Abducted baby found - after 23yrs

It was an abduction that made headlines and stunned the authorities: A three-week-old infant, taken to a hospital in New York, US, in August 1987 for treatment of a fever, was snatched by a woman dressed in nurse's clothes and never heard from again.

Carlina White was only 19-days old when she was abducted

For two decades, investigators were stumped as the case cold but the parents of the abducted girl refused to give up hope, believing that someday their daughter might return.

Their prayers were answered.

Carlina White, now 23, and a mother of a six-year old girl, was reunited on Friday with her biological parents, Joy White and Carl Tyson, bringing an end to one of the most baffling cases in the New York police files.

The reunion brought elation to a mother and father racked by prolonged pain and a new family for a woman who had long held suspicions about her past.

On Friday, Carlina White and her biological family met for the first time since her abduction, at the Bronx home of Sheena White, her 18-year-old half-sister.

The case began on August 4, 1987, when Carlina, then only 19 days old, was taken to a hospital with a fever. Her mother was then only 16 while her father, Carl, was 22.

Two hours after being admitted, Carlina disappeared from a paediatrics ward.

Detectives quickly narrowed in on a mysterious woman who had consoled Carlina's mother and had been seen in the hospital in a nurse's uniform.

Carlina White...lost and found - 23 years later

Carlina was taken to Connecticut and then to Georgia. There, she was raised as Nejdra Nance, by a woman who treated her badly and also kept guns by her bed.

Carlina's suspicions began to grow around her 16th birthday, partly "because the family and her didn't resemble each other," Sheena White said.

She began combing the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children website, eventually coming across a photo of a baby that she thought looked like herself.

She then called her biological mother, Joy White who was overjoyed to hear from her.

Carlina White urged police to test her DNA against that of Joy and her father Carl, and investigators obliged.

"Her natural instincts were confirmed with DNA swabs," NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.

Meanwhile, police have issued an arrest warrant for Ann Pettway, the woman who raised Carlina as her own and disappeared when she tracked down her real family.

The paroled woman has been missing, along with her 13-year-old son Trevon Teele, when news of Carlina's reunion with her family was reported.

"We’ve issued a warrant for her arrest for abscounding supervision," North Carolina's Department of Corrections spokeswoman Pamela Walker said.

What an astonishing story. I want to know more about the type of person who could go through with such a deplorable act, assuming her husband went along with it. Obviously the child must have grown up in a twisted environment, and I would be curious to see the emotions that must be at play.
