Loyal dog refuses to leave injured mate
A video of a shivering dog staying loyally by the side of a fellow canine amid the devastation in northern Japan has emerged as the country faces nuclear crisis and thousands of people left homeless.
The brown-and-white spaniel was found dirty and shivering as it approached reporters in Ibaraki prefecture.
It was filmed barking at them before returning to another lighter-coloured dog that was lying motionless amidst a tsunami-ravaged landscape.
The dog was filmed guarding its apparently injured companion before placing a protective paw over it
The spaniel, wearing a silver collar, was filmed guarding its prone and apparently injured companion before placing a protective paw over it as the reporters discussed what to do.
Moments later, the injured dog lifted its head and shortly afterwards sat up.
The reporters can be heard in the clip discussing the fate of the dogs.
"It is amazing how they survived the tremendous earthquake and tsunami. It's just amazing that they survived through this all."
Both dogs have reportedly been rescued since the video was filmed. The injured dog has been treated by a vet in Mito while the spaniel is at a shelter in the same town.
