Iranian film wins big at Berlin Film Festival

An Iranian film about the troubled marriage of a middle-class couple has nabbed the top honour at the Berlin Film Festival.

Titled Nader and Simin: A Separation, it picked up the Golden Bear award at the festival. The cast of the film was also honoured in the acting department, with its male ensemble, led by Peyman Moaadi, winning the best actor award, while the best actress award went to its female ensemble, led by Leila Hatami.

The film, directed by Asghar Farhadi, looks at the gap between the middle-class and the lower-class societies, by telling a story about a separated Iranian couple that hires a lower-class caretaker for their father.

"I never would have thought that I would win this prize," said Farhadi, adding that the win provides "a very good opportunity to think of the people of my country, the country I grew up in, the country where I learned my stories - a great people".

Though he lost the best director award to Ulrich Kohler, he won the same award at the festival for his work on About Elly two years ago.

Kohler, a German director, beat Farhadi with his film Sleeping Sickness, while Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr won the Silver Bear for Best Film with The Turin Horse.
