrin, in her 30s, said marriages excite her and that “William and Kate's takes the cake”.

Although she has a crush on the 29-year-old prince, writer Rachel Law, 22, agreed the couple made a compatible pair.

Like most wedding observers, Law is most looking forward to see the dress and accessories adorning the bride.

“They are both gorgeous, intelligent and have a caring heart.

“Kate has always appeared good in public and I love most of what she wears,” said Law, who is planning to catch a 7am rerun of the wedding with her mother.

Separately, an evening of grandeur awaits 550 guests of a closed-door party at the grand ballroom of a hotel here tonight in conjunction with the Royal Wedding.

Led by British High Commissioner Simon Featherstone and his wife Gail, guests will be treated to a buffet line as giant screens broadcast the wedding as it occurs in London.

The dinner is by admission of tickets of RM150 for adults or RM100 for children.

Proceeds from the dinner will be channelled to charities.

“Guests expected to be present include ambassadors, business partners, and members of the public comprising both locals and British citizens,” the official said.

Kate Hudson is engaged - Kate Hudson revealed on Matt Lauer's The Today Show that she is engaged to British rocker Matthew Bellamy

Kate Hudson is engaged

Kate Hudson revealed on Matt Lauer's The Today Show that she is engaged to British rocker Matthew Bellamy.

Kate Hudson will soon be Mrs. Bellamy.

The blonde hottie, who’s now carrying the child of Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy, decided to walk down the aisle for the second time with her current boyfriend Bellamy, reported People.

When she graced NBC’s The Today Show recently, it did not take long for host Matt Lauer to notice a ring she’ was wearing.

When asked about it, Hudson, the daughter of Oscar-winning actress Goldie Hawn, eventually confirmed the good news: "I'm engaged! It just happened a week ago. I'm so glad you noticed."

"I haven't really announced it. … I was waiting for someone to notice."

Just how did her man propose? The 32-year-old remained tight-lipped on that, merely gushing that, "It was very sweet. It was very romantic."

The pair has been going out for about a year and in a few months, will be welcoming their first child together.

Mark, 39 - who produced and starred in The Fighter - was reluctant to give much detail about the upcoming movie but revealed that it will be a drama and Justin won't be singing in it.

He told New York Magazine: "We're going to do something interesting. More of a drama. It's interesting, right? You want to know.

"I will not [be singing] and neither will he."

Superman plaque stolen

A plaque honouring The Man of Steel and the two friends who created the super hero character has been stolen by scrap metal thieves in Cleveland, Ohio in the US.

A historical marker was erected near a house where two high school classmates - Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster - created the Superman character in 1933.

According to the neighborhood's development authority , the Glenville Development Corporation, a hacksaw was used to remove the plaque from atop a pole two weeks ago.

The Plain Dealer newspaper quoted Tracey Kirksey, executive director of the corporation as saying that the aluminum marker may have been swiped because its colouring may have misled the culprits to think it was bronze, a popular target of scrap thieves.

The city installed the plaque eight years ago. Kirksey said the plaque would be replaced.

She said the original's misspelling of Jerry Siegel's name would also be corrected in the new marker.

Man lived with dead woman for a week

A California man was found living with the badly decomposed body of a woman after neighbors called to complain of an unusual smell coming from inside the man's studio apartment.

Santa Cruz police officers found the 30-year-old woman's body after entering the apartment . Investigators haven't been able to establish how the woman died because of the deteriorated state of her body, authorities said.

Investigators also haven't determined how long the woman had been dead, but Santa Cruz deputy police Chief Steve Clark said he was comfortable saying it had been at least a week.

The apartment's resident, 63-year-old John Clauer, was in custody on a no-bail parole hold based on a prior drug conviction, Clark said.

It wasn't clear if Clauer and the woman were sharing the apartment as roommates or if they were romantically involved. Investigators were questioning neighbors and canvassing the area to try to figure out the relationship between the two, Clark said.

"If it is indeed a homicide, then he becomes a suspect," Clark said. "He could also be charged with failure to report a death as appropriate."

Clauer has had what Clark described as a "storied history" with Santa Cruz police, having been arrested previously on drug and alcohol related offenses, though it wasn't clear how much time Clauer had served behind bars.

Clauer didn't have an attorney by Wednesday evening.

An autopsy was planned for later this week. The woman's name hasn't been released.

Teen model in train track suicide

Teen model in train track suicide

A stunning teenage model has died in a suspected suicide after falling under a train.

Blonde Gabby Joseph, 16, appeared to have everything to live for and had high hopes of becoming a top name in the fashion world.

But she was killed on Easter Monday when she was hit by a train after getting on the tracks about 150 yards from her local station at Briton Ferry, South Wales.

Cops are examining her Facebook account for her final messages. She had left one which has now been deleted. Another, believed to relate to her modelling, read: "In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different."

A friend said there was also a suggestion someone held a grudge. But the pal added: "Gabby would hate falling out with anyone because she was a happy person. We just don't know the truth yet."

Gabby, who was 5ft 4ins, lived with her mum Julie, a hairdresser, and father Kerry, 43. Gabby's aunt, Carolyn Gammon, said: "Gabby showed no signs of depression. We just don't know what happened.

"All we know is that she left a message on Facebook which has been deleted. We would urge any youngsters not to bottle things up and talk to people instead of going on websites."

Mum Julie, 41, said: "She was the most beautiful girl in the world, both inside and out. Nothing will take away the pain and devastation this has brought to us."

Gabby was a student at a sixth form college. Dozens of flowers from pals were yesterday left near to where she died.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious. A British Transport Police spokesman said: "A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Mum stabs her three kids to death - A mother in the United Kingdom who repeatedly stabbed her three children to death was sentenced to 16 years jail

Mum stabs her three kids to death

A mother in the United Kingdom who repeatedly stabbed her three children to death was sentenced to 16 years jail.

The Sun reported that Theresa Riggi, 47, killed her eight-year-old twins Austin and Luke and her five-year-old daughter Cecilia at their Edinburgh home.

The mother was afraid she would lose them in a bitter custody row.

The youngsters' bloodstained bodies were discovered with eight stab wounds and multiple abrasions and bruises.

The mother was found badly injured after plunging from a second-floor balcony in an apparent suicide bid.

She also had stab wounds which were believed to have been self-inflicted.

Initially, she was charged with murder, but last month she admitted three counts of the lesser charge of culpable homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Final touches for royal wedding

Final touches for royal wedding

A Royal carriage draws up at the entrance to Westminster Abbey during overnight dress rehearsal for the Royal Wedding of Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton, in central London, Wednesday.

New flags went up, cleaning crews scrubbed down, police checked for explosives and a handful of die-hard fans were already camping out. Welcome to Westminster Abbey, the ceremonial focus of Britain's royal wedding frenzy.

Scores of police carefully examined the large temporary media structures that have gone up near the venerable abbey in central London, which will offer standing room for the thousands of journalists expected to cover Friday's nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Police slid mini-cameras inside piles of scaffolding pipes to make sure no bombs were hidden.

To enhance security in the area, dozens of bailed anarchists - arrested in connection with alleged public order offenses during a chaotic protest against government cuts last month - have been barred from entering the Westminster area, for fear that they may cause trouble during the wedding, police said.

Workmen also delivered some surprising wedding floral decorations to the abbey. Instead of flowers, five men hoisted an 18-year-old potted maple tree inside. In all, six field maples and two hornbeams will form an "avenue of trees" lining the aisle leading up to the altar.
"These wonderful curved ceilings are supposed to reflect the branches of trees and that was what I thought of when I thought of having trees in the abbey," said florist Shane Connolly.

Streets in London were being sealed off so hundreds of troops from the city's Wellington and Hyde Park Barracks could participate in a pre-dawn dress rehearsal Wednesday morning involving those expected to line the procession route.

Scotland Yard's cavalry arm put its ceremonial division, known as the Grey Escort, through its paces Tuesday and the Band of the Royal Marines rehearsed.

Police plan to deploy around 5,000 officers to police the royal wedding procession, but Assistant Commissioner Lynne Owens appealed to the public Tuesday to be on guard amid fears that Irish or Islamist extremists could target the ceremony.

"We really need you to be our eyes and our ears," Owens said.

Tuesday was the last day the abbey was open to the public before closing for wedding rehearsals and preparations. Dozens of tourists milling around the ancient building were asked to pause for a moment of reflection as a public prayer was offered for the upcoming royal marriage.

"Today we pray for all couples preparing for marriage, especially today we pray for His Royal Highness Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton as they prepare for their great day on Friday," the Rev. Martin Hume said.

London has been bracing for a surge of visitors ahead of the wedding and on Tuesday those predictions were borne out, as the Tower of London recorded its highest weekly number of visitors in 12 years. London and Partners spokeswoman Jacqueline French said the city could expect some 600,000 tourists specifically there for the royal wedding.

In London and across the country, Britons were getting ready to mark Friday with royal wedding parties. At the prime minister's Downing Street residence, just down the road from Westminster Abbey, children were baking cupcakes in anticipation of a wedding-themed charity bash. The children, joined by Prime Minister David Cameron's wife Samantha, posed for pictures as they finished their cupcakes, which were topped with Union Jack flags and edible stickers of the royal couple.

Those who couldn't make it to London sent their regards. Sailors from the HMS Iron Duke, the frigate on which Prince William served in 2008, addressed a video message to the prince and his fiancee that carried "best wishes for their wedding day and future life together."

At a prime spot along the wedding procession route, John Loughrey of London, a 56-year-old self-described "super-fan" of the late Princess Diana, was already camped out.

Wearing a shirt with William and Middleton's photo and the words: "Diana would be proud," Loughrey predicted that Friday would "be a fabulous, fantastic day."

Guen Murray, 76, had camped out for the 1981 royal wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer and was ready to do so again for their son William. She staked a place outside the abbey with her two daughters beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Murray said the wedding was important to her because she "grew up during the war and learned to respect the royal family."

Weather forecasters have predicted a windy, cloudy and possibly wet Friday morning, but Murray didn't seem bothered.

Asked what she will do if it rains, she replied: "Well, get wet." - AP
