Scotty McCreery is the new American Idol.
The smiley lad from North Carolina, the U.S., beat Lauren Alaina to emerge as the winner of the tenth season of American Idol.
At 17 years old, he is the youngest male winner and the second youngest winner of all time. (The youngest is Jordin Sparks, who was crowned the winner of the sixth season at 17 years old in 2007.)
The teenager is also the fourth guy to land the title. When he was announced as the winner, he received a hug from runner-up Alaina, 16.
Overwhelmed by his win, McCreery said: "It's been a year since Lauren and I tried out. We've been together since day one and we're going to stay together. Never in my wildest dreams...I've got to thank the Lord first, he got me here."
Heading towards the audiences to greet his family, the newly crowned winner crooned his first single I Love You This Big, as fellow finalists and the judges – Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler – congratulated him.
Earlier on, McCreery showcased his vocal prowess and held his own against country music star Tim McGraw on the latter’s Live Like You Were Dying.
