Three killed, 2 seriously injured in pre-dawn accident

YAN: Three died and two were injured in an accident that occurred at Batu 13 Jalan Alor Setar Sungai Petani near Bukit Besar here at 2.45am Saturday.

Two of the victims were identified as Ooi In Too, 47, from Simpang 3 Sungai Daun and Eiew Eng Khoon, 29, from Kampung Sungai Limau Luar while the third victim, a pedestrian could not be identified as there was no document on his body.

The injured were two Myanmar nationals identified as Lee Pa Mei, 30,and Man Shut Kyi, 31.

Yan OCPD Deputy Supt Ismail Abu said Ooi and Eiew were travelling in a Proton Satria car with Lee and Man when they were involved in an accident with the unidentified man.

DSP Ismail said the three men died at the scene due to severe injuries while the women, both pregnant, were transferred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital and were reported to be in critical conditions.

He urged those who had witnessed the accident to come forward or contact Yan police station at 04-4655222.

Four die in tragic crash

BEHRANG: Four people will forever be remembered as good Samaritans who died trying to rescue their friends trapped in a bus that skidded and keeled over when a sand-laden trailer ploughed into it in a gruesome accident along the North-South Expressway.

The four are SMK Air Merah Form Three students Khairul Anwar Azhan and Maysarra Zaidi, both 15, their teacher Siti Hajar Mohamad, 33, and Kampung Alor Teja Wanita Umno branch chief Basarah Saad, 45.

The students and teacher were on their way from Kulim to Kuala Lumpur when their bus overturned. It was then rammed by the trailer at the 382nd kilometre of the North-South Expressway, 100m from the rest area here, at about 4.20am yesterday.

Khairul, Maysarra and Siti had crawled out and were doing their best to pull the others out.

Basarah, who was on another bus, had got off the vehicle to help the teachers and students in the overturned bus when the trailer rammed into it. The trailer which hit Khairul, Maysarra, Siti and Basarah also overturned.

Siti was decapitated and lost her leg while Maysarra was buried in the sand. Rescue personnel pulled out Maysarra's body out of the sand six hours later, but that, too, by accident they were looking for Siti's leg.

Tanjung Malim acting OCPD Supt Md Tahir Kasim said the bus involved in the accident was carrying 36 students and three teachers.

“There were two drivers on board. Initial investigations showed that the driver at the wheel lost control of the bus after one of the front tyres burst.

“The bus swung to the left and overturned. While attempts were being made to get the students and the teachers out, a trailer hit the stationary bus from behind,” he said.

Supt Md Tahir said the drivers of the bus and trailer escaped with slight injuries.

“A total of 22 victims received outpatient treatment at the Slim River Hospital.

“Seven other passengers suffered serious injuries,” he said. Of the seven, students Mohd Azim Dahlan, Mohd Faizal Anuar, Mohd Sariffuddin, all 15, and teacher Azriah Hani, 31, were warded at the Slim River Hospital.

Those warded at the Teluk Intan Hospital were Abdul Rahman Danial Abdul Ghani, 15, teacher Rosilawati Mat Rifim, 40, and her son Idzmi Haikal Khairul Shah, five.

Azriah Hani said the group had left Kulim at 11.30pm on Thursday on what was supposed to be a three-day trip to Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands.

Injured man in bus crash killed while rescuing passengers

POH: In a tragic sequence of events, an injured bus crash victim who was helping other passengers was himself killed when a container lorry smashed into the stalled vehicle.

Sahad @ Shariff Md Din was earlier travelling with his family and other passengers when the bus they were in crashed into a lorry.

The 74-year-old who was helping the injured victims was flung into a ravine and killed when the stalled bus got hit a second time at KM341.9 of the North-South Expressway near Bidor by a container lorry.

His daughter, Hasni Sahad, 47, said: “I was looking for my children when a container lorry crashed into the rear of the bus.

“I shouted out to my father to get away from the wreck but when I turned around, he was nowhere to be seen. One moment he was helping others to get off the bus and in the next, he was gone,” she said.

Hasni, a telephone operator with The Star in Penang, was travelling with her parents, sister, two children and some friends from the island to Nilai yesterday.

“It was supposed to be a fun trip. Instead, we had to watch father die.”

Hasni said the bus was badly damaged. “I was thrown to the floor while my parents were hit by luggage from the overhead compartment,” she related.

Hasni said passengers were trying to get to safety when the container lorry, which was transporting paper reels, rammed into the bus.

Tapah OCPD Superintendent Roslan Bek Ahmad said it took Fire and Rescue Department personnel over an hour to free three victims trapped in the mangled wreck.

“Six passengers who suffered serious injuries have been taken to hospitals in Tapah, Teluk Intan and Ipoh while two others who sustained slight injuries received outpatient treatment at the Tapah Hospital.”

Major tsunami damage in N Japan after 8.9 quake

TOKYO (AP) - A powerful tsunami spawned by the largest earthquake in Japan's recorded history slammed the eastern coast Friday, sweeping away boats, cars, homes and people as widespread fires burned out of control.

Authorities said at least 60 people were killed and many more missing.

The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake was followed by at least 19 aftershocks, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0.

Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter.

A tsunami warning was issued for the entire Pacific, including areas as far away as South America, the entire U.S. West Coast, Canada and Alaska.

Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said at least 32 people were killed.

A utility company in northeastern Japan reported a fire in a turbine building of nuclear power plant.

"The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan," Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference.

Even for a country used to earthquakes, this one was of horrific proportions. It unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland.

Large fishing boats and other sea vessels rode high waves into the cities, slamming against overpasses.

Upturned and partially submerged vehicles were seen bobbing in the water.

Waves of muddy waters swept over farmland near the city of Sendai, carrying buildings, some on fire, inland as cars attempted to drive away.

Sendai airport, north of Tokyo, was inundated with cars, trucks, buses and thick mud deposited over its runways. Fires spread through a section of the city, public broadcaster NHK reported.

The tsunami roared over embankments, washing anything in its path inland before reversing directions and carrying the cars, homes and other debris out to sea. Flames shot from some of the houses, probably because of burst gas pipes.

"Our initial assessment indicates that there has already been enormous damage," Chief government spokesman Yukio Edano said. "We will make maximum relief effort based on that assessment."

He said the Defense Ministry was sending troops to the quake-hit region. A utility aircraft and several helicopters were on the way.

A large fire erupted at the Cosmo oil refinery in Ichihara city in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo and was burning out of control with 100-foot (30 meter) -high flames whipping into the sky.

In northeastern Japan's Miyagi prefecture, a fire broke out in a turbine building of a nuclear power plant.

Smoke was observed coming out of the building, which is separate from the plant's reactor, and the cause is under investigation, said Tohoku Electric Power Co. the company said.

There have been no reports of radioactive leaks or injuries, the company said. Several nuclear plants elsewhere along the coast were also partially shut down, with no reports of leakage.

Also from Miyagi prefecture, NHK showed footage of a large ship being swept away and ramming directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 2:46 p.m. quake was a magnitude 8.9, the biggest earthquake to hit Japan since officials began keeping records in the late 1800s.

A tsunami warning was extended to a number of Pacific, Southeast Asian and Latin American nations, including Japan, Russia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Chile.

In the Philippines, authorities said they expect a 3-foot (1-meter) high tsunami.

The quake struck at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, the agency said. The area is 240 miles (380 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.

In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.

The tremor bent the upper tip of the iconic Tokyo Tower, a 333-meter (1,093-foot) steel structure inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In central Tokyo, trains were stopped and passengers walked along the tracks to platforms. NHK said more than 4 million buildings were without power in Tokyo and its suburbs.

Large numbers of people waited at Tokyo's Shinjuku station, the world's busiest train station, for service to resume so they could go home.

TV announcers urged workers not to leave their offices to prevent injuries in case of more strong aftershocks.

Osamu Akiya, 46, was working in Tokyo at his office in a trading company when the quake hit.

It sent bookshelves and computers crashing to the floor, and cracks appeared in the walls.

"I've been through many earthquakes, but I've never felt anything like this," he said. "I don't know if we'll be able to get home tonight."

Footage on NHK from their Sendai office showed employees stumbling around and books and papers crashing from desks.

It also showed a glass shelter at a bus stop in Tokyo completely smashed by the quake and a weeping woman nearby being comforted by another woman.

Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude one on Wednesday.

Hiroshi Sato, a disaster management official in northern Iwate prefecture, said officials were having trouble getting an overall picture of the carnage.

"We don't even know the extent of damage. Roads were badly damaged and cut off as tsunami washed away debris, cars and many other things," he said.

Tokyo's main airport was closed. A large section of the ceiling at the 1-year-old airport at Ibaraki, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo, fell to the floor with a powerful crash.

Dozens of fires were reported in northern prefectures of Fukushima, Sendai, Iwate and Ibaraki. Collapsed homes and landslides were also reported in Miyagi.

Japan's worst previous quake was in 1923 in Kanto, an 8.3-magnitude temblor that killed 143,000 people, according to USGS. A 7.2-magnitude quake in Kobe city in 1996 killed 6,400 people.

Japan lies on the "Ring of Fire" - an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones stretching around the Pacific where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur, including the one that triggered the Dec. 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami that killed an estimated 230,000 people in 12 nations.

A magnitude-8.8 temblor that shook central Chile last February also generated a tsunami and killed 524 people.

Sun Yat-sen's granddaughter dies after car accident

Nora Sun, a granddaughter of Sun Yat-sen – the Founding Father of Republican China – has died from injuries following a car accident.

She passed away at the Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital in Taiwan around 2pm on Saturday.

Her family members were by her side.

Sun, 72, met with an accident while heading to the Taoyuan International Airport to catch a flight to Hong Kong.

A vehicle, heading in the opposite direction, hit her car which was driven by a friend.

Sun suffered serious injuries to her chest and abdomen, resulting in multiple traumas, lacerations of the liver and internal bleeding.

Sun was a Chinese American diplomat and businesswoman.

She returned to Taiwan to attend the Taipei International Flora Expo.

Three friends brutally killed

What should have been Chinese New Year preparations for families of three friends in Paya Mengkuang, near Masjid Tanah in Malacca, have now turned into funeral arrangements after they were brutally killed.

Chong Sai Keong, 17, Tai Shi Yong, 18 and Lan Lu Xuan, 20, were killed by a group of armed youth on motorcycles at about 10.30pm on Friday, about 1.5km from their homes.

It is believed that the three, who were also on motorcycles, had been provoked by the group who led them to an ambush along Jalan Kampung Solok in Pengkalan Balak.

They were killed shortly after residents in the tight-knit community had finished lighting up their town centre with lanterns for the coming festival.

A heartbroken Chong Kim Siak, 52, said he had earlier received a call that his son was involved in an accident.

"I was about to leave home when I received another call to say that he was killed in a fight. In the end, I didn’t go to the scene as I couldn’t bear to look at my son’s lifeless, bloodied body," he said, adding that Sai Keong was to have joined a wiring and air-conditioning course in a nearby community college after dropping out of school.

Tai Keng Yong, 55, said he rushed to the scene after receiving a call that his son was in an accident.

“It was then that I learnt my son was attacked by a group of youths. I rushed him to the Terendak Army Camp Hospital but it was too late,” he said, adding that Shi Yong had mobile phone shop in nearby Pengkalan Balak.

Lan Song Hing, 49, said his only son Lu Xuan, a mechanic, had earlier gone to play badminton and football with several friends.

“I never expected this to happen to him,” he said.

State Chief Police Officer SAC Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said a 16-year-old youth was detained on Saturday and has been remanded for a week.

“We are investigating the motive of the attack,” he said.

Malaysian maid wins Hong Kong lottery worth RM12 mil

The richest maid in the world is probably a Malaysian

Citing a China Press (a Malaysian Chinese paper) story, The Star (a Malaysian daily) reported that a Malaysian maid working in Hong Kong won more than HK$30 million (or RM12 million) in lottery money.

The middle-aged woman is employed at the mansion of casino tycoon Stanley Ho's fourth wife, Angela Leong. Ho is widely known as the "King of Gambling".

According to her employer's family, the lucky maid purchased a Mark Six lottery ticket on her birthday.

However, Angela Leong reportedly said she was unaware that any of her Malaysian workers had won the prize.

Resident crushed by falling neighbour at apartment

A woman died in a freak accident in Singapore when she was crushed by her neighbour who fell from the building they were both living in, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Lau Fong Kien, 55, was crushed by Ng Sock Luan. The incident happened at a block of Bishan St 13 in Singapore on Monday.

Lau was a breast cancer survivor while Ng had been suffering from depression for two months and was on medication.

Lau’s sister Fong Chu said the victim was on her way back from her medical check-up at a Chinese medical centre.

“Normally, she (Fong Kien) would go back home before 10.30am with takeaway food for our mother.

“However, due to the huge crowd at the medical centre, Fong Kien was delayed. If she had been early or late by a minute, she would not have been at that spot at that time,” she said.

Ng’s husband Ting Thiam Ho said his wife attempted suicide twice but her condition had improved after she was twice admitted to the hospital for treatments.

“She had stopped talking about committing suicide. I do not understand why this happened,” he said.

Human error blamed in fatal bus crash

IPOH: An accident involving a high-decked bus that crashed on its way down from Cameron Highlands last month is due to human error and not caused by an oil spill on the road as speculated earlier.

State Infrastructure Committee chairman Datuk Ramly Zahari said police investigations showed human error was the reason for the crash which killed 28 people.

“Claims that the accident was caused by an oil spill on the road are just assumptions,” he told reporters after visiting the accident site near here yesterday.

He said although the accident was caused by human error, the state government would improve the physical condition of the road at the accident site.

“We will be asking the state government to approve another RM200,000 to enhance the safety aspect at the road which would include widening a 100m stretch,” he said.

“A groove will also be built before the accident site to warn motorists to slow down,” Ramly said.

He added that the works would be completed in a month.

Ramly said installing multiple warning signs and solar-powered street lamps were among the measures that had been done immediately after the bus crash.

Six injured after bus skids

TEMERLOH: Six people were injured, two of them with fractured ribs, when a double-decker express bus skidded and hit a hillside at Km363 Raub-Bentong road at dawn Sunday.

Raub police chief Supt Wan Mohd Samsuddin Wan Osman said the Mahligai express bus was ferrying 39 passengers to Kuala Lumpur from Kota Baharu when the accident occurred at 5.30am.

He said the victims with fractured ribs were admitted to the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital here while four other injured passengers were treated at the Raub Hospital.

The bus driver was tested negative for drugs, he added. - Bernama

Girl and mum killed after collecting exam results

KOTA BARU: A 15-year-old girl and her mother were killed in a road accident in Kok Lanas town after they had collected the girl’s PMR examination result.

Siti Aishah Zakaria and Azizah Musa, 42, who were on a motorcycle, died on the spot in the accident at the traffic light junction of Jalan Kuala Krai-Kota Baru at about 1pm, said a spokesman of the Kota Baru district police.

The spokesman said Azizah, who was riding the machine, had stopped at the lights when she was hit by a lorry carrying sandstone.

He said the lorry also crashed into three vehicles waiting behind the motorcycle.

Aishah’s father, Zakaria Muhamad, 43, an ex-serviceman, said he learned of the accident from a friend who called him at 1.15pm.

He said his daughter’s teacher had informed him that Aishah had scored 4As, 4Bs and 1C in the examination. — Bernama

Prison officers killed in crash

KOTA KINABALU: Four Sabah prison officers were killed when a bus plunged down a steep slope and overturned several times near Kampung Moyog, some 45km from here, yesterday.

In the incident at about 10.15am, the driver of the department bus lost control of the vehicle before it went off the road and plummeted down the slope.

Twenty-one people including family members of prison officers were injured.

Seven have been listed in critical condition.

The impact of the accident along the hilly and winding Tambunan-Kota Kinabalu trunk road sheared off the roof of the bus, pinning two of the dead victims.

The injured and the bodies of the dead were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A Fire and Rescue Services Department official listed the dead as bus co-driver Muslimin Muhamad, Madinah Alahamdulilah, Selamat Idris and Sabirin Murad.

Bus driver Rizwan Samda Mudin was injured.

Among the first to be plucked out by rescuers was 14-year-old Mohd Hafidz Ramli, whose father, Ramli Basal, was among the injured.

Mohd Hafidz said that after negotiating a sharp bend on a steep downhill slope, the driver lost control of the bus.

“It seemed as if he was trying to apply the brakes but he couldn’t control the vehicle.

“Everybody was screaming, then I passed out,” he said.

The bus also narrowly missed an electricity pole before the plunge.

Muslimin’s 14-year-old son, Mohd Noraihan, who had been sitting beside his father before the accident, said he was thrown about when the bus overturned.

“All I could remember was the bus shuddering as it plunged down the slope and I was thrown about in the bus,” he said after being pulled out from the wreckage.

The 40-seater bus was one of three buses carrying prison officers and their family members back after a three-day inter-state departmental football tournament.

Birthday joy ends in death

BUTTERWORTH: The joy of celebrating a friend’s birthday ended in tragedy when a 25-year old mechanic was killed in an accident at KM5.1 on the Prai-bound lane of the Penang Bridge.

A police spokesman said Khor Chai Tong from Nibong Tebal died shortly after the car he was driving crashed into the bridge divider and caught fire at about 1am yesterday.

“A friend, who drove in a separate car from behind, stopped and pulled him out before the car caught fire.

“But he died shortly afterwards due to multiple injuries on his head,” the spokesperson said, adding that his body was sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for post-mortem.

The spokesman said initial investigations showed that the man was driving fast on the right lane and lost control of the vehicle.

On hitting the divider, the car spun a few times before coming to a halt and catching fire, he said.

Prai fire station senior officer Ismail Rahim said 14 firemen on two engines and four Rapid Intervention Motorcycle units from the station rushed to the scene after receiving a call at 1.18am.

He said the firemen took about five minutes to put the fire out.

State Police Traffic Operations chief Deputy Supt Abdul Rahim Md Din said the case was being investigated to check if there was any element of reckless driving.

17-year-olds called home to say they would be late

PETALING JAYA: One of the three friends killed in the accident on KM27.3 of the Federal Highway had just obtained his driving licence a month ago.

Choong Boon Seng said his son Jin Rong, 17, had been driving since then.

“This is his first road accident and it has claimed his life,” he said at the University Malaya Medical Centre mortuary yesterday.

“I called him at midnight and he told me that he would be back a little late as he was meeting up with his friends.”

Jin Rong’s friend Liew Yun Fen, also 17, was said to have left her Seri Kembangan home at about 11pm after informing her parents.

Her father, identified only as Liew, said Yun Fen joined her friends in Klang for a drink.

“She rang me at about 1am informing me that she would be back late,” he said.

The uncle of the third victim – Fong Mun Fai – said the 18-year-old left his house at about 11am on Monday.

He did not alert the family about where he was going.

“He only called his mother about an hour before the accident saying that he would return home late,” he said.

Taking illegal U-turn on highway a costly mistake for three friends

PETALING JAYA: Three friends who were on their way home after attending a reunion gathering with classmates died in a tragic accident.

The three, who had just sat for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, were Fong Mun Fai, 18, Liew Yun Fen , 17, and Choong Jin Rong , also 17.

Choong, who was driving a Perodua Kancil in the middle lane, apparently tried to make an illegal U-turn at Km27.3 of the Federal Highway in the 3.30am incident yesterday.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said the Kancil was rammed by a Proton Waja, which was travelling on the fast lane.

He said Choong and Liew died at the scene while Fong succumbed to injuries at 9am at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).

The Proton Waja’s driver, Sukvinderjit Singh, 27, also suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to the UMMC Intensive Care Unit.

ACP Arjunaidi said Choong was thrown out of the vehicle and died at the scene while Liew was flung out to an adjacent lane and was hit by a lorry.

Initial investigations revealed that the three friends were on their way back to Seri Kembangan, .

The case is being investigated under Section 41A of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

In an unrelated incident, a police constable suffered a broken leg after he was rammed by a car during crime prevention rounds early yesterday morning.

ACP Arjunaidi said Rustamat Awang, 28, who is attached to the Damansara police station, is currently being treated at the Sungai Buloh Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Five in family die in tragic collision with army truck

PORT DICKSON: Five members of a family on holiday here died in a tragic accident when an out-of-control army truck ploughed into their Proton Wira at KM19.5 Jalan Pantai near Pasir Panjang here.

Mohd Said Lakan, 58, his wife Rosnani Buyong, 50, their daughter Nordiana, 30, son-in-law Saipol Naaim Mat Dan, 36 and three-year-old grandson Muhammad Harith Firdaus died on the spot in the 11.15am tragedy.

It is learnt that the family from Hulu Langat in Kajang, Selangor, was travelling towards Malacca from here while the truck, from the Terendak Camp in Malacca, was heading in the opposite direction.

The Proton Wira driven by Saipol Naaim was reduced to a mangled wreck as the army truck dragged it into a ditch.

One of the victims was also decapitated.

Preliminary investigations revealed that either the driver of another car, a Proton Waja, or the army truck had entered into the lane of the other vehicle seconds before the accident.

Both vehicles then grazed into one another, resulting in the driver of the truck losing control. It then ploughed into the Wira, which was travelling behind the Waja.

The impact of the accident caused the truck to flip on its side.

Four of the five victims were trapped in the Wira while Muhammad Harith Firdaus was flung out.

The Waja then collided into a MyVi and a Kia Spectra which were travelling behind the truck.

The driver and four army personnel in the truck suffered minor injuries and received outpatient treatment at the district hospital here.

The male driver of the Waja, his wife and two young children were also rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Firemen from the Port Dickson and Teluk Kemang stations took 30 minutes to extricate the remains of the dead. The bodies were later sent to the district hospital here for post-mortem and were later claimed by relatives.

Port Dickson police chief Supt Baljeet Singh said police hoped to interview the survivors soon to establish the cause of the crash.

Friend returns from China for sad ‘reunion’

GEORGE TOWN: Sales officer Ellin Yuen, 27, flew back from China to pay her last respects to her close friend Malaysia Airlines stewardess Ng Sweet Yuin, who was killed in a road accident.

She remembered how Ng had match-made her with her friend Kelven Lee, 28, during Chap Goh Meh in 2000.

Lee is now Yuen’s husband.

“It has been more than seven years since Ng and I last met after our graduation from Penang TAR College.

“I had hoped to see her at my wedding dinner in November last year, but she could not make it.

“I will miss her. We were so close in school that we talked about almost everything,” said Yuen.

She was among some 100 family members, friends and relatives who sent Ng on her last journey to the Batu Gantong crematorium yesterday.

On Thursday, Ng, also 27, died after her Perodua MyVi was involved in a head-on collision with the vehicle driven by a youth on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway at 3.15am.

Investigations into the road accident showed the car driven by the youth, 22, was travelling against traffic.

There was a heavy downpour before the funeral procession.

But as soon as the hearse bearing the cortege of Ng left the Batu Gantong funeral parlour, the rain stopped and the clouds disappeared to reveal a clear sky.

Some sobbed uncontrollably when the song Dan Yuan Ren Chang Jiu (“Wishing for Eternal Bliss”) was played by the band.

Ng’s mother Thniah Poh Choo, 52, said her daughter’s airline uniform was placed next to her body in the casket.

Ng’s father Choon Sum, 53, said they had sought legal advice over the accident.

“Once the funeral is over, we may consider taking legal action against the other driver,” he said.

Penang traffic police enforcement/operations chief Asst Supt Ahmad Ezzely Razali said the results of the blood samples taken from the two drivers are expected to be out by Wednesday.

“We are waiting to record a statement from the youth.

“He is still receiving treatment at the Penang Hospital for injuries to his mouth and cheeks and is unable to talk,” he said.

Woman run over while trying to save son

SEREMBAN: A woman managed to save her four-year-old son from being knocked down by a speeding Proton Gen 2 – but was herself killed when she failed to get out of the vehicle’s way.

Parvathy Chinnakano, 36, had just crossed the road with her son after throwing rubbish when she saw two Proton Gen 2 cars heading their way in Pajam near here.

She quickly pushed her son to safety but was knocked down by one of the speeding cars. Both drivers sped off.

It in understood that Parvathy lived in a house behind a row of shophouses along the main road.

An eyewitness, Sharizat Mohd Saimi 19, who was in a van parked by the roadside, said he saw her walking along the emergency lane seconds before the accident happened.

“She had just crossed the road when she was hit,” he said. “The two cars looked to be racing with each another,” he said.

The impact caused the victim to be flung against the van, said Sharizat, who was waiting for a friend who had gone to buy groceries at a nearby store.

His friend Imran Shafie, 21, said he rushed out of the store when he heard a thud.

State traffic police chief Asst Supt Halil Hamzah said his men had been alerted to look out for the two vehicles.

It was all due to a creaky, leaky bus, say families

ALOR STAR: The families of the seven victims killed in the bus crash near Genting believe their loved ones would still be alive if not for an unscrupulous bus operator who had provided them with a vehicle that was in poor condition.

Family members, when met in Kampung Baru, Mukim Siong near Baling, said the bus operator had promised a bus that was in good condition.

Instead, the bus was in bad shape, with the air-conditioning leaking and an engine that sounded weird, according to a survivor, Mohammad Hafifi Yahya, 19.

Mustaffa Ibrahim, 60, the father of 17-year-old Mohd Fahmi who died in the accident, said the family accepted it as fate, but was disappointed that the operator had provided a substandard bus.

Mustaffa, an imam at a mosque in Kedah, said all seven who died were related to each other.

Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said an investigation would be carried out and the report would be submitted to the Cabinet before the end of November.

Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Resarch director-general Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said a reconstruction analysis of the accident was under way.

Co-ordinator’s last words – I’m okay, go help the others

KUALA LUMPUR: “I’m okay, go help the others.” These were the last words of Ustaz Mohd Zaidi Mohd Sufian when a few youths tried to help him after the bus accident at Genting Sempah on Friday.

He died in the 7.50pm accident.

Mohd Zaidi, 28, a religious teacher and co-ordinator of the trip, died on the way to the Selayang Hospital.

One of the survivors, Mohammad Hafifi Yahya, 19, said he was sitting behind Mohd Zaidi. “We were thrown out of the bus when it started rolling.

“I saw him near me and asked if he needed help, but he told me to help the others instead,” he said at the hospital yesterday.

“I could not see how badly he was injured as it was too dark,” said Mohammad Hafifi, who suffered a broken leg.

Student Mohd Akram Abd Mustafa, 19, survived the crash only to see the lifeless body of his younger brother, 17-year-old Mohd Fahmi Abd Mustafa.

“When the bus went out of control, I was sitting in the middle of the bus and he was towards the back.

“Both of us were flung out and I landed on a patch of grass by the side of the road,” he said.

Mohd Akram said his first instinct was to look for his brother.

“I frantically searched for him. Then I saw a figure in a drain and when I got closer, I realised it was Fahmi,” he said.

Nor Haizam Hasan, 37, the mother of Mohd Ajril Azizi Azhari, said when she first heard about the accident, she thought her son was playing a prank.

“He called me and said: ‘Mum, I am pinned under the bus,’” she said.

“I told him to stop joking but before he could reply, the line went dead.”

A neighbour then alerted her about the accident 15 minutes later.

Mohd Ajril survived but suffered injuries and has been warded at the Selayang Hospital.

Umno Youth executive member Datuk Sohaimi Shahadan, who visited the crash victims at the hospital yesterday, said monetary aid and wheelchairs would be provided to the victims and their families.
