NZ mourns quake dead with 2 minutes of silence

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) - New Zealand held two minutes of silence Tuesday to mourn as many as 240 people killed when a powerful earthquake struck the city of Christchurch exactly one week earlier.

Rescue crews still picking through the rubble were among those who stopped work and bowed their heads at 12:51 p.m., along with millions of other people across the country.

The magnitude 6.3 quake struck within a few miles (kilometers) of downtown Christchurch, when the southern city of 350,000 was bustling with workers, shoppers and tourists going about their activities. It brought down or badly damaged office towers, churches and thousands of homes across the city in one of New Zealand's worst disasters.

As an international team of urban disaster specialists continued to pick through the wreckage Tuesday, police again raised the official death toll, saying the number of bodies pulled from the rubble had reached 154.

Police Superintendent Dave Cliff said a substantial number of people were still missing a week after the disaster, and that the total number of those killed could end up being much higher.

"I think we need to start considering that the figure of around 240 (is) not locked in stone because we are still getting information which is taking people off the list and sometimes adding others on," Cliff told reporters.

Prime Minister John Key called on all New Zealanders to stop what they were doing and join the commemoration "as a sign of unity for the people of Canterbury who are enduring a tragedy beyond what most of us can imagine." Canterbury is the region where Christchurch is located.

In the city, police, officials dressed in reflective vests and residents stood quietly, some with heads bowed, others clutching friends and family. At the end of the two minutes, a voice over a loudspeaker thanked people for taking part, and the officials went back to work.

"We have lost people, the city is wrecked, it will be a moment of emotion and pain," Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said before the ceremony.

On Monday, a 5-month-old boy who was the youngest known victim of the disaster was its first laid to rest, given a farewell by grieving relatives who clutched stuffed toys and draped his tiny coffin in a comforter.

Acid attack victim recalls horrific details of incident

GEORGE TOWN: An acid attack victim told the High Court that she was jolted awake from her sleep by a burning sensation as though her face, body and feet were on fire.

“I thought it was caused by hot water.

“I tried to open my eyes but I could not see properly.

“I could only see shadows,” said Tan Hui Linn, who was splashed with acid by her father two years ago.

Hui Linn, 19, had earlier told the court that she had gone to sleep after her late mother Chong Swee Lin, 50, returned home around 1am.

Recalling the incident on Oct 24, 2009, she told the court that she also heard her mother cry out:

“Ah Siew, why did you do this to me?,” adding that her mother was referring to her father Tan Teik Swee.

She was testifying in the trial of Teik Swee, 54, a Penang municipal council licensing officer charged with murdering his wife by splashing acid on her in their home at Jalan Batu Lanchang at 3am on Oct 24, 2009.

He is also charged with causing grievous hurt to Hui Linn at the same time and place.

The murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries a mandatory death sentence, while the second charge under Section 326 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 20 years, a fine or whipping.

Both charges were jointly heard.

When Deputy Public Prosecutor Azhar Mokhtar showed her a copy of a receipt for the purchase of a bottle of acid allegedly by Teik Swee from a chemist on Dec 26, 2007, Hui Linn said she had seen the copy and had tried to search for the bottle before, but in vain.

Cross-examined by counsel R. Dev Chander, she said her parents did not quarrel on the day of the incident.

“My father would spit on to the ground whenever he meets neighbours or anyone else.

“I felt this behaviour and some other things about him were not normal,” she added.

Hearing before Justice Zamani Abdul Rahim continues today.

'Wolf girl' gains fame and more friends - Little Supatra Sasuphan is celebrating after being named the World's Hairiest Girl

'Wolf girl' gains fame and more friends

Little Supatra Sasuphan is celebrating after being named the World's Hairiest Girl.

The 11-year-old, from Thailand, used to be teased about her looks and was often reduced to tears by jibes including "wolf girl" and "monkey face".

Even when she was brought home from the hospital neighbours asked her parents what sin they had committed to end up with such a hairy child.

But now Supatra, who has thick hair growing all over her face, ears, arms, legs, is delighted after her new found fame has helped her become one of the most popular girls in school.

Supatra's title was confirmed after a quick grilling from Guinness World Record executives.

Hair not in the way...Supatra Sasuphan having a bowl of noodles

She said: "Many people have to do a lot to get in. All I did was answer a few questions and then they gave it to me."

Supatra, nicknamed Nat, is one of only 50 documented cases of Ambras Syndrome since the Middle Ages.

Before the disease was understood, sufferers were branded "werewolves" but the condition is actually caused by a faulty chromosome.

She has attempted to remove the hair in the past with lasers but the treatment proved unsuccessful and it just kept growing back.

Supatra said: "There were a few people who used to tease me and call me monkey face but they don't do it any more."

Happy family...Suptara with her sister 15-year-old Sukanya, left, her father Sammrueng and mother Somphon"I'm very used to this condition. I can't feel the hair as it has always been like this. I don't feel anything.

"It does sometimes make it difficult to see when it gets long. I hope I will be cured one day."

When she was born she needed two operations just to be able to breathe.

Her father Sammrueng, 38, said: "She was not very healthy because her nostrils were only one millimetre wide.

"For the first three months she was kept in an incubator to help her breathe.

"She then had an operation to expand the nostrils by one and a half millimetres."

Hospital charges man for hymen-repair surgery

The family of a man in his late 70's is puzzled over his hospital bill, which liststhat he was charged for a hymen-repair surgery.

The septuagenarian, surnamed Lu, was admitted to a China hospital for cerebral hemorrhage during the Lunar New Year period.

When he was discharged 20 days later, he received a bill from Jingxing Provincial Hospital in Hebei province.

Among the charges list on the bill was a hymen-repair surgery that cost 330 yuan (RM153).

Lu and his family were puzzled. They immediately checked the previous bills from the same hospital and found that they were also charged for other treatments Lu did not get.

The family complained to the hospital and have been given a refund.

According to the hospital, the mistakes were typing errors made by the stuff.

Baby mice can re-grow damaged hearts - Newborn mice are found to have the ability to re-grow their damaged hearts

Baby mice can re-grow damaged hearts

Newborn mice are found to have the ability to re-grow their damaged hearts.

This is proven in a test after scientists removed part of the heart tissue of several one-day-old mice.

Surprisingly, the mice's hearts completed regenerated in 21 days later, and the organs functioned normally.

But the regenerative potential disappeared when the mice were seven to 10 days old.

This finding, published in journal Science, has led to hope that if human beings can do the same.

"In principle, mechanisms exist in a mammalian heart for regeneration, but they’re somehow permanently switched off," said Eric Olson of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre.

Previous studies had revealed some amphibians and fishes can re-grow damaged heart tissue.

Olson, a professor and chairman of molecular biology, said the main goal now is to search for drugs or genes to "waken" this mechanism in adult mammals.
