Girl, 9, gets six-organ transplant

A nine-year-old girl is making what doctors described as a remarkable recovery on Sunday, days after surgeons transplanted six of her organs in a groundbreaking medical procedure.

The surgery performed last Tuesday on young Alannah Shevenell, sought to remove an aggressive cancerous growth festering since 2008, and that had attacked her stomach, liver, pancreas, esophagus, small intestine and spleen.

The surgery was performed in Boston, Massachusetts at Children's Hospital, one of this nation's most highly regarded medical facilities.

"For just under 100 days Alannah and her grandmother have been staying at Children's while she received treatment for a rare and aggressive cancer that was compromising several of her internal organs," the hospital said in a statement.

Designer has surgeries to look like anime girl

A fashion designer in Singapore went under the knife 10 times, just to look like an anime girl with sparkling big eyes and a heart-shaped face.

The 29-year-old, known only as Jacqueline, spent S$136,000 (RM326,400) for plastic surgery and correction jobs after she failed to lose weight.

She had dieted and exercised for months to shed excess weight after putting on 6kg in 18 months about two years ago.

When there was no improvement, she decided not just to lose weight but also to revamp her entire look.

Jacqueline, who shared her surgical ex­perience in her blog, received hundreds of e-mails daily from netizens who sought her advice.

"I am not out for fame. I just want to help other women become pretty or even prettier than me," she said.

A 36-year-old sperm donor admits to fathering 14 children despite never having had sex.

Trent Arsenault, an IT geek from San Francisco found a unique way to do charity with his bodily fluid after launching a website in 2006 offering free sperm donations to childless couples.

Discussing his public mission on Anderson Cooper chatshow, Arsenault explained: "I coined this term 'donor sexual' and I'll explain it means 100% of my sexual energy is for producing sperm for childless couples to have babies. So I don't have other activity outside of that.

"I will probably be the 40-year-old virgin. Except I'll have 15 plus kids."

On the show, he also met one of his biological children - a 23-month-old daughter named Analise, for the first time.

"I'm trying to not get too emotional," he said. "I'm just extremely happy that she's healthy and in a loving home. I hope she has the gene of compassion and that her parents nurture that."

According to US media, Arsenault was threatened with a one-year jail sentence and a fine of US$100,000 (RM300,000) last December after the FDA accused him of failing to prevent the spread of disease and found him to be unlawfully manufacturing human cells.

PLUS offers 10% toll discount for CNY

KUALA LUMPUR: Plus Expressways Berhad (PLUS) is offering toll rebate of 10% for users of PlusMiles and Touch n' Go cards in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

PLUS managing director Datuk Noorizah Abd Hamid, in a statement here Wednesday, said the users would enjoy the rebate on Thursday, Jan 23 and Friday Jan 27.

However, the offer is not applicable if payment is debited at the border toll plazas of Bukit Kayu Hitam, Penang Bridge, Tanjung Kupang and Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, she said.

She said the rebate can be claimed at the company's customer service centres when topping up the electronic cards between March 1 and May 31.

Noorizah said the toll rebate was another strategy by PLUS to encourage users to switch to the electronic payment system, which is easier and faster.

Besides that, she said, the rebate can clear the traffic and encourage users to travel outside the peak hours.

Noorizah said PLUS expected the traffic volume to increase 30% to 1.4 million cars every day during the upcoming Chinese New Year festive period. Chinese New Year falls on Monday. - Bernama

'Tsunami miracle baby’ not afraid of the sea which almost took her life

GEORGE TOWN: “Tsunami miracle baby” S. Thulasi goes out swimming in the sea a few times a week – since her father taught her swimming early this year.

The bubbly and active seven-year-old shows no signs of fearing the sea, which almost claimed her life on the day the tsunami hit on Dec 26, 2004.

Thulasi was only 22 days old when she was found sound asleep on a floating mattress after giant waves hit her father’s seaside food outlet on Miami Beach in Tanjung Bungah, here.

“I go out to the sea to swim with my cousin a few times a week after my father taught me how to swim early this year,” Thulasi said at a thanksgiving and prayer ceremony organised by her father A. Suppiah at the beach yesterday.

Besides being thankful for his daughter’s life, Suppiah and his family have also been holding the annual prayer, known as the atma shanti pooja, to keep the departed souls claimed by the disaster in peace.

“We will never forget the tragedy but we are moving on with our lives and we are also proud of Thulasi as she is doing well in school,” he said after the prayer.

Thulasi’s sister Kanchana, 19, said foreign tourists who dropped by the family’s food outlet would ask her about the “miracle mattress baby”.

“I set up a Facebook fan page, ‘The tsunami miracle baby Thulasi’, with photos of my sister so that people can follow her progress in life,” she said.

In Kota Kuala Muda, near Sungai Petani, fisherman Md Hafidzi Ismail, 44, who lost two of his daughters – Nur Hafizatul Fatihah, five, and Nur Hafizatul Fasehah, 11 months – in the tragedy, said he has overcome his sorrow.

“The birth of my daughter Nur Hafizatul Fitrah on Oct 5, 2005 and my son Mohd Hafiz Fikri on May 24 last year have reduced the pain of losing my two girls.

“I want to put the tragedy behind me and concentrate on my family to give them the best I can,” he said at his house in Kampung Tradisi Keda.

Another fisherman, Adnan Bakar, 58, recalled how he held on to a guava tree that was eventually uprooted after being swept away by strong waves.

“I then grabbed a coconut tree and that’s when I heard a woman and two young children screaming for help from a house nearby,” he said, adding that he later managed to help them.

Floods force more than 2,000 folk in Kuching, Samarahan and Sibu out of their homes

KUCHING: Continuous heavy rain coupled with king tides between 6m and 6.2m high have forced more than 2,000 people out of their homes here, in Samarahan and Sibu.

The bad weather, which started since Saturday and continued till yesterday, have inundated some low-lying areas with 1m of floodwater.

According to the State Ops Room, some villagers from Sadong Jaya area had to move out of their homes around 7pm on Christmas due to rising floodwater.

As of yesterday afternoon, officials said about 1,500 people involving 374 families from six villages in Sadong Jaya and Asajaya, Samarahan division, had been evacuated to five relief centres.

As at 6pm, Kota Samarahan police chief ASP Abdul Rahman Ahmad said 143 families involving 576 people had been placed at the Asajaya Sports Complex, 195 families (729 people) at SK Kelali, 12 families (30 people) at SK Terasi and 24 families (163 people) at Surau Rengawan.

The relief centre at Dewan Kampung Pelanduk had also been activated, he added.

In Sibu, the State Ops Room said more than 500 people from 121 families from four longhouses near Sungai Arip, Ulu Balingian were evacuated around 3am yesterday after it rained nonstop for two days.

Several low-lying areas in Kuching such as Samariang Batu, Kampung Beradik and Kampung Tengah Sungai Batu Kawah were also flooded, forcing more than 200 people out of their homes.

A State Ops Room official said the Malaysia Meteorological Department had issued an Orange stage warning, saying heavy rain would last until this evening and might cause floods in low-lying areas, particularly here and in Bau.

The department had also issued a Yellow stage or heavy rain advisory, saying that Lundu, Samarahan, Asajaya, Serian, Simunjan, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Betong, Saratok, Sarikei, Bintangor, Pakan, Julau, Mukah, Dalat, Matu and Daro would still be experiencing intermittent rain today.

Teen electrocuted in freak accident in Bali

Talk about a holiday gone wrong...

Jake Flannery, an Australian teen holidaying in Bali, died instantly after touching a a live wire and a neon sign.

Friends who were travelling with Jake, tried to revive him but were unsuccessful.

Flannery's saddened friends plan to cut short their Bali break and head straight back to Australia.

"We’re holding up as best we can," said one.

"He was just a fantastic guy. He was really good academically, in creative arts and at sport as well _ he was a very good hockey player."

Flannery's mother said, "I've been so stressed out about him going out there. But I really wasn't stressed about this (happening). This wasn't what I was worried about. You don't think about something as simple as leaning on a pole. You can't imagine it happening in Australia like that.

Grandma slashes child in a fit

KUALA LUMPUR: An 80-year-old woman savagely attacked her three-year-old grandchild with a meat cleaver in a fit of anger before falling to her death from a nearby apartment block.

Police are investigating the motive behind the 11.15am attack at the family’s terrace house in Bandar Baru Ampang yesterday.

The day had started like any other Sunday for a 40-year-old mother of two who was getting ready to send her eldest son, 10, for tuition.

Her husband was asleep.

As she was leaving, she turned to tell her mother-in-law that there was no need to cook as she would be buying food.

The older woman suddenly grabbed the cleaver and started attacking the toddler.

The child’s mother screamed when she saw blood gushing out of her daughter’s head.

According to her police report, upon hearing her screams, her mother-in-law ran out of the house.

Her body was later found on the ground of an apartment building near the family’s home.

Police believe she had jumped to her death. The family rushed the injured girl to Hospital Ampang.

She was then transferred to Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Amiruddin Jamaluddin said the girl’s condition had stabilised.

“We are still trying to figure out the reason behind this attack,” he said yesterday.

Police have opened two investigation papers for this case – under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing injuries with a weapon and sudden death.

Girl brings toddler to school

Unrelenting media attention has brought hope and also a lot of disturbance to a 10-year-old Chinese girl struggling through a difficult life.

Long Zhanghuan won widespread sympathy after a photo went online showing her carrying her two-year-old cousin to school.

Long and her five-year-old brother - from Haoyou village in Central China's Hunan province - have been living with their grandparents since their parents divorced five years ago.

Her father has custody but has not been home for three years.

The grandparents are raising eight of their grandchildren, all left behind by parents seeking jobs in other places.

Long's grandfather Long Wanting, 59, is suffering from a long-term illness and her 54-year-old grandmother's workload is too demanding.

Throughout the week, reporters from newspapers, magazines and TV from across the country have been flocking to her school, said Wu Yansheng - principal of Shanjiang Primary School.

"Initially I wanted more people to know about students in similar difficulties, but it quickly got too aggressive for the girl and I had to cancel further visits.

"She is too young and inexperienced to deal with such enormous media exposure. She broke down in tears after repeated interviews," he said.

Long's hardship as a left-behind child is very common in Fenghuang county, where 52.4% of the 46,207 primary and secondary school students are facing the same fate.

The children often take on the role of an adult at home, doing housework and taking care of smaller siblings, whom they sometimes bring to school to ease the burden on adults.

Although the media exposure has disrupted Long's normal life, it brought her unexpected help from philanthropists.

Last week, a charity group arrived and donated 30 pairs of shoes to kids in disadvantaged households, including Long.

According to the group, a philanthropist offered to donate 2,000 yuan (RM982) a month for five years to Long’s family so they could hire a helper and ease the children's burden.

Wanting was grateful for the offer and thanked the media for exposing their plight. - China Daily

Hospital throws away newborn by mistake

A hospital in South China's Guangdong province hs mistakenly diagnosed a premature baby as stillborn and threw him away.

The issue has stoked public anger and stirred a new round of debate regarding the country's hospital management system.

Liu Dongmei, 22, gave birth to a baby boy in the 32nd week of her pregnancy with the help of two nurses at Nanhai Red Cross Hospital in Foshan Oct 26.

The baby was believed to be not breathing or crying and the skin had turned purple.

The nurses assumed he was dead, wrapped him in a plastic bag and discarded him in a restroom but Liu's family rushed to the hospital 30 minutes later to find that the baby was still alive.

Huang Lichuan, director of the hospital’s department of obstetrics and gynecology, confessed that the nurses had mistakenly diagnosed the stillbirth due to a shortage of experience.

Wang Haizhang, Liu's husband, said they called the doctor on duty many times that night but no one came to help them.

Hospital authorities explained that the doctor on duty was treating a patient who was suffering from a massive haemorrhage at the time.

Local health authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The obstetrical director, doctor on duty at the time of the incident and the nurses have been suspended from duty.

Those who were responsible for the accident failed to follow proper procedure during the birth that a doctor must be present, said Pan Yongtong - standing deputy director of the health department of the Nanhai district.

The fact that the nurses did not report the supposed stillbirth to the doctor on duty before disposing of the baby is also part of the problem, Pan said. - Xinhua

Man fattens wife with steroids

A man wanted his wife to stay at home and look after the children.

Dalwara Singh , who lives in the United Kingdom, secretly put steroids into her food and drink so that she would get fat, reports the Press Trust Of India.

This caused the man's wife to sprout hair on her face and back.

The steroids also made her skin itchy and spotty.

When the wife said she needed a doctor, Singh told her it was nothing to worry about.

He was found out after several weeks, when their teenage daughter heard him grinding a pestle and mortar in the bedroom.

Steroids were then discovered in a locked cupboard .

At the Leicester Crown Court , Singh admitted administering a poison or noxious substance with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy.

Singh was given a 12-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to attend a domestic abuse programme.

He was also made the subject of a restraining order, banning contact with his estranged wife other than through solicitors or social services.

Iman Kerigo, Miss Norway And A Native Of Kenya, Visits The United States

Iman Kerigo, the first woman of African descent to be crowned Miss Norway, arrives in the US this week as part of her goodwill tour. Miss Kerigo, a refugee from Kenya who fled with her family to safety in the United Kingdom, continues her mission to raise awareness on poverty, war and domestic abuse. She will be visiting Los Angeles, Las Vegas and surrounding areas as part of her twelve day visit.

As a child born into a life of extreme hardship forged by her family’s struggle in war torn Kenya, she and her mother struggled to survive day-to-day while living under the rule of an abusive father. Iman’s mother’s greatest dream was to simply see her children live. She never dreamed her second child could achieve something so amazing.

“My mother was just happy that we were alive but she didn’t want us to live a meager existence,” Miss Kerigo said. “Being crowned Miss Norway gave me the opportunity to make sure that her dream came true.”

After waiting for some time to gain citizenship in a new country, Iman, her mother and siblings were finally accepted under refugee status to the Scandanavian country of Norway. Growing up thousands of miles away from everything she had ever known, Iman worked hard to adjust to her new adopted home, even learning to speak Norweigan and English, rather than her native Swahili.

Through hard work and dedication, she overcame tremendous odds to eventually become the first woman of African descent to ever be crowned Miss Norway. She credits much of her success in the Miss Norway Pageant to her coach, nutrition expert David Sandoval. David, author of The Green Foods Bible, had Iman follow his ‘Superfoods For Supermodels’ program, an eating program designed especially for those in the public eye.

David says, “I created this program in response to the epidemic of bulimia, anorexia and other eating disorders prevalent in the modeling and entertainment business.” But David is keen to explain that ‘Superfoods For Supermodels’ is not a diet. He adds, “Instead it features realistic guidelines for creating exceptionally healthy, lean, beautiful bodies through pure, organic, green food nutrition and core fitness.” David’s program also helps to build confidence and strength while focusing on taking personal responsibility for one’s own destiny.

Iman adds,”Part of my mission is to let young girls know that even if it seems all the odds are against you, you can still achieve great things.”

Penang airport to get multi-storey car park, hotel

GEORGE TOWN: A multi-storey car park and hotel block will soon be built within the Penang International Airport, said state Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng.

“The car park, which will have 1,218 lots, and the hotel will be built via open tender.

“Both structures will not exceed 30m as per the Civil Aviation Department's (DCA) Obstruction Clearance Limitations,” he told reporters after inspecting the progress of existing work at the airport in Bayan Lepas here Sunday.

The RM61mil wedding of Coco Lee

Coco Lee married Canadian businessman Bruce Rockowitz on Thursday.

The couple were rumoured to have spent US$20mil (RM61.27mil) on the wedding in Hong Kong.

Half of the money, around US$10mil (RM30.64mil), was spent on six-star hotel accommodations and air tickets for 300 friends and relatives from all around the world.

Around US$3mil (RM9.2mil) was spent on private jets to fly international superstars, including Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez, to the Special Administrative Region.

The couple's wedding rings are worth nearly US$3mil, reported mayday.com.

Other expenditures include payments to a PR company preparing the wedding, Coco's wedding dresses and jewellery.

The couple, however, refused to comment on the rumours nor reveal the amount spent on the wedding.

Their two-day wedding celebrations started on Thursday evening when the couple held a Jewish ceremony at a hotel, as Rockowitz is a Jewish descent.

A banquet was held after that and Coco sang a song she wrote for the billionaire husband.

At an interview earlier, the singer said she was quite nervous, as it would be the first time she performed the song I Just Wanna Marry U.

"I wrote it pretty fast, 10-over hours, because it is about the story of me and Bruce," she said.

Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys and Ne-Yo were also invited to perform at the ceremony.

The couple held another banquet at Shaw Studios in Tseung Kwan O on Friday.

They will fly to Dimakya Island of Philippines for their Honeymoon. This island is where Coco arranged a surprise birthday party for Rockowitz three years ago.

Rockowitz, 53, was voted one of the Top 50 CEOs worldwide by a US magazine.

He went to Hong Kong alone when he was 19, becoming a tennis coach and later ventured into business.

He is now the CEO of Li & Fung Group, and has other businesses.

Rockowitz has two daughters from his previous marriage.

5yr-old wins photography award


A five-year-old girl won the second prize at a photography contest in the United States.

The competition was organised by The Friends of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.

Jessica Lee followed her father, William to a national park in March, as he wanted to take some photographs for the competition.

While waiting for her father to take his shots, the girl played with her camera and snapped some shots too.

Back home, William found some nice shots from his daughter in the camera and decided to send them in for her.

He was just trying his luck, not expecting the little girl to actually get a prize.

Groom-to-be found dead

JOHOR BARU: A 32-year-old businessman who was supposed to be married next month was found dead in a pool of blood in his bathroom in Taman Pelangi Indah here.

The body of Chua Yong Chuan was discovered at about 8.30am yesterday by his mother who had gone to check whether he was awake.

His throat and wrist were slit.

Chua's future father-in-law, who only wanted to be known as Choo, said that they were supposed to meet at 9am yesterday to go over the wedding plans.

“He was supposed to marry my youngest daughter next month and both families had arranged to meet,” he told reporters here.

Choo said he last saw Chua on Tuesday and noticed that he looked unusually tired.

“He was a quiet man and respectful.

“He would always greet us whenever he came to our house to pick up my daughter,” he said.

Chua's fiancee and family were too distraught to speak to reporters when met at the Sultan Ismail Hospital mortuary here.

Meanwhile, Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaakob said that the case had been classified as sudden death and ruled out foul play.

He said the deceased had slit his wrist and throat with a kitchen knife.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem.
