Guillermo plans 3D Pinocchio film
Get ready for Pinocchio – in 3D.
Guillermo del Toro, who brought us dark but delightful fantasy fares like Pan’s Labyrinth, is working with The Jim Henson Company to come up with a 3D stop-motion film on the Carlo Collodi classic.
This is not the only Pinocchio film in the works, as Warner Bros., along with Dan Jinks and Bryan Fuller, expressed their interest in taking "a fresh approach that’s going to be very entertaining" on the well-known tale last year.
For del Toro’s version, it will be produced by the director, while Mark Gustafson, who served as animation director on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox, will co-direct the film with Gris Grimly, using the latter’s 2002 illustrated book on the classic - which captivated both adults and children - as a general guide.
With del Toro’s and Grimly’s involvement in mind, one can expect this to be dark and intriguing compared to the previous portrayals on the beloved character.
This was confirmed by del Toro.
"There has to be darkness in any fairy tale or children’s narrative work, something the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson and Walt Disney understood."
"We tend to call something Disney-fied, but a lot of people forget how powerfully disturbing the best animated Disney movies are, including those kids being turned into donkeys in Pinocchio.
"What we’re trying to do is present a Pinocchio that is more faithful to the take that (Collodi) wrote. That is more surreal and slightly darker than what we’ve seen before,” he explained.
