Why sometimes breast pain occurs in men too? Is it dangerous?

What Are the Causes of Breast Pain in a Man?
By David Harris , eHow Contributing Writer

Though most people associate breast pain with women, men can also experience pain in the nipple or breast.

Gynecomastia

1. One common cause of breast pain in men is called gynecomastia, which is a harmless swelling in the breast. Puberty, hormone therapy and some medications can cause the condition, which usually resolves on its own.

Runner's Nipple

2. Another condition is called runner's nipple which appears as a red, cracked or sore nipple. Runner's nipple is irritation caused by the clothes rubbing against the skin. Wearing loose clothes, applying Vaseline or putting bandages over nipples can help.

Cysts

3. If you notice a lump, that may or may not be painful, see your doctor. It is mostly likely a benign cyst.

Breast Cancer

4. Breast cancer, however rare, can occur in men. Symptoms include a painless lump under the nipple, skin changes and discharge from the nipple.

Considerations

5. A painless lump does not always signify cancer. Fibroadenomas are benign tumors that can occur in men, as well as women.
