Acid attack victim completes SPM and hopes operation next month goes well
GEORGE TOWN: Acid attack victim Tan Hui Linn walked out from the exam hall with a huge sigh of relief after completing her final Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) paper.
While others were celebrating their “freedom”, the 18-year-old girl is worried about the plastic surgery she will undergo at the Sungai Buloh Hospital next month.
“I will be going to Selangor to see my doctor on Dec 20 for consultation before my plastic surgery operation in January,” she said when met at SMK Convent Datuk Keramat yesterday.
Wearing a facemask and protective pad on her right eye, Tan’s hands and legs were also covered with bandages and plasters.
Tan is hoping to do well in the SPM as she wants to continue her studies in Form Six and is keen to take up accountancy or psychology in university.
“The final paper on Chinese comprehension and literature was difficult. However, I hope to score in Mathematics and Science,” she said.
Tan said she faced some difficulties during the examination when her sight started to become blur.
The invigilators were kind enough to give her a time extension to complete the papers.
On Oct 24, Tan and her mother Chong Swee Lin, 50, were sleeping in their home at Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim when they were splashed with acid.
Chong, who was badly burnt, died about 10 hours later. Tan sustained 60% burns on her face and upper torso.
She had to undergo several operations to restore her sight.
Her father Tan Teik Swee, 53, has been charged with murdering Chong and causing grievous hurt to her.
