Akademi Fantasia bows out

Previous AF contestants and winners with AF9 host Aznil Nawawi.
Popular reality music TV programme Akademi Fantasia (AF) will air for the last time this year, after eight seasons.
The programme began in 2002 and is still the top-rated TV program on the Astro malay channels.
The show has maintained a viewership above one million since it began and has helped paved the careers of singers like Vince, Mawi, Stacy, Mila and Adam.
Astro Ria channel manager Azlin Azmi said that although the viewership have been sustained over the years, the time has come to end the show.
“When AF began it was the only reality show. Today, there is an overload of reality shows. Every show has a specific audience," she said.
Aznil Nawawi, who was hosting the show for five seasons, will be returning to host the final season.
"It would be hard for us to revamp the show as it is franchised from Mexico," he said.
He said there is no shortage of talent in Malaysia.
“However, there are other channels for artistes to break into the industry, besides reality shows. There’s YouTube, for instance," he said.
"The audience from season one has already grown up. We also don’t think kids today will find it cool to watch a program that their parents watched nine years ago," he added.
There will be more music reality shows from Astro in the pipeline which will be announced later, said Azlin.
Over 4,000 hopefuls auditioned last month for AF9. AF9 will air from April 2 to June 11.
