JOHOR BARU: The flood situation in Johor has improved, with the number of evacuees in relief centres dropping from 23,366 to 21,965 Tuesday afternoon.

According to the state government portal www.johordt.gov.my, the evacuees were placed at 80 relief centres in four affected districts.

Batu Pahat still recorded the highest numbers of evacuees with 8,181, followed by Muar with 7, 471, Ledang with 5,639 evacuees and Segamat with 674.

So far, 273 relief centres in Johor Baru, Kluang, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, and Mersing have closed as floodwaters continued to recede.

The floods have claimed five lives in the state so far. Four people died in Segamat and one in Kulaijaya.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported earlier Tuesday that in Malacca, the number of evacuees had dropped to 189.

A spokesman of the state flood operations room said they were being accommodated at two relief centres, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Parit Penghulu and Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Mendapat.
