Nonya fever sweeps China

Peranakan fever has gripped China, with fast-food chain KFC being the latest to ride the wave by launching 'Nonya chicken wings' earlier this month.

The curry-flavoured dish, advertised along with a photo of a sarong kebaya-clad woman, comes at the end of a year when Straits Chinese culture has enthralled mainlanders.

Since the Singapore drama serial The Little Nonya was shown from January in various Chinese provinces to strong reviews, interest about Peranakans has been piqued.

'Nonya (or better known as Nyonya here) is now a hip word in China,' said Shanghai-based Jacquie Tan, chief executive officer of Singapore catering company Kriston Food & Beverage Group.

Online bulletin boards buzz with discussion of the KFC product, although most posts have criticised the chicken's curry and coconut flavours as odd.

Curious Chinese netizens have posted numerous queries on Baidu asking for facts and history of the Straits Chinese.
