Jailed for not putting girl on baby seat

A 22-year-old mother and her boyfriend were found guilty for causing the death of her baby in a road accident in Taiwan.

They were sentenced to six months and four months jail respectively.

During the incident in New Taipei City last year, the divorcee - surnamed Xu - and her lover were bringing the nine-month-old baby for a car ride in May.

Xu was driving the car without a license while the 26-year-old man carried the baby in his arms on the front passenger seat.

Midway, Xu rammed into a traffic lights post.

Due to impact, the baby was flung off the man's arms and hit the windscreen. She died.

According to Taiwan's traffic rules, any child below the age of one or weighed under 10kg, must be secured in child seats.

Ryan Seacrest planning to propose - The American Idol host and the Dancing With The Stars dancer went public with their romance last June and now...

Ryan Seacrest planning to propose

Ryan Seacrest is reportedly planning to propose to Julianne Hough soon.

The American Idol host and the Dancing With The Stars dancer went public with their romance last June and now friends have revealed the presenter has bought an engagement ring and is waiting for the perfect time to pop the question.

A friend said: "Ryan already has the ring - and it's a rock - four to five carats.

"Money was no object for Ryan - expect the Rolls Royce of engagement rings.

"He's had it for a while and is in the process of planning the engagement. It's going to happen within the next few months or so!"

Another pal refused to confirm or deny the report, but did admit 36-year-old Ryan has never been happier.

The friend told website RadarOnline.com: "If Ryan was planning to propose, why would I spoil the whole surprise for him?

"I don't think I've ever seen him like this over a girl before, ever... they fit together so perfectly.

"All his family adore her too, and I know his mom would be really happy to see him settle down with Julianne and work on giving her some grandchildren!"

Ryan recently denied he is already engaged but admitted he is smitten with Julianne, 22.

He said: "I'm not engaged. I'm very happy."

14-year-old boy loses fingers in meat grinder

KOTA KINABALU: A 14-year-old boy lost his fingers in a meat grinder accident at a popular coffee shop here.

The boy known as Azmin lost two fingers in the mishap at 8.25pm, after his hand got sucked into the grinder.

“Firemen were called in to help but they could not remove the hand. He was taken to the hospital in an ambulance with a part of the grinder,” said a witness at the scene of the incident in Gaya Street on Thursday.

The boy was supposed to use chopsticks to push meat into the grinder but instead used his hand which was sucked in by the machine.

Meanwhile, a Department Of Occupational Safety and Health spokesman said yesterday two investigators were sent to check safety arrangements at the coffee shop.

Labour officials are investigating why the shop employed a child.

In an unrelated case, police are investigating the dumping of a five-month old foetus buried outside a Taman Che Mei house here on Thursday.

This is the fourth case of foetus dumping reported this year.

Man killed in robbery by grandson, pals
By SARBAN SINGH

JEMPOL: A 71-year-old man came home to find his grandson and his friends ransacking his house – and when he decided to call the police, one of the youths stabbed him to death.

According to his wife, the man was shocked when he came across his 17-year-old grandson and three other teenagers ransacking his house at Felda Palong 2 near here at 9pm on Thursday.

The 57-year-old woman said the couple had earlier found their clothes strewn all over and the cupboards ransacked upon their return from attending tahlil prayers for her mother-in-law in Bukit Rokan.

“We found a parang on the floor and a short while later, we heard voices from a room upstairs,” she said, adding that they were shocked to see their 17-year-old grandson chatting with three teenagers inside.

She said her husband lost his temper then and immediately told her to call the police.

“One of the youths suddenly lunged at my husband and began stabbing him repeatedly. The same youth also hit me,” she said tearfully at her home.

She said although her husband was bleeding profusely, the youths grabbed a bag containing cash and jewellery worth some RM10,000 before fleeing.

“He was grabbing his abdomen and watching the kids run away. I’ll never forget the look of disappointment on his face to see his own grandson committing such a heinous crime,” she said.

Her husband died from excessive blood loss while she needed 30 stitches for cuts on her shoulder, chest and arms.

State OCCI ACP Hamdan Majid said the grandson and his friends, including a girl, were detained several hours later.

The suspects were aged between 15 and 18 years.

Suicide woman changes her mind — but it’s too late

Suicide woman changes her mind — but it’s too late
Other News & Views by FOO YEE PING, WINNIE YEOH and A.RAMAN

SHORTLY after taking paraquat, a single mother changed her mind about committing suicide and called a friend for help.

However, it was too late.

The 41-year-mother of three died at a hospital in Muar at 1.30pm on Monday, three hours after she was admitted, reported Harian Metro.

The woman, who divorced her husband six years ago, had been having difficulty making ends meet and had told her friend she felt pressured about life.

She apparently expressed regret about trying to kill herself while being taken to the hospital.

> Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin (pic), whose birthday gift last year from her husband was a RM40,000 Louis Vuitton bag, only wanted a MacBook Pro laptop this time.

The pop diva’s husband Datuk Seri Khalid Muhammad Jiwa, threw her a party at JW Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Monday to mark her 32nd birthday.

”Datuk K is the person behind the celebration,” said Siti, who paid tribute to her husband and dedicated the song “Mencintaimu” (Loving You) to him.

According to Utusan Malaysia, Siti’s wish for the RM7,000 Apple laptop has not been granted because the couple has had no opportunity yet to shop due to the singer’s busy schedule.

Datuk K’s past birthday gifts to Siti included a Mercedes Benz and a specially-ordered RM200,000 Richard Mille watch.

The daily also ran a photograph of Siti and Datuk K with a little girl named Auddra who is reportedly their foster daughter.

SINGAPORE: Corrupt cop flick "Dabangg" has taken best film honours at a glitzy Bollywood awards night, beating Shah Rukh Khan's "My Name is Khan" which had to settle for the best actor and director accolades.

The Zee Cine Awards 2011, held at Singapore's Marina Bay Sands on Friday night, also saw Salman Khan's Dabangg awarded the best screenplay and song, at a ceremony where the winners are determined by public vote.

Producer Arbaaz Khan said the film was made after "a chance meeting once with (director) Abhinav Kashyap," and described himself and Kashyap as "two people with a lot of desperation to succeed and prove ourselves."

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he was honoured to receive the best actor prize for his role as an autistic man out to tell the US president that he is not a terrorist, after his son is killed in a racially-motivated attack.

"I'm very honoured, I'm very thrilled," he told a rapturous 5,000 strong audience who paid up to S$997 (US$775) for a ticket to the glitzy ceremony and cheered whenever he came onstage.

"I promise everyone here that I will work very, very hard and make sure that... at the end of my life and at the end of my career, I am deserving of all that you have given me," he added.

The film's director Karan Johar said he was also honoured to receive his best director prize.

"It feels very gratifying and heartening to receive this reward for a film like My Name is Khan, which I believe is possibly the most important film I have ever directed," he said.

The best actress award went to Vidya Balan for her role in "Ishqiya" as the wife of a gang lord who fakes his death to remain in charge of the underworld.

The near four-hour long awards ceremony featured Bollywood superstars such as Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan as well as Priyanka Chopra, and dazzled with elaborate sets and energetic dance performances.

The event was held for the first time since 2008, with organisers blaming the global financial crisis for hamstringing their show for the past two years.

Close to five million votes were cast by members of the public to determine the winners, organisers added.

Sammul Chan leaves TVB

Actor Sammul Chan, who starred in a string of popular Cantonese dramas like The Academy trilogy and Survivor’s Law, has left Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), the major TV station in Hong Kong.

The star of the upcoming Chinese series Love At Dusk revealed that he has not renewed his contract with TVB.

For decades, TVB is known as the cradle that nurtures a string of acting talents that went on to become household names. Among them were Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Carina Lau, Maggie Cheung, Stephen Chow and Andy Lau.

Chan, 32, shot to stardom playing an ambitious lawyer in 2003’s Survivor’s Law, but compared to peers like Raymond Lam and Ron Ng, he was given mostly supporting roles during his TVB days.

Despite so, he denied that was the reason of his departure.

“Each company has its strengths and weaknesses. What matter to me are the roles. Recently, there’s a shift in my career focus. Out of consideration for a bigger market, I decided not to renew my contract with TVB.
Sammul Chan (left) was noted for his portrayal as a young police officer in The Academy trilogy. The series also starred Ron Ng (right).

“I would rather have more freedom and explore new territories,” said Chan, who gained a huge following in China following his starring roles in China-produced television series like Schemes of a Beauty.

Despite being a free agent now, Chan did not rule out the possibility of returning to the station in the future.

“TVB is where I grew up. It had provided me with opportunities along the past ten years. So I’m grateful. Although I’m now based in China, it does not mean that I’ve forever left TVB. Who knows? I might return after one or two years,” he said.

Chan's last TVB series, a historical drama called Relic of an Emissary, is set to air later this year.

Hollywood remake of Death Note - Get ready to watch Death Note - in English

Hollywood remake of Death Note

Get ready to watch Death Note - in English.

American film director Shane Black, who was responsible for writing Hollywood blockbusters like Lethal Weapon, is now eyeing at making an English feature out of the hugely popular Japanese manga series.

The film will be produced by Warner Bros, while Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry have been roped in to pen the script.

Black, 49, was fascinated by Death Note and named it as his favourite manga.

Created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and manga artist Takeshi Obata, it follows Light Yagami, a teenager who finds a notebook and gains the ability of killing someone by writing his or her name in the book.

As Light makes it his mission to rid the world of evil, a detective known as L stands in his way and attempts to stop him.

Starting 2006, the manga series was turned into a string of Japanese live-action films that took the Asian audiences by storm.

"I was just struck by its unique and brilliant sensibility. What we want to do is take it back to that manga, and make it closer to what is so complex and truthful about the spirituality of the story, versus taking the concept and trying to copy it as an American thriller," Black told Deadline.com.

Black’s first and last directing attempt, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer, was a hit among critics.
