Bannister sliding kills student
Sliding down a bannister may be fun for kids but it can also be fatal.
The Daily Mail reported that 11-year-old Elle Hiscott fell head-first when attempting the stunt at a school in the United Kingdom.
She did this after asking permission to use the toilet during a lesson, plunging two floors to the concrete floor below.
An inquest heard that staff were so worried about the craze among pupils at the school in Bethnal Green, East London, they took turns to patrol the stairwell.
But year-seven pupil Hiscott was caught on CCTV falling to the floor during lessons and she was found lying unconscious by two 12-year-olds after they were alerted by the sound of an impact.
Supply teacher David Merrilees said: 'I had just finished speaking to the class and I heard a loud thump from outside.
"Two of the girls from my class went out to investigate. I was walking towards the door and the girls came back in and said someone was lying on the floor.
"There was an eerie silence for a few moments."
Medical staff and an ambulance were called to Raine's Foundation School to treat Elle, who had multiple fractures of the skull.
However, eight days after the incident on October 13 last year, she died with her parents by her bedside at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Doctors had been unable to prevent her brain from swelling.
A verdict of accidental death was recorded at Poplar Coroner's Court on Elle, who lived with her mother Gemma Goodwin and brother George in Bow.
