Dead woman in suitcase: Man charged

A man from New York's East Harlem was arrested on Monday and charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase left on East 114th Street in Manhattan, the police said.

On Dec. 22, a pedestrian found a large black suitcase on the sidewalk just outside a residential building at 435 East 114th Street, according to the police.

When the pedestrian opened the bag, he found a woman’s body and called 911, the police said; the woman was dead when the police arrived.

The police identified the victim as Betty Williams, 28, of the Bronx. After an autopsy, the medical examiner’s office said Williams had been strangled.

The police released two surveillance videos during their investigation. One video showed a large man rolling a suitcase down the street.

Another video showed the same man paying for items at a convenience store.

After receiving a tip, the police narrowed their focus to Hassan Malik, 55.

Police said they found him in Tarrytown, NY, brought him back to the 23rd Precinct in Harlem and charged him with second-degree murder.

He was being held without bail on Tuesday.
