Penyanyi Izwan Pilus, 33, yang popular dengan lagu Indah Lelapku dan Kembali Senyum meninggal dunia pada pukul 6.15 petang ini di Hospital Ampang, Selangor.

Adiknya penyanyi Aril memaklumkan kematian abangnya melalui twitter miliknya petang ini. Alfatihah. Allahyarham meninggal dunia kerana jangkitan kuman dalam darah. Difahamkan Allahyarham jugakena jangkitan kencing tikus.

"Assalam, abang saya @izwanpilus baru sahaja menghembuskan nafasnya yg terakhir pada jam 6.15 pm." Demikian posting Aril dalam twitter miliknya.

Jenazah dimandikan di hospital dan akan dibawa pulang untuk disemadikan di Jasin, Melaka malam ini juga.

Jenazah akan dikebumikan diTanah Perkuburan Islam Kampung Palembang, Gubah, Jasin, Melaka pada pukul 11.00 pagi esok.

Izwan atau nama penuhnya Khairil Izwan Pilus mula mendapat perhatian selepas layak ke final Bintang RTM 2004. Walaupun tidak mendapat kejayaan, tapi dia mendapat banyak peluang di RTM dengan diasah bakat sebagai pengacara program hiburan di televisyen itu.

Pemilik Ijazah Sarjana Muda Pengurusan Pelancongan dari Universiti Utara Malaysia itu sering mendapat perhatian bila muncul dalam acara glamor kerana keberaniannya menggayakan fesyen yang pelik dan menyerlah.

Izwan sangat meminati penghibur Datuk Sudirman Hj. Arshad. Kreativiti fesyen yang sering digayakannya sedikit sebanyak mendapat ilham daripada gaya penghibur terkenal itu.

Pada 18 Januari lalu Allahyarham melalui akaun twitter miliknya mengadu tak sedap perut.

"xLena tido mlm td sbb perut bloated dek minum protiEn.. Huh!! So I need my sleep now!!!. Demikian catatannya.

Sementara itu penyanyi Ani Maiyuni dalam akaun facebook memberitahu dia dan Allahyarham menjayakan program Malar Segar (RTM) dan berduet lagu Kalau Bulan Bisa Ngomong minggu lalu.

November lalu Allahyarham dimasukkan ke hospital kerana demam panas berpanjangan. Dia juga disahkan menghidap jangkitan kuman dalam darah. Selepas mendapat rawatan, Allahyarham kembali cergas sehinggalah dua minggu kebelakangan ini kesihatannya kembali terganggu.

Menurut anggota keluarga, Allahyarham dimasukkan ke Hospital Ampang awal pagi ini selepas mengadu sesak nafas dan wajahnya kekuningan. Sebelah petangnya keadaannya semakin teruk.

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 JANUARI 2012: Penyanyi popular Khairul Izwan Pilus atau Izwan Pilus, 33 telah meninggal dunia pada jam 6.15 petang tadi di Hospital Ampang di sini, akibat jangkitan kencing tikus dan jangkitan kuman dalam darah atau Sepsis yang serius.

Bapa Allahyarham, Pilus Mohd Jani ketika dihubungi portal murai.com.my berkata, jenazah akan di bawa pulang ke Melaka pada malam ini juga untuk dikebumikan di Tanah Perkuburan Islam Kampung Pelembang, Gubah, Melaka sekitar jam 11 pagi esok.

Selain ayah Allahyarham, ibu dan adiknya Aril turut berada di hospital bagi memberikan penghormatan terakhir kepada anak kedua daripada empat orang adik-beradik itu.

Sementara itu, teman rapat Allahyarham, Norhadiani Baharom yang juga wartawan Harian Metro berkata, penyanyi berkenaan telah mengalami deman teruk dan dimasukan ke Hospital Pusrawi, Jalan Tun Razak hujung tahun lalu, bagaimanapun telah kembali pulih selepas mendapat rawatan.

Bagaimanapun, Allahyarham telah dimasukan ke Hospital Ampang pada tengah malam semalam apabila mendapati mata dan kulitnya berubah bewarna kuning.

Sekitar jam 3 petang tadi, Allahyarham seterusnya telah mendapat alat bantuan life support daripada pihak hospital kerana keadaannya yang semakin kritikal sehingga menghembuskan nafasnya yang terakhir.

Penyanyi yang popular dengan lagu Kembali Senyum itu, dilahirkan daripada program Bintang RTM pada 2004 dan juga pernah tercalon untuk Anugerah Bintang Popular 2006 dan menerima pencalonan pada Anugerah Industri Muzik ke-14.

Lebih mesra dengan panggilan Izwan, Wan atau Kutek dikalangan rakan dan teman artis, Allahyarham dilahirkan pada 24 November 1979 di Hospital Universiti, Kuala Lumpur.

Berbintang Sagitarius penyanyi berkenaan mendapat pendidikan di bidang Pengurusan Pelancongan berkelulusan ijazah sarjana muda daripada Universiti Utara Malaysia.

Setelah tamat Bintang RTM, Izwan yang meminati muzik berkonsepkan pop, r&b dan rock pernah hit dengan singlenya yang berjudul Kembali Senyum.

Sepanjang hayatnya, Allahyarham sangat dikenali sebagai seorang individu yang pemalu, bagaimanapun senang didekati, peramah,mesra, manja dan suka membantu orang lain.

Father charged with throwing baby on bed

A father who allegedly threw his baby boy from a height of 1.1m onto a bed, made his third appearance in court on Friday.

Francis Lim Kiat Hoe, 29, who was charged on Jan 7 with a rash act, also faces a second charge of threatening to throw the two-month-old baby down from a block of flats in Jurong, with intent to cause alarm and fear to his wife.

The alleged offences happened at around 9pm on Jan 5.

The case was adjourned to Feb 10 as the medical report on the baby is still not ready.

Crocodile swallows 10-year-old Indonesian girl

KUPANG, Indonesia (AFP) - A wild crocodile swallowed a 10-year-old girl while she played in a river with her father in eastern Indonesia, the second death in the same place in two months, a local official said on Friday.

The girl was swimming in Wailolong river on Thursday when the large crocodile suddenly appeared, swallowed her instantly and disappeared into the water, said Mr Viktor Mado Waton, Lembata district head in East Nusa Tenggara province.

'They only found the girl's clothes three hours after the incident, some 200m away from the attack site,' he said, adding that her family members were still trying to find the body.

'Her father saw this shocking scene as he was only 5m away in the water.' He said the father and the girl's teenage brother were hunting turtles in the river while she was playing.

(CHINA DAILY/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A two-year-old girl nicknamed Leilei lost two fingers of her left hand when her father, Wang Ai, bit them off while drunk, gog.com.cn, a news website based in Guizhou, reported on Tuesday.

Leilei received medical treatment for the hand and her cheek, which was also bit by her father, in Guiyang, South-west China's Guizhou province.

Wang Ai told the police after his arrest that he was drunk when Leilei started crying and scratching his face. That is when he bit her fingers and her cheek, he said.

Man jailed for stealing from mosque to buy food

A jobless man, who stole $32 from a mosque to feed himself and his mother, was jailed for a year on Thursday by a district court.

Noraizam Abdullah, 40, pleaded guilty last month and the court then ordered prison authorities to evaluate his suitability for corrective training and preventive detention. The prosecutor said that Noraizam had been committing theft since 1997 and had served six jail terms including a five-year stint of corrective training in 2002.

Although found suitable for corrective training and preventive detention, District Judge Siva Shanmugam said that because of the small amount of money stolen and that it was used to buy food, the court would impose an ordinary jail sentence.

Court documents state that he had gone to the Darussalam mosque at Commonwealth Avenue West on Dec 11 last year. At its entrance there was a donation box, which was locked and secured to a small table with a metal chain.

PLUS offers 10% toll discount for CNY

KUALA LUMPUR: Plus Expressways Berhad (PLUS) is offering toll rebate of 10% for users of PlusMiles and Touch n' Go cards in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

PLUS managing director Datuk Noorizah Abd Hamid, in a statement here Wednesday, said the users would enjoy the rebate on Thursday, Jan 23 and Friday Jan 27.

However, the offer is not applicable if payment is debited at the border toll plazas of Bukit Kayu Hitam, Penang Bridge, Tanjung Kupang and Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, she said.

She said the rebate can be claimed at the company's customer service centres when topping up the electronic cards between March 1 and May 31.

Noorizah said the toll rebate was another strategy by PLUS to encourage users to switch to the electronic payment system, which is easier and faster.

Besides that, she said, the rebate can clear the traffic and encourage users to travel outside the peak hours.

Noorizah said PLUS expected the traffic volume to increase 30% to 1.4 million cars every day during the upcoming Chinese New Year festive period. Chinese New Year falls on Monday. - Bernama

'Tsunami miracle baby’ not afraid of the sea which almost took her life

GEORGE TOWN: “Tsunami miracle baby” S. Thulasi goes out swimming in the sea a few times a week – since her father taught her swimming early this year.

The bubbly and active seven-year-old shows no signs of fearing the sea, which almost claimed her life on the day the tsunami hit on Dec 26, 2004.

Thulasi was only 22 days old when she was found sound asleep on a floating mattress after giant waves hit her father’s seaside food outlet on Miami Beach in Tanjung Bungah, here.

“I go out to the sea to swim with my cousin a few times a week after my father taught me how to swim early this year,” Thulasi said at a thanksgiving and prayer ceremony organised by her father A. Suppiah at the beach yesterday.

Saying a little prayer: Thulasi offering her prayers to the departed souls during the thanksgiving and prayer ceremony at Miami Beach in Tanjung Bungah in conjunction with the tsunami anniversary yesterday.

Besides being thankful for his daughter’s life, Suppiah and his family have also been holding the annual prayer, known as the atma shanti pooja, to keep the departed souls claimed by the disaster in peace.

“We will never forget the tragedy but we are moving on with our lives and we are also proud of Thulasi as she is doing well in school,” he said after the prayer.

Thulasi’s sister Kanchana, 19, said foreign tourists who dropped by the family’s food outlet would ask her about the “miracle mattress baby”.

“I set up a Facebook fan page, ‘The tsunami miracle baby Thulasi’, with photos of my sister so that people can follow her progress in life,” she said.

In Kota Kuala Muda, near Sungai Petani, fisherman Md Hafidzi Ismail, 44, who lost two of his daughters – Nur Hafizatul Fatihah, five, and Nur Hafizatul Fasehah, 11 months – in the tragedy, said he has overcome his sorrow.

“The birth of my daughter Nur Hafizatul Fitrah on Oct 5, 2005 and my son Mohd Hafiz Fikri on May 24 last year have reduced the pain of losing my two girls.

“I want to put the tragedy behind me and concentrate on my family to give them the best I can,” he said at his house in Kampung Tradisi Keda.

Another fisherman, Adnan Bakar, 58, recalled how he held on to a guava tree that was eventually uprooted after being swept away by strong waves.

“I then grabbed a coconut tree and that’s when I heard a woman and two young children screaming for help from a house nearby,” he said, adding that he later managed to help them.

Floods force more than 2,000 folk in Kuching, Samarahan and Sibu out of their homes

KUCHING: Continuous heavy rain coupled with king tides between 6m and 6.2m high have forced more than 2,000 people out of their homes here, in Samarahan and Sibu.

The bad weather, which started since Saturday and continued till yesterday, have inundated some low-lying areas with 1m of floodwater.

According to the State Ops Room, some villagers from Sadong Jaya area had to move out of their homes around 7pm on Christmas due to rising floodwater.

As of yesterday afternoon, officials said about 1,500 people involving 374 families from six villages in Sadong Jaya and Asajaya, Samarahan division, had been evacuated to five relief centres.

As at 6pm, Kota Samarahan police chief ASP Abdul Rahman Ahmad said 143 families involving 576 people had been placed at the Asajaya Sports Complex, 195 families (729 people) at SK Kelali, 12 families (30 people) at SK Terasi and 24 families (163 people) at Surau Rengawan.

The relief centre at Dewan Kampung Pelanduk had also been activated, he added.

In Sibu, the State Ops Room said more than 500 people from 121 families from four longhouses near Sungai Arip, Ulu Balingian were evacuated around 3am yesterday after it rained nonstop for two days.

Several low-lying areas in Kuching such as Samariang Batu, Kampung Beradik and Kampung Tengah Sungai Batu Kawah were also flooded, forcing more than 200 people out of their homes.

A State Ops Room official said the Malaysia Meteorological Department had issued an Orange stage warning, saying heavy rain would last until this evening and might cause floods in low-lying areas, particularly here and in Bau.

The department had also issued a Yellow stage or heavy rain advisory, saying that Lundu, Samarahan, Asajaya, Serian, Simunjan, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Betong, Saratok, Sarikei, Bintangor, Pakan, Julau, Mukah, Dalat, Matu and Daro would still be experiencing intermittent rain today.

World's oldest dog dies in Japan at the age of 26

UTSUNOMIYA (YOMIURI SHIMBUN/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - The world's oldest dog has died in Sakura, Tochigi Prefecture, at the age of 26 years eight months - equivalent to 125 human years, his owner said.

Pusuke, certified by Guiness World Records as the world's oldest living dog last year, died on Monday at his home, owner Yumiko Shinohara said. Pusuke is believed to have died of old age.

The dog was born at the home of one of Shinohara's relatives in March 1985 and was registered as a pet on Apr 1 that year. In 2008, he suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car. A vet told Shinohara it would be difficult to save Pusuke's life, but the dog underwent successful surgery.

In Dec 2010, Pusuke was certified by Guiness World Records as the world's oldest living dog, breaking the previous longevity record of 21 years three months.

The two actors attended the ‘2011 My Astro On Demand’ and bagged top awards

Held in Malaysia last night, the 2011 My Astro On Demand saw the attendance of a number of up-and-coming TVB artistes, including Kevin Cheng, Michael Tse, Raymond Lam, Bosco Wong, Ron Ng, Kate Tsui, Tavia Yeung, Myolie Wu and Sharon Chan.

Kevin bagged the My Favourite Actor in a Leading Role award for his role in drama Ghetto Justice; Myolie won the My Favourite Actress in a Leading Role award for her role in Curse of the Royal Harem.

These two prizes were the most coveted awards of the night because they were seen as an indicator to who the winner might be at the upcoming TVB Anniversary Awards, to be held next Monday.

During his acceptance speech, Kevin said, "Someone asked, if I get this award, I wouldn't get the one at TVB. I feel conflicted. Will I get the [TVB] award?"

The audience shouted 'Yes' in reply, showing their support for the actor. Kevin added, "I've a peace of mind now. I shall take the opportunity to say more, because I don't have much chance [to do so]."

Later, a teary-eyed Myolie accepted her award. Fellow actor Raymond embarrassed her when he shouted "Bosco".

The actress said, "He asked me not to thank him in public", sparking roars of laughter. However, Myolie did look in Bosco's direction and thanked him, winning thunderous applause.

The Malaysian channel Astro Wah Lai Toi held their My AOD Favourite Awards Presentation 2011 yesterday. The show will be broadcast on December 3rd on AOD. The 'My Favorite TV Best Actor and Actress' awards went to Kevin Cheng and Myolie Wu. Michael Tse and Fala Chen shared the 'My Favorite TV On-Screen Couple' award and Wayne Lai just got one of the 15 presented 'My Favorite TV Character' awards.

The results for the Astro TVB awards had always been very close to the TVB Anniversary Awards results. However last year Moses Chan and Charmaine Sheh broke the tradition on the 'My Favorite TV Best Actor and Actress' awards. This year, it is uncertain if it would be happiness or sadness for Kevin Cheng and Myolie Wu at the TVB Anniversary Awards.

A hot favorite for TV Queen this year, Myolie Wu appeared in a see-through flowered dress to the awards presentation. Since the other TV Queen hot favorite, Fala Chen, was absent from the event due to work and Myolie wasn't nominated for her role in Ghetto Justice, but for her grand production Curse of the Royal Harem, so Myolie appeared quite domineering.

When Myolie received her award, she became very emotional. Raymond Lam, who was sitting in the audience, took the lead to start shouting Myolie's rumored boyfriend Bosco Wong's English name, causing her some embarrassment. Myolie said: "Thank you Tommy Leung for not giving up on me over the last 10 years. It is him (Bosco) that told me to not thank him, but I will still thank him!" Bosco just brought up how Myolie teased he had a short tongue at the TVB Anniversary Gala: "I told her not to mention it again!"

Depending on Ghetto Justice, Kevin Cheng was crowned Astro's TV King, he frankly said: "Someone asked me, taking this award, means that I won't get the TVB award. I feel really contradictory right now, then am I going to get it or not? (The audience cheered loudly 'Yes!') Then I feel better now, I need to take advatange of this time and speak more because I won't have too many chances."

Sharon Chan, won 'My Favorite TV Supporting Actress' for her role in Ghetto Justice. When she accepted the award, she was crying emotionally and pointed her award up to the sky saying the award is for her father. As for Fala Chen, she was absent from the awards presentation, but the event organizers made arrangements for a "Malaysian Fala Chen", who is actually the Miss Malaysia winner (Lim Jia Bing) to present the 'My Favorite TV On-Screen Couple Award' to Michael Tse.

Also, although Raymond Lam, Tavia Yeung and Ruco Chan didn't pocket any big awards, but yesterday morning when they arrived in Kuala Lumpur, they got a large group of fans waiting at the airport to pick them up. Compared to the other TVB Siu Sang and FaDans that came with them, the three were more popular. Ruco mentioned his late grandmother is a from Malaysia and is surprised seeing his rise in popularity.

'A Simple Life' wins 3 major awards

A Simple Life won three major prizes at the 48th Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan.

The tear-jerking Hong Kong movie swept the awards for Best Director (Ann Hui), Best Leading Actor (Andy Lau) and Best Leading Actress (Deanie Ip).

It is based on a true story about a young man taking care of his family servant, who suffered a stroke.

The artistes and director were all surprised by the results of the movie, which failed to catch the eyes of investors at the beginning.

"I'm very excited to have this award. In fact, it was a gift at the very beginning," said Ann at the award presentation ceremony on Saturday.

Andy said: "To be honest, I am very surprised. Thanks to the judges, I don't know what to say."

The 63-year-old Deanie attributed her win to Ann and Andy for giving her the opportunity to participate in the film.

A Simple Life was also nominated for the Best Feature Film award, but lost to Taiwan's Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale.

The 4-1/2-hour epic film is based on a true story about the Seediq aboriginal tribe, which launched an armed uprising against the Japanese occupation in 1930.

"I am very happy to be standing here," said director Wei Te-sheng.

He thanked the film's investors - and at US$25mil (RM80mil), it's one of the most expensive ever film in Taiwan.

The Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale also won four other the prizes – Best Supporting Actor (Bokeh Kosang), Best Original Film Score (Ricky Ho), Best Sound Effects (Tu Duu-chih, Tang Hsiang-chu and Wu Shu-yao) and the Audience Choice Award.

The Golden Horse Awards was launched in 1962. It is one of Asia's most-prominent film events and focuses specifically on Chinese-language movies.

The other winners of 2011 Golden Horse Awards are:

Teen electrocuted in freak accident in Bali

Talk about a holiday gone wrong...

Jake Flannery, an Australian teen holidaying in Bali, died instantly after touching a a live wire and a neon sign.

Friends who were travelling with Jake, tried to revive him but were unsuccessful.

Flannery's saddened friends plan to cut short their Bali break and head straight back to Australia.

"We’re holding up as best we can," said one.

"He was just a fantastic guy. He was really good academically, in creative arts and at sport as well _ he was a very good hockey player."

Flannery's mother said, "I've been so stressed out about him going out there. But I really wasn't stressed about this (happening). This wasn't what I was worried about. You don't think about something as simple as leaning on a pole. You can't imagine it happening in Australia like that.

(CHINA DAILY/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A senior college student has built a tablet PC from a 500-yuan (S$102.70) secondhand laptop for his girlfriend.

Wei Xinlong and his girlfriend Sun Shasha, both from rural areas, are seniors in the Art & Design Department at Northeast Normal University in Changchun, capital of Jilin province.

The weight and thickness of the gadget, which resembles an iPad and took Mr Wei 10 days and 800 yuan, is like a 400-colour-page book. 'One can read, download, watch movies, play games by just touching the screen,' Mr Wei explained.

Mr Wei said he did not have enough money to buy Sun a new computer, so he started building one by studying Internet video programs on how to make tablet PCs. 'The main board, video card, CPU and screen were all from the old laptop, but I bought the touch screen and battery online,' Mr Wei said.

42-year-old dies while watching SEA Games football final

YAN (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A man died while watching the SEA Games football final between Malaysia and Indonesia in a restaurant in Guar Chempedak.

Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, 42, died of a heart attack while being rushed to the Yan district hospital at 11pm.

Restaurant helper Hasli Ishak, 29, said Ahmad Fauzi often patronised the place to watch football matches. Meanwhile, Ahmad Fauzi's sister-in-law Nafishah Jusoh, 46, said she was informed of his death by his brother-in-law in Kuala Lumpur.

'Fauzi never misses the chance to watch football matches. He told me that he would go to hospital immediately after the match but he died before seeing the team win.' Nafishah said Ahmad Fauzi, the youngest of four siblings, suffered from hypertension and diabetes.

YAN: Three died and two were injured in an accident that occurred at Batu 13 Jalan Alor Setar Sungai Petani near Bukit Besar here at 2.45am Saturday.

Two of the victims were identified as Ooi In Too, 47, from Simpang 3 Sungai Daun and Eiew Eng Khoon, 29, from Kampung Sungai Limau Luar while the third victim, a pedestrian could not be identified as there was no document on his body.

The injured were two Myanmar nationals identified as Lee Pa Mei, 30,and Man Shut Kyi, 31.

Yan OCPD Deputy Supt Ismail Abu said Ooi and Eiew were travelling in a Proton Satria car with Lee and Man when they were involved in an accident with the unidentified man.

DSP Ismail said the three men died at the scene due to severe injuries while the women, both pregnant, were transferred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital and were reported to be in critical conditions.

He urged those who had witnessed the accident to come forward or contact Yan police station at 04-4655222.

BEHRANG: Four people will forever be remembered as good Samaritans who died trying to rescue their friends trapped in a bus that skidded and keeled over when a sand-laden trailer ploughed into it in a gruesome accident along the North-South Expressway.

The four are SMK Air Merah Form Three students Khairul Anwar Azhan and Maysarra Zaidi, both 15, their teacher Siti Hajar Mohamad, 33, and Kampung Alor Teja Wanita Umno branch chief Basarah Saad, 45.

The students and teacher were on their way from Kulim to Kuala Lumpur when their bus overturned. It was then rammed by the trailer at the 382nd kilometre of the North-South Expressway, 100m from the rest area here, at about 4.20am yesterday.

Khairul, Maysarra and Siti had crawled out and were doing their best to pull the others out.

Basarah, who was on another bus, had got off the vehicle to help the teachers and students in the overturned bus when the trailer rammed into it. The trailer which hit Khairul, Maysarra, Siti and Basarah also overturned.

Siti was decapitated and lost her leg while Maysarra was buried in the sand. Rescue personnel pulled out Maysarra's body out of the sand six hours later, but that, too, by accident they were looking for Siti's leg.

Tanjung Malim acting OCPD Supt Md Tahir Kasim said the bus involved in the accident was carrying 36 students and three teachers.

“There were two drivers on board. Initial investigations showed that the driver at the wheel lost control of the bus after one of the front tyres burst.

“The bus swung to the left and overturned. While attempts were being made to get the students and the teachers out, a trailer hit the stationary bus from behind,” he said.

Supt Md Tahir said the drivers of the bus and trailer escaped with slight injuries.

“A total of 22 victims received outpatient treatment at the Slim River Hospital.

“Seven other passengers suffered serious injuries,” he said. Of the seven, students Mohd Azim Dahlan, Mohd Faizal Anuar, Mohd Sariffuddin, all 15, and teacher Azriah Hani, 31, were warded at the Slim River Hospital.

Those warded at the Teluk Intan Hospital were Abdul Rahman Danial Abdul Ghani, 15, teacher Rosilawati Mat Rifim, 40, and her son Idzmi Haikal Khairul Shah, five.

Azriah Hani said the group had left Kulim at 11.30pm on Thursday on what was supposed to be a three-day trip to Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands.

Penang-born Kimberley Ann Estrop-Leggett took home the title Miss Universe Malaysia last night.

The 18-year-old beauty beat eight other hopefuls at the gala finale held in Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre here.

“I don't think you can define what a Malaysian looks like. I think I represent the 1Malaysia concept,” said Leggett, who is of British-Dutch descent.
Leggett, who has deferred her studies to participate in the competition, hopes to pursue her education in business and economics.

She was one of the 19 contestants that were selected from over a thousand participants in auditions held across the country.

She is expected to compete in the Miss Universe pageant next year.

The judges for the finale included ex-beauty queen Datin Josephine Fonseka, fashion designer Amir Luqman, model management icon Andrew Tan, fashion guru Gillian Hung, and fashion designers Stephanie Kay and Bill Keith.

The MTV Europe Music Awards turned into a celebration of Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga last night as the two picked up a number of top prizes, including best male and best female act.
Gaga, striking in several outfits throughout the evening, also won for best song and best video for Born This Way. Bieber picked up best pop act as well.

Their live performances captured the differences between the two ascendant mega-stars: the teenage Bieber, wholesome and almost impossibly cute; Gaga challenging and aggressively sexual in her approach.

Other awards went to Bruno Mars, Eminem and Katy Perry while the band Queen received the "Global Icon" award, in effect a lifetime achievement award to the now-graying rockers, who closed the show with a spirited set of their classics, including We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions.

The show also included a video tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, who died earlier this year in London.

But the evening was dominated by Bieber and Gaga, the two crowd favourites.
The casually dressed Bieber said modestly that he had voted for competitor Kanye West and thanked his fans and family for his first award.
"Never say never, right?" he said, waving his trophy in the air.

After he won his second award, for best pop act, he praised his fans for staying with him despite "a lot of crap on the Internet," an apparent reference to unsupported allegations that he had fathered a child after a brief liaison.

Bieber took the stage a few minutes after Gaga accepted her award in characteristic style.
"Thank you so much, I love you so much. I'm so grateful. I'm really smiling right now, but I know you can't tell," said Gaga, wearing a bizarre silver dress with an oversize tilted hat that completely covered her face except for tiny holes that allowed her to see. She joked that she had had a lot of Botox treatment.

Gaga, who has enjoyed a year of spectacular commercial success, triumphed over a strong field that included a resurgent Jennifer Lopez, Adele, Katy Perry and Beyonce.

Miss Venezuela, Ivian Sarcos, was crowned Miss World 2011 during a spectacular event that took place in Earls Court Two in London, England, on November 6th. Sarcos had been a favorite for the title since her arrival and became the 6th winner of the Miss World crown for her country, Venezuela.

The 1st runner-up was also top bet Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Ruais. Ruais is the first winner under new national directorship in the country, headed by Cory Quirino. The 2nd runner-up was Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Vilanova.

KUALA LUMPUR: An 80-year-old woman savagely attacked her three-year-old grandchild with a meat cleaver in a fit of anger before falling to her death from a nearby apartment block.

Police are investigating the motive behind the 11.15am attack at the family’s terrace house in Bandar Baru Ampang yesterday.

The day had started like any other Sunday for a 40-year-old mother of two who was getting ready to send her eldest son, 10, for tuition.

Her husband was asleep.

As she was leaving, she turned to tell her mother-in-law that there was no need to cook as she would be buying food.

The older woman suddenly grabbed the cleaver and started attacking the toddler.

The child’s mother screamed when she saw blood gushing out of her daughter’s head.

According to her police report, upon hearing her screams, her mother-in-law ran out of the house.

Her body was later found on the ground of an apartment building near the family’s home.

Police believe she had jumped to her death. The family rushed the injured girl to Hospital Ampang.

She was then transferred to Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Amiruddin Jamaluddin said the girl’s condition had stabilised.

“We are still trying to figure out the reason behind this attack,” he said yesterday.

Police have opened two investigation papers for this case – under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing injuries with a weapon and sudden death.

Girl brings toddler to school

Unrelenting media attention has brought hope and also a lot of disturbance to a 10-year-old Chinese girl struggling through a difficult life.

Long Zhanghuan won widespread sympathy after a photo went online showing her carrying her two-year-old cousin to school.

Long and her five-year-old brother - from Haoyou village in Central China's Hunan province - have been living with their grandparents since their parents divorced five years ago.

Her father has custody but has not been home for three years.

The grandparents are raising eight of their grandchildren, all left behind by parents seeking jobs in other places.

Long's grandfather Long Wanting, 59, is suffering from a long-term illness and her 54-year-old grandmother's workload is too demanding.

Throughout the week, reporters from newspapers, magazines and TV from across the country have been flocking to her school, said Wu Yansheng - principal of Shanjiang Primary School.

"Initially I wanted more people to know about students in similar difficulties, but it quickly got too aggressive for the girl and I had to cancel further visits.

"She is too young and inexperienced to deal with such enormous media exposure. She broke down in tears after repeated interviews," he said.

Long's hardship as a left-behind child is very common in Fenghuang county, where 52.4% of the 46,207 primary and secondary school students are facing the same fate.

The children often take on the role of an adult at home, doing housework and taking care of smaller siblings, whom they sometimes bring to school to ease the burden on adults.

Although the media exposure has disrupted Long's normal life, it brought her unexpected help from philanthropists.

Last week, a charity group arrived and donated 30 pairs of shoes to kids in disadvantaged households, including Long.

According to the group, a philanthropist offered to donate 2,000 yuan (RM982) a month for five years to Long’s family so they could hire a helper and ease the children's burden.

Wanting was grateful for the offer and thanked the media for exposing their plight. - China Daily

Hospital throws away newborn by mistake

A hospital in South China's Guangdong province hs mistakenly diagnosed a premature baby as stillborn and threw him away.

The issue has stoked public anger and stirred a new round of debate regarding the country's hospital management system.

Liu Dongmei, 22, gave birth to a baby boy in the 32nd week of her pregnancy with the help of two nurses at Nanhai Red Cross Hospital in Foshan Oct 26.

The baby was believed to be not breathing or crying and the skin had turned purple.

The nurses assumed he was dead, wrapped him in a plastic bag and discarded him in a restroom but Liu's family rushed to the hospital 30 minutes later to find that the baby was still alive.

Huang Lichuan, director of the hospital’s department of obstetrics and gynecology, confessed that the nurses had mistakenly diagnosed the stillbirth due to a shortage of experience.

Wang Haizhang, Liu's husband, said they called the doctor on duty many times that night but no one came to help them.

Hospital authorities explained that the doctor on duty was treating a patient who was suffering from a massive haemorrhage at the time.

Local health authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The obstetrical director, doctor on duty at the time of the incident and the nurses have been suspended from duty.

Those who were responsible for the accident failed to follow proper procedure during the birth that a doctor must be present, said Pan Yongtong - standing deputy director of the health department of the Nanhai district.

The fact that the nurses did not report the supposed stillbirth to the doctor on duty before disposing of the baby is also part of the problem, Pan said. - Xinhua

Man fattens wife with steroids

A man wanted his wife to stay at home and look after the children.

Dalwara Singh , who lives in the United Kingdom, secretly put steroids into her food and drink so that she would get fat, reports the Press Trust Of India.

This caused the man's wife to sprout hair on her face and back.

The steroids also made her skin itchy and spotty.

When the wife said she needed a doctor, Singh told her it was nothing to worry about.

He was found out after several weeks, when their teenage daughter heard him grinding a pestle and mortar in the bedroom.

Steroids were then discovered in a locked cupboard .

At the Leicester Crown Court , Singh admitted administering a poison or noxious substance with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy.

Iman Kerigo, Miss Norway And A Native Of Kenya, Visits The United States

Iman Kerigo, the first woman of African descent to be crowned Miss Norway, arrives in the US this week as part of her goodwill tour. Miss Kerigo, a refugee from Kenya who fled with her family to safety in the United Kingdom, continues her mission to raise awareness on poverty, war and domestic abuse. She will be visiting Los Angeles, Las Vegas and surrounding areas as part of her twelve day visit.

As a child born into a life of extreme hardship forged by her family’s struggle in war torn Kenya, she and her mother struggled to survive day-to-day while living under the rule of an abusive father. Iman’s mother’s greatest dream was to simply see her children live. She never dreamed her second child could achieve something so amazing.

“My mother was just happy that we were alive but she didn’t want us to live a meager existence,” Miss Kerigo said. “Being crowned Miss Norway gave me the opportunity to make sure that her dream came true.”

After waiting for some time to gain citizenship in a new country, Iman, her mother and siblings were finally accepted under refugee status to the Scandanavian country of Norway. Growing up thousands of miles away from everything she had ever known, Iman worked hard to adjust to her new adopted home, even learning to speak Norweigan and English, rather than her native Swahili.

Through hard work and dedication, she overcame tremendous odds to eventually become the first woman of African descent to ever be crowned Miss Norway. She credits much of her success in the Miss Norway Pageant to her coach, nutrition expert David Sandoval. David, author of The Green Foods Bible, had Iman follow his ‘Superfoods For Supermodels’ program, an eating program designed especially for those in the public eye.

David says, “I created this program in response to the epidemic of bulimia, anorexia and other eating disorders prevalent in the modeling and entertainment business.” But David is keen to explain that ‘Superfoods For Supermodels’ is not a diet. He adds, “Instead it features realistic guidelines for creating exceptionally healthy, lean, beautiful bodies through pure, organic, green food nutrition and core fitness.” David’s program also helps to build confidence and strength while focusing on taking personal responsibility for one’s own destiny.

Iman adds,”Part of my mission is to let young girls know that even if it seems all the odds are against you, you can still achieve great things.”

MANILA (AFP) - The father of Philippine pop star Charice has been stabbed to death with an ice pick in a drunken street fight, police said on Tuesday, as the singer cancelled an overseas tour to be with her family.

Construction worker Ricky Pempengco, 39, was stabbed repeatedly late on Monday after an altercation with another drinker in a street in an agricultural town south of Manila, police said.

'They bumped into each other and from there, they got into a fight,' said local police chief Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz. Police are still searching for the suspect in the killing, he added.

The 19-year-old singer, famous under her first name, mourned her father in a post on Twitter and said they had been close until her parents separated when she was a young child, and the children stayed with their mother.

The couple were rumoured to have spent US$20mil (RM61.27mil) on the wedding in Hong Kong.

Half of the money, around US$10mil (RM30.64mil), was spent on six-star hotel accommodations and air tickets for 300 friends and relatives from all around the world.

Around US$3mil (RM9.2mil) was spent on private jets to fly international superstars, including Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez, to the Special Administrative Region.

The couple's wedding rings are worth nearly US$3mil, reported mayday.com.

Other expenditures include payments to a PR company preparing the wedding, Coco's wedding dresses and jewellery.

The couple, however, refused to comment on the rumours nor reveal the amount spent on the wedding.

Their two-day wedding celebrations started on Thursday evening when the couple held a Jewish ceremony at a hotel, as Rockowitz is a Jewish descent.

A banquet was held after that and Coco sang a song she wrote for the billionaire husband.

At an interview earlier, the singer said she was quite nervous, as it would be the first time she performed the song I Just Wanna Marry U.

"I wrote it pretty fast, 10-over hours, because it is about the story of me and Bruce," she said.

Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys and Ne-Yo were also invited to perform at the ceremony.

The couple held another banquet at Shaw Studios in Tseung Kwan O on Friday.

They will fly to Dimakya Island of Philippines for their Honeymoon. This island is where Coco arranged a surprise birthday party for Rockowitz three years ago.

Rockowitz, 53, was voted one of the Top 50 CEOs worldwide by a US magazine.

He went to Hong Kong alone when he was 19, becoming a tennis coach and later ventured into business.

He is now the CEO of Li & Fung Group, and has other businesses.

Rockowitz has two daughters from his previous marriage.

A five-year-old girl won the second prize at a photography contest in the United States.

The competition was organised by The Friends of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.

Jessica Lee followed her father, William to a national park in March, as he wanted to take some photographs for the competition.

While waiting for her father to take his shots, the girl played with her camera and snapped some shots too.

Back home, William found some nice shots from his daughter in the camera and decided to send them in for her.

He was just trying his luck, not expecting the little girl to actually get a prize.

Looks like Full House 2 is going ahead with recasting, rather than working out conflicts with previously cast leads Noh Min-woo and Hwang Jung-eum. Now Min Hyo-rin (Sunny, Romance Town) is a leading contender for the female lead, according to reps who confirmed that she received the offer and is considering it.

Also, we finally get the teeniest detail about the plot of the sequel: Full House 2 follows the romance between a poor but plucky aspiring reporter and a top star, who get caught up in a fake engagement. So, pretty much a copy of the original, where Song Hye-gyo was an aspiring internet novelist/screenwriter, and Rain a top star, and the two actually got contract-hitched in a supposed marriage of convenience that really wasn’t all that convenient.

Although, I’ll be impressed if they reverse the roles this time and make the hero the poor, plucky writer and the heroine the top star. Why do I have the feeling that’s not gonna happen?

Plot unoriginality aside, I actually think this could be a good move for Min Hyo-rin, who’s been climbing in visibility as an actress. For a long while she was pretty much a CF and photo-shoot fixture without making much headway in her singing career; she’s still got ad contracts everywhere, but now her career’s really picking up as well. She scored with the hit movie Sunny, as well as a second-lead role in Romance Town. (Her debut drama, Triple, wasn’t much of a success although I still think it helped her more than not, since she had nothing to lose.)

Interesting that Full House 2 is already scheduled to air in Japan on channel TBS next March, while it still lacks a timeslot in Korea.

JOHOR BARU: A 32-year-old businessman who was supposed to be married next month was found dead in a pool of blood in his bathroom in Taman Pelangi Indah here.

The body of Chua Yong Chuan was discovered at about 8.30am yesterday by his mother who had gone to check whether he was awake.

His throat and wrist were slit.

Chua's future father-in-law, who only wanted to be known as Choo, said that they were supposed to meet at 9am yesterday to go over the wedding plans.

“He was supposed to marry my youngest daughter next month and both families had arranged to meet,” he told reporters here.

Choo said he last saw Chua on Tuesday and noticed that he looked unusually tired.

“He was a quiet man and respectful.

“He would always greet us whenever he came to our house to pick up my daughter,” he said.

Chua's fiancee and family were too distraught to speak to reporters when met at the Sultan Ismail Hospital mortuary here.

Meanwhile, Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaakob said that the case had been classified as sudden death and ruled out foul play.

He said the deceased had slit his wrist and throat with a kitchen knife.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists can have their driving licence expiry dates synchronised with their birthdays from mid-November.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, who announced this yesterday, said the Cabinet had approved the move.

“In the past, there were many cases of motorists only realising their driving licences had expired when they were stopped by the police or after getting into an accident.

“Now they have no excuse to forget the expiry date anymore,” said Kong at a press conference at Wisma MCA yesterday.

Under the new initiative, motorists whose licences expire after mid-November will be able to extend the validity to cover the period in between their licence expiry date and their date of birth.

For example, if their licence expires in December 2011 and their birthday is in July, a one-year renewal of their licence will give them a new licence that is valid for a year and seven months, from December 2011 until July 2013.

After that, they will be required to renew their licence in July.

Under the initiative, motorists whose birth dates are less than six months away from the expiry date of their licences will not be charged for the extra period of validity.

However, motorists who have birth dates that are the same or more than six months from the expiry date of their licence, will be charged a maximum fee of six months.

About 20,000 motorists who were born on Feb 29 will have their driving licences synchronised to March 1.

“No one will lose out in this initiative as we plan to implement this exercise over a period of six years.

“So, even those who have renewed their licences for five years will still be eligible,” Kong said.

He said the fees for driving licences remained unchanged, adding that currently there were about 10 million active driving licence holders.

The Transport Ministry estimates the exercise will cost the Government RM70mil in uncollected revenue.

Kong also stressed that this did not mean that all motorists should rush to renew their licences in November as it was an ongoing exercise until all driving licences in Malaysia were synchronised.

He said the ministry would announce the exact date of implementation soon.

Chinese man kills woman because he 'wanted to die'

(CHINA DAILY/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to death, suspended for two years, for the murder of an elderly woman - a crime he says he committed because he wanted to die.

Pei, as he was identified by police, was born in 1990 to a poor family in Hebei province. Detectives say he killed his victim in a village in Qingdao, Shandong province, on April 11, and was detained five days later. On his capture, he said he planned the crime so that a court would sentence him to death.

Investigations found Pei went to Shandong to work as a migrant worker when he was 18 years old and had little contact with his parents, who divorced in 2008 and paid him no attention.

VIENNA (AFP) - An Austrian man was saved from tragedy in the early hours of Friday morning after his cats woke him up by repeatedly walking over his face as he slept, police said.

When the 37-year-old from Hohenems in the western state of Vorarlberg finally came to, he smelled burning and discovered the blaze in his flat.

After failing to put out the flames with an extinguisher he called the fire brigade at 3.30am.

The man was unharmed but his living room furniture was almost completely destroyed.

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Regaining consciousness, a 10-year-old girl clawed her way out of the ground and pointed her parents and the authorities to the cousin who raped her, knocked her out with a blow to the head and buried her in a shallow grave, the police said on Thursday.

Inspector Roberto Ocumen, chief of police in the town of Magpet, said the girl told investigators she was raped, then hit with a hard object on the head and buried alive by her cousin Dennis Quilaton, 21, on Sunday.

Mr Ocumen said the girl regained consciousness underground and crawled out of the freshly dug grave.

She managed to reach home through the help of some neighbours and told her parents about her ordeal.

That is how the parents of three- year-old Daniel Jacob decided that he would be Singapore's youngest solid-organ donor, allowing doctors to transplant all his usable organs after a drowning accident left him brain-dead.

Daniel's kidneys have since been given to an 11-year-old girl whose kidneys have failed, apparently due to a congenital kidney disease.

His corneas went to two different adults. One had an ulcer on the cornea, leaving him close to losing his sight.

Di pengujung Agustus lalu, syuting sinetron Putri Yang Ditukar (PYD) serentak dilakukan di 4 lokasi berbeda (Yogyakarta, Bali, Singapura, dan Hong Kong). Sistem syuting seperti ini termasuk baru untuk sebuah sinetron stripping.

Selain menggebrak lewat proses syuting serentak di 4 tempat, sinetron besutan rumah produksi SinemArt ini sukses mengukir rekor baru sebagai sinetron stripping pertama yang tayang dalam durasi 3 jam. Menurut Abdul Aziz, Manager Humas dan Promosi SinemArt, syuting di empat tempat berjauhan ini sebetulnya tak merepotkan asalkan telah dipersiapkan dengan matang. Sebelum berangkat, tim PYD pun sudah memilik stok beberapa episode. Nah, setelah itu, kaset hasil syuting di empat tempat setiap hari didistribusikan ke kantor SinemArt-Jakarta untuk diproses atau disatukan menjadi sebuah episode utuh. "Di tiap tempat ada seorang runner yang tugasnya bolak-balik membawa kaset," ujar Aziz.

Syuting serentak di 4 tempat ini, kata Azis, bukan untuk "gagah-gagah-an", tetapi memang mengikuti jalan-nya cerita, sebab tokoh Amira (Nikita Willy) diculik dan di empat tempat itulah diperkirakan ia berada. "Selama ini kami syuting di Jakarta dan untuk episode kali ini dibikin real di 4 tempat yang dimaksud," masih kata Azis.

Di samping itu, dengan gambar yang berbeda, SinemArt ingin me-manjakan mata pemirsa setia PyD. "Empat tempat tadi dipilih kare-na jadi tempat wisata yang terkenal buat masyarakat. Ada sesuatu yang refresh lah buat pemirsa," imbuh Azis sambil mengatakan, tak ada kerjasa-ma promosi dengan 4 lokasi syuting tadi. "Malah kami mempromosikan mereka."

Pisah Rombongan

Di hari pemberangkatan, artis dan kru PyD dipecah menjadi empat tim. Atalarik Syach, Nikita Willy, Rezky Aditya, Anna Pinem, dan sutradara Gita Asmara termasuk dalam rombongan Hong Kong. Glenn Aiinskie, Jasmine Wildblood, Marini Zumarnis, Sultan Djorgie, dan Bobby Joseph ke Singapura. Lucky dan Tsania Marwa ke Yogyakarta, sedangkan Rioniado Stockhorst dan Citra Kirana ke Bali.

Karena cerita mengerucut ke Hong Kong, sejumlah pmeain di lokasi lain pada akhirnya menyusul ke Hong Kong. Scene di Hong Kong memang paling banyak. Beberapa aktor asing dari Hong Kong dan Singapura juga dilibatkan. Adegan laga pun tak sedikit disisipkan.

Kata Aziz yang mengikuti rombongan ke Hong Kong, jadwal syuting padat dan cukup menguras tenaga. "Kami kerja dari pagi sampai malam. Tak seperti syuting di Jakarta, perpindahan lokasi ke mana-mana dilakukan dengan berjalan kaki dan harus cepat, sesuai jadwal. Terlebih musim panas dan sebagaian berpuasa. Masing-masing ditun-tut untuk mandiri."

Lantaran lokasi syuting dilakukan di sejumlah tempat wisata. seperti Victoria Park dan Avenue of Stars (Hong Kong), kru dan artis masih sempat cuci mata atau berbe-lanja di sela-sela istirahat syuting. Adapun kendala, di awal syuting kru dan artis sempat kesulitan mencari makanan yang cocok dan halal, apalagi untuk sahur. Untunglah TKW yang bekerja di Hong Kong bisa menyediakan katering buat mereka.

Menurut Anna Pinem, pemeran Surti, syuting di Hong Kong jadi selingan seru bagi kru dan pemain si-netron yang telah memasuki episode 600 lebih ini. Meski capek, Anna merasa senang. "Suasananya beda aja. Dan saya, kan, baru pertama kali ke Hong Kong," akunya. Ken-dati jadwal syuting padat, mereka masih diberi kesempatan beberapa jam untuk menikmati Hong Kong. Alhasil, "Saya punya banyak tempelan kulkas dan gunting kuku," seru Anna menyebut cindremata sebagai oleh-oleh dari Hong Kong.

Bridgette Jordan, 22, from Sandoval, Illinois,also holds the record for shortest living siblings with her 20 year-old brother Brad.

Standing at a comparatively lofty 96.5cm, Brad lists his hobbies as basketball, karate and gymnastics.

Music-lover Bridgette likes to stay active and often spends time dancing and cheerleading.

A beggar with cars and properties

A man, who often seen begging for money on the streets of Bejing in China, has been found to be richer than anyone can imagine.

He has four cars and several properties in Beijing, Jiangxi Satellite TV reported in its morning news on Tuesday.

The news has immediately captured the attention of the netizens, who conducted a search on the beggar's identity.

According to the news report, the man is living in the China's capital with a mother and two sons.

"His mother wears a lot of gold jewellery, and his sons use branded stuff from head to toe," the TV station claimed.

"He is richer than those who gave him money," a netizen said.

The man is often seen on the streets of Xidan district.

He would kowtow to everyone who walked pass him, asking them for money and thus gained his nickname "Xidan Kowtow King".

A netizen, however, sympathised with the beggar, saying he was not wrong, by law, just lack of moral.

Some said they would not give him money anymore.

The Singapore Grand Prix is set to get an added dose of star power.

Marina Bay Sands (MBS) announced Wednesday that it will play host to newly-crowned Miss Universe 2011 - Leila Lopes from Angola - along with nine other beauties from the pageant.

Lopes' appearance at MBS will be one of her first public appearances as Miss Universe 2011, following her recent victory in Brazil last week.

The entire Miss Universe entourage will be making special appearances at meet-and-greet sessions at the Finish Line Bar, allowing fans to snap a quick shot with the ladies at these dates:

Swedish surgeons have managed to reattach a woman's face after a horrific dog attack — using hundreds of LEECHES.

The woman had a huge chunk of her face bitten off when she was mauled by her pet.

The horrific wound spanned from her upper lip all the way to her eye.

As she was rushed to hospital her relatives managed to keep hold of the torn off skin and keep it chilled.

Doctors at Skane Hospital, in Malmo, southern Sweden, then reattached the flesh with the help of 358 leeches.

Surgeon Stina Klasson said: "The most important thing was to get blood into the torn-off body part, which we managed to do within an hour of the start of the operation."

The leeches were used to force blood to flow through into the damaged skin.

Ms Klasson added: "The grower who supplies the hospital with leeches ran out, so more had to be flown in from the UK."

During the complicated op — which lasted 15 hours — medics repaired the woman's lip, nose and parts of her cheek.

Doctors said the operation was successful, but the Swedish woman, who has not been named, will continue to need reconstructive surgery in the future.

Fellow surgeon Jens Larsson added: "The results appear to be good. Her whole nose has survived. The patient can breathe, eat and talk." - www.thesun.co.uk

Seven starving dogs in Indonesia apparently ate their owner when he returned home from a two-week holiday in his hometown in Manado last Wednesday. His body parts were discovered only on Monday.

A neighbourhood guard was curious when he saw luggage lined up at the front of Andre Lumboga's house, days after the 50-year old returned home. He approached the house, smelled something foul and called the police, Reuters reported.

"His skull was found in the kitchen, and his body was found in the front of his house," Eriyana, a local police chief in Batam, an island off Sumatra, told VIVAnews website.

Lumboga arrived home last Wednesday, but his body was discovered on Monday.

"We suspect that the dogs were hungry, so they attacked Andre, because they had not been fed for 14 days," he said. Police also found bones of two other dogs, believed to have also been eaten by the hungry canines.

Lumboga was from northern Sulawesi island, a predominantly Christian area, where the local spicy diet is famous for including dogs, bats and forest rats.

Hurricane Irene shut down New York and menaced other cities as it steamed up the US eastern seaboard, knocking out power to two million homes and businesses.

New York City's normally bustling streets were eerily quiet after authorities ordered tens of thousands of residents to evacuate low-lying areas and shut down its subways, airports and buses.

Those who had to travel were left trying to flag down yellow taxis that patrolled largely deserted streets.

Irene, which is still 800km wide hurricane, was enveloping towns and cities in the northeast, hugging the Atlantic coast and threatening floods and surging tides.

With winds of 130 km/h, it is a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale.

From the Carolinas to Maine, tens of millions of people were in the path of Irene, which howled ashore in North Carolina Saturday, dumping torrential rain, felling trees and knocking out power.

After moving across North Carolina with less punch than expected but still threatening, the hurricane re-emerged over inshore waters on its route northward, hugging the coast.

At least nine deaths were reported in North Carolina, Virginia and Florida. Several million people were under evacuation orders on the east coast.

The deaths included two children, an 11-year-old boy in Virginia killed when a tree crashed through his roof and a North Carolina child who died in a road crash.

Four other people were killed by falling trees or tree limbs - two in separate Virginia incidents, one in North Carolina and one in Maryland.

Woman in intensive care after liposuction

A diabetic woman has spent at least three days in intensive care, after emergency surgery to remove part of her intestines damaged in a liposuction procedure that apparently went wrong.

The 60-year-old is now believed to be on the mend.

The Straits Times understands that she underwent the fat-removal procedure on her abdomen last Friday at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), but still felt pain in the operation site two days later.

BACKGROUND STORY

Rules on liposuction

A patient must observe a seven-day 'cooling-off' period before each procedure so they can think through their decision to undergo it.
A patient must wait at least two weeks between two consecutive liposuction sessions.
Each repeat procedure on a patient must be performed in a surgical centre or hospital, and be treated as a separate procedure.
All staff involved must be trained in basic cardiac life support, and doctors in advanced cardiac life support. At least one registered nurse trained in sedation must be stationed in the recovery area.
Doctors must conduct peer reviews on liposuction procedures at least once every six months. These meetings are for them to come together to discuss each other's liposuction cases.
Doctors doing such peer reviews must be accredited by the Accreditation Committee of Liposuction under the Ministry of Health or be authorised to do liposuction in surgical centres or hospitals.
Sources said a scan on Sunday showed traumatic injury to her intestines.

Mister Brasil finalist is murdered in São Paulo

Murilo Rezende, Mister Piauí 2011 and one of the favorite candidates to win the Mister Brazil 2011 pageant (he finished in 6th place), was brutally murdered in an apartment in São Paulo. The police is still investigating, but it looks like the murder killed both Murilo and the apartment owner (Eugenio Bozola) to rob them. Eugenio’s car was also taken.

Apparently, Murilo was at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Murilo, a model at 40 Graus modeling agency, in Rio de Janeiro, had a promising career. Her had already been on the cover of several magazines and fashion editorials in Brazil and abroad.

During the week he participated in Mister Brazil, the boy from Minas Gerais who represented Piauí was well liked by all other contestants. He was always smiling, never got into gossip, and got along with the candidates as well as the pageant organizers and staff.

Carmen Fusquine, the chaperone who took care of Murilo’s group during the national pageant, said: “He was very polite, shy, a man of few words. Murilo was sweet, disciplined, kind. He will be missed”.

Lucas Malvacini, the winner of Mister Brazil 2011 (in the picture on the right, with Murilo), also commented: “I still cannot believe. I’ve known Murilo for a while, he was very kind, a good friend. I pray for his soul and hope for justice”.

Murilo’s murder has not been found yet.

Petty Officer Jon Tumilson, 35, killed in the major U.S. helicopter crash in Afghanistan this month, was remembered by around 1,500 mourners.

But it was his Labrador retriever Hawkeye that really captured the public’s emotions in the photo taken by Mr Tumilson’s cousin, Lisa Pembleton.

Mr Tumilson, of San Diego, California, was one of 38 killed on August 6 when a rocket-propelled grenade took out a U.S. Chinook helicopter.

SEREMBAN: A man who walked into a service centre near here on the pretext of servicing his Perodua Myvi shocked patrons and the outlet owner when he drove away another customer's newly-serviced BMW.

However, he was arrested the next morning while attempting to drive the car out of a parking lot outside a row of shophouses near his home in Sikamat near here.

Police also seized two other vehicles parked near the rented home of the suspect a Mitsubishi Triton and a Kia Spectra. The Myvi was also reported stolen earlier.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, in his early 40s, had gone on a spree, stealing several other cars including Honda, Toyota and Nissan models from service centres and workshops, state police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Osman Salleh said.

“The thefts were reported in the Klang Valley in recent weeks. Investigations reveal this is a one-man show,” he told reporters yesterday.

He added that the suspect, who was from Perak but did odd jobs in Kuala Lumpur, had been jailed twice for criminal offences.

He had been renting the house here for the past three months.

“His modus operandi was simple. He would observe happenings at a particular workshop or service centre, coolly walk in and just drive the car away,” he said, adding that there was a possibility that the stolen cars might have been cannibalised and sold to spare part dealers.

SAC Osman advised those who had bought cars below the market value to notify the nearest police station as they might be driving stolen vehicles.

Those found driving such vehicles can be charged with having stolen property.

Four wealthy Russians cheered a gang rape like "professional footballers celebrating the scoring of a goal" a judge said Tuesday as he jailed them for a total of 36 years.

Oleg Ivanov and Gregory Andreev Melnikov, both 23, Norayr Davtyan, 22, and Armen Simonyan, 19, filmed the sickening attack on an 18-year-old Malaysian fellow student at their £30,000 a year boarding school using an iPhone.

unanimously convicted the 'minigarchs' of rape after viewing the video, during which one of them labelled the victim a 'machine for f***ing', while another had to ask her name.

Ringleader Davtyan, who maintained that the 18-year-old Malaysian teen was a "slut" in the witness box, was jailed for 10 years, Melnikov for nine years and Ivanov and Simonyan for eight years apiece at Woolwich Crown Court this afternoon.

In the course of the 'disgusting' attack they egged each other on by saying: "You're not going to marry her."

They later showed the iPhone footage of their victim's ordeal to friends at their exclusive college in south London.

Judge Peter Murphy said: "The iPhone footage shows what can only be described as a callous disregard for the victim as a human being and indeed as anything other than an object of their own pleasure.

"Although there was no pre-existing plan, once the sequence of events started, they were encouraging each other to do more and more and were clearly seen on the iPhone celebrating their triumph almost in the manner of professional footballers celebrating the scoring of a goal.

"They also boasted that they would show the footage to anyone in Moscow.

"(The victim) in my judgment certainly is heard to utter the word 'no' on a number of occasions. Whatever the case of her condition, it is clear as I think it must have been to the defendants that she was in no position to decide whether to consent or not to consent, or to resist what was going on.

"No-one who has seen that footage can leave this trial without feeling complete disgust towards it."

On the night of January 21 this year, the college put on a disco for its students, while Davtyan also held an impromptu party in his room.

The victim went to the room between 7pm and 8pm and downed a shot of whiskey before going back to the main building.

She thought her drink had been spiked and felt dizzy.

CCTV cameras captured her stumbling though the main entrance before later filming her in an outdoor smoking area talking to Ivanov and Melnikov.

She was later seen walking away from the smoking area with Melnikov when she was taken to the party in Davtyan's room.

Once there she was seen to vomit and lie down on the floor, and as the party wound down she was eventually left alone with the four men.
Video footage recovered from Davtyan's iPhone taken between 12.38am and 3.10am then showed all four men raping the girl.

'At one point Mr Ivanov said he felt pity for her, but this was only after he and the others had sex with her,' prosecutor Peter Clement said.
'He was talked out of that attitude by Mr Davtyan who described [the girl] as just a whore and a machine for f******'.'

The footage also showed that the rapists took regular breaks to go outside for cigarettes.

Ivanov, Melnikov, Davtyan, Simonyan, all of Deptford, South-East London, all denied two counts of rape.

In their evidence, they tried to claim that the sex had been consensual.

The jury of seven men and four women unanimously convicted Davtyan of two counts of rape.

They convicted Melnikov of one count of rape but found him not guilty of the other, instead finding him guilty of an alternative charge of attempted rape.

Ivanov and Simonyan were both convicted of one rape count and acquitted of the second.-

Facebook has revealed huge changes to its privacy settings so users can have more control over what is shown on their page.

Pictures and comments posted online will now have their own dropdown menu so users can select who can view them.

People will also be able to approve pictures they are 'tagged' in before they appear on their profile.

Facebook said the feature — called Pending Post — was the number one request from users.

It means people can stop themselves being 'tagged' by other people in embarrassing situations.

The social networking site has previously come under fire for its privacy settings, with critics saying the system was too complicated.

A spokeswoman for Facebook said the introduction of new controls was about making privacy "simple and easy to use".

She added: "We have taken it out from behind the scenes and put it right next to the posts and photos.

"It is simpler and more intuitive, rather than taking several clicks to get to."

Geographic locations can also be added in all versions of Facebook, not just the mobile phone application, on an opt-in basis.

Users will also be able to see how others view their profile and change who can see their status updates after they have posted them.

People will be prompted to take a tour walking them through these new features from their homepage.

Facebook's vice president of product Chris Cox said: "We're always trying to improve, always doing user testing and always feeding in to improve the controls on who can see your content.

"The new dropdown menu will be expanding over time to include smaller groups of people you may want to share with, like co-workers, friend lists you've created, and groups you're a member of.

"This will make it easy to quickly select exactly the audience you want for any post."

The enraged wife was arrested on Tuesday in a suburb of the capital Kuala Lumpur, after her husband filed a police report, local district police chief Abdul Rahim Abdullah told AFP.

The victim was found and freed a few hours later. Mr Abdul Rahim said the husband was speaking with his lover on the phone last week when he suddenly heard his wife get on the line.

'According to investigations, the wife and her brother had found the man's mistress and made him listen while the two tortured and beat up the mistress before hanging up,' he told AFP. He declined to give any details on the people involved in the case.

It happened in a split second.

One owner had unleashed her silky terrier while waiting to take part in a ball-throwing event for dogs, while another had unmuzzled his rottweiler so it could drink water.

Then the 40kg rottweiler snapped at the 4.3kg silky terrier, killing it almost instantly. The events leading up to the fatal incident took place so quickly that no one saw clearly what happened.

The incident happened on Sunday at the annual national dog walk at East Coast Park. On Monday, owners of the two dogs blamed each other for the death of three-year-old female silky terrier Honey.

Six years ago, researchers found that cancers affecting white blood cells appeared to respond to certain 'psychotropic' drugs.

These included weight loss pills, Prozac-type antidepressants, and amphetamine derivatives such as MDMA - commonly known as ecstasy.

BEIJING (AFP) - A Chinese manufacturer has been faking the production date on its food to make it appear fresher than it really is, state media said on Thursday, in the latest safety scare to hit China's food industry.

The Douqule Food Factory used chemicals to erase the production date from packaging before printing a new, later one, making stale foods appear fresh, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Authorities only discovered the scam after two female employees who burned their hands using paint thinner to change the date printed on the packaging sued the company for compensation, the report said.

'Many people - from big enterprises to small vendors - know very well that the shelf life of foods could be changed (that way),' a food packaging machine maker in Beijing told the agency.

Cynthia Franklin told a jury on Wednesday that Jessica Beagley was punishing the boy for lying about getting in trouble in school. Ms Franklin also says Beagley made the boy stand naked in a cold shower for getting in trouble.

Beagley is charged with misdemeanour child abuse. Her lawyer says she was not being cruel when punishing her son, but was desperate to address difficult behaviour.

The man, only known by the surname Kim, was with his naval serviceman friend near a convenience store at Busan on Sunday.

The two got involved with an argument with a passerby named Park for an unknown reason. When the quarrel became tense, Kim threw his umbrella at the pedestrian.

However, the umbrella hit his friend in the eye instead. Although the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, he was declared dead on Tuesday.

The adult male penguin, nicknamed 'Happy Feet', was found wandering on a beach near the capital in June and taken to the zoo to recuperate when he became ill after eating sand and sticks.

With the bird, only the second Emperor penguin ever recorded in New Zealand, restored to full health, zoo chief executive Karen Fifield said plans had been finalised to ship him back to the Southern Ocean.

Ms Fifield said the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) ship Tangaroa would set sail from Wellington on August 29 with the penguin aboard. The ship, which will carry out research into Southern Ocean fisheries, will release the bird four days into the voyage near Campbell Island, which is within the normal feeding range of Emperor penguins.

BEIJING (CHINA POST/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A Chinese man organised 49 giant dancing carrots to propose to his apparently embarrassed girlfriend at a shopping square in the north-eastern city of Qingdao, reports said on Thursday.

An online video of the event showed the man, identified by the surname Pang, emerge from one carrot suit to confirm his carefully choreographed proposal to a giggling Zhao Lu.

The human carrots had performed a popular song from a television dating program, while the hidden Mr Pang spoke through a microphone to tell Ms Zhao how he fell in love with her when they met six months earlier.

'Are you angry with me?' Mr Pang, a finance worker, asked Ms Zhao as he took off his fabric carrot head. Some of the dozens of onlookers shouted "Marry him! Marry him!' to Ms Zhao, whose favourite color is orange, but it was not clear if she accepted Mr Pang's proposal.

The 30-year-old actress, married since 2008, has starred in Little Fockers, Valentine's Day, The Love Guru and Fantastic Four. Her first daughter Honor was born in June 2008.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A man in the state of Louisiana is accused of bludgeoning, decapitating and dismembering his disabled 7-year-old son and leaving the boy's head near the street so the child's mother would see it - a killing that brought seasoned police officers to tears, authorities said on Monday.

Jeremiah Lee Wright, 30, waived his right to an attorney and confessed to killing Jori Lirette within 30 minutes of being brought to the police station on Sunday, Police Chief Scott Silverii said. He said Wright was booked with first-degree murder and held in lieu of US$5 million (about S$6 million) bond.

He was in isolation, Mr Silverii said during a Monday afternoon news conference. The department spokesman, Detective Ricky Ross, said he does not believe Wright has an attorney.

Flowers, balloons and stuffed animals were left on Monday outside the house where Jori died.

Top scorers get chance to study medicine

KUALA LUMPUR: Twin sisters Aimee Teong Chuin Ai and Charlotte Teong Chuin Yi have been offered seats to study finance and economics from several top universities in Britain, Hong Kong and Singapore.

However, the two top STPM achievers had to decline because all they wanted to do was to study medicine at Universiti Malaya (UM).

The dreams of the 20-year-old twins finally came true when MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong presented them with the offer letters during a ceremony at Wisma MCA yesterday.

Dr Wee said the sisters had selected medicine, dentistry and actuarial science as their top three choices.

Initially, elder sister Aimee obtained the offer to study actuarial science at UM while Charlotte was offered the same course at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

At last: Dr Wee Ka Siong and twin sisters Aimee and Charlotte holding up their offer letters from UM at the ceremony at Wisma MCA yesterday.

“However, after giving much consideration to the courses available, both of them realised that they wanted to pursue their favourite subject of medicine,” he said after a press conference here yesterday.

Dr Wee said the two approached the MCA education bureau and hoped it could help them obtain places to study medicine at UM.

“The MCA central committee agreed that the party should provide assistance to the sisters as they are the country's top scorers and should remain here.

“It is also in line with the Prime Minister's call to encourage talent to remain and serve in the country,” he said.

He said the party managed to submit their cases through MCA central committee member Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung, who was also Deputy Higher Education Minister, to minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Noordin.

The ministry agreed to offer both of them places to study medicine at UM.

Aimee said she did not feel sad when she had to decline the offers from overseas universities.

She added that it was her dream to study medicine at UM.

Sister Charlotte said she was thankful for the help rendered to them by MCA.

“I have faith in our education system,” she added.

A female student in the United Kingdom sleeps up to two months at a time, every seven months, reported The Sun.

Lily Clarke suffers from the rare Kleine-Levin Syndrome.

She slept through exams, Christmas and New Year.

Lily’s mother Adele, 47, said she is missing out on a big chunk of her life.

Liliy's curious condition began in 2007 after the family went for food after an ice-skating session.

She said, "Before the food arrived Lily had fallen asleep in her chair. We couldn't wake her and had to carry her from the restaurant."

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for the syndrome but medics believe it affects young people - so Lily may grow out of it.

Lily is woken just long enough to be fed at her parents' home in Surrey.

Lin Dan downs Chong Wei to win world title

LONDON: Lin Dan defeated Lee Chong Wei 20-22, 21-14, 23-21 after a hard-fought 81 minutes to win the men’s singles title in the World Badminton Championships here on Sunday.

Chong Wei won the first set 22-20 in 26 minutes against Lin Dan. But the Chinese ace forced the rubber after winning the second set 21-14, also in 26 minutes.

The rubber was closely fought but Lin Dan prevailed 23-21.

Earlier, China's Wang Xiaoli-Yu Wang beat compatriots Tian Qing-Zhao Yunlei 22-20, 21-11 to win the women's doubles title.

Saya pilih nama ini sebab saya sangat kagum dengan ketaatan Uwais kepada ibunya. Bahkan, Rasulullah S.A.W pernah memberitahu yang doa Uwais dimakbulkan oleh Allah kerana ketaatannya itu,” cerita Sarah yang kini hamil enam bulan

Berkongi pengalaman kehamilan pertamanya itu, Sarah memberitahu dia tidak mengalami alahan yang terlalu teruk. Cuma dalam tempoh tiga bulan pertama dia banyak mengambil supplemen untuk mendapat khasiat yang diperlukan tubuh badan. Malah, sepanjang tempoh berpuasa ini, baru sehari dia tidak berpuasa. Itu pun kerana perlu menjalani pemeriksaan kesihatan. Dalam masa yang sama, dia juga tidak mengidam benda yang pelik-pelik.

Berkongsi pengalaman berpuasa sebagai seorang isteri, Sarah mengakui yang dia tidak susah menjaga makan minum suaminya. Ini kerana suaminya itu bukan seorang yang memilih makanan.

“Shuib akan makan apa sahaja yang Sarah masak. Dia tidak memilih. Masakan yang ringkas-ringkas pun dia akan makan. Untuk bulan puasa ini, kami selalu berbuka di rumah sahaja. Kalau ada jemputan berbuka barulah berbuka di luar. Untuk sahur pula, saya memang selalu masak lebih. Jadi bila bangun pagi nanti, saya hanya panaskan apa yang ada. Semuanya ringkas sahaja,” ujar Sarah.

Sementara itu, Sarah juga sempat memberitahu yang dia dan Shuib baru sahaja selesai merakamkan lagu duet berjudul “Cinta Itu Nyawa” yang digubah oleh Aidit Alfian. Lagu yang ditulis oleh Ad Samad itu menceritakan kisah percintaannya dengan Shuib sebelum ini.

“Ikut perancangan, lagu ini akan dilancarkan selepas Raya nanti. Sebenarnya kami pun tidak sangka akan rakamkan lagu ini untuk pendengar. Pada mulanya, kami hanya mahu buat untuk perkahwinan tempoh hari sahaja. Tapi, selepas Abang Aidit kata Shuib boleh menyanyi, kami fikir apa salahnya untuk mencuba. Kalau dapat sambutan yang baik, mungkin ada lagi projek duet daripada kami,” ulas Sarah ceria.

Veteran Bollywood actor Shammi Kapoor, 79, dies after few years in dialysis

MUMBAI: Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor(pic), who ruled the late 1950s and 1960s with his unique style and versatile range, passed away early Sunday at the Breach Candy Hospital here, The Times of India quoted family sources as saying.

He was 79. He is survived by his wife Neela Devi, son Aditya Raj and daughter Kanchan Desai.

He had told the media a few years ago that he was on dialysis three times a week.

He was admitted to the ICU of the hospital on Saturday, The Times of India reported.

The actor was part of Bollywood's legendary Kapoor family. His father was film and theatre actor Prithviraj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor were his brothers.

He made his debut in Bollywood in 1953 with the film 'Jeevan Jyoti' and carved a niche for himself with the superhit Junglee' in 1961.

Shammi Kapoor won the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1968 for his performance in 'Brahmachari'.

London riots: Man charged with robbing Asyraf

A man has been charged with robbing a Malaysian student who fell victim to thieves pretending to help him during the riots in London, the Telegraph reported Saturday.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said Reece Donovan, of Milton Court, Cross Road, Chadwell Heath, Romford, Essex, had been charged with robbing Asyraf Haziq Rossli, the Telegraph reported.

Asyraf, 20, who won a scholarship to the UK to study accountancy, was rushed to hospital with a broken jaw on Monday after being set upon during London's riots less than a month after arriving in Britain.

Asyraf, who was discharged from hospital on Friday said he harboured no grudges

The attack prompted widespread anger after police said hooded youths initially pretended to help Asyraf before allegedly going through his backpack, stealing his mobile phone and wallet, in Barking, east London, on Monday night.

The incident was captured in footage recorded on a mobile phone and posted on the video website YouTube.

The footage came to define the depths stooped to by those who wreaked havoc on the capital's streets.

Asyraf was discharged from hospital on Friday and, at a press conference, said he harboured no grudges.

Student charged with killing principal

A 17-year-old student charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of a school principal in the US, told investigators that he did so because he did not like her.

Eduardo Marmolejo said he had planned to stab Suzette York, 48 on the third day of classes, when he knew he would be alone with her in a classroom.

Marmolejo was charged with killing the principal on Wednesday at Memphis Junior Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist school of about 100 students in Memphis, Tennessee.

State law allows police to release the names of juveniles charged with first-degree murder.

The killing shocked current and former students of the school which is located next to a church and a cemetery in a residential section of east Memphis.

Students described York as a caring person who taught science and math before becoming principal in 2008.

Her body was found lying in a pool of blood by a teacher at about 11:20am on Wednesday.

Then, he started dating Xiao Jun and proposed to her in front of his children recently. They got married on Tuesday.

Xiao Bin Bin was the most popular child star in the 1980s, in Taiwan, Hong Kong and countries with a large population of Chinese.

The 40-episode Star Knows My Heart tells the stories of a mother, who put up her five children for adoption after her husband died in a car crash and she was diagnosed with cancer, with Xiao Bin Bin playing the role of the youngest child.

And now, his eldest son Xiao Xiao Bin, six, has also become a popular child star after making a guest appearance on the remake of Star Knows My Heart in 2007.

Kelvin Borbidge, 22, and Daniel Knox-Hewson, 23, who are friends drew inspiration from their mutual love of science fiction, comic books and gaming.

Yes, their new names are a mouthful.

Borbidge will now be known as Baron Venom Balrog Sabretooth Vader Megatron Vegeta Robotnik Magneto Bison Sephiroth Lex Luthor Skeletor Joker Grind.

Knox-Hewson on the other hand, is Emperor Spiderman Gandalf Wolverine Skywalker Optimus Prime Goku Sonic Xavier Ryu Cloud Superman HeMan Batman Thrash.

"We decided to change our names because we were bored of our day-to-day lives and wanted to do something that reflected our true personalities," enthused Emperor Thrash.

Baron Grind added: "The look on my area manager's face when he asked why my till now said 'Baron' was priceless.

"At this moment in time, I am looking forward to changing my name on my bank card. I wonder how they will fit it all on?"

The pair spent just £10 (RM49) each to acquire their new names through the Legal Deed Poll service, Sky News reports.

It is one of those rare moments when the wizards from Hogwarts outdo the vampires at a popularity-based award show.

At the 2011 Teen Choice Awards, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 beat The Twilight Saga: Eclipse to be voted as Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movie, while franchise star Emma Watson beat Twilight’s Kristen Stewart to be selected as Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy actress.

As if that’s not enough to cause grief for Twi-hards, Watson and co-star Daniel Radcliffe even beat Stewart and her beau Robert Pattinson in the kissing department, taking home the award for Choice Liplock.

Meanwhile, Harry Potter baddie Tom Felton continued sweeping the Best Villain awards, being named as Choice Villain for his portrayal as the conflicted Draco Malfoy in the fantasy series.

A ballet dancer who hails from Suzhou, China, was crowned as this year’s Miss Hong Kong.

Rebecca Zhu, 23, beat 13 other contestants to land the coveted title at the annual beauty pageant held by Hong Kong’s leading television station, Television Broadcasts (TVB).

The 1.68 metre beauty, who moved to Hong Kong seven years ago, was also voted as Miss Internet Popularity.

Hyman Chu, a 23-year-old program host in Canada, and Whitney Hui, 22, were named first and second runners-up, respectively.

Hui, a student from Britain, also clinched the award of Miss Photogenic, while Miss International Goodwill went to Nicole Leung.

Seven die in Cameron landslide

The landslide that hit the kampung in Cameron Highlands.

Seven people, including a family of three, died after their homes at Kampung Sungai Ruil in Cameron Highlands were swept away by landslide.

Two others were seriously injured in the 5.50pm incident on Sunday, which saw victims being buried under 50m of mud.

They are now being treated at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh.

While the first victim was pulled out at 6.15pm, the last victim was uncovered at 1.21am Monday.

Following that, the search and rescue opeations had been called off.

Prior to the incident, there was a downpour in the area.

The incident caused three houses in the village to be buried while another three were partially submerged.

The Pahang state government had ordered the immediate evacuation of 577 people as their houses had been classified as unstable.

Villagers had gathered at the Hospital Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom mortuary early in the morning to claim the victims remains.
On Sunday, rescue efforts were hampered by the mud.

Assisted by two excavators and a backhoe, rescue works were temporarily disrupted as authorities are not sure where the victims are located.
Dogs from the canine unit had to be called in to help determine the exact location of the victims.

Cameron Highlands MP Datuk S.K. Devamany, who was at the scene, said this was the first time incident of such magnitude hit the village.

“While it is normal to have landslides in Cameron, it is however the first time landslide of such a scale to hit the village,” he said.

Locals said the village was the single largest orang asli village in Cameron Highlands.

It has some 1,300 villagers.

More 'naked marriages' in China

Without expensive preparation and rituals, Wang Shaowei and Zhang Xin tied the knot at a cost of nine yuan (RM4), which was spent on obtaining the marriage certificate.

The couple, who had just entered the workforce, did away with nearly all the traditional 'must haves' for a Chinese wedding: an apartment, a car, wedding rings as well as a lavish ceremony.

"We had a big dinner in our rented two-bedroom apartment to celebrate the start of our married life, and nothing else," said Wang, 26, who lives with his wife in Shijiazhuang, capital city of northern China's Hebei province.

In recent years, a growing number of young Chinese have opted for a 'naked marriage'. The term refers to a couple who get hitched without any major assets and who spend little on their wedding ceremony. Some do so because of their eagerness for independence, while others simply have no choice.

However, the frugal wedding of Wang and his wife, conducted behind their parents' backs, upset their older relatives. The newly-weds were forced by their parents to hold a delayed, but grand wedding ceremony, and later moved into an apartment purchased by Wang's family and received a car bought by Zhang's parents.

"My parents can't accept a wedding without a new apartment or rituals. My mother says, 'It's ridiculous to marry a woman with nine yuan!'' Zhang said.

The concept of naked marriage is in sharp contradiction to China's established marriage customs, which call for parents to help lay the material foundation for their children's marriages.

Generally, getting married may cost the bridegroom's family years of savings, which is supposed to pay for a house - or at least the down payment - and a red carpet ceremony, as well as decent betrothal gifts for the bride's family.

The bride's family may consider funding the home renovation, or buying a car, depending on their financial position.

The naked marriage phenomenon, which was coined in 2008 by Internet users, has drawn much discussion after a popular TV series, Naked Marriage Age, struck a chord with many young Chinese adults, especially those born in the 1980s.

The drama depicts the bittersweet life of a young couple who had a naked marriage and fought for a better life.

According to a poll conducted by the social investigation centre of the China Youth Daily prior to this year's Chinese Valentine's Day, Qixi Festival, which fell on Saturday, nearly 48 per cent of 3,214 respondents said they supported the idea of naked marriages, while 23 per cent opposed it.

The survey also found that 55 per cent of the respondents viewed courage as essential when opting for such marriages, and 43 per cent agreed that the married life of such couples would be tougher than that of their financially better-off peers.

Experts said the increasing acceptance of naked marriages shows a more open-minded attitude among the youth.

Man, 58, jailed for killing friend, 36, during quarrel in Toa Payoh

WHEN a quarrel broke out between two men drinking beer and stout at the void deck of a block of flats in Toa Payoh, the older man told the younger man to go home.

But, 36-year-old Charles Gunalingam, jobless, continued quarrelling with Ravindra Tagore R Pillai, 58, and punched him in the chest.

Ravindra retaliated by smashing a stout bottle and using the broken bottle neck to to slash Mr Charles until the younger man collapsed.

Police arrested Ravindra at the scene.

Man who put semen in water bottle ordered to pay $33k

SANTA ANA (AP) - A MAN in the United States convicted of ejaculating into a co-worker's water bottle has been ordered to pay the woman more than US$27,000 (S$32,975).

The Los Angeles Times says a judge on Monday ordered Michael Kevin Lallana to pay the woman for loss of wages, therapy and medical expenses.

Lallana was convicted earlier this year of two misdemeanour counts of battery.

Prosecutors say Lallana deposited his semen twice last year in the water bottle of a co-worker at Northwestern Mutual Mortgage Co in Newport Beach.

Woman's head trapped in bus doors

A woman attempting to get off a bus in China's eastern Anhui Province got her head trapped in the closing doors.

The unfortunate passenger was taking a trip in the town of Maanshan, when the impatient driver closed the doors while her head was still poking out, reported The Daily Mail.

The driver, who was oblivious to the situation, continued to the next stop, leaving the woman wincing in pain.

Passengers who noticed her plight shouted at the driver to stop and open the doors.

He eventually did so, freeing the embarrassed woman, who quickly walked away, rubbing her neck.

80-year-old man gets HIV from unprotected sex

CHINA - AN 80-YEAR-OLD Chinese man was recently diagnosed with HIV.

Doctors said he probably caught the virus through having frequent unprotected sex. Experts in China believe the virus is spreading fast among the golden age group and this case is the latest to support the opinion.

The octogenarian, from Wuhan, was admitted to the hospital for a lingering fever and was later found to be HIV positive.

The man, who was widowed in his old age, has no record of blood transfusions, but had an active unprotected sexual life, doctors said.

Experts said the spread of HIV has picked up among older Chinese men in recent years because these senior citizens have become healthier, more open-minded about sex, and increasingly bored after retirement.

A recent survey conducted by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows the percentage of new HIV patients aged 50 and above grew from 7.8 to 14.9 per cent this year. Most of them were male, who contracted the virus through sexual intercourse. -- CHINA DAILY/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Wayne to star in "Rosy Business 3"

Following the success of Rosy Business and its sequel No Regrets, TVB has decided to shoot another sequel to the drama.

The male lead will be Wayne Lai, of course.

But Sheren Tang, who is currently busy filming in China, has yet to confirm if she has any time to film the series.

Rosy Business

Cheung Wah Biu, the scriptwriter of the previous two series who left TVB over a year ago, will return in October to partner producer Lee Tim Sing again in "Rosy Business 3".

Upon learning of the news, Wayne was extremely happy and and felt he could even win a third Best Actor award.

On his birthday in May, the actor made a wish that Cheung would return to TVB and his dream has come true.

Lee said it would be difficult for "Rosy Business 3" to have continuity from Rosy Business and No Regrets.

"The characters of Sheren and Wayne have already died and we can no longer continue with their stories.

"Perhaps there are some elements of continuity in the story, such as setting the time line in the 1960s or pre-modern period. The story will be not be dependent on the earlier series."

Lee said filming of "Rosy Business 3" would start in April 2012.

Minggu lalu isteri Jimmy Shanley, Nursuhaila Eliani Suhaimy mengadakan sidang media tergempar bagi menjelaskan faktor utama berlakunya keretakan rumah tangganya dengan pengacara sensasi, Jimmy Shanley.

Sering dipukul dan ditampar adalah antara faktor dia enggan kembali kepada Jimmy. Malah, sebelum malam perkahwinan pun dia telah ditampar apabila meminta izin untuk keluar bertemu rakan. Ini termasuklah dia dikasari ketika berbulan madu di Koh Samui walaupun hanya kerana pertelingkahan kecil.

Bertemu Jimmy di rakaman Mega Raya 2011 di Filem Negara Malaysia Sabtu lalu, GUA sempat mewawancara pengacara itu mengenai tindakan susulan yang akan diambil oleh pihaknya.

“Kita kena tunggu di mahkamah. Ini kerana apabila saya membuka mulut kepada media ada individu tertentu mengaitkan saya dengan publisiti murahan. Saya terpaksa menjawab persoalan media kerana itu tanggungjawab saya sebagai personaliti yang menjadi hak milik masyarakat.”

“Lebih baik saya diam sekarang dari dituduh cuba untuk meraih simpati dan saya hanya akan bercakap bila perlu sahaja. Saya tidak cakap kosong kerana setiap apa yang perkatakan dibantu dengan bukti-bukti yang kukuh. Saya akan berdiam sehingga di mahkamah kelak.”

Apabila cuba dirisik tentang maksud bukti-bukti yang kukuh, Jimmy menjawab ringkas “tunggu di mahkamah sahaja.”

Woman 'hired hitman to kill son over unpaid loan

MOSCOW - A MOSCOW woman hired a hitman to kill her 21-year-old son because he refused to pay back a loan for a new computer, investigators said on Wednesday.

The woman, 47, and her son quarrelled after he took out a loan in her name to buy a notebook computer and neglected to pay her back, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

She approached an acquaintance and offered him more than 12,000 euros (S$20,807) to kill her son.

But he secretly reported the request to police and the woman was arrested as she handed over the final payment.

Lucas Tse has expressed his support for mummy dearest Cecilia Cheung.

The four-year-old boy told his parents that he would be by his mother's side.

On Monday, Nicholas Tse brought his lawyers to discuss the divorce terms with his wife.

By then, Cecilia – who has been trying to save the marriage – realised that there were no returns.

Hong Kong's 3 Weekly magazine reported that Cecilia has agreed to divorce.

But before making the decision, she broke down and cried hysterically while hugging Lucas tight in her arms.

On seeing this, the boy immediately consoled his mother.

"Don't cry mom. I won't follow daddy," he said with tears rolling down his cheeks.

For that, Cecilia has decided to let go of Nicholas' wealth, but demands full custody of Lucas and her younger son Quintus.

Nicholas has reportedly agreed to the term.

Man jumps off bridge to catch train

A man, who was running late for his train ride, has jumped off a bridge above the railway in China.

He landed on top of a train and was seen lying motionless for a while, but regained consciousness minutes later.

The 40-year-old traveller, surnamed Ge, was unhurt during the Tuesday incident at Qingdao railway station.

An eyewitness, known only as Zhang, said he was shocked to see the man hanging on the edge of the bridge on the second floor.

He immediately shouted for help, but in was too late.

Ge released his hands and fell on a train, which was about to leave the station.

Ge was to take the 8am train to Linxi of Shandong province, but he was late for the coach.

Not realising the train he was to catch had left the station, he mistook another train – which was about to leave – was that of his.

In a desperate move to catch the train, he jumped some five-metre down from the bridge.

Mr. Bean crashes his supercar

British media say actor Rowan Atkinson, famed for his Mr. Bean television shows and films, is recovering in hospital after crashing his supercar in London.

The 56-year-old comedian, also known for the "Blackadder" historical comedy shows, was expected to be discharged on Friday after treatment for a shoulder injury, the Daily Mirror reported.

Atkinson's spokesman could not immediately be reached.

Police and firefighters both said that a vehicle crashed late Thursday close to Haddon, a village about 85 miles (137km) north of London.

The car struck a tree, a lamppost and caught fire, authorities said. Firefighters said the driver was not trapped and he was taken to hospital.

Atkinson was driving his McLaren F1 supercar — one of the world's fastest road cars, the newspaper said.

A businessman wants to buy a car with coins in China.

The flour trader, surnamed Wang, arrived in his van at a car shop in Xianyang city of Shaanxi province on Aug 1.

He opened the boot and carried down seven sacks of coins - with various face values - to pass it to the dealer.

"I want to buy a car. I have 60,000 yuan (RM27,756) cash," he said, adding the coins weighed some 300kg.

Wang said he collected around 10,000 yuan (RM4,626) of coins each month from his clients that include bread shop owners and noodle manufacturers.

The car dealer had trouble finding a bank to receive the unusual payment, as counting it was not easy.

Finally, he found one bank that agreed to receive just 15,000 yuan (RM6,940) of the coins.

Meanwhile, Wang is still waiting for other banks to help him deposit the money into the dealer's account.

He cannot drive away the car he wants to buy until all his coins are received and counted by the banks.

20-40 years for woman who hid baby remains

A US woman who said she secretly gave birth in her bathtub five times, killed one of the babies and hid all five bodies in a closet pleaded guilty to murder Thursday and was sentenced to the maximum 20 to 40 years in prison.

Michele Kalina, 46, of Pennsylvania, conceived the babies through a long affair with a co-worker and hid the pregnancies from him and her husband. She told a psychiatrist she had wrapped each baby with a towel and then stored the body in a tub or container in a locked closet.

She thought four were 'essentially stillborn' and denied doing anything 'malicious', testified Dr Jerome Gottlieb, a defence psychiatrist. But over the course of several visits with him, she recalled that the third baby, a boy, had moved. That death is the basis for the one count of murder.

"She (said she) might have wrapped the baby too tightly with a towel so that the baby couldn't breathe," Dr Gottlieb said. That boy's body was then encased in cement and stored with the others - in a cooler, tub or cardboard box - in a closet. The five bodies decomposed for years until her teenage daughter found the skeletal remains last year. By then, authorities could not determine how the babies had died.

Kalina, a home-health aide, also pleaded guilty to five counts each of abuse of a corpse and concealing a child's death. Dr Gottlieb described her as an alcoholic who was intoxicated during the births and does not fully recall what took place. She also suffers from severe depression and other mental-health issues, he said.

Public defender Holly Feeney sought leniency on grounds that Kalina had learned to deny reality as she endured severe physical and sexual abuse as a child. Gottlieb suggested she put memories of the babies in a 'psychological closet', much as she put their remains in a physical one. Berks County Judge Linda K M Ludgate didn't buy the argument. She said Kalina had left the newborns in tubs and containers 'like garbage', and rebuked her for not getting help, at least after the first delivery.

It seems pickpocketing has become more sophisticated and bold in China.

The Chinese pickpockets are snatching valuables with chopsticks or long tweezers, the Huffington Post reported.

Earlier, Shanghaiist and MSNBC posted video clips showing thieves snatching valuables such as wallet and cell phones out of their unwitting victims’ pockets with eating utensils in China.

The snatchers approach from the behind and use long chopsticks to grab valuables while the victims shop around or walk blankly.

BCCK Ramadan buffet is back

KUCHING: Diners to this year’s Ramadan Buffet at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) will be treated to a bigger and better buffet than ever before.

Starting from August 5 to 26, 2011, the BCCK Ramadan Buffet will be held in The Great Hall which has been transformed into a tranquil setting which can accommodate up to 1,000 diners a night.

“Regrettably, last year BCCK had to turn away many potential diners as we could only accommodate a maximum of 400 diners a night. After reviewing the feedback from last year’s patrons, we have improved on our seating capacity to ensure that all diners are able to celebrate this blessed month with their family and friends,” said the chief executive officer of BCCK, Paul D’Arcy.

BCCK’s signature offerings like Whole Roast Lamb, Shawarma, Bubur Pedas, Bubur Lambuk, Cucur Udang and many more will be available daily. Buffet favourites Poached Banana Prawns on Ice, Poached Mussels on Ice, Poached Snapper Fillet on Ice, Smoked Tenggiri, Assorted Cold Cuts, Assorted Mini Tapas, Assorted Kerabu and Sambal are also available daily.

This year’s Ramadan Buffet menu will rotate on a weekly basis, said D’Arcy. The new approach was derived from customer feedback which had suggested for the same menu to remain for a week so that they can bring their family and friends to savour what they had enjoyed, he said.

To ensure ease of access and shorter queues, BCCK’s Ramadan Buffet spread and live action stalls will be duplicated.

All delicacies at BCCK’s Ramadan Buffet are certified halal by JAIS (Department of Islamic Affairs of Sarawak). As an added attraction for all diners, there will also be a Raya Bazaar selling Raya goodies from August 5 to 26, 2011.

BCCK’s Ramadhan Buffet can be enjoyed at just RM65 nett for adults and RM25 nett for children age five to 12. Prior reservations are required and vouchers are on sale now.
