Beware of fake income tax refunds via e-mails: IRB
By LOH FOON FONG
KUALA LUMPUR: Syndicates offering fake income tax refunds seems to have refined their operations by informing e-mail users that the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) would return RM2,812.49 to them for tax overpaid.
The e-mails ask for bank account details of the e-mail users and, instead of money coming in, the users find money missing in their bank accounts.
IRB chief executive officer/director general Tan Sri Hasmah Abdullah said the syndicate had stated the figure right down to the sen to make it believable compared with the previous RM700 that the IRB had warned the public about on July 21.
“We want to state that the e-mails are fake and were not sent by IRB,” she told the media during a press conference Wednesday.
“If we want to inform tax payers about the refund, we will call them and send them a letter and not e-mail them,” she said.
