Trainer dies after being crushed by elephant

A worker at a zoo in US has been killed after an elephant she was working with pushed her into a stall.

Stephanie James, 33, died of internal injuries suffered during the Friday accident after being taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Centre.

Knoxville Zoo spokeswoman Tina Rolen told the Knoxville News Sentinel that James' death was not caused by a malicious attack by the elephant, but by working in close proximity to such a large animal.

The 26-year-old elephant – Edie – weighs more than 3,630kg and stands 8 1/2 tall at the shoulder.

She has lived at the zoo since 2002.

Zoo officials say they are conducting a full investigation on the accident.

James had worked at the zoo for two years.

Paris Hilton reveals new reality show - Paris Hilton will show her "real" self in her new TV show

Paris Hilton reveals new reality show

The 29-year-old heiress has promised The World According to Paris - which will air on US network Oxygen in the spring -will show her how she really is, unlike the "character" she created to appear with pal Nicole Richie on 'The Simple Life' between 2003 and 2007.

She said: "OnThe Simple Life, I was playing a character I kind of invented. I didn't realise the show would last five seasons, so I had to keep doing it. I think people assume that's really how I am in real life. But when I'm with my friends and my family is when I feel most comfortable and myself. In the show, it really shows the real Paris."

Paris has been followed round-the-clock by cameras since October and the socialite believes the show will give a true account of her "crazy and fearless" life.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: "There are so many crazy things on the show, but one of the craziest is jumping out of a plane and skydiving,

"I'm fearless, and I live life to the fullest and feel like you only live once so you should make the most of it. Jumping out of a plane is the most incredible feeling in the world.

"We've been shooting since October-November, and it's whole access into my life. I'm shooting from the moment I wake up until I go to bed at night.

"I kind of scream at them sometimes when they come in so early."

Paris - who is dating Las Vegas nightclub boss Cy Waits - also revealed some conversations and arguments have been recorded that she "can't believe the world is going to see" - and that some special guests will appear on the show.

She explained: "So far there's two, and we're not even halfway done shooting."

Zee Cine Awards: SRK crowned Best Actor

Shah Rukh Khan was named Best Actor at the Zee Cine Awards in front of a sell-out crowd comprising fans and the who's who of the Indian film industry at the Marina Bay Sands marquee ballroom in Singapore Friday.

The awards ceremony, arguably Bollywood's Oscars, drew other top stars such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and film-maker Karan Johar.

Hosted by comic actor Akshay Kumar and director Sajid Khan, the three-hour-plus ceremony saw several stars dance to the tune of popular film songs.

Rai Bachchan set the stage alight with her nimble-footed moves, while Chopra introduced the nominees in the Best Film category as she danced impeccably to a medley of songs.

First held in Mumbai in 1995, the event celebrates the best in Indian cinema and gave out awards in more than 30 categories last night.

Superstar Khan picked up the best actor award for his endearing portrayal of Rizvan Khan, a Muslim who suffers from a form of autism known as Asperger's syndrome, in My Name Is Khan.

Australia floods sweep south, trail of disaster grows

MELBOURNE (Reuters)- Australian floods wreaked fresh havoc on rural communities in the south on Sunday, leaving a trail of destruction across four states, at least 17 dead and the prospect of reconstruction of historic proportions.

As tens of thousands of people in flood-stricken towns and cities in the north worked to clean out their homes and offices, heavy rains and floods meted out fresh disaster in southern Victoria state, the nation's second most populous.

Four major rivers in Victoria were in full flood, with 43 towns, 3,500 people and 1,400 properties affected. Hundreds of people have evacuated their homes, though no one has been killed so far in that state.

"They had the army in town. They were sandbagging on the west side. It was flowing fairly quickly," Paula Ryan, 40, who runs a mobile coffee van, told Reuters by telephone from Echuca on Sunday as it prepared to be swamped by the Campaspe River.

The floods began in the northern mining state of Queensland last month and have caused billions of dollars in damage from broken infrastructure, lost commodity exports and the paralysis of the state capital, Brisbane, a city of two million.

Queensland has accounted for all deaths so far, though the floods have also hit New South Wales and Tasmania states.

One central bank board member has estimated that the floods, linked by some scientists to global warming and rising sea temperatures, could shave up to 1 percent off economic growth in the December and March quarters, equal to around $A 13 billion. ($12.9 billion).

Victoria's State Emergency Service described flooding in the north of that state as probably its worst since records began, with spokesman Hugo Zoller saying it would continue for days.

Gary Tonkin, 50, who runs an auto-electric business in the Victorian town of Charlton, said the Avoca River was running higher than in historic 1956 floods, inundating his business, his son's home and daughter-in-law's hair salon.

"Three-quarters of the town is still under water. Some of those houses will probably have to be bulldozed. The force of the water was just unbelievable. Every street that the river was running down was just like a torrent," he said.

"It has uprooted fences and a lot of peoples' house fences are washed away. The power came back on half an hour ago. The water is just brown and stinks."

BRISBANE CLEANUP IN FULL SWING

Further north, though, floods waters continued to recede, mainly fine weather prevailed and Brisbane's port reopened in some good news for coal and grain exporters.

Coal mines are working to reopen, with water still needing to be pumped from their pits and rail lines to the coast to be repaired. In New South Wales, completion of the grain harvest has been delayed and crop quality severely downgraded.

Even in Queensland, where the cleanup is in full swing, some communities face new flood fears with the hamlet of Condamine largely evacuated for a second time.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said on Sunday the number of confirmed dead in the state had climbed to 17, but was likely to rise with more than a dozen people still missing.

The husband of a Myanmar woman was shocked when he discovered the bodies of his wife and maid at their house in Taman Malim Permai

Man horrified to find wife and maid murdered at rented house

MALACCA: The husband of a Myanmar woman was shocked when he discovered the bodies of his wife and maid at their house in Taman Malim Permai here.

The bodies of Nyat Nyat, 35, who runs a restaurant in Melaka Sentral Terminal, and her maid Taw Taw Neo, 31, were found with multiple stab wounds yesterday.

It is learnt that Nyat’s husband, identified only as Sithu, 35, arrived home at 12.45pm but found the door locked. He then called his brother-in-law who arrived promptly.

Nyat’s younger brother Nanda, 30, said both of them managed to pry open the kitchen window and were horrified to see the maid lying in the kitchen and his sister’s body in the living room.

Nyat and her husband have been renting the house for the past six years. Besides running the restaurant, they also worked as agents bringing Myanmar migrant workers into the country.

The police found Nyat’s five-month-old daughter alive in one of the rooms of the two-storey house.

The bodies have been sent to the Malacca Hospital for post-mortem.

A neighbour, who only wanted to be known as Wan, said he heard a commotion from Nyat’s house.

“The argument stopped shortly afterwards and I saw two men calmly walking out the house and leaving on foot about an hour later,” he added.

State CID chief DCP Raja Shaharom Raja Abdullah said police were investigating the motive for the killings as the house was not ransacked and none of the valuables was missing.

A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) air stewardess was found dead in a hotel at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport early Friday morning

MAS stewardess dead in Amsterdam

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) air stewardess was found dead in a hotel at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport early Friday morning.

Chin Swee Len, 34, had flown to the Dutch capital on Tuesday and was supposed to have returned to Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The cause of death has yet to be ascertained.

Her body was said to have been found by hotel employees.

When contacted, the hotel front office staff confirmed that Chin had checked in on Tuesday. “But she left her room the following day.”

MAS personnel found out about her disappearance when she failed to turn up for a pre-departure briefing.

MAS operations director Capt Azharuddin Osman said the airline was deeply saddened by the death of the cabin crew member.

“Our main concern now is to support the family where we can,” he said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to them during this difficult time.”

Capt Azharuddin said Chin’s family had been informed and arrangements were being made to fly them over to the Dutch capital.

The family members left on a MAS flight from the KL International Airport last night.

“We are fully co-operating with the authorities as they are still in the process of ascertaining the cause of death,” said Capt Azharuddin.

“Any other information on this matter is pure speculation at this point in time,” he said, adding that MAS was unable to disclose any further details as it was a police case.

Miss Nebraska wins 2011 Miss America pageant A 17-year-old from Nebraska became the youngest winner of the Miss America crown in 90 years...

Miss Nebraska wins 2011 Miss America pageant

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 17-year-old from Nebraska became the youngest winner of the Miss America crown in 90 years on Saturday after beating 52 other young women from across the United States.

Teresa Scanlan won a US$50,000 scholarship and a year-long run with the crown at the competition at the Planet Hollywood casino-resort in Las Vegas.

She was the youngest Miss America since the pageant's first competition in 1921, when Margaret Gorman of the District of Columbia won at age 15.

Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady won US$25,000 as first runner-up, while Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier won US$20,000 for third place.

Scanlan, a recent high school graduate from the western Nebraska town of Gering, planned to study American politics at Patrick Henry College in Virginia after her reign as Miss America.

She also hoped to attend law school, become a judge and eventually a politician, according to her pageant biography.

Scanlan won after strutting in a black bikini and a white evening gown, playing "White Water Chopped Sticks" on piano and telling the audience that when it comes to the website Wikileaks, security should come before public access to government information.

"You know when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know, because it's so important that everybody who's in our borders is safe and so we can't let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly," she said.

The contestants - from every state plus the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico - started the show by dancing up the aisles while wearing silver cocktail dresses.

A panel of seven judges eyed them for looks and fitness. The competition included evening gown, talent and interview portions, with eliminations for 15 finalists, then 12, then 10, five and finally the winner along the way.

The judges had picked Miss Oklahoma Emoly West; Miss Texas Ashley Melnick; Miss Rhode Island Deborah Saint-Vil; Miss Utah Christina Lowe; Miss Washington Jacquie Brown; Miss Arizona Kathryn Bulkley; Miss Virginia Caitlin Uze, and Miss California Arianna Afsar.

Fans voted in Miss New York Claire Buffie and Miss Delaware Kayla Martell.

And in a first-ever twist for the contest, the young women picked two finalists themselves, Miss Kentucky Djuan Trent and Miss Oregon Stephenie Denise Steers.

In her introduction to the audience, Bulkley dedicated her performance to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head last week in Tucson. Bulkley called Giffords her mentor.

The pageant celebrated its 90th anniversary this year.
